Loved it

Picked it up thinking this will be pretty good and was surprised loved it! The character development is great and bit darker than the average light novel

Majima Takahiro is a high school student, one of thousand who suddenly end up in a wilderness filled with monsters. Some students have "cheat"-powers, others have nothing. At first things go reasonably well, but when a large group of the people with Cheats set off to find civilization, those staying behind go high on their power and rebel against everybody. Takahiro is beaten up by his class mates, escapes and nearly dies only to learn he does have a Cheat: he can tame (female) monsters. Now he has to gather more servants to survive while staying away from the untrustworthy humans.

The premise of the story is fairly simple, but it does give much thought on how the monsters change/feel about become servants including an extensive section written from the point of view of one of the monsters in which she questions her own motives. It creates a focus on character development and less on action. I found it interesting.

As for the negatives. It is very much a harem story, which I don't mind, but the in story explanation felt rather contrived and as a result only makes it more obvious to me. I am not a big fan of humans going savage just because their is no oversight, but at least the protagonist does not become vengeful/emotionless because of it, so it does not negatively impact my enjoyment of the story. The world building is a bit shallow now, but considering the amount of attention given to how the taming ability works and how monsters are formed (even if it is a fairly standard explanation), I am optimistic that changes in the future. I would love to have a bit more meaningful interaction with his fellow refugees and sapient life beyond his servants and a traumatized girl.

All in all, it was a surprisingly enjoyable read. I am going to continue with the series.

Utter garbage. It's one of those edgy-wants-to-be-taken-seriously kind of series but in the end just wants to fuck monster girls. The synopsis is amazing, a LOT of people get transported to another world. IF done right like with The Wandering Inn, it would be great. It wasn't done right tho, the story immediately devolves to "Oh, we are powerful, we will rape and kill people, hurdur." and the MC becomes "Humans are bad. . . except for women."

If you want to indulge in harem, or monster harem, just please read Herald of Shalia. That one is competently written and is absolutely unapologetic in what it is. This one, first chapter, FIRST CHAPTER, I was on the fence at first but the moment that he encountered a MIMIC slime, I knew it was just about fucking monster girls.

Novels that want to be taken seriously but falls flat in all the edgy crap grade school philosophy that they use to justify all the angst just falls harder. This is a novel embarrassed in wanting to fuck monster girls and wants to hide it, coming across as juvenile at best. And who the hell wants to listen to angsty teens who think they know everything but in the end is actually just complaining because no one is giving them attention?

Screw this book, waste of time.

MC and his classmates find themselves in another world and discover that some of them have powers. Some of those with powers decide to use them with less than kindly intentions and the MC ends up with trauma that means he decides he can only trust the monsters he has under his own power’s control. I could sort of recommend this as an exploration of that trauma (his inability to trust and how he navigates his control or how his monsters navigate their new life circumstances) or the type of “realistic” the power imbalances of the new world imply, but this includes a harem collection so I don’t expect much from future volumes. Also, the “sexy-times” so far were very lackluster so I don’t recommend this on the strength of its monsterf*cking aspect if that interests you.

Very good book. The cover is of a character that could be a he or she. It is a he. He is the monster tamer and it is a book about how he discovers his power of such ending with the book explaining through another character how it works. The 1 monster that can have a changed is a girl the other 2 are genderless. A wooden thing and a slime that can change into anything.
Mostly about his jounry with the slime thing when it is transformed into the human girl he liked the most from the human colony that was his class before they all got transported to a new world.

So, an edgy main character decides he hates all of humanity for what seems to be relatively tame reasons and proceeds to discover his ability to make certain monsters his servants so he hangs out with monsters now. His servants, in typical fashion, are all female and in love with him. One of them even transforms into a cute high school girl. Woo.

Despite the entire first half of this book provoking a prolonged groan from myself, it perks up a bit later on and I quite enjoyed the last act; even if it didn't turn out any differently than expected, it had some great stuff along the way. I can't decide if I want volume 2, but on the whole this didn't turn out too badly.

The story got dark quick, but things then got better. Started to get dark again, but didn't. The later half of the story had a lot of exposition, think the Architect from the Matrix movies, but I think it was necessary. The author did a great job on the protagonist's PTSD. I don't trust any of the humans in the story, even the ones the protagonist trusts.

Overall I enjoyed the story more than I thought I would, especially given the title, Monster Tamer. Looking forward to the next volume.

Started off really interesting, but also very dark. Was giving me strongly a Japanese version of "Lord of the Flies". Interesting world that definitely makes you want to know more about the monsters, but the main character does a lot of repetitive inner monologues (one of my biggest pet peeves in books) the girls are of all course all super devoted to him which was a bit cringy. Not sure if I'm going to keep going on this series.

Good start

Was back and forth about getting this, but I am glad I tried it. Overall was a good book, there was a lot more emotional talk than I thought there was going to be but not in a bad way. Already bought the next book.

Pretty good first volume

I enjoyed this book. It was a little bit "by the numbers" but the ending shows a lot of promise.

The story started off a little stiff and there was some awkwardness to the telling, but after a little while it started to flow better and became a great story. I look forward to Volume 2

The pacing and explanations are weird but I truly do enjoy the book and the skip out on some of the cliches. Also, be ready for some darkish plot points reminiscent of Goblin Slayer.

Interesting so far

Has many elected loosely tied together, but is then turned onto a story with reading. Looking forward to the next book.

The MC's taming ability is totally plot armor and the number of plot holes and subpar writing made me to drop it

Short story is well written. I would personally have ommited all of Lily's POV (point of view). If the tamed monsters can sense each other and their master's life, then the only real problem is the main character's lack of "cojones" (character). If the main character is in fact a monster tamer, all he had to do is to order the Arachnid not to hurt him or the rest of his party (tamed monsters).
I know most short novels have a weak-willed main character but this guy deserves a prize for all around WIMP. Complains about everything and barely does anything positive or helpful. His cheat skill is even a passive skill that needs no spell to be cast or effort on his part (at least to this point).
The illustrations are rather dark and nor well made. I think they could improve by a whole lot.

Poor character development.

Arifureta meets Lord of the flies. The problem with the story is that our character is not developed at all, we don’t see why his hate for humanity is so great, and at the same time there are so many inconsistencies in his behavior, like hating all humans, but at the same time helping some. All other human characters are murderers, rapist or plainly psychos and we never see why. We understand that he was beaten and almost killed by some classmates, but that doesn’t explain his rooted hate towards all humans.
