Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.

Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.

Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.

Career and major works:

Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.

In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.

During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.

Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series

Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.

During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

Longrunning romantic comedies tend to suffer when they bring about a resolution to the romance the entire series was built on.

Even worse, authors time and time again feel that this must be accompanied with a very epic and very uncomedic conclusion.

That being said, this is part 1 of 2. Perhaps it turns out all right in the end.

The last two volumes both cover one final arc in the Ranma ½ story… and it’s a pretty good one (and, imo, a good way to finish off the series). The only downside is that some of the characters I really like aren’t in it, or only show up for one bit at the end (Ukyo, Konatsu, Akari) and the Tendos – other than Akane – are barely in it at all. I also twitch a bit with this one because it looks like they had a different translator, who turned all of Ryoga’s Akane-sans into Miss Akane – which is all right, but it doesn’t go with the rest of the manga thus far and makes Ryoga sound far more formal than he should.

We begin, however, with startling winged people entering the building where the Jusenkyo guide works. They have a violent intent, and the narration tells us that Jusenkyo is in danger.

Speaking of danger, however… Akane is accosted by her father, and then later Soun calls out for Ranma. When he arrives, he sees Akane, sitting demurely in a wedding kimono. Genma says now that Ranma’s family is back together, it’s time to move on to the next step. “You don’t want to marry her?” Nodoka asks, when Ranma stammers about them springing this on him. “I d-didn’t say that, I just…” (oh, be still my shipping heart) But then Akane wakes up, and Soun laments having not hit her harder to keep her knocked out longer. She asks what’s with the get-up she’s wearing, and Ranma tells her that it looks good on her; stockier girls look better in kimonos. This gets him kicked through the roof, where he sulks that surprising him like that was no fair, but he also thinks Akane was pretty cute. Then a flock of birds appear in the sky, along with two winged-men, chasing a little girl. Ranma saves her, with some help from Ryoga. Rain starts pouring and the winged men turn into normal men, and the little girl, named Plum, reveals herself to be the daughter of the Jusenkyo guide, and she’s looking for help to save him and the springs.

They take her to the Cat Café and discuss the situation with Mousse, Shampoo, and Cologne, and it’s revealed that these are the legendary inhabitants of Ho’o Peak (often translated as Mount Phoenix). Plum says they’re after the Jusenkyo map, and if they get it, all of Jusenkyo will go dry. The group naturally decides that this can’t happen, as it means they’ll never be uncursed. So they plot to leave (after fighting some Ho’o Peak inhabitants), and the leader of the fighters reveals the map her minions stole while they were in the café, but it’s just a menu.

Akane inquires after Ranma’s packing, and Shampoo tells her he’s coming to live at the Cat Café, citing Jusenkyo problems that aren’t Akane’s business. He tells Akane that until it’s settled, she won’t see him for a while. Genma goes, too. But then, when Shampoo is making a delivery, Kiima attacks Shampoo and places her in a magical egg. When she hatches, she imprints on Kima and does whatever she’s told. Shampoo then seduces part of the map from Mousse, and steals it from the others as well, and it’s revealed that she’s working for the other side. Kima leaves with the map, and cat-Shampoo.

While packing to go to China (to rescue the map and Shampoo), Nabiki tries to sell Ranma a photo of Akane. Ryoga buys it instead, placing it in a wallet opposite a photo of Akari. The Tendos see them off, but Akane is walking along the beach and can’t bear to say goodbye. Ranma angrily punches a hole in the boat and sinks it – so when Akane rushes back to the dock, upset that she missed his leaving, he’s still there floating in the water with Plum and the menagerie.

Back on Ho’o Peak, they’re preparing for the ascension of their king now that they have the map. But he’s nowhere to be seen. Ranma & Co reach hot springs near Ho’o Peak and transform, but then have to face the monster of the springs, which ends up being a kid with a fancy staff. They’re still two days away, so the kid says he can get them there quickly with the staff, and ends up riding it (with a cart hitched on) across the normally-a-two-day journey. Once there, he lures them into a pit trap and says it’s what they deserve for mocking him. Ryoga uses his bakusai tenketus and makes a labyrinth in the caves, and Kima’s henchman attack and collapse rocks on the party. Ryoga loses his wallet and Ranma grabs half to keep Ryoga from dropping, but it gets ripped in two. Then rocks fall and everyone’s separated. But Ranma sees Akane’s face in the rubble above him, and realizes that it’s light on her photo, so he climbs out and pockets the photo.

They all make their way to a dried up well, and use it to climb to the top of the mountain, and realize that this second-Jusenkyo at the top of the mountain must be dried up. Lord Saffron, the boy who trapped Ranma & Co., in lying in his bed resting when he tells Kima that there are mice wandering through the castle. At that moment, Ranma bursts into the room with Mousse and Ryoga and a fight starts. Kima collapses the floor under them, and Ryoga and Mousse end up in a room full of eggs, like the one Kima used on Shampoo. Ranma fights Kima with Saffron’s kinjakan staff, and Saffron says he’ll reward Ranma’s mastery of the weapon by returning Shampoo – in her cat form. Ranma naturally freaks out. Everyone fights their way back into Saffron’s bedroom, and Shampoo jumps back into Kima’s arms while the bed collapses, and the guys fall through. But Ranma’s photo of Akane is dropped, so Saffron suggests kidnapping her and drowning her at Jusenkyo. He shouts down to the guys below that Shampoo will be returned to them at the source of Jusenkyo.

The guys walk toward the cursed springs (after Ryoga takes a detour to Moscow using the kinjakan), and in Japan Akane is kidnapped by birds. Saffron reveals that he’s going to use her to get the kinjakan back. Akane is dropped at Jusenkyo, in front of Kima, and Kima explains that the bird-people use to turn into humans. She also shows Akane the picture they recovered from Ranma, saying “it appears you are Ranma’s weakness.” Akane denies this, and Kima begins to fight her – ultimately resulting in Akane falling into one of the springs.

Ranma and his party come across Akane lying in the road to Jusenkyo. She tells him she doesn’t remember how she ended up there, but offers to help. Ranma says she’ll just get in the way, since she can’t even find them without getting kidnapped. Later that night, Ranma is in the tub soaking (with the kinjakan nearby) and planning revenge on the people who dragged Akane into this when she walks into the bathroom, naked. She tells him that she wants to be with him and confesses (while hugging him from behind) that she fell in at Jusenkyo and is cursed. She worries that he’ll hate her new form, and he insists that he could never hate her; she reacts by launching herself into his arms, declaring how happy she is. Ryoga and Mousse come into the bathroom to ask how long Ranma will be, and Ryoga snaps at the sight and punches the tub, spraying cold water that changing Ranma… but not Akane. She grabs the kinjakan and douses herself with hot water, revealing Kima. She says that they dug a new spring and tossed Akane in it to create the Spring of Drowned Akane. Kima also nabbed the map from Plum.

The bad guys go back to Ho’o Peak and the good guys go through Jusenkyo – only to find all the springs dried up. While they lament their curses, Plum indicates that she can take them to the source of the spring. Akane wakes up in a prison cell. Shampoo meets the guys and fights with them, while Akane overhears that Ranma is an intruder, and she breaks herself out of prison. She’s chased by bird-men through the castle, and Ranma sees her and tries to help her – but he falls down into a seemingly endless pit while someone covers Akane’s mouth and drags her into the darkness.

And that’s where this volume ends. There’s a lot going on, but it’s a really quick read (like, quicker than most graphic novels, even.) The back and forth between the parties is well-paced throughout. It’s just a really solid story, and the Kima/Akane scene is delightful, because uncomfortable Ranma is always fun.

The second last book. Even though the premise of the series is magical (everyone shape-shifts when they encounter water) magical beings/creatures are not really common. And those that they do encounter usually have some kind of explanation that ties it back to the original magic. In this book we are introduced to a race of winged people who do magic and live near the cursed springs. All those who can shape shift are called by the spring guide to come and help.

This volume is one long story arc that doesn't finish where all the main characters travel to China to where the cursed springs are to fight the bad guys and restore the springs.

Hey, an actual adventure rather than just random silliness! A race of bird people have evolved thanks to the transformative powers of Jusenkyo. Now they're searching for the source of the magical springs. The daughter of the recurring character known only as the Jusenkyo guide seeks Ranma's help. Of course Ryoga, Mousse and Shampoo also have a vested interest. A lot of fighting, some twists and turns, and a cliffhanger ending. This is the first volume in a while which doesn't feel phoned in.

Because Jyusenkio.

My second to last review of this fun series.

Ranma and all of the others cursed in Jyusenkio are tracked down by a mysterious group of bird people that want to destroy the cursed lakes, and their hope of being cured along with it.

While in concept it’s similar to the animal people arc, this one has the added component of Gemma joining the fight, sort of, and Akane being involved in the whole event.

Ranma must face alone the most powerful enemy we’ve seen up until this point of the series.

Since the anime series (including the OVAs) ended before they could resolve the central conflict of Ranma 1/2, I wanted to see how the manga ended. There's a lot to like with both the manga and the anime but a lot that is very frustrating. I can't remember what happens in this volume, but it wasn't too bad really. Just not amazing.

Male Ranma and Female Ranma together? It looks creepy. It almost feels they look like siblings IN LOVE!!!
The other story felt like Cinderella with a twist. Creepy!
Nabiki and Ranma is definitely not good. Nope!
I wish there was more Akane and Ranma stories. The last chapter about their names written in paper is okay.

Here we are, the penultimate arc and man, what a climax. Ranma is truly at its best when the Jusenkyo crew team up (Ranma, Ryoga, Mousse, Shampoo), a shame Pantyhose Taro couldn't join this arc but that's probably because if he were it'd be over before it began. My man.

Spoilers!!!!
The one thing that really stands out to me is if the bad guys drown Akane in the spring so they can look like her doesn't that mean that when the men go to break their curse that they will just transfer into another form of a man when splashed with water? Also there is already. A cursed pond of drowned girl so everyone cursed by it looks like female Ranma too?

Ch1-3: Odd story, is Shampoo going to imprint on her after hatching? If Shampoo is nice to Mousse then something is up.

Ch4-6:Poor Ranma all hurt and wanting Akane.breaking

Ch7: Dummy Ranma breaking the bridge. Akane is about to be cursed!!!!!!

Ch8: Ryoga ended up in Moscow LMAO!

OHHHHH!!! BATHING TOGETHER!

Ch9: It was too good to be true :(. Now there is a spring of Akane, so can they each just dig new springs for themselves and get cured?

Ch10: GRRRR Cliff Hanger and only one more manga left before it's all over.

Part 1: Messenger from Jusenkyo: Something attacks the Jusenkyo guide. Genma and Soun knock out Akane and dress her in a wedding kimono. Nodoka is in on the deal. Two bird-beings attack Ranma who is trying to protect a small girl. The girl is Plum and she's the guides daughter.

Cologne knows who the people are. They are after a map of Jusenkyo which, if they get, could cause all the springs to dry up.

Part 2: Battle for the Map!: The group from the mountain attack Ranma cat the Cat Cafe but lose. A reference is made to Lord Saffron back on the mountain. They capture Shampoo.

Part 3: Egg Shampoo: One of the bird-beings takes control of Shampoo and causes her to steal parts of a map. The beings steal t

The second to last volume of Ranma 1/2 - and I really liked it!! The story was intense and I was turning the pages quickly. I was happy nearly the full cast made a return for the last few volumes. I also really liked that the story came full circle and began to end at Jusenkyo, the birth place of the series.

The storyline itself seemed kind of random that the people of Ho'o would just show up, but beyond that, I was really quite pleased with this volume. The beginning of the end and it was great!!

I know I've given all of the Ranma series 5/5 stars, but this one REALLY deserves it! Only one more to go, then it's all over! *cries*

A clan of bird-humanoid warriors are planning on draining Jusenkyo and using it for their own purposes. Can our heroes protect Jusenkyo while protecting what they dearly love?

They say you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. But I did - And I was right ;) This series is amazing! You get genderbender, fantasy, action, romance and slapstick-humor along with intense serious moments, what more can you want?
