Rate this book
In a tale where love defies logic and biology, The Woman Behind the Cat / The Cat Behind the Woman is a later-in-life shapeshifter romance steeped in magical realism, self-discovery, and second chances.

Clara once lived as a cat. Now returned to a woman's body through a mysterious scientific experiment, she must relearn what it means to be human—emotionally, physically, and intimately. At her side is Bruce, her lifelong love, now reincarnated into the form of a majestic Irish wolfhound. Together, they navigate a bond deeper than blood, stronger than time.

From the cobbled streets of postwar Bath to the feverish chaos of 9/11 New York and the wild serenity of the Canadian mountains, Clara and Bruce's journey spans continents and decades. When tragedy strikes on September 11, Bruce becomes an unexpected hero—his sacrifice revealing a hidden strength forged in loyalty and love.

But as years pass, their unaging bodies raise questions, drawing attention in a world that doesn’t understand their paranormal bond. Amid heartbreak, new beginnings, and encounters with those who suspect the truth, Clara finds herself caught between memory and identity, science and soul.

Literary fiction meets science fiction romance in this sweeping novel about the wild shape of love, the limits of transformation, and the ache of being almost—but not quite—human. With undertones of genetic engineering and philosophical longing, Clara’s journey is not only about surviving… it’s about becoming.

Will she and Bruce ever truly belong? Or will their secret remain buried beneath paw prints and pages?

"Would you still love me if I were a 🐛?"
If your answer to the question is yes, go on read the book! If not, swipe left and enjoy the memes.😂

Initial impression - I picked this book because I liked the blurb. It seemed unique. But, I think the cover could have been better and detailed. The title is exactly what the story is all about.

The story is about a woman named Clara and her partner Bruce. Bruce is involved in some confidential experimental stuff.
One night, he had to perform one of those unfinished experiments on Clara to save her life by turning her into a cat.
(The woman behind a cat, got it?).
Many years later, Clara (the cat) founded Bruce again, he turns her into a human Clara and once again they are united. But, Bruce has aged and now in order to live longer than his human form can allow, he is turned into a wolfhound.

This is the story in short! It's fast paced. The writing is beautiful and easy to comprehend. But I couldn't connect with the characters which may be due to the short length of the book.

I'd only recommend it to beginners who want easy going fast books because this book is highly imaginative and transcends reality.

What if a cat suddenly became a woman? Crazy, right? That's what happened to Clara—she began life as a cat, but following a science experiment, she became a stunning woman. Now she must learn how to act like one, and more importantly, how not to act like a cat. I enjoyed the glimpses of the subversive glimpses of her feline nature emerging as she fought to fit into the world as a woman who doesn't age. Alongside Clara is Bruce, who has been reincarnated as an Irish Wolfhound. Their relationship is astounding, and the way that was written made the story all the more compelling.

The flow of the story was amazing—I couldn’t put it down and ended up finishing it in one sitting. It truly was a rollercoaster of emotions, but worth every page. Definitely a 5-star read, and I’d love to read more books from this author because their writing style is just brilliant.

Book Review – The Woman Behind the Cat / The Cat Behind the Woman by Radu Niculescu

Some books are hard to put into a box, and this one is exactly that. The Woman Behind the Cat is a strange, beautiful mix of magical realism, science, and romance that lingers long after you finish it.

The story revolves around Clara, who begins life as a cat and, through a scientific experiment, is suddenly transformed into a woman. What follows is not just her struggle to adjust to her new body, but also her journey of learning what it means to be human—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. There are moments that stay etched in your mind, like the dinner table scene where she instinctively swipes at a fork the way a cat would with its toy. It’s such a simple moment, yet it says so much about identity, about how we are forced to act in ways that don’t always feel natural to who we really are.

At her side is Bruce, incarnated as a loyal Irish wolfhound. Their bond is moving, almost otherworldly, transcending time, form, and even mortality. One of the most powerful parts of the book is Bruce’s act of courage on 9/11—a reminder of how love and loyalty can survive in the darkest moments. But as the years pass and their bodies refuse to age, questions and suspicions arise, adding another layer of tension and mystery to their journey.

What I loved most is how Niculescu blends magic with raw emotion. The writing feels thoughtful and fluid, carrying you through landscapes from postwar Bath to Canadian woods. Beyond romance, this book is about rebirth, memory, longing, and the human need to belong.

💌 In short: a tender, poetic, and one-of-a-kind love story that challenges what it truly means to be human.

Radu Niculescu’s The Woman Behind the Cat is one of those rare books that makes you stop and think...then grin because only a cat could pull off this kind of chaos. 🐾

The story follows Clara, a cat who ends up in a woman’s body after a scientific experiment, and Bruce, her lifelong love who now happens to be… an Irish wolfhound. Together, they stumble through decades of love, loss, and some seriously weird shapeshifting adventures. What I loved most was how the author blends magical realism with deep emotional resonance...love that transcends form, time, and even societal norms. One scene that really stuck with me? Clara at the dinner table, reaching for a fork, only to instinctively swipe it away like a toy. That tiny detail says so much about identity, selfhood, and being forced to act in ways that don’t feel natural.

The plot itself takes wild turns...Clara spends years trapped as a cat, Bruce gets wrongfully imprisoned, and just when you think they’re about to catch a break, the story flips again. Honestly, at times it felt like people were swapping identities as easily as changing apartments, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity. But that’s the beauty of it—the mix of science fiction, magical realism, and paranormal oddities somehow works.

It’s unique, it’s unconventional, and it definitely makes you hug your cat a little tighter after reading. 🐱💫 For me, it’s a solid 5/5 because of how fresh and thought-provoking it felt.

We humans take everything so much for granted, don’t we? We only understand the true value of life when we are on the verge of losing it. This book captures that truth in the most unexpected, hauntingly beautiful way.

Clara once lived as a cat, and now through a mysterious scientific experiment she is returned to a woman’s body. Suddenly, she must relearn what it means to be human: the warmth of touch, the complexity of emotions, the intimacy of love, and the fragility of existence. Her journey isn’t just about surviving; it’s about rediscovering life itself.

At her side is Bruce her lifelong love reborn as a majestic Irish wolfhound. Their bond is unconventional yet profoundly moving, a love that defies form and time. The story doesn’t present love as perfect; instead, it shows love as enduring, transforming, and unyielding even when trapped between species and identities.

What makes this novel so powerful is its blend of literary depth, science fiction intrigue, and philosophical reflection. It asks questions that linger: What does it truly mean to be human? Can love exist beyond physical form? What happens when transformation reshapes not just the body, but the soul?

This is not just a romance, not just science fiction it’s a meditation on life, love, and identity. A book that makes you pause, think, and feel all at once For readers who crave stories that are emotional yet intellectual, strange yet deeply relatable.

The Woman Behind the Cat by Radu Niculescu is a beautifully strange tapestry of love, identity, and transformation

Clara once lived as a cat. Brought back into human form via a mysterious scientific experiment, she now navigates the messy, beautiful complexity of humanity—emotionally, physically, and intimately. Her lifelong love, Bruce, has also returned—but not as a man. Instead, he inhabits the form of a majestic Irish wolfhound. Together, they move through life across stunning backdrops—from postwar Bath to 9/11 New York, all the way to the serene wilds of the Canadian mountains.

This is a novel that dazzles with magical realism grounded in raw truth. Bruce’s act on 9/11 reveals the enduring might of loyalty and love. But as decades pass and their unchanged bodies raise suspicion, Clara is forced to balance memory against identity, science against soul.

Niculescu weaves an unforgettable romance that transcends species. It’s poetic and strange—yet deeply relatable. The themes of rebirth, transformation, and the ache to belong make it more than a genre tale. It questions what it truly means to be human in a world that often misunderstands us.

Whether you’re drawn to speculative fiction or marvels of emotional storytelling, The Woman Behind the Cat is a haunting and unforgettable journey. Pick it up for the magic, stay for the questions it leaves behind.

Meanwhile, Bruce—her lifelong love—is now an Irish wolfhound. Together, they embark on a remarkable journey across time and place—from postwar Bath and the chaos of 9/11 New York to the serene Canadian wilderness. Yet as the years pass and their aging stalls, they attract unwanted attention in a world unprepared for their paranormal reality.

The book blends magical realism, paranormal romance and literary fiction to explore themes of identity, transformation, and enduring love. It’s a story of rebirth, identity and love that defies boundaries —a touching exploration of what it means to reclaim humanity when one’s existence has been fundamentally altered. The narrative is smooth and the storyline is unique. Niculescu has also done well in sketching the characters.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?
I was intrigued by the blurb of this book. Considering it isn’t a lengthy read, I decided to pick it up.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
Although the cover is apt and depicts the story well, I feel it could have been made more visually appealing. The title, however, is very straightforward.

𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
The story is fast-paced and direct. While the plotline is slightly complex, the smooth narration balances it out. The language is lucid, making it accessible.

𝐎𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧:
✓ The story follows a woman who, once a cat, transforms into a human after a science experiment and decides to experience life as one.
✓ I was hooked till the very end. Especially, when I came across Bruce's character.
✓ It explores themes such as shape-shifter romance, second chances, and the meaning of human existence.
✓ I especially loved the book dedication. It was thoughtful and heartfelt.

I recently finished reading The Woman Behind the Cat and The Cat Behind the Woman. Written in third-person POV, the story moves at a medium-to-fast pace, swiftly progressing through a series of events in the timeline.

It follows Clara, a woman who undergoes an experiment that transforms her into a cat , a creature unable to speak, forced to navigate life in silence and face the struggles of her new form. Eventually, she changes back into a human through the same experiment. Alongside her journey, we also see her love story with Bruce, who later transforms into a dog.

The concept was unique and intriguing, and I appreciated how the author intertwined these transformations with themes of love and survival. The writing style was engaging, with some beautiful metaphors and quotes scattered throughout. However, one aspect I found a little challenging was the dialogue formatting...instead of using inverted commas, conversations were written after a dash, which made it slightly harder to follow who was speaking.

At just 120 pages, it’s a quick read (took me about an hour and a half) and a great pick for anyone who enjoys short, fast-paced stories with unique storyline. If that sounds like your kind of book, I’d recommend giving it a try.

Reading this novel felt like stepping into a world both familiar and utterly strange. Clara’s journey from feline to human is handled with a delicate balance of wonder and poignancy, exploring not just the mechanics of transformation but the emotional and sensory awakening that comes with it. The bond between Clara and Bruce transcends conventional love, creating a connection that is at once tender, heartbreaking, and fiercely loyal. Their shared history, reimagined across time and form, gives the story a depth that lingers long after the last page.

I was especially drawn to the way the narrative moves across landscapes and decades, from the intimate streets of Bath to the sprawling chaos of New York and the serene isolation of the Canadian wilderness. Each setting mirrors Clara’s own evolution—her struggle to reconcile memory, identity, and desire in a body that feels simultaneously alien and familiar. The novel’s exploration of love, loyalty, and the boundaries of humanity is both thought-provoking and deeply moving, making it a rare blend of literary and speculative fiction that stays with you.

As the title suggests this book stands out from my usual reads. Blending science fiction with elements of the magical realism and paranormal. The story spans several decades, exploring the highs and lows in the lives of Clara and Bruce.

Plot:
The plot takes an unusual turn when Clara, unknowingly involved in a mysterious experiment, finds herself transformed into a cat. She remains in this form for over a decade, during which Bruce is wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Fate eventually reunites them but not without another unexpected twist. Once again, their lives are turned upside down, and they’re forced to adapt to a new reality and move forward.

To uncover how their journey unfolds, you’ll have to read the book yourself.

My thoughts:
While the story is undeniably engaging and imaginative, I couldn’t help but feel amused and slightly skeptical at how casually body switching and transformations were happening. At times, it felt like characters were swapping identities as easily as changing apartments.

Still, if you're in the mood for something unconventional and thought provoking, this book is worth a read.

The woman behind cat by Radu niculescu is a fictional tale about a cat who transforms in a woman's body through a scientific experiment and how her life takes a difficult turn as she is supposed to learn how to be a woman- physically and emotionally. Through this difficult journey she has Bruce who is incarnated as an irish wolfhound. Together with him, she tackles so many challenges and tragedies but admist all this , everyone gets curious of their unageing bodies and questions arise. Author has done an amazing job portraying magical realism along with the weight of longingness in their hearts. The thing which stayed with me the most is the emotional resonance and how their love transcends form, time and societal norms. It is unique blend of literary and scientific literature and fantasy. One instance from the story that comes in my mind is when she reaches for a fork at the dinner table but instinctively throws it with her hand just like a cat swiping it's toy. It's a scene which shows how one is forced to act in a certain way which is not your true self and what you don't truly feel. This book is one of a kind .
A 5/5 read

This is a love story that dances across the border between the ordinary and the miraculous—an elegant exploration of identity, connection, and the heart’s capacity to transcend time and form. Clara’s journey, unfolding after she returns from living as a cat through a mysterious scientific experiment, is both tender and surreal. Her awakening into human flesh brings with it a flood of memory, longing, and a deep questioning of what it truly means to be who you are.

What captivated me most is the relationship between Clara and Bruce, her soulmate from another life—now enacted through the loyal form of a majestic Irish wolfhound. It’s impossible not to feel the ache and devotion in their silent exchanges, a bond deeper than shared history and stronger than mortality. Their journey unfolds across deceptively ordinary landscapes—from postwar Bath’s cobblestones to the hush of Canadian woods—yet each setting hums with emotional resonance, carrying them through decades and countless thresholds of change.

What if your cat suddenly turned into a woman? Wild, right? That’s basically the story here. Clara starts out as a cat, but thanks to a science experiment, she becomes human again only she has to figure out how to be human while still carrying bits of her feline nature. Then there’s Bruce, her forever love, who ends up reincarnated as an Irish Wolfhound. The two of them share such a unique bond that goes way beyond the usual romance.

The story moves super fast, with scenes across Bath, New York during 9/11, and even the Canadian mountains. The writing is beautiful and really easy to follow, so I flew through it in one sitting. Honestly, it felt like a rollercoaster emotional, strange, and totally different from anything I’ve read before.

I’ll admit I didn’t fully connect with the characters at times (maybe because the book’s a bit short), but the originality makes up for it. Definitely recommending this one to beginners or anyone who wants a quick, imaginative read that mixes romance, sci-fi vibes, and magical realism.

It's the story of Clara and Bruce's unconditional love. Clara, once a woman, was now a cat. An experiment to save the life of a loved one turned partially successful - nobody knew. Bruce was blamed and imprisoned for the crime he never committed. He spent half of his life imprisoned, wondering about the what-ifs. On the other hand, Clara, navigating her life as a cat, was always searching for the only love of her life.
Will they ever meet again?

Written in simple, detailed, and engaging language with a fast pace and interesting storyline, the story explores different emotions like love, longing, trust, grief, and timeline. The protagonist's journey of love, both as human and animal, is a realization of finding and continuing to love unconditionally - two people yearning to be together and promising forever. Being separated yet finding their way back is heartwarming. I loved the story, plot, scientific exploration of human soul and energy, and portrayal of love.

If you love sci-fi, this one is a must-read.

Clara's adventure is truly one of a kind. Once a cat, she undergoes a mysterious experiment that transforms her back into a human, suddenly immersing her in the complex and beautiful experience of being human—emotionally, physically, and even intimately. Her lifelong love, Bruce, also makes a return, but not in his human form; instead, he inhabits the body of a stunning Irish wolfhound.

Although the narrative is certainly captivating and creative, I found myself both entertained and somewhat doubtful about the nonchalant way body-switching and transformations were handled throughout. Their quiet interactions convey a pain and commitment that cannot be overlooked—a connection that seems more profound than history and more powerful than life itself.

In the end, this book leaves you reflecting on love in its most unusual, timeless forms—reminding us that even through transformations, lifetimes, and impossible circumstances, true connection endures.

"Yet, I have lived many lives—some gentle and serene, others stark and jarring."
The book gives a transformation from science fiction to romance.

The author portrays the central theme through the woman who was previously a cat.
"...flying in my mind’s eye back to the thrill of leaping."

The book is exciting in narrating an Interesting story of bygone era. Her life experiences are vividly portrayed.

The presence of the cat adds an Interesting, almost mystical dimension that makes the story perfectly different from usual romance novels.

"I lingered at his apartment, our conversations sparse yet charged with unspoken understanding."
The narrative sparks the essence of romance along with the fiction of transformation.

"... they concluded that he had taken my life in a reckless experiment gone awry."
The book is thoroughly written with science fiction.

The chapters are so sweet to read and feel the warmth of old days.
Overall a great read for all of us.

An amazing read which you should definitely read. Story was really very engaging and interesting. Clara was a cat once. Through an enigmatic scientific experiment, she has now been sent back to a woman's body and must re-learn what it means to be human on an intimate, physical, and emotional level. Bruce, her longstanding partner, is by her side; he has taken on the appearance of a magnificent Irish wolfhound. They negotiate a relationship that is stronger than time and deeper than blood.

This engaging book explores the untamed nature of love, the boundaries of metamorphosis, and the pain of being nearly—but not quite—human. It combines literary fiction with science fiction romance. Clara's journey, which has hints of genetic engineering and philosophical longing, is about becoming rather than just surviving. I highly recommend this book to you all. You all should definitely try this.

It is a short but powerful read that mixes love, memory, and magical realism in such an unusual way. The story of Clara, who is turned into a cat by Bruce in a desperate attempt to save her life, instantly pulled me in. Her return to human form years later is both touching and unsettling, especially when she realizes Bruce himself has changed into a wolfhound.

What I loved most was how the book captured the ache of love that refuses to fade, even when bodies and forms no longer stay the same. Clara’s journey of rediscovering herself, while trying to hold onto Bruce, felt emotional and deeply human despite the fantasy layer. The writing is smooth and easy to follow, and the pace keeps you hooked throughout.

The idea is refreshing, the emotions linger, and though the cover could have been stronger, the story itself is unforgettable.

Radu Niculescu’s The Woman Behind the Cat is subtle, layered, and surprisingly moving. It captures small, everyday moments and turns them into something meaningful. The story lingers on the edge of mystery but never loses its emotional depth.

I enjoyed how the writing lets you read between the lines instead of spelling everything out. It’s thoughtful, a little haunting, and perfect for anyone who appreciates slow, reflective storytelling.

What makes it stand out is the way it handles solitude and human connection. It doesn’t rush, it doesn’t overstate instead, it creates a space where you can pause and feel the weight of silence, memory, and hidden emotions. That quiet honesty is what makes this book worth reading.

When I picked this title with The Woman Behind the Cat / The Cat Behind the Woman: A Later in Life Romance of Rebirth, Magical Realism Fiction, Paranormal Romance about Self-Discovery, Memory, and the Wild Shape of Love by Radu Niculescu is an amazing and innovative genre.
You will meet the main characters of Clara and Bruce who have endless responsibility of love and longing . With each twist that strikes off the biggest and the compassion that keeps them ties is an amazing form of writing that the author has portrayed in with the longevity and provides excellent ability to reconcile the points with that perception of the storyline.

after a scientific experiment. Her struggle is not just with a new body, but with learning how to be human how to feel, love, and belong. Small moments, like her batting at a fork at dinner, beautifully show that clash between instinct and identity.

Beside her is Bruce, a loyal Irish wolfhound whose bond with her feels timeless. His act of courage on 9/11 is unforgettable, showing love’s power even in tragedy. But as the years pass and neither of them age, mystery and tension grow.

I loved most , what Niculescu blends magic with deep emotion. It’s a story of rebirth, memory, and longing a reminder that being human is as much about the heart as it is about the body.

This novel took me by surprise with its originality. Clara’s transformation from cat to human is written with both tenderness and depth, while Bruce’s rebirth as an Irish wolfhound adds an unusual but moving layer to their connection.

The narrative travels across different eras and locations, weaving history with elements of science and magical realism. I was drawn into how the characters wrestle with questions of love, loss, and identity while navigating extraordinary circumstances.

It’s a story that manages to feel both otherworldly and deeply human, leaving me thinking about the boundaries of love and the sacrifices people make for it.

Beautifully written and unforgettable

This book is unlike anything I’ve read before; strange, magical, and deeply moving. Clara’s journey from cat to woman is not just a fantastical idea, but a touching meditation on what it means to be human. Her bond with Bruce is tender, powerful, and unforgettable.

The writing style is amazing, lyrical yet effortless, with a flow that keeps you hooked while making you feel every emotion. It blends magic, reality, and romance so naturally that the story feels both otherworldly and real.

A heartfelt, unusual, and beautifully told story that lingers long after the last page. Truly worth reading.
