Sarah is an amnesiac, haunted by a past she can't remember. She's not aware of being an exile from a community of beings known only as ancients, the predecessor of the modern witch, vampire, and werewolf. After an emotionally abusive few years being raised by a vampire family she believes is her own, she meets David, the childhood friend she can't remember. But they're not kids anymore, and when a deep emotional connection between them creates nothing but confusion, Sarah must reclaim her past and find ou who and what she is.
Sarah
Lost. Alone. Adrift. I’m a ghost in my own life, haunted by a dream of being chased through the woods by shadowy figures that must exist within my lost childhood memories. With what my family was like, I’ve always thought it was for best that the car accident blotted out the worst of their emotional abuses, but then I meet David and the dream starts to visit me nightly.
I can’t sleep, can’t think when he’s around, and I don’t want to. There’s something about him, something that brings me to life like no other thing has. It’s more than a want, it’s a need and when my clan leader tasks me with determining whether he’s a threat to us, all I can tell for sure is that he isn’t a vampire, a witch, or a werewolf.
What he is, I don’t know, but it scares me how invested I am in the heady combination of peace and excitement I feel in his presence.
David
I came here searching for a lost child, for the girl ripped screaming and crying from my arms. All I’ve ever wanted was to save her and bring her home, but we’re not children anymore, and I can’t pretend I’m not hopelessly attracted to the stunning woman she’s grown into. The secrets of our past are mine to share, but how can I when doing so will ruin the life she’s struggled to build for herself?
I’m supposed to stay away, to be her friend, but I never expected the pull between us to be so powerful. She doesn’t know who she is, what she is, and as much as I want to shield her from the truth, there is no moving forward until she’s confronted the past.
Ancients is a dual POV, MF urban paranormal romance secret identities, amnesia, vampires, witches, TIGER shifters, and heartbreaking romance.
This book is about a vampire named Sarah, set in a modern world where secret supernatural communities made up from vampires, werewolves and witches called clans live in secret amongst humans. If vampire kill meticulously the humans on the news call it a crimes deal gone wrong, at night the humans are fed on by vampire clans where as werewolves remain secluded and witches deal out favours at a price.
We don’t see much of werewolves and witches in this book, I hope the author delves deeper into those communities in future books because it would be interesting to read. There is a scene involving a couple witches, though only briefly due to Sarah’s need of using their library and including references to her past with them. Mainly, this book is vampire focused because that’s what Sarah and her clan, The Shades, are species wise. Sarah not only possesses vampire qualities but also some rare witch powers as well, this makes her a strong weapon and protector of the clan. And she’s so much more, but I won’t spoil it for you.
Though, Sarah’s past keeps her from being happy in her life despite escaping her abusive past with her parents. She has nightmares of shadows, she barely drinks enough to stay strong, the guilt from past kills haunts her and she’s fairly lonely.
That is until… a man named David comes along, taking the same science course at her university and giving off power vibes. The leader of the Shades clan, Adam, tasks Sarah with finding out if David is a threat to the clan. They go on a double date, they hit it off.
Little does Sarah know that David has been searching for her for a very long time, they inevitably get involved and then there’s squabbles about their pasts and their feelings and their decisions of the future. Ultimately, they accept each other through the deep love they share but with the threats from other clans and the island of ancients to consider they’ll have to stand united.
“I’d lost all sanity where she was concerned.”
“You know how I feel about you. I love you, and I think you’re the most beautiful woman in the world.”
“David had come here to find me, to save me. Now it was my turn to be his protector. To trust we were strong enough together to face whatever waited for us, and come back out again.”
Overall, I found this book an alright little supernatural book. It’s short and sweet, an easy read. I like Sarah, her past brings depth to the character. I like the inventive names of the clans and such; the bones, the ghosts, the shades, the lucky draws, the witches of stain, etc. It has a fairly intriguing plot and characters, the mention of the Bermuda Triangle of a fun addition- always like hearing about theories about the Bermuda. The mental connection the characters form are cute, always love seeing that in books, Sarah and David are so adorable with each other.
Includes; childhood friends, spicy scenes, supernatural communities, fated mates, magic, blood-letting, love at first sight, traumatic past, references to abusive parents, haunting nightmares, memory loss, shifting, jealous love interest, he falls first, hidden secrets revealed, etc.
With a secret about who and what they are, with a possible war on the horizon, with a mystery island too, I find myself cursing the little cliffhanger the author left me on. Never the less, thank you for the ARC opportunity.
I was not thinking that this book was going to be what it was. Honestly, I'm surprised that I was able to finish this. It feels almost ant-everything that I loved about this author's previous releases. Maybe I've just been steeped in the dark reads for too long or something. This book gave off a kind of self hatred that was almost an instant turn off. Sarah, our FMC, is a vampire who hates drinking blood. So she pretty much walks around half starved for most of the time we see her. So, I'm going to pause and explain why this was an issue for me. So, she proves within a short while that she can feed without harming people because she lets a man go that she was feeding on. WIthout him being any wiser to the situation. Already, she has given herself a solution to the issue. She doesn't want to kill people and we see that she doesn't HAVE to. Instead, she barely takes what she needs and continues on half starved and drinking cold blood. You'd think she'd realize that allowing herself to walk around half starved would make her more dangerous than just feeding fully off of multiple people. I understand that she has trauma from abusive parents but ma'am, figure out a solution that you can live with. Instead she half hates herself for most of the book and we get the whole internal monologue of it. Next thing is she's living in a house with her ex and his next. That was such a weird situation. Like, it was giving frat house. So then we meet David, our MMC. While he is not one to self hate, he is one to lay around and let folks beat him up. Once you find out what David and Sarah actually are, it makes their whole thing that much worse in my opinion. Like, I understand the whole, just because you have power don't abuse it, idea BUT not to the expense of bodily harm. So, after we get a history lesson on them and what they are and how we got to where we are....I was just....not happy. I don't know, maybe I'm chaotic at heart but, I fully embrace the whole I'm nice until you push me mantra. They are on the "oh no you pushed me, just don't hurt me too bad" train. It was not what I was expecting at all.
This book is full on angst like you wouldn't believe. The whole fact that neither one of them were commiting to doing something about the tension and almost moments between them was about to drive me up the wall. When they actually finally got together, I not only didn't care anymore, I actually skipped the whole thing. 1 out of 5 for the spice. The reasoning behind why David wouldn't do anything with Sarah was silly and felt thrown in there just to explain why things didn't happen before. Overall, I give this book a 3 out of 5. It just had such a different vibe then what I thought was going to happen in this story. I felt like a lot of the things that happened didn't have a truly valid reason for them happening. Some of the explanations that were given for the actions of some of the characters felt insufficient. This story just wasn't for me. Don't let that stop you from reading it though. I'm more than likely just a deviant. I think, if you're looking for soft, angsty almost YA vibes from your PNR then this is definitely the book for you.
Sarah doesn't remember who she was before the accident. Raised by a vampire family that never felt like home, she’s haunted by a dream of being hunted in the woods. Then she meets David, a stranger who feels anything but, and everything shifts. He’s not human, not vampire, not anything she’s been warned about, but she’s drawn to him in a way that defies logic. With her identity unraveling and powers she doesn’t understand awakening, Sarah is forced to dig into a past that refuses to stay buried, and it might just destroy everything she thinks she knows.
Spillin’ the Book Tea: This book pulled me in from page one. There’s something addictive about watching a character claw their way out of confusion and reclaim pieces of who they are, especially when it’s layered with forbidden feelings, shadowy threats, and old magic. Sarah's journey is equal parts mystery and slow-burn heat, and her chemistry with David? It delivers emotionally, physically, and in ways that had me fully locked in.
The supernatural world here is fresh. We’re not rehashing the same old vampire-werewolf-witch tropes. Instead, Knightly gives us something older, darker, and more dangerous. I liked how the story didn’t feel rushed but never dragged either. The romantic tension simmers under every scene between Sarah and David, and the payoff? Satisfying without being over-the-top.
This wasn’t just a fantasy romance with spice, though there’s plenty of that. It was also about trauma, memory, and finding your footing when you’ve been kept off balance for too long. If you’re into emotionally scarred characters finding connection in the middle of supernatural chaos, you’ll want this on your shelf.
The Vibes It Brings: 🧠 Amnesia but make it supernatural 🔥 Slow-burn tension with real spice 🩸 Vampires with questionable ethics 🧙♀️ Magic older than modern labels 👀 Found-you-again energy 🫣 Secrets hiding in dreams ❤️🔥 That one person who makes the noise fade 🌕 Ancient bloodlines and modern messes 💔 Emotional manipulation and hard-won growth 🧬 What even are you?
TL;DR: A spicy supernatural romance with real emotional weight and a mystery that unfolds at just the right pace. Ancients blends fantasy, angst, and desire into a story that hooks you with every twist. A must-read for fans of dark lore, slow-burn chemistry, and a good identity crisis.
Closer to 3.75 stars but, a good read to pass the time.
This review is based upon the advanced reader copy I received.
This book is intended for mature readers over the age of 18. It contains violence on page, and discussion of childhood trauma. There are depictions, and dialogue that are open door descriptive in nature.
The relationship between the two main characters could actually be described more as a slow burn. Rather than “spicy” throughout.
I did like the basic storyline, characters, and plot but I struggled at times with the actual composition of this book. It was difficult for me to get drawn into the story at first. It took a few chapters before I felt like I had enough information about the characters, and backstory.
I also struggled with the gang type depiction, and dynamics. With the advanced “history” of vampires we have today, and combined with the other more historically accurate depictions available on the market. That can be find within places like All Souls.
I am not sure if I personally will want to continue reading this series any further. I do encourage others to take the time to see if this series is worth your time. Not everyone enjoys the same genres, and styles of dialogue.
This just wasn’t really for me. Regardless of how much I had hoped it would be. Basing these hopes on the initial description I was given.
I received the advance reader copy of this book for free, and I am choosing to leave my honest albeit critical review.
Thank you Faye Knightly for selecting me for this Arc review. I am writing this review completely unbiased. I throughly enjoyed the world and character building with this book. I've read a fair bit of supernatural fiction and this was a really nice change. I loved that it wasn't a typical known race and that the author had created something different with the Ancients.
Seeing Sarah struggling with herself at the start and not living her best life clearly traumatised was tough. However David coming in as her knight and shining armour was perfect. The chemistry written between these two was electric you could sense the sparks from the moment they laid eyes on each other. Seeing Sarah slowly find herself and her true nature through David's help was so healing for her character. To have had that tough start to her life and him slowly starting to show her a different way was written so perfectly. 🥺
Let's not forget when the spice hit it did in fact hit for these two so ravenous they couldn't even keep apart!🌶️🥵 I'm looking forward to a possible next book and learning more about David's upbringing and world from which Sarah missed. Needing more healing and closure for this duo! Also keen to uncover more of this world 🌎. Thank you for the enjoyable read 💗

Set in a supernatural world of vampires, shifters and witches, Sarah has been living with a vampire clan and uses her powers to help keep them safe. When she's asked to spy on a new arrival, it starts to unlock her past in an unexpected way. She's drawn to the stranger, and when he reveals he knows her true identity and how she lost her memories as a child, her life changes forever. It's a low stakes slow burn romance, with some spice, angst, healing, mystery, and sacrifice. I liked that it wasn't a typical shifter or vampire story, and there wasn't the insta love but instead a connection builds and the MMC is hesitant. At times the characters were a little frustrating with their choices or communication, and I felt some of the magical aspects were glossed over, but it was intriguing with the references to the island, and there are lots of questions still to be explored.
I very much enjoyed this story. The world building is familiar but has an original twist. It’s dual POV, but primarily focuses on Sarah POV. It is her story so it makes sense and her growth and healing are the primary focus on the book. I feel like there should have been more on the David POV since some of his choices would make more sense with inner dialogue that explains them. There are vampires, shifters, and witches that in a mildly dystopian modern era that is the start of what should be an interesting tale. I hope to see where this story goes. I got an ARC copy.
I really enjoyed reading this. I’ve read other works of Faye’s and this was just as good. I thought the character build up was great and the plot was intriguing.
I loved that you get to know David and Sarah’s history and how it all falls into place as you keep reading. There are secrets being kept and misunderstandings and even though they are not human, the emotions they portray are definitely that. It was such a lovely bond that existed between them and such a sweet slow burn romance. I did, however, get really, really frustrated at David in parts of the book lol. but all was forgiven in the end 😊
The story finished well and I do hope we get another book on this couple as I was left wanting more.
I love this book! Set in a fantasy setting filled with vampires, witches, werewolves, and the mysterious "Ancients", this book does not disappoint! The fantasy aspect is familiar, but it has it's own variations that make it more than just another vampire book, and I like that. This is the beginning of a series and I'm anxiously awaiting the next book. It's definitely a slow burn, but once it heats up, the spice is 😘👌 "chef's kiss"! I wouldn't really consider this to be a dark romance, but it is a sweet, spicy, romantasy that will pull you in and make you lose sleep in order to read just one more chapter! I am honored to have been chosen as an arc reader, and this is my honest review!
I was given the privilege of reading this book as an ARC. The author did an amazing job of building the character development and relationship in such a way that I felt their emotions right along with them. the paranormal component is something I've never read before which was a nice change from the typical elements that are so popular right now. the book definitely read as more of a romance than fantasy, but it is not a stand alone book, so we might see more of the magical elements and fantasy aspects in the next book. overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be looking out for book 2!
Told through a captivating dual POV, this story immediately pulled me in. The character development was rich and layered, and the plot unfolded with just the right amount of intrigue. I loved gradually discovering David and Sarah’s shared past - it was like peeling back the layers of a mystery, each revelation more satisfying than the last. Even though they aren’t human, the emotions they experience are raw, relatable, and deeply human. Their bond is beautiful, and the slow burn romance felt authentic and heartwarming. That said, there were definitely moments when David frustrated me to no end - but it only added to the emotional depth of the story.
For full disclosure, I was given an advance copy to review. Just because of life issues is this review late.
Definitely not for younger readers. Lots of sex and violence. A very unique story with a ton of twists and turns. Ran a little slow and I wanted it to pick up faster. Once it did, it seemed it was centered entirely on sex. Based on the story, I understand why but I found myself rolling my eyes and just wanting the story to get back to the story. I would have liked a deeper dive into the paranormal world.
All in all, it was an easy read and I will read the next one. I’m eager to read more about both MC backstories as there seems to be so much there.
I literally read this book in 2 days. I was hooked from the beginning. The chemistry between Sarah and David is to die for. Her past is gone, erased from the elders. She thought she was a vampire and come to find out she’s not. I don’t wanna give any spoilers away. So I’m just gonna say just go ahead and clear your day because you’re gonna be hooked. The connection that Sarah and David have from the first time that they met will have you kick in your feet in anticipation. And of course, the ending of the book makes you want to know what happens next, so I’m patiently waiting for a book 2.
Slow burn romance with a good bit of young love/angst. The central plot is a little loosey-goosey, but the relationship between Sarah and David is really where this book shines. There is some pretty good spice (probably 🌶️🌶️.5) but it doesn’t hit until pretty late in the book so be prepared to wait for it.
I think this book sets up nicely for some good world building in the next one, leaving you not exactly on a cliff hanger but wanting the next chapter.
Overall, an enjoyable read and I’ll be coming back for the next in the series when it is released!
I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this book! It is for sure a romantasy, focused on the relationship but with a unique and interesting plot. Although the relationship came together rather quickly, the development of it was a slow burn and the sexual tension made me want to smack the MMC in the face, in a good way LOL! I loved the soul-bond vibes and that the FMC had a traumatic past but was still mature and understanding. The MMC was intense in his obsession with her, but was a kind and gentle type of person at the same time. Also, the spice be spicing! 🥵
This is definitely a unique read. However, I really loved the authors deep dive into the history of supernaturals. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It’s a history of two Sarah and David lost to each as children. Sarah can’t remember part of her childhood and is thrown into the path of David many years later.
I know sounds cryptic. This is one you just have to read, get to know each character. The side characters are also wonderful. There are some triggers the author lists them at the beginning. Definitely a good read
I enjoyed reading this book and loved the ancients and the history behind them. This is a slow burn but once the tension is essentially broken things get super hot. The book focuses more on the relationship between the main characters, David and Sarah with some dual POV segments from David. Even though this is an urban fantasy setting I was finding myself wishing for more fantasy to the story but I still enjoyed reading this. The story doesn’t feel over yet either so I’m curious what may come next.
I took me forever to read this book, and I ended up reading 7 books between the start and finish. The story was interesting enough that it warranted a second star but there are a few things I couldn’t get past. Lots of contradictory errors on almost every page. There was virtually no world building, only character interaction. I would have loved some descriptive narrative that was barely in these pages. Whoever edited this book did the author a disservice because this story has the makings for greatness but this was underwhelming and sorely lacking.
I was lucky to receive this as an ARC book and I absolutely adored it! The two main characters draw you in from page one. Their romantic connection is amazing! The slow burn is well worth it! The spice in this book is definitely *chef’s kiss* I had a hard time putting this book down! It was such a well written romantasy with some super great twists and turns along the way. I can’t wait to read more about David and Sarah in book 2!
What can I say about this book? This is not the vampire romance you think it is, in the best of ways. The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife and you will absolutely be wanting to smack some sense into the main characters. The focus on the mental going on for each of them and how they handle the events around them is beyond comparison and something I don't see enough of in books. I would reread this book a thousand times over.
I was happy to be an ARC reader for this! This book was a slow burn that does not disappoint. What a great start the series and look forward to the continuation of David and Sarah's story. I love a very deboted MMC. David is great! I enjoyed the dual POV. There's times I wish there was less internal dialog but that is just a personal preference. I look forward to learning more about The Ancients and what mysteries may unfold in the next book.
Set in the 90's this modern urban vibe book is going to take you on a journey! Witches, shifters, and vampires all come together as Sarah's story begins. Can she overcome her past and finally find where she belongs? This book will grab you as you go on a journey of past horrors, new beginnings, and future adventures! Sarah and David's story is just beginning and I cannot wait to see where it'll lead!
Firstly, I loved the plot. It was original and kept my attention. I also loved both main characters, Sarah and David. (Even though David frustrated me at times. ) This book had supernatural, secrets, lots of emotions, tension, and spice. I really enjoyed how Sarah's mystery started to unfold. Seeing her growth and healing was so good. I loved how the relationship developed between the main characters too. What a great beginning!
I was an ARC reader for this book and I'm glad I did! I found it hard to get into to begin with but once I got over myself and got into the book - I loved it! I am a sucker for dual POV stories! So this hit the mark for me. I loved the devotedness of our MMC David towards Sarah and the slow burn was delicious! Character growth in the Ancients is so good and you start to feel invested!
Highly recommend if you like slow-burn, vampires, werewolves, supernatural in general!!!
Sarah always thought as herself as a vampire, but when she is set up on a double date her life changed forever… Her date David is her exes (clan leader) new roommate and she was tasked to figure out what kind of supernatural he is. He’s not what anyone thinks he is and she will learn neither is she. I absolutely adore Sarah and David and their story of rediscovering and love. There are many twist and turns and you never know why secret may come to light…

This book is a captivating vampire romance with a unique twist.
The portrayal of vampires is intriguing, though I believe the ancients aren't as pure and innocent as they believe themselves to be.
I was completely absorbed by this story; it's a slow burn filled with many twists and turns that keep you engaged. And that ending? I’m not convinced the characters are truly safe returning to where the ancients reside.
I was invited to read an ARC of this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sarah and David are both easy characters to connect with. The storyline is fun and keeps you wanting more. I love the Buffy vibes it gives off.
I do think it felt a little stuck on one point for too long. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book to any Buffy lovers.
This is a great read. the story is phenomenal. it gives you a good plot and then leaves you hanging.. Faye did a superb job of blending the spice, the intrigue, and a fabulous build up... I recommend this read if you like vampires/werewolves/ancient beings.....

I was part of the ARC and I am so glad I was accepted. I honestly wasn't too sure of what I was getting myself into but I was happy I did. The book was great, it was well written and the storyline was easy to follow while simultaneously being something I could sink my teeth into. I would absolutely recommend to anyone who loves a good supernatural vibe.
A modern day story with witches, shifters and vampires. Three of my favorite things! All in one story. David and Sarah are great characters and I love seeing their growth in this story. Can't wait for the "rest of the story" in the next book. I received an advance review copy at no cost and am leaving this review voluntarily.
