Demon Singer #1

Demon Singer I

Rate this book
Vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, false goddesses, fairies, goblins; Soul Singer Lyric feared none of them. On the day he cast his Soul Song into the Verge to tie forever to one of the mysterious and powerful Vergers, something entirely unique occurred. For the first time in history, a Soul Singer cast so far through the Verge his Song landed in Hell itself and tied him to the very thing he'd pledged his life to fight.

Now he has a year to find a way to sever a bond that is supposed to be eternal and unbreakable, if he doesn't, the Guild will consider him fallen and treat him like any other demon.

As if this wasn't enough, Lyric, the demoness Acheron and the mysterious swordswoman, Cadence, learn of a prophecy that leads to them becoming inextricably tied up in the first supernatural war the earth has seen in centuries. From Boston to Louisiana to California, the Soul Singer and his companions are driven all the way to the second-sight city of Markhato, where free will kicks destiny in the teeth.

I enjoyed Demon Singer quite a bit. I don't read much urban fantasy for fear that it's all bad Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan-fiction. Thankfully, that's not the case! Demon Singer has a very compelling protagonist, Lyric, and watching him and his relationships develop throughout the adventure is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the dynamic between him and the demon to whom he's tied, Acheron. I think those two characters finally taught me what a "love/hate" relationship really looks like.

The plethora of fantasy creatures included as nameless enemies worked well to establish the scope of the world while also serving to show off the abilities and power of the major characters. By the time the stakes escalated, I had complete faith that the good guys would win the fight. Thankfully, there was still tension and doubt because the final battle was really just a backdrop for the primary struggle of Lyric and Acheron's tie -- a conflict that those two did not seem as well equipped to handle.

The reason I gave Demon Singer 4 out of 5 was because the book could have used more editing. A number of sentence-level issues in the version I read disrupted the flow and caused the mental film I was watching to skip a few times. There were also times when I wished for more information and didn't quite get it such as the basic fundamentals of soul singing.

This book sets up a robust world of musical magic and bizarre creatures that could theoretically exist just beyond our sight that I really want to believe is real. All kinds of fun things could occur in future books and I'm interested to see where this goes. Well done.

Clever and original...great use of musical elements and a fresh take on familiar themes. Don't be put off by the title if you are worried it is a scary book or disrespectful of religion...it is neither religious nor irreligious. Just a very quick paced, interesting, witty read that any lover of the fantasy genre will enjoy.

Excellent job of adding something new to the world of fantasy! The main character is something new and exciting that holds your interest front start to finish. Great story. Great use of other creatures of fantasy in a new way. Can't wait for book 2!

Creative and well written! I always know a good book when I am thinking about the story and the characters when I'm not reading it! Wasn't too sure about the way the book began, as you feel like you step into the middle of something, but the author does a great job of pulling it all together and filling in the details. This genre usually isn't my thing, but there is more to the story then one might expect. I am eagerly awaiting the next book(s)!

Great and entertaining read

I loved the story and am anxiously awaiting the sequel! For the last 3 days every spare moment was spent reading the Demon Singer! An adult Harry Potter story.
