Brendan Duffy is a Melbourne-based speculative fiction writer with a doctorate in molecular genetics and current interests ranging from the history of biocontrol disasters to epidemiology, with an extended stopover at table tennis. Brendan is a member of SuperNOVA writers' group, and his stories, 'Louder Echo' and 'Come to Daddy', won the Aurealis Award for science fiction short story in 2003 and 2004.

A mischievous homunculus named Ecce turns against his creator, Lazzaro Spallanzani. Ecce creates his own homunculi and prestidigitates. Plays out as a science vs. religion allegory.
