I used to be the darling of Sparkwood. Until the day they arrested my husband.

Now I'm a cautionary tale. An outcast. A pariah. The monster's wife.

I used to dream big in this little town. Now my only goal is making it through the day intact.

Then Eddie Landry walks into my world. He's ten years younger. A single dad. Steady, kind, and entirely too good-looking for my sanity. He makes me feel safe. Makes me smile again. Makes me feel everything.

Because Eddie doesn't see some woman from the headlines. He sees me.

But happiness is fleeting. My past returns with a vengeance—threatening to bury us all.

The only way to keep the man I love and his son safe is to walk away. Pretend we meant nothing and break both our hearts in the process.

It's a terrible choice. But it's mine to make.

A later-in-life, small-town romance about finding safety after betrayal—and learning to want again.

This story honestly felt like an emotional hug and a heartbreak at the exact same time.

Kiki’s pain felt so real because you could see how deeply the town’s judgment had worn her down. I loved that her healing wasn’t sudden or perfect. It happened slowly, in small moments, and that made it hit even harder emotionally.

Eddie was exactly the kind of hero this story needed. He was patient, steady, protective, and never once made Kiki feel like she had to earn kindness. The way he saw her as more than her past genuinely made my heart ache. Their relationship felt soft and comforting even during the messier moments, and Theo added so much warmth and sweetness to the story.

What really stayed with me was how emotional and tender everything felt. The chemistry was great, but it was the quiet intimacy, support, and feeling of safety between these characters that made this book so memorable for me.

I finished this book feeling emotional, comforted, and way too attached to this little family.

This was my first M.L. Broome book and I really enjoyed it. Katherine “Kiki” Wilder’s life changed overnight when her husband was charged with sex trafficking, she knew nothing and the entire town of Sparkwood won’t let her forget everything he’s done or let her move on with her new life, well everyone except Eddie Landry the single dad contractor who treats her like she’s precious and amazing.

Seriously I loved Eddie, he was determined to show Kiki how he felt and not once did he ever believe the rumors that were circulating through Sparkwood. And his kid, Theo was adorable.

I will definitely be going back and reading the other Sparkwood books.

Sheltering Sparks by M.L. Broome absolutely wrecked me in the best possible way. This book is so emotional that your heart will break, then it’s patched up with a bit of joyous humor and tenderness, only to be ripped open all over again. It’s one of those romances that digs deep into your heart and refuses to let go.

Eddie Landry is the kind of hero you can’t help but fall for instantly. A devoted single dad to six-year-old Theo, he’s patient, protective, and strong, but also tender and loving when it matters most. What truly made me love him was how he saw Kiki when no one else in Sparkwood would. While the entire town treats her like an outcast because of her ex-husband’s arrest for sex trafficking, Eddie refuses to judge her for someone else’s crimes. Watching him stand by her, especially when people close to him join in the cruelty, made this story impossible to put down. And I’m not just saying that. I had ten other things I should have been doing, but I sat down and finished the last 90 minutes of the book because I HAD to know how it ended! Was I disappointed? No. Was my heart ripped out of my chest, stomped on, and then shoved back in with the precision of a T-Rex? Yes. Absolutely that. And I can’t wait to do it all over again with the next book in this series!

Kiki was at fault for breaking my heart on more than one occasion. The way she constantly makes herself smaller to survive the whispers, accusations, and cruelty from the people who used to be her friends was painfully realistic. She apologizes for existing, tries not to take up space, and accepts treatment no one should ever endure. Until Eddie comes along, steadily and lovingly reminding her that she deserves to be herself all the time because she didn’t commit any crimes. Every time he encouraged her to speak up, laugh loudly, or exist without shame, you could sense Kiki taking her power back a little at a time, even if it was one step forward and two steps back sometimes. All I could think was that we all deserve someone who looks at us the way Eddie looks at Kiki.
This reverse-age-gap romance delivers so much more than chemistry, though the chemistry is incredible and will certainly steam up your Kindle. The emotional intimacy Ms. Broome builds between them is what truly stands out. Even in the messiest moments, when everything feels ugly, hopeless, and stacked against them, you can still feel the deep love they have for each other pouring off the page. That love becomes the safe place both of them desperately need as their mutual job progresses and more and more people come between them.

And Theo? Completely precious. He added warmth and heart to a story that already carried so much emotional depth. Whenever he was on page, you couldn’t help but smile because he was so enthusiastic about life and paschetti (IYKYK).

This book will make you angry at the town, heartbroken for Kiki, protective of Eddie and Theo, and hopeful that love really can survive even the cruelest and messiest of circumstances. Sheltering Sparks is beautifully written, emotionally intense, and completely unforgettable. I’ve already found my favorite read of 2026, and I have Ms. Broome to thank for taking me back to a town filled with good friends and introducing me to a few more who deserve everything good life has to offer them.

Sheltering Sparks was such an emotional small-town romance about healing, judgment, safety, and learning how to stop shrinking yourself after life tears everything apart.

This book genuinely broke my heart at times while also slowly putting it back together with tenderness, warmth, and hope.

Katherine “Kiki” was such an emotional character to follow because her entire life completely collapses after her husband is arrested for sex trafficking. Overnight, the woman who once felt accepted by her small town becomes isolated, judged, and treated like she should somehow carry responsibility for crimes she never even knew were happening.

And honestly, one of the most painful parts of the story was watching how deeply the town refused to separate Kiki from her husband’s actions.

The rumors.

The whispers.

The accusations.

The judgment.

It all slowly pushes her into making herself smaller just to survive.

That part hit especially hard for me because once you start shrinking yourself to avoid conflict, attention, or criticism, it becomes incredibly difficult to stop doing it. And I really appreciated that the story didn’t magically “fix” Kiki overnight. Her healing felt gradual, emotional, and realistic.

Then there’s Eddie.

And honestly? Eddie was exactly the kind of MMC Kiki needed.

While the entire town focused on gossip and assumptions, Eddie simply saw her.

Not the headlines.

Not the rumors.

Not the woman connected to a monster.

Just Kiki.

He treated her with kindness, patience, warmth, and genuine care from the beginning, and I loved that he never let the opinions of others impact how he viewed her.

The relationship between them felt incredibly comforting because Eddie constantly reminded Kiki—through both words and actions—that she was worthy of love, safety, and happiness despite everything she had endured.

Theo also completely stole my heart.

Eddie’s six-year-old son added so much warmth and lightness to the story, especially during some of the heavier emotional moments. The family dynamic between the three of them developed beautifully and made the healing aspects of the story even stronger.

This wasn’t just a romance.

It was a story about reclaiming yourself after shame, betrayal, and public judgment try to take away your sense of identity.

And while the book absolutely hurts emotionally at times, it also offers so much tenderness, hope, and healing throughout the journey.

I really like reverse age gap romances, so I decided to pick this one up. I’m sorry to say it just didn’t appeal to me. The blurb made it seem like a sweet and steamy story about a single dad and his son wooing a woman who’s had a rough time of things lately. Instead it was a book filled with threats and betrayals and ultimatums and blackmail.

Kiki is persona non grata in her hometown after her husband was arrested for human trafficking. I found it hard to believe that the entire town would turn against her, especially since her family had been there for generations and she must have had her own reputation she’d made, and friends willing to stand up for her. Nonetheless, Eddie, the handsome single father, seems to be one of the only people who cares about her.

But this isn’t just a tale of two people facing down the town haters. The author also decided to add an ex who decides to blackmail Kiki. And if you’re thinking that ex is her former criminal husband, nope. It’s Eddie’s ex, threatening to take custody of his son from him if Kiki doesn’t get lost. Of course Kiki’s ex *does* get his two cents in, threatening her and demanding she lie for him.

As if that isn’t enough, we also have Eddie and Kiki working together for a big time Hollywood director. Why was that added to the story? Who knows. But Kiki is jealous of the assistant, Eddie is jealous of the director. They make love, they break up, they fight, they make up. On and on, over and again.

And through all of it I just kept thinking, “Sit down and talk to one another, for goodness sake!” I don’t mind misunderstandings, but these characters are supposed to be adults. Neither one is mature enough to deal with the situation logically?

And through it all, the author keeps telling us what a vivacious, strong woman Kiki once was, yet we see absolutely no evidence of it. Instead she’s a victim throughout the whole book.

I really tried to like this one. The author’s writing style isn’t bad, at least. But that’s about the only positive thing I can say. If you’re looking for overdone angst, drama for the sake of it, and a very long slog to the HEA, you might enjoy this one. Otherwise, I’d recommend you find something else to spend your time with.

After her husbands bad deeds caught up to him and their lives imploded Kiki decided it best to keep her distance from folks in town. Most don't believe that she wasn't aware of what her husband was doing and they feel like she no longer belongs in their town...and often tell her so too. But there's one person who doesn't feel that way, and he'll go to great lengths to make sure she knows it too! It's an unexpected friendship that she didn't know quite how much she needed it until she had it...

Between the pages of this emotionally rich love story you will meet two people who have been let down by love in the past and have their reservations about giving it a second chance. But once they start spending time with one another they start to wonder if maybe this time would be different. There are many obstacles in their way, but ignoring the sparks bouncing around between them is downright impossible. What they have is special and Eddie wants to hold on to it in whatever capacity he can, but Kiki doesn't want the bad parts of her life touching Eddie and his young sons lives, it would cause them unnecessary pain and drama. But letting go of them seems pretty impossible now too... it's a difficult decision she doesn't want to make.

This first time read came with an powerful emotional punch, I was swimming in feels the whole way through! This was such a beautifully written love story, one that came with everything necessary to keep me captivated and flying through the pages for what I hoped to be a very happy and well deserved happy ever after for all...and I have to say was not disappointed when that last page came. Oh my heart! If you like slow burn romances than you have to take a chance on this one... it's words will torture your heart in all the best of ways! Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

Thank you to M.L. Broome and Luna Literary Management for the opportunity to read this wonderful story.

Kiki Wilder's first marriage ended in utter disaster, and now she is the town outcast because of her soon-to-be ex-husband's criminal past. She wants nothing but to be able to live her life and not be judged by his actions, but she feels like she's either despised or invisible. At least to everyone but Eddie Landry. This single dad falls head over heels for her and vows to protect her from her past. However, both of their pasts come calling and drive them to the brink. Will they survive being forced together to complete a renovation project or will they destroy each other in the process.

Can I just say, my heart can't take it. The way Eddie crashed through all of Kiki's walls to bring her back to herself. That man is book husband material for sure. He was in her corner when no one else was…even when she broke his heart. Oh Kiki. Can I just wrap her in love and never let her go? The ups and downs of this story had me on a razor’s edge. I could not put this down and had to find out what was next.

Tropes:
Small Town Romance
Single Dad
Lovers to Enemies to "what the hell are we doing?"
Forced Proximity

"“I just miss the version of me you brought out. I really miss her.”

That’s the trouble with loving someone. It doesn’t matter if they deserve your love. You give it anyway. Love makes fools of us all,

“Keep dreaming, sweetheart. I’ll keep proving I’m better than anything your imagination could come up with.”

“Beautiful, I don’t give two craps about the wrapping paper,”“I just want the present.”

4.25/5...This leans hard into emotional angst, and it works. The premise immediately hooks you with that fall-from-grace arc—going from “darling of the town” to social exile is such a sharp, painful shift, and the “monster’s wife” label adds a layer of stigma that feels heavy and believable. There’s a strong undercurrent of loneliness and quiet endurance here that gives the romance real weight. Eddie’s role hits all the right notes for this kind of story: younger, grounded, a single dad, and—most importantly—someone who sees her as a person instead of a headline. That contrast between how the town defines her and how he treats her is where the emotional payoff lives. The age gap and small-town setting add texture without feeling like gimmicks. The “I have to leave to keep you safe” trope can sometimes feel overused, but here it fits naturally with the threat of her past resurfacing. this promises a slower-burn, character-driven romance with a strong emphasis on healing, trust, and reclaiming identity after public shame. The emotional stakes feel intimate but high, especially with a child involved, and it’s clearly aiming for that bittersweet, gut-punch kind of love story. An interesting read, my first book by M.L. Broome. I started it and read about 4 or 5 chapters. Set the book down. When I picked the book back up a couple of days later, I had to start again because nothing stuck. The second read was easier than the first, Kiki’s story was not something I could relate to, but at the same time I could not stop reading.

Kiki has done nothing wrong, but choose the wrong man to spend her life with. After his illegal activity is exposed, she is shunned by her small town. May could not believe she did not know. But not all believe she is guilty, and Eddie starts to spend time with Kiki. She feels she is not good enough for him and his son. She will put them in danger.

Almost boarding on women’s fiction, but this is a romance. Kiki begins to believe she is good enough, and the slow burn between her and Eddie begins to evolve. His strength and trust peels back her layers as she heals and trusts. The emotional draw stayed with me from the first chapter, and the love story was worth sticking with the story.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

Sparkwood: Scenes from a Small Town #4 – Sheltering Sparks by M.L. Broome is an emotionally rich, slow-burn romance about shame, second chances, and finding love when the whole town thinks you don’t deserve it.
Kiki used to be Sparkwood’s golden girl—until her husband’s crimes turned her into “the monster’s wife.” The fall from grace is sharp and painful, and the isolation she faces feels heartbreakingly real. Enter Eddie Landry: younger, steady, a devoted single dad, and the one man who sees her instead of the headlines. Their unexpected friendship quietly builds into something tender and powerful, filled with sparks neither of them can ignore.
The emotional angst runs deep, and it works. The contrast between the town’s judgment and Eddie’s unwavering kindness gives this story its heart. I loved the healing arc and the way trust slowly blooms between them. At times, the pacing leans heavily into the internal struggle, but the payoff is worth it—especially with the protective, “I’ll walk away to save you” tension woven in.
If you love small-town romances with depth, redemption, and a beautifully earned HEA, this one will absolutely tug at your heart.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy.

Kiki’s ex‑husband, Drake—the former Chief of Police—left a trail of damage behind him, and some folks in the small town of Sparkwood still believe Kiki must have known what he was doing. My heart ached for her. You can feel the weight of the emotional and verbal abuse she endured, not just from Drake but from the small‑minded people around her who should’ve shown compassion instead of judgment.

Eddie, a single father to adorable little Theo and nearly ten years younger than Kiki, is a genuinely good man who never holds her past against her. I loved how he stood up to the bullies and shut down the gossip. Eddie and Theo have become such an important part of Kiki’s life, offering her the kind of steady, honest support she’s never had.

But with the town whispering, her past still haunting her, and Eddie’s ex, Deirdre, stirring up trouble, will Kiki let fear push them away—or finally choose the happiness she deserves?.

Sheltering Sparks by M.L. Broome is small-town romance with bruised hearts, quiet yearning, and the kind of emotional tension that simmers before it ever catches fire.

Kiki’s story has that ache I love in a heroine — the woman who has been through far too much, has learned how to hold herself together in public, and is still trying to believe she deserves softness again. And Eddie? He brings the shelter. The steadiness. The “I see you even when you’re trying to disappear” energy.

This is a slow-burn, emotionally tender romance with forced proximity, workplace tension, and a small-town setting that gives the story that cozy-but-complicated feel. It is not just about sparks flying. It is about safety. Trust. Healing. Being wanted after feeling judged, broken, or too much.

The romance feels intimate in that quiet, almost devastating way — less flashy firework, more hand-over-heart warmth. M.L. Broome gives us two people learning that love does not always arrive loud. Sometimes it shows up steady, patient, and unwilling to let you stand alone.

So emotional and so beautiful!
Such a beautiful story with amazing characters, a delight to read.
Life for Kiki has changed dramatically since her husband’s downfall.
Shunned by most in her small town she is the shell of the woman she used to be, with only a select few people sticking by her.
Until she gets to know and spend time with Eddie who is almost 10 years younger than her and his gorgeous 6 year old boy Theo.
Can anything come of the attraction they both feel for each other?
With all the obstacles that face them will Kiki step away fearing that she will cause problems in Eddie and Theo’s lives?
Plenty of fun times, lots of emotions and feelings that can’t be denied.
I happily devoured this story loving every minute of it.
Thank you to ML Broome and Luna Literary for the opportunity to read this gorgeous story.

Makes you cry, laugh and blush

Sheltering Sparks is the fourth book in the Sparkwood: Scenes From A Small Town series by M.L. Broome. I have read several books by this author over the years and the first book in the Sparkwood series. I have enjoyed each book because they are well written, have interesting characters, a solid story-line that you usually can identify with somehow, and a nice amount of hot and steamy chemistry. This story breaks your heart and then puts the pieces back together. Kiki and Eddie make an interesting couple, as there is reverse age-gap, social outcast and scorned woman, single dad, small town gossip, angst, and of course some smexy passion all mixed together. I really loved this book and would definitely RECOMMEND it to other readers....just make sure you bring a box of tissue to the party.

This was a book where I had no clue what to expect and no expectations. And it blew me away. For the first quarter I figured this was going to be a sweet romance where the couple were together and we got to see their lives. Well I was wrong because it got all emotional and angsty which is pure catnip for me.
Poor Kiki had to put up with so much anger and hatred through no fault of her own, I thought the townspeople were a**holes, especially when they’ve known her forever. Eddie was the bright spot in her life, oh and Theo. My heart hurt for her.
Eddie was amazing. I loved the dynamic between he and Kiki. Even more once they started working together. All that tension and longing. Fabulous.
I will be looking out for this author in the future. I love it when a book makes me feel all the things.

Reverse age-gap
This was so full of emotion, with heartbreak, betrayal, struggling acceptance, newfound happiness and doubt all mixed into the wonderful story - it’s a real emotional roller coaster.
Kiki and Eddie’s story is a reverse age-gap between a single dad with a cute little boy and the town pariah because of her husband’s misdeeds.
It’s a slow burn, but their connection is undeniable and I loved watching Kiki come alive again under Eddie’s sweet care.
There’s healing, rebuilt trust, sweetness, kindness, spice, banter, angst and drama, all woven expertly together to make a beautiful and engaging story.

Sheltering Sparks is the 4th book in the Sparkwood series, but can easily be read as a standalone. It's a deeply emotional story which reveals the truly ugly side of small-town life - gossip and worse. Eddie is a ray of sunshine in Kiki's otherwise bleak existence and it's great to see how he coaxes her out of her shell. Theo, Eddie's charming son, is a great addition and he adds a whole other dimension. I was invested in their happiness from the first to the last page and so happy to see them get the HEA they deserve. I received an early copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kiki is dealt a devastating blow when her husband is incarcerated, and she is deemed guilty by association, by the majority of the town, regardless of her reputation prior to her marriage.

Eddie, a single dad, is the only one in town who believes in her innocence. They form a fragile relationship but of course it can't be easy. Both Eddie's ex, Kiki's ex, and others cause Kiki to doubt the strength of their relationship and if she would cause Eddie and Theo to be in danger.

This story is about trust, healing, reclaimed self-esteem, and a love strong enough to overcome all obstacles.

I have read a couple of the books in this series, this one where two people who have been let down my loved ones in the past find their way to each other. Katherine (Kiki) and Eddie have a great connection.

Eddie was one of a kind. While the town held her responsible for something her husband did, Eddie saw her for who she was. Kiki doesn’t want the parts of her last to touch him or his son.

The emotions were beautifully written and the obstacles they have to overcome had me cheering them on to get their HEA.

Like the other books in the series there is angst and many emotions throughout the book. I loved Eddie already, so Kiki just added to that love with Theo.

Eddie helping Kiki get past the shame that followed her because of her ex was just— ughh I love him. It’s a sweet love story between not just Eddie and Kiki, but Eddie’s little boy Theo.

After reading this one I feel the need to go back an reread to fall in love with everyone all over again.

I feel like this was some typical small town treatment towards Kiki. Her husband did something completely disgusting but somehow she’s the one they shun, even though he’s been out away. So I was happy to see that Eddie didn’t see it that way. And even though he was younger than her, he was there for her. A single dad with an amazing son. I loved the way these two clicked. But then there’s the twist, and she leaves. This was emotional and tense. I loved these two so much. I fell in love with this story.

The story has a lot of interesting elements,
broken marriage by man action, sex trafficker,
a woman who is totally damaged and single dad who will prove her worth.
Definitely recommend this book and personally would read rest of the series.

I love Broome's writing. It always manages to elicit emotions. Kiki's and Eddie's relationship is a rollercoaster to say the least but I was all in for the ride from the get go. I cared deeply about the characters and I loved seeing Ori and Ash a few times, too.

This is a story about protecting the ones you love no matter the cost of it to yourself. It is also a story about love being stronger than any obsticles life May throw your way.

This book had me in the feels all the way through. Very few books have ever had me crying. This was one of them. I can’t wait for the next books in this series. I didn’t think anything could top the first few…but I think Kiki’s redemption story did. She never deserved all the hate from the townsfolk. She only ever deserved the love Eddie showed her.

The author has given us an older woman/younger man story that pulls us into the lives of Katherine/Kiki, Eddie and his son, Theo. The heartwarming story keeps us turning the pages with connection, acceptance, threats, betrayal, heartbreak, determination and fears.

Oh gosh, my heart ached for Kiki. She doesn’t deserve all the hatred spewed against her. I cried so many tears for her as I journeyed with her on her ups and downs in this book.

I truly enjoyed seeing her smile again, with Eddie at her side. I also enjoyed their scenes with cute Theo. And that ending, was the perfect one for their cozy family.
