Christmas Dukes #2

The Duke Who Ruined Christmas

Rate this book
USA Today bestselling author Scarlett Scott returns to her beloved Christmas Dukes series with a new holiday romance about a frigid, proper duke and the wayward American heiress who melts his ice with her irresistible fire...

If there’s one thing American heiress Adelia Fox knows, it’s that the haughty and arrogant Duke of Marchingham is a heartless monster. Why else would he refuse to allow his sisters to pay her a visit in New York City during the Christmas season for the third year in a row? Fortunately, Addy’s arrived at a clever solution. If her friends can’t come to her, she will simply go to them.

Lionel Hawthorne, the Duke of Marchingham, is doing everything in his power to keep his failing estates running and to see his wayward sisters settled down with proper husbands. The last thing he needs is for Letty and Lila to go gallivanting to New York City. There’s no telling what manner of mischief a notorious hoyden like the dreadful Miss Fox would land them in. His refusal of their request is as necessary as it is practical. Instead, he sends them off to his aunt and uncle whilst he remains in Yorkshire.

Addy arrives in the midst of a snowstorm to find that her dearest friends are not at Marchingham Hall as she had supposed. Instead, only their tyrant of a brother is in residence. The rapidly accumulating snow means she’s trapped with the icy and disapproving duke in a threadbare manor house that is bereft of even the tiniest hint of Yuletide. To make matters worse, the duke is maddeningly handsome…when he’s not glowering at her, that is.

Lion can’t believe his misfortune. Bad enough that he’s had to endure Miss Fox’s dubious influence upon his sisters from afar. Now, he’s snowed in with the hellion. The wretched chit is every bit as outrageous and improper as he imagined. So why can’t he stop thinking about what it would be like to take her in his arms and tame that willful mouth with a kiss?

Heat Scorching hot! Don't say you weren't warned.

The Duke Who Ruined Christmas is a holiday, grumpy x sunshine, best friend’s brother, historical romance novella! He’s a cold and grumpy Duke and she’s the American heiress he falls for!

Addy is determined to see her two best friends this Christmas. The 3 had loads of fun while in boarding school together in Switzerland and want to spend time back together again. But her friends’s frustrating older brother has refused to let them visit her in America so Addy hops on a ship and sets sail for England to surprise them! Instead she is the one surprised when she shows up during a snowstorm and it’s only Lion, the Duke of Marchingham home and not his sisters.

Addy and Lion get off to a rough start, he’s very much a starchy cold and grumpy hero who thinks she should keep her dog in the stables and out of the house. But she (and her dog) quickly start to thaw his frozen heart. This was quick and fun, he’s definitely a grump at the start and kinda rude, but he quickly falls for her which was fun. There was a little misunderstanding at the end but it lead to some grand declarations when they do get back together. All in all a fun one, I loved the first one in this holidays series last year a bit more (The Duke Who Despised Christmas).

Boring!

A outspoken American heiress finds herself stuck in a snowstorm with a haughty, proper Duke. Nothing wrong with that type of enemies to lovers set up, and nothing wrong with reading a trope I’ve seen before, but the author does nothing new or interesting here with this set up.

Those of you saying in your reviews that this is the best Christmas story I beg you to read “A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrong” by Cecilia Grant. You deserve better!

Mild spoilers ahead,

An example of how uninteresting these characters are, is that the final climax of the book results from a miscommunication, which is fine the miscommunication trope gets a bad rap, but when it’s done, well especially in a romance novel, it can be very beautiful and humanizing - part of falling in love with somebody is learning how to communicate with them, so it makes sense that miscommunication would happen and be a source of conflict.

However, books like this are why miscommunication gets a bad rap because the trope is utilized in such a lazy uninteresting way via the heroine over hearing a conversation between the hero and his aunt that is misleading. And instead of waiting to hear the entire conversation or talking to him about it, she just leaves and runs away. These characters were not interesting enough for the author to come up with a real reason for a third act conflict so the result is eavesdropping, lazy and boring!

4.25-4.5 stars!

This story was like homemade mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving. Warm, fluffy and left me fully satisfied. I do love a brooding Duke who falls for a headstrong heroine and her dog. This was literally perfect!

Cute but ordinary

I loved Dandy the dog and his happy bouts of joy. His love of cheese, and everything.about him. I also liked the other lesser characters too. Lol. It was very readable and actually quite sweet but it wasn't extraordinary! I didn't get the feels (except for Dandy) like I normally.do after a Scarlett Scott read but I still liked it.very much. Addy was quite the character. I liked her sass and confidence. They deserved each other.

Cute Chrissy novella with a hoyden American h (and her cute little French bulldog Dandelion) and an icy British duke. He blames her for getting his little sisters kicked out of their French boarding school (they are all besties). She melts his heart with stolen kisses, Christmas carols and snowball fights. ❤️

Side note but not really sure what this authors obsession is with Axminster rugs she seems to mention them frequently in her books

Started off well enough, but I’m afraid I wasn’t all that engrossed in the story, and even worse, I didn’t really care for the heroine. She was presumptuous and annoying for most of the book! I liked the first novella in this series much better.

Audio Notes: I adored the two previous audiobook narrations I’ve listened to by Ashford McNab, but I didn’t really like her narration here. Her performance was frequently overly exaggerated or overwrought, and her American accents grated, which isn’t great in helping to endear the heroine to us.

What a fun Christmas romance! I loved reading this book, Addy is truly an outgoing lady with a beautiful little dog, Dandy! Miss.Adelia Fox is an American heiress who makes the trip from America to visit her two English friends. Unfortunately as Addy travels to the estate there a snowstorm, she sends her Aunt and dog ahead. Lion the Duke of Marchingham is a very handsome blond and and blue eyed tyrant.
As the wonderful and funny storyline progresses so much happens! They become attracted to each other, but I really liked the names Addy would give the Duke! There is a witty incident with Dandy and the Duke giving her pocket cheese!
This is such a well written book with great characters and of course a happily ever after!

I love a Christmas story!
Addy was such a headstrong American hoyden that loved nothing more than to annoy Lion, the Duke of Marchingham . That is until she loved his kisses and then fell in love with him.
Lionel Hawthorne, the Duke of Marchingham, preferred solitude and no celebration of Christmas. He was definitely not happy when he had to rescue Miss Adelia Fox from a snowstorm. His sisters' best friend and his uninvited guest and her dog, Dandy, annoyed him at first until he decided two could play her game. While arguing they developed a friendship and respect for one another .
This was a quick read with well-written characters and quite a bit of humor. I look forward to the next book in this series.

This was an absolute delight two people who clash at every meeting, a charming Aunt acting as chaperone & Dandy, one adorable dog. I loved everything about this book & devoured it in a sitting. I loved Lion & Addy the chemistry between them sizzled & their feelings melted in time with the snow & once they kiss their feelings change. There are misconceptions & also eavesdroppers never hear anything good. Dandy adds humour & Lion falls for her too. A wonderful seasonal romance

So of course I had to dive into Christmas Dukes #2: The Duke Who Ruined Christmas—because once you survive Book 1, it becomes a festive obligation at this point, right? 🎅😂

And honestly? This one felt like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket… that’s maybe missing a button. Cute, sweet, simple—one of those books you breeze through with a soft smile but don’t necessarily clutch to your chest afterward.

But let’s talk about the real star: Dandy the dog.
Umm, excuse me?! His cheese addiction? His chaotic joy? His tail-wagging happiness? Peak Christmas spirit. 🎁🐶

The whole book had that classic Christmas twinkle—light, comforting, a little predictable—but not in a bad way. Just… nice.

So yeah, I didn’t hate it. I didn’t love-love it. It was just… an okay snowy stroll through the holiday season—with Dandy stealing the spotlight and all the snacks.

A Duke, an American Heiress and a dog named Dandy! What a wonderful and very memorable Christmas story!! Spicy, steamy, snowstorm and sisters’ best friend (oh how I love that trope) mixed with banter and shenanigans just pulled me in and I could NOT put this book down and lost sleep to finish it but what a joyous finish!
I feel like I may be reading this again very, very soon because I just fell in love with the characters and plot line and it’s Christmas so you can’t go wrong!

Scarlett Scott is the best, and this is the best Christmas story of the season! One can’t help but fall in love with Addy and Lion and the precious little French bull dog that steals the show. Addy is the outspoken and brazen American who travels to England to surprise her former schoolmates only to surprise their proper, surly brother, the Duke of Marchingham, instead, as the girls are away for the holidays. This unlikely couple go from sparing enemies to passionate lovers by the time Christmas arrives. Don’t miss this one. It’s pure delight!!

I loved Lion and Addy's story - what a fun start to the holidays! Lion is so gruff and searched, in comparison to Addy's outgoing and exuberant nature. They're such opposites, but their happily ever after was a foregone conclusion from the moment they met - i loved how much they challenged each other, and how they brought out the best in each other! I couldn't put the book down and finished it in one sitting! A fantastic holiday novella!

This is my 81st book by Scarlett Scott. She is definitely one of my top favorite authors. I have been reading her since 2016. I love her stories and her writing and she writes such damn good, yummy, hot sex scenes. I know I will always get a good read from her.

I loved this story. I loved Adelia and Lionel. What a feisty couple they were. I loved their back and forth. Sex was, as always, well written. Great overall read.

✨An annoying, bratty heroine, a dog as a plot device, and a Duke who needs to get laid…elsewhere.✨

The heroine is an arrogant twat. She showed up uninvited, brought several people and a dog with her, and had no qualms speaking to Lion disrespectfully in his home and refused to respect his rules.
The disrespect and dog nonsense goes on and on, they kiss a few times and have a few boring “moments,” and then—bam!—they’re banging and she’s in love.

Wtf?🫩🤔
Atrocious pacing.

Also, the dog bit was so damn annoying. At almost 30% little happened that didn’t involve it.

If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas with a side of enemies-to-lovers heat and a French bulldog, who deserves her own novella, look no further than The Duke That Ruined Christmas. Spoiler: He didn’t ruin it - he just made it wildly inappropriate for polite society.

When Adelia Fox made her surprise arrival in England expecting festive cheer and her two best friends' happy faces; she is very disappointed when she is informed, they had gone to relatives for the holidays. Instead, she gets snowed in with their icy, disapproving brother, Lionel Hawthorne, a brooding duke whose idea of holiday spirit is not decking the halls but emotionally decking his houseguest. He’s grumpy. She’s spicy. He's dark, She's light. Together, they’re one snowball fight away from scandal.

The banter is positively wicked. The chemistry is melt-your-mistletoe hot. The manor is crumbling, cold, and utterly perfect for forced proximity shenanigans. Add in a meddling Aunt with matchmaking tendencies and Dandy, the Frenchie with more emotional intelligence than the hero and you’ve got a holiday romance that’s equal parts hilarious and heart-melting.

Scarlett Scott delivers a deliciously sharp tale where misunderstandings abound, eavesdropping leads to chaos, and even the frostiest duke can’t resist a woman with fire in her eyes and a bulldog in her lap. I devoured this in one sitting and regret nothing except not rationing it like Christmas cookies. Lion and Addy are the kind of couple who argue like it’s foreplay and kiss like it is war. Their HEA is earned, spicy, and wrapped in velvet ribbon with a bow that says, “Do Not Open Until You’re Ready to Swoon.” I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Absolutely loved Lion and Addy's passionate, romantic story of two opposites hopelessly attracted to each other, even if Lion thinks his sister's best friend is a bad influence on them. Lion is drowning in debt and needs to marry an heiress or sell of more of his estate to repair his beloved home to withstand another English winter. Addy is a brash American heiress whose vast dowry is what attracts her suitors to her side. Addy wants a man who will love her for her and not her dowry. Lion is a dour, arrogant, self important Duke who dislikes everything about Addy even before he meets her. Lion rescues Addy from a snowstorm and brings her to his rundown mansion only to discover that her dearest friends are away visiting their aunt and uncle. Soon their close confines and encounters draw sparks of attraction, can Lion overcome his dislike of Addy and the Ton's view of him as a fortune hunters should he reveal the depths of his feelings for one of the most beautiful and wealthy women he has ever met.

Characters: Lion, The Duke of Marchingham and Miss Adelia Fox

Trope: snowed in, opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine

Miss Adelia Fox (Addy) is an heiress to a railroad magnate that lives in New York City, so she decides to pay her friends she met at school a visit for Christmas, she goes to their estate and realizes that her friends are with their aunt and uncle. So she ends up getting stuck with their grumpy brother during a snowstorm. She is also there with her aunt and Adelia’s dog named Dandelion (Dandy for short). While she is there she melts The Dukes icy facade.

Lion, The Duke of Marchingham just wants to be alone for Christmas, because he enjoys his solitude, plus he doesn’t have the funds to entertain guests, but the more time he spends with Addy and her dog, the more he becomes charmed with her antics.

*I did enjoy this story, I will say I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the previous novel. There were times I did get a little irritated with Addy, but other than that I still enjoyed the story *.

A wonderful short and sweet holiday treat. Lionel Hawthorne, the Duke of Marchingham is the older brother to Letty and Lila. They are the best friends of Adelia Fox, an American heiress they met at boarding school. Adelia desperately wants to see them but the duke refuses to let them visit over the Christmas holidays. She comes up with a plan to surprise them with a visit of her own to the Duke's estate. Little did she know they would not be at home and Adelia would be snowed in with the arrogant Duke. She did have her Aunt and her French bulldog, Dandy with her. Lionel and Adelia have misconceptions of each other and the more time they spend together the more attracted they are to one another. Can they overcome their differences to find their HEA? Dandy adds a bit of humor to the story also. You will absolutely love this holiday story!! I received an ARC of this book and is my honest review.

Oil and water. Night and day. Chalk and cheese. Those are just some of the ways you can describe Adelia Fox, an American heiress from New York City, and Lionel Hawthorne, the Duke of Marchingham.

Addy is a wild child. She is impetuous, bold, and adventurous. The Duke of Marchingham is on the opposite end of the spectrum. He is staid, rigid, and laser-focused on trying to revive Marchingham Hall. Arriving uninvited to the ducal estate in the middle of a snowstorm, Addy barges into Lion’s carefully ordered life and promptly blows it apart.

Addy and Lion dance around each other for days until the dam breaks, and they finally lose control during a passionate piano scene. While snowed in at the estate, both Addy and her adorable French bulldog Dandy slowly melt Lion’s heart.

This is another fun and steamy gem from Scarlett Scott. I read this book as an advanced reader copy.
