Never Settle
By: Dani Grimes

“Give me an hour and I’ll give your vibrator a run for its money.”

“I was falling for Sophia. Not slowly. Not just a little bit. I was crashing to the ground at the speed of a meteor for this girl and I had zero interest in stopping myself from hitting the ground. She had just enough spunk to keep things interesting while also being one of the kindest people I’d ever met. She was funny and caring, adventurous and smart. I couldn’t think of a single thing I could ever want in a woman that she didn’t possess.”

“My eye found Leo, the guy who knew how I liked my coffee, cared for me after the worst night of my life, and kept telling me t me I. His own casual way how important I was to him.”

I am absolutely obsessed! I went into Leo and Sophia’s story completely blind, and it did not disappoint! Leo is the captain of his college hockey team with a career going pro waiting for him. Sophia is an aspiring writer that gets tasked with interviewing Leo for the school
paper. Their story is one of lust, angst, longing and so much love. There story hurts so good and puts you back together at the end and I loved every second of it! I couldn’t but this book down!

4.5 rounded up.

Playboy and hockey captain Leo is focused on keeping his skills up, winning the Final Four, and starting with the Bruins when he graduates. Sophia is focused on getting her degree before moving on to write romance novels like her father. Unfortunately her agent has pointed out that her steamy scenes are clinical at best, and she needs to find inspiration somewhere. Sophia decides to throw caution to the wind and ask the local hockey captain to help her see what passion feels like so she can finally hone her craft. Now they just have to focus on not catching feelings before graduation, knowing that eventually they'll be over 5000 miles apart.

*****

This was such an unexpectedly sweet (and still steamy) novel. I normally shy away from romances that push towards 500 pages in length, as they can get repetitive or drag out unnecessarily. This was the complete opposite. I was hooked from page 1 and felt like the story flew by as they slowly fell for each other, while not seeing what was right in front of them.

Leo fell hard and thoroughly for Soph. He was open to taking whatever he could get, and completely changed his playboy ways - which was adorable. Sophie learned how to have confidence in herself, and developed a found family amongst her friends and Leo's family that rivalled her own back home which was the perfect tie-in to this book. Instead of there being an overt amount of drama or issues with friends or parents, this was truly a book where two people loved each other, their families and their friends, while tackling issues together as they arose.

This can be read as a standalone, but since it is the next generation to two previous book series I would probably read them first as those characters are their parents, and their pasts are referenced regularly throughout the book. Either way, this was a great story, had beautiful character development, and a level of emotional intelligence that I wasn't expecting but was delighted to find.

After reading Never Settle, I am a Dani Grimes fan for life. I found all the characters endearing and hilarious with depth that will have you invested. Sophia is tasked with interviewing the school’s hotshot hockey star, Leo, for the school newspaper. Sophia is an aspiring romance author, she joined the newspaper to diverse her writing skills. Leo is known as a playboy that has slept with half the female students . When Sophia meets Leo she is surprised to find a genuinely nice guy. Leo is struck by her beauty, intelligence and humor. He finds himself wanting to see her again, a feeling he’s never had before. Sophia goes to Leo and proposes a scheduled one night stand to help her write the spicy scenes for her book. The day after thier epic night together, Leo finds out Sophia is assigned to cover the hockey team for the season. He takes this opportunity to establish a friends with benefits relationship so he can keep seeing her. I loved how awkward Sophia was in social situations and how she approached things. Leo is genuine and a big flirt in the best way. I enjoyed reading her articles interspersed between the chapters. A favorite of mine was the ‘Zamboni moment.’ This book is spicy, they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. The bus scene…HOT! Then, Leo went feral for Sophia when she wore a jersey with his name and number on it. I loved this book and was fully invested in seeing how these two would work things out after graduation. I’m not the biggest fan of a third act break up, but Sophia and Leo are young and they couldn’t see a way to be together without resenting each other later. He can’t ask her to be away from her family and she can’t ask him to quit hockey. It takes a break up, two miserable weeks alone, and their crazy families to show them they have more options. I loved the reunion, peak romcom moment.

Never Settle is a thoughtful and emotionally rich romance that explores the crossroads between love and ambition. This story hurt in the best possible way. It’s raw. It’s tender. It’s full of longing and healing and everything in between.

The character development is a standout feature. Leo isn’t just the stereotypical jock, he is vulnerable and introspective beneath his confident exterior. Sophia’s strength lies in her sense of self and unwillingness to compromise on what matters most to her. Their chemistry is electric, but it’s the emotional connection that makes their romance believable and compelling. Dani Grimes expertly balances light-hearted flirtation with poignant moments, crafting a story that resonates beyond the typical tropes of the genre.

The writing is crisp and emotionally intelligent, alternating perspectives between Leo and Sophia to give readers a deeper understanding of their internal struggles. The hockey setting adds an exciting dynamic, but it never overshadows the emotional core of the story. Dani Grimes's portrayal of long-distance dilemmas, ambition, and personal sacrifice elevates the novel, offering more than just a steamy romance.

Watching them slowly fall for each other, while being totally blind to what was happening, was honestly adorable. It gave me all the warm, fuzzy feels.

I was completely blown away by the emotional depth and vulnerability threaded through every chapter, this wasn’t just a love story, it was an experience that left a mark on me.

It depicts how true love is possible, but sometimes out of reach, how compromise is always important, how family matters and help in the worst moments, how personal sacrifice isn’t much of a struggle when you truly love someone and how heartfelt can a love story be.

Both Leo and Sophia are super close with their families which added a lot of depth.

What sets their story apart is the profound love and respect they hold for one another. It’s not just physical, though their chemistry is explosive and undeniable, it’s emotional, spiritual even. They bare themselves to each other in ways that are breathtakingly honest. There’s no room for games or pretense here, only raw truth and aching vulnerability.

Their love is selfless. Their pain, visceral. And as a reader, I didn’t just witness it, I felt it. Their heartache became my heartache. Their sorrow seeped through the pages and broke me open. I can’t remember the last time I cried like this, real, unstoppable tears streaming down my face, and my breath caught somewhere between heartache and awe.

Despite having four parents whose love stories are ideal examples of what true love and partnership looks like, college senior and aspiring romance novelist Sophia is plagued by insecurities relating to her ability to achieve physical passion with a man. When she interviews her campus’s most notorious king of the no strings attached hookup and resident hockey god, she decides he’d make the perfect partner to help her fine tune her bedroom skills without risk of catching feelings.

It’s all but certain that Leo will be signed by the Bruins at the end of his senior year, and he’s managed to deftly avoid emotional entanglements while simultaneously being a prodigious player among coed hookups. When he meets Sophia, however, he’s immediately struck by the fact that his feelings toward her are different, that she’s in his own words, “different than most girls”. (Hard cringe, here, though that’s probably just me…)

Of course the universe has other plans, and these polar opposites, who are also perfect for each other - and physically perfect and beautiful, etc. - can’t just hit then quit: big feels happen. Sophia is adamant that she’s returning to Hawaii because she can’t imagine living so far from her family, but Leo’s passion for hockey and a fledgling career in the NHL mean Hawaii’s not in the cards for him. How in the world can this possibly work?

This is a fairly lengthy (over 450 pages) novel, and I love hockey, and love open door romance, so this checked many of my boxes.

I received an advance reader copy from The Author Agency, and I’m sharing my honest thoughts.

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down once I started and fell in love with the characters.

Leo is known as a playboy around campus, never sticking with the same girl more than once. He is focused on winning the final four and then signing with the NHL Bruins. After meeting up with a reporter for the school paper, things start to change. He is more interested in just one woman now.

Sophia’s only goals is writing her first book and finishing school so she can return back home to Oahu. She hasn’t had many relationships and is starting to wonder if maybe she is the problem. She comes up with the idea to sleep with Leo and have him give her feedback and be completely honest with her.

Sophia and Leo made an agreement to be friends with benefits for research purposes, but soon it starts to become more. He wants her to be friends with him also. He doesn’t want to just be a fling with her anymore. The two both have an amazing and strong family support system at home and great friends. They quickly become closer and decide to just enjoy each others time while they can.

I loved watching the two blossom and grow. Two unlikely people come together to form a perfect connection.

Never Settle is a college hockey romance that stems from a 'teach me' proposition.

Sophia is a writer for the college paper AND a romance novelist (yes, she is writing a sexy novel). Unfortunately, she has only been with 1 person before, intimately and struggles with writing sexy scenes. So who better to ask to help with intimacy than the resident eff boy.

Leo is our hockey captain that gets spotted by Sophia before their interview for the school paper. Leo is the eff boy that has slept with most of the campus. & in his last year of college isn't searching for 'the one' but may have found it in Sophia. The down bad Leo gets to spend more time with Sophia as she is tasked with covering the hockey team during their season. One, to get more people to come watch them play and two, to showcase the seniors as they continue their journey into the NHL.

Both characters are close with their families and often confide in them with how their feelings evolve over the book. I enjoyed the story and the characters so much. Because hockey players aren't just hockey players and Sophia isn't just a writer. Both characters have depth and I really loved how the story progressed.

PS. There is a mild drugging with no SA. AND There is a 3rd act break up so be prepared...

I just loved Leo and Sophia's story. They meet when she needs to write an article for the school newspaper on the star captain of the hockey team. While both are instantly attracted to each other, Leo knows she's meant to be an important part of his life. They talk and start out as friends but she goes to him and wants one night with him to gain experience. It was never going to be just one night, soon they are spending all their free time together, falling more and more for each other. With graduation coming up and Sophia moving back to Hawaii and Leo playing for the Bruins, they no it won't last. Can they have it all and each other?

Never Settle by Dani Grimes is a captivating start to the Next Gen Series, delivering an emotionally layered and passionate college sports romance. The story revolves around Leo Harrison, the charismatic captain of the Boston University hockey team, who is laser-focused on clinching the Frozen Four and signing with the Boston Bruins. With a close-knit family and the respect of his teammates, Leo has it all—except for a meaningful romantic connection. His aversion to relationships is tested when he meets Sophia Grimes, a fiercely independent and driven writer determined to finish her debut novel and return home to her family in Oahu after graduation.

Sophia is assigned to interview Leo for the university paper, a task she approaches with reluctance, knowing his reputation for cockiness. However, an unexpected spark leads her to seek out Leo for a one-time experience of passion before college ends. What begins as a casual arrangement quickly transforms into something deeper, forcing both characters to confront their future paths. The tension between their individual goals—Leo’s career in professional hockey and Sophia’s longing for home—creates a genuine and heartfelt conflict that drives the narrative.

The character development is a standout feature. Leo isn’t just the stereotypical jock; he is vulnerable and introspective beneath his confident exterior. Sophia’s strength lies in her sense of self and unwillingness to compromise on what matters most to her. Their chemistry is electric, but it’s the emotional connection that makes their romance believable and compelling. Dani Grimes's portrayal of long-distance dilemmas, ambition, and personal sacrifice elevates the novel, offering more than just a steamy romance.

Never Settle is a thoughtful and emotionally rich romance that explores the crossroads between love and ambition. With realistic stakes and relatable characters, it’s a strong beginning to the series and a worthwhile read for anyone who enjoys heartfelt, character-driven love stories.

Leo’s the campus heartthrob, hockey captain, total player, and dead set on making it to the Bruins after graduation. Sophia’s more low key. She’s focused on finishing her degree and chasing her dream of writing romance novels like her dad. Only problem? Her agent says her spicy scenes are... well, not so spicy. She needs real inspiration. Sophia’s not exactly confident when it comes to physical stuff, so she decides to get some hands-on research. Who better to ask than the king of no strings hookups himself? Leo seems like the perfect guy to help her figure out what passion actually feels like, strictly for the sake of her writing, of course. They both agree it’s just for fun. No feelings. No drama. But with graduation coming fast and 5,000 miles about to separate them, catching feelings might be harder to avoid than they thought.

Leo fell hard for Soph, like, head over heels, no looking back. He was ready to give up his player ways without a second thought, which was honestly super cute. From the moment he met her, he knew she wasn’t like anyone else. She felt different, and he felt different about her. Sophia, meanwhile, started to really grow into herself. She gained confidence, found her people in Leo’s family and her close friends, and built a kind of chosen family that made her feel like she finally belonged. It all tied into the heart of the story so well. What I loved most? There wasn’t a bunch of over-the-top drama. No big blowups with friends or messy family drama, just two people who truly loved each other and worked through stuff as it came up. It felt real. Both Leo and Sophia are super close with their families which added a lot of depth.

I was all in on their story, not just because Leo’s more than your typical hotshot hockey player or because Sophia’s more than a romance writer, but because they felt real. Like, actual people with layers, flaws, and all the messy feelings that come with falling in love. This book totally surprised me with how sweet it was. I was hooked from the very first page, and the whole thing just flew by. Watching them slowly fall for each other, while being totally blind to what was happening, was honestly adorable. It gave me all the warm, fuzzy feels.

You can enjoy this as a standalone, but since it’s a sequel to two earlier series, I’d recommend reading those first! It’s completely binge worthy, and trust me, you’ll be eager to get your hands on Book 2 right away. Thank you The Author Agency and Dani for this arc opportunity! So grateful for your work! Never Settle is book one in the Next Gen series and is story of Leo and Sophia. This is a strangers to lovers, "teach me", hockey romance.

Leo is the captain of the Boston University hockey team and has already been signed to the Boston Bruins upon graduation. With the reputation as a player who never sleeps with the same woman twice, he is completely sideswiped when he has to be interviewed by the university paper reporter, Sophia. From the moment he laid his eyes on Sophia, there is something that draws her to him.

Sophia is an aspiring writer and her goal for her senior year is to have her book published and move back home to Oahu to be with her family. Sophia did not expect to have an immediate attraction to Leo and sees him as only what she has heard about him, he is a cocky hockey player and a playboy. As Sophie's questions to Leo get more in depth, she starts to realize that Leo isn't who she thought he was.

Sophia realizes that she has been missing out on life as her ex tries to convince her to get back together with him when she goes home for Thanksgiving break. To further her research for her book and try to find the passion her friends experience, Sophia propositions Leo for one night of hooking up to see if she is the problem. For Leon, one night will never be enough and when Sophie proposes more "research" he agrees but want so much more than what she is offering.

As the hockey season progresses , Leo and Sophia get closer and what was once just a hookup feels like so much more. When Sophia is put in danger at a party, Leo is there to protect her and that is when he realizes his feelings go much deeper than even he realized.

This book has a different spin than your typical hockey romance and I am here for it. There is spice, sweetness, a protective hockey player who will do anything to protect his woman and will let her go if that is what will make her happy. The characters were phenomenal and the way Dani wrote all of the family members for both Leo and Sophia was descriptive and made you want to be part of their families. You could feel the love between Leo and Sophia and how they had both grew up wanting no less than the love they both deserved and had witnessed was beautiful.

This is a hockey romance but it is also so much more. There is a love of family, chasing your dreams, sharing who you are and what you want for the future as well as fantastic spice, a little heartbreak but a HEA that will leave you kicking your feet. Well done Dani, can't wait to read Jace's book!

I opened this book with no expectations and an open heart, eager to discover the voice of a new-to-me author. What I found betwee left me utterly undone. I was completely blown away by the emotional depth and vulnerability threaded through every chapter—this wasn’t just a love story; it was an experience that left a mark on me.

The male main character, a mature college senior, is poised on the edge of greatness. With unwavering ambition, relentless dedication, and a quiet intensity, he’s chasing a dream he’s worked his whole life for: a future in the NHL, with a contract signed with the Boston Bruins waiting for him after graduation. He's also known as the campus F'kboy, all hook-ups, no attachments.
And then there’s the female lead—an aspiring romance author with a tender heart and a complicated legacy. Her father, a famous author, but she stands in her own light, determined to make her voice heard.

What begins as a casual, friends-with-benefits arrangement between them slowly transforms into something far more intimate and inevitable. Beneath every glance, incredibly scorching hot encounter, it becomes achingly clear that their hearts are no longer pretending. They’re falling—hard, and all too aware that a breakup is looming on the horizon.

But what sets their story apart is the profound love and respect they hold for one another. It’s not just physical, though their chemistry is explosive and undeniable—it’s emotional, spiritual even. They bare themselves to each other in ways that are breathtakingly honest. There’s no room for games or pretense here; only raw truth and aching vulnerability.

Their love is selfless. Their pain, visceral. And as a reader, I didn’t just witness it—I felt it. Their heartache became my heartache. Their sorrow seeped through the pages and broke me open. What happens when an aspiring romance author needs to up her spicy game in the bedroom? She asks her college campus’ most notorious playboy to help her. It’s all for research, there will be no feelings involved, and was it mentioned it was for research? Dani Grimes gives readers just this in Never Settle, book 1 in her Next Gen series. This ties into a previous series, and while I recommend you read those, cuz of course I do, you don’t have to in order to enjoy this new series.

When it comes to writing romance, Sophia is good at it all, except making the bedroom scenes feel organic and not clinical, according to her editor. Being in her senior year of college, she’s never been able to finish with a man, but is ready to throw caution to the wind. When she interviews the school’s hockey team god, king of no string hookups, she bravely asks for his help. Again, all for research and no feelings involved. He agrees. She can do this right? Become confident in the bedroom while not falling for the super hot hockey player. Yeah…she can…

Leo is certain he’s going to the NHL after graduation and nothing is derailing that goal. He doesn’t do emotional relationships, but does partake in frequent hookups. When he meets Sophia, he is immediately drawn to her like no other girl before. When he agrees to help her, he is confident feelings won’t be an issue. But as he gets to know her, he continues to have that feeling that she is different, dare he say special. But a relationship, especially one that will have 5000 miles between them, was never on his to do list.

Dani has written such an amazing romance between Sophia and Leo. While longer romance books can tend to drag and become repetitive, Dani’s story does not do this. The storyline remains fresh and clear, while everything between our MCs feels natural and real. As these two fall harder and harder for each other, while never actually talking about it due to their agreement, it is obvious they are perfect for each other. Their love story is 1000% worth reading about and you will not want to put this book down.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Never Settle is not only the 1st book of the Next Gen series but it is my first read by Dani Grimes and it was absolutely bloody brilliant!

Leo, the captain of the Boston U hockey team first meets Sophia when she is assigned to interview him for the school newspaper and they have an instant connection. Leo has a bit of a reputation as a playboy, so when Sophia, an aspiring romance novelist wants some inspiration for her novel’s spicy scenes, as well as a way of gaining some much needed experience in the bedroom department, she goes to Leo for help. Although what was supposed to be a one time thing soon goes from being a casual friends with benefits agreement, to something so much deeper. But with an end date of graduation, when Leo is due to join the Boston Bruins hockey team and Sophia has plans to return to her family 5000 miles away in Hawaii, the pair of them have to work out what it is they really want.

I really enjoyed everything about this book, both Sophia and Leo were brilliant characters who I absolutely loved.

I adored how hard Leo fell for Sophia from the get go, as well as his willingness to take whatever she offered him as a way of spending time with her. The fact that he wanted to be her friend rather than just a regular hook up, proved that the assumptions she’d made about him were unfounded and the way he instantly changed his playboy ways for her showed he was such a sweet, caring and all round amazing guy. Sophia was such a fun, witty character with a teasing nature and a definite over thinker. It was so good seeing Leo help to build up her confidence and become the calming presence she needed throughout this story.
The chemistry the pair shared was undeniable but the emotional connection between them could definitely be felt throughout and made their relationship feel so natural. I just loved the way they fitted so perfectly together.

Both of them had such amazing, loving, supportive families that you couldn’t help but fall in love with and they were all absolutely hilarious, especially when they got together!

I can’t freaking wait for the next one of this series, looks like I’ll be going back and reading Dani’s previous series while I’m waiting!

Dani Grimes's Never Settle, an intense and emotionally rich college sports romance, serves as a captivating start to the Next Gen Series. Leo Harrison, the energetic leader of Boston University's hockey squad, is the central figure in the story. He is fixated on securing the Frozen Four title and becoming a member of the Boston Bruins.

Sophia is working on a romance book (yes, she’s crafting a steamy story) as well as a university assignment. Unfortunately, she has experienced just one intimate relationship and struggles to compose sensual scenes. The local eff boy is the perfect individual to seek help with intimacy.

Sophia spots Leo, our hockey captain, prior to their interview for the school newspaper. Most of the campus has been with Leo, the charming guy. He isn’t searching for 'the one' during his last year of college, yet he might have discovered it in Sophia. As Sophia is tasked with covering the hockey team throughout their season, the unfortunate Leo has the opportunity to spend more time with her. The primary goal is to boost attendance, while the secondary aim is to showcase the seniors as they pursue their NHL careers.

The prose is lucid and emotionally perceptive, alternating between Leo and Sophia's perspectives to aid readers in understanding their internal struggles. The emotional core of the story is never eclipsed by the exciting energy that the hockey backdrop provides. Dani Grimes's portrayal of ambition, selflessness, and long-distance challenges elevates the novel beyond a mere sultry romance.

While this can be enjoyed as an independent novel, I highly recommend reading the initial two books in the series, as those characters are the parents, and there are numerous references to their histories throughout the story. Regardless, this was amazing, featuring beautiful character growth and a level of emotional insight that astonished and pleased me.

Leo Harrison is the talented, cocky captain of the hockey team, who refuses to settle and has meaningless hook-ups instead of real relationships.
He is determined to win the championship with his team and move on to the NHL, where he already has a contract with the Bruins. He is lasered focus on his career and fulfilling his dream of playing in the pros.
Sophie Grimes is an intelligent college student with her mind set on becoming a famous novelist and moving back to Hawaii, where her family lives and with whom she maintains a very close relationship.
She is sent to do an interview with the playboy hockey star and at 22 years old is yet to feel the passion and true desire to be with someone, until she meets Leo.
With a proposition that he can’t turn down, they become friends with benefits in order to explore Sophie’s lack of experience and sexuality.
Their relationship quickly escalates and turns into so much more.
Leo is the first to fall and fall hard, but Sophie isn’t that far behind.
They are perfect together and perfect for each other, but their futures don’t align as Leo is supposed to stay in Boston to play for the Bruins and Sophie wants to move back home to be close to her family in Oahu. So, how can this perfect relationship work and last?
This story is truly beautiful. It depicts how true love is possible, but sometimes out of reach, how compromise is always important, how family matters and help in the worst moments, how personal sacrifice isn’t much of a struggle when you truly love someone and how heartfelt can a love story be.
I absolutely loved it and Leo Harrison’s determination, fierce love and personal sacrifice will stay with me for a long time.
Just perfect!
Thank you for the ARC.

Obsessed. This book is so good. My favorite sport, hockey, with a boy obsessed with his girl main character who’s just perfection, it was everything I hoped it would be.

This was my first book by Dani Grimes and it absolutely will not be my last. The characters, the story, the backdrop, the tropes, the genre…..everything was on point. I have not one bad thing to say about this book.

This is Leo and Sophia’s story.
Leo is a known playboy at college. Never sleeps with the same girl twice, knows the girls on campus very well and happens to be Captain and Star hockey player with a pre approved contract for the Bruins when he finishes college in a year.

Sophia is an aspiring author, quiet but beautiful and lacking in the whole “college experience”. Her book she’s written and submitted to her agent for possible publication is good but those spicy scenes aren’t cutting it….because Sophia’s lack of experience (except the lackluster experiences with an ex boyfriend) has given her no knowledge of what she should write about….

In between her book writing, Sophia is reporting for the college paper and is asked to interview and write an article about hockeys golden boy Leo Harrison.

Sophia knows Leo’s reputation, Leo notices how beautiful Sophia is and wonders why he never saw her on campus before and while he’s determined to get the girl, Sophia is thinking that maybe Leo with all his “experience” could be the one to help her “research” for her book….

What happens from there is a great mix of banter, will they or won’t they, AMAZING spice, and what would you sacrifice to secure your Happy Ever After?

I can’t recommend this book enough. If you love hockey romance done perfectly, this is the book for you.

When Sophia is tasked with writing an article for the college newspaper on hockey captain Leo she never expected to turn up at his door asking for a one night stand so she can experience passionate sex before graduating. When one night turns into an exclusive, causal, friends with benefits arrangement neither of them expect it to turn into love, especially because it’s only until graduation. Leo will be staying in Boston to play in the NHL and Sophia will heading home to Oahu to the family she can’t live without. But as graduation comes, can they really say goodbye? Or will they finally have the conversation needed and work out a way to make things work without either of them sacrificing too much?

I LOVED this so much!! Technically it’s hockey since Leo is a hockey player but there’s very little hockey action so I’d call it more hockey adjacent which still counts! What can I even say about Leo? That man fell hard and he fell fast!! I adore him!! He went along with anything and everything Sophia wanted just keep her happy and that is rare! These two together were just perfect and I can’t wait to see more of them throughout the series. Also another two series have been added to my never ending TBR so that I can read the first gen books because although they’re not absolutely necessary to understanding this book I’m intrigued and I need more!!

This is an ARC review and all opinions are my own. Thank you to The Author Agency for the ARC copy of this book and for the opportunity to read and review it

"He was loyal in a way that most people only experienced with a handful of people in a lifetime." - Sophia

"She always played off my comments like I was joking rather than acknowledge what I was actually doing, which was confessing how into her I was." - Leo

Sophia is writing a book and needs inspiration to write the spicy parts. She asks Leo if they can have spicy time after she interviews him, for an article (the articles that she writes in her own unique style and text messages between family are also in the book!) that she writes about the teammates.

Leo is very sweet and agrees to "teach her," and then they started to form a friendship, Leo was always very clear that he liked being around her, and it took her a while to see that. Leo is very sweet, a total gentleman that gives her room to explore with him, and he is vulnerable around her. He reassured her very early on, that he doesn't care what others might say about them, and that really helped her feel comfortable around him. He is the biggest green flag!

They really care a lot about each other, feel safe, and keep each other safe. He fell first and hard; it was love at first sight for him. Something about her just felt different. The hurt/comfort is so good! And the friendships, I'm really enjoying this series! Leo and Sophia are such a power couple. They both have loving families, and I love how involved they are in each other's lives.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

I picked this book up not knowing what to expect—and what I found completely floored me. This isn’t just a romance. It’s a gut-punch of a story that reaches deep and doesn’t let go.

The male lead is a college senior on the verge of going pro in the NHL—focused, disciplined, and fiercely determined. He’s got the reputation of a player, but there’s so much more beneath the surface. Then there’s the female protagonist: an aspiring romance writer trying to find her own voice under the shadow of her famous father. She’s soft-hearted, sharp-witted, and impossible not to root for.

What starts off as a casual, no-strings-attached arrangement turns into something far deeper than either of them saw coming. Their chemistry? Off the charts. But it’s the emotional intimacy—the honesty, the respect, the vulnerability—that sets this apart.

This story hurt in the best possible way. It’s raw. It’s tender. It’s full of longing and healing and everything in between. I felt every moment. And yes—I cried. Real, ugly tears. This book cracked something open in me, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

One of the most emotionally resonant love stories I’ve read in a long time. Highly, highly recommend.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this book. I saw hockey and jumped at the chance to read it but I was in for such a treat! This story isn’t just a sports romance filed with sunshine and rainbows,It’s a gut-punch of a story that reaches deep and doesn’t let go.

Leo Harrison is the captain of the Boston University hockey team, who has all his focus on clinching the Frozen Four and signing with the Boston Bruins at the end of his senior year. He has a supper tight knit family, he’s close with his teammates but has a strong aversion to relationships…Major playboy! He is tested when he meets Sophia Grimes, a fiercely independent writer who is determined to finish her debut novel and return home to her family in Oahu after graduation. They met when Sophia is assigned to interview Leo for the school paper. Sparks fly but with knowing Leo’s reputation Sophia just chalks it up to nothing. Until she decides he’d be perfect for her to ask for a one time passion filled experience before college ends. Feelings get involved, one thing leads to another and ugh I can’t spoil it without ugly crying so I’ll stop but just know it’s sooooo good!

This story hurt in the best possible way. It’s raw and emotional. The longing and healing, all the revelations by the MCs plus both of their big loving families…I felt every moment and my heart broke right along with them. Even shed some big ugly tears.

Definitely add to your tbr immediately. It’s not something to miss!

OMG why am I late to the Dani Grimes fan club! This is my first book by Dani and I am obsessed. I need to read her backlog asap because if this book consumed all my attention I can only imagine what the others will do to me. I loved everything about this storyline but I am obsessed with ALL the adults in both Sophia and Leo’s lives. I want to be in their friend circle and have some drinks with them!

Ok now on to the book review, Leo and Sophia’s love story was so emotional. I went through all the emotions with them as a couple. Reformed playboy, Leo never thought he would meet the love of his life until Sophia walked in the door of his family restaurant. Their friends with benefits turned into love for Leo right away and he waited patiently for Sophia to be on the same page. Leo is definitely book boyfriend material especially after he took care of Sophia after a traumatic experience. There was a little heartbreak but their love for each other gives them the best HEA.

✨I received this book as an ARC for free in exchange for an honest review✨

This is my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed at all. I feel like I am in my hockey era. This story really had it all. I loved how the guy was the one that was instantly obsessed with the girl. She was a lot more stand offish and did not know how to handle a guy that knew that he never wanted to settle for anything less than perfect. We go into this story as a friends with benefits situation even though for him it never was. He wanted the girl and would do anything to get her. Their relationship was hard at times because they both had a timeline for it ending. They only thought about when it would end but never how they could make it work. There was a lot of push and pull from that aspect of the story. I may or may not have shed a few tears every time they talked about their time coming to an end because they were from opposite sides of the country. I love how the author did not drag out the end. I cannot wait to see what happens in her upcoming books from this series. This was a fantastic start to a series. I cannot wait to go back and read all the other stories about their parents.

Have you ever picked up a series that just sucked you right in , in ways you never would have expected ? That had you falling in love with each and every character / couple from the very first book and where you found yourself completely immersed in the world the author has created ? That had the ability to make you feel so many different emotions you never saw coming? Everything from smiling and laughing out loud , to crying like a baby to actually being speechless at times and screaming outta pure frustration during others . That had you cheering so freaking hard from start to finish, Kinda like being on the craziest ride at the amusement park !!! you know that feeling you get in your stomach from being excited and nervous at the same time - the anticipation of whats to come next ? Well Never Settle just did all of the above in spades . I have to say nothing could have prepared me for Leo and Sophie . The way these two just had my heart , the degree to which I fell completely in love with both characters separately and as a couple. Well I honestly do not think any words do even describe.

Never Settle by Dani Grimes is the kind of romance that grabs hold of your heart from page one and refuses to let go. I had the opportunity to read it around release day, and I’m so glad I didn’t wait—this story delivers a perfect balance of vulnerability, slow-burn chemistry, and emotional growth.

The characters are beautifully layered. The heroine’s quiet strength and the hero’s protective edge made for a dynamic that was both heartwarming and addictively intense. Their journey toward love felt earned, authentic, and deeply satisfying. The pacing was just right, and the emotional beats hit in all the best ways.

Dani Grimes writes with warmth and insight, making the characters feel real and their connection undeniable. There’s a sense of hope threaded throughout the book that leaves you smiling long after the final page.

Highly recommend to fans of emotional contemporary romance with heart, depth, and characters you’ll root for. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Dani Grimes!

Never Settle is book one of the Next Gen series and follows the lives of Leo Harrison, star and captain of the Boston University hockey team, and Sophia Grimes, senior who is writing her first novel and cannot wait to return to her family in Hawaii. Sophia works for the school paper and is assigned a piece on Leo. It turns into a full time writing assignment and she finds herself following the team everywhere. Leo is attracted to Sophia and when she asks him to help her with research for her book and asks for a one night stand. They realize one night will not be enough and even though they have real deep feelings for each other, there is this understanding that come graduation they will be going their separate ways. Leo is NHL bound and Sophia is going to be thousands of miles away. At times I just wanted to scream at them to tell the other they wanted to stay together. You forget that they are only 22 years old and this love may be very strong but they are still young. This book was perfection and I loved how Leo was willing to sacrifice his future for Sophia.

Reading about Leo in Unexpected Moments growing up and when Sophia came to stay with them for that Christmas was awesome and made me want their story more. Now getting to see them fall in love and realize that they are meant to be and seeing them grow was amazing. What Devon did for his brother was messed up when the whole team tried to warn him and the fact of what his brother did to Sophia at said party was even more messed up. Leo should've punched them both in the throat but he did the right thing by calling the cops and reporting him for possession and giving Sophia the choice to do what she wanted when she came to on her own instead of forcing her. I also love how Leo went off on Devon on their last game because he was out of line and how Adrian told Sophia that if Devon tried to press charges as long as Sutton knew what was going on she could help them. I love how both families welcomed each other into their families. This one was amazing and I cannot wait to see what is next for the Oahu and Boston families.

Never Settle by Dani Grimes was exactly the type of book I needed when if I didn’t know it!
It was a cute and spicy look into first love and the ups and downs of your plans changing 🤗
The plot kept me coming back, the characters were amazing and the writing was fantastic!
This was my first Dani Grimes book but I can’t wait for the next in the series and I will be going back and reading her others while I wait!
The MMC Leo had my whole ass heart from the start! He was the sweetest, most loving man and everything that Sophia needed!
The FMC Sophia was funny and direct lol
I liked her teasing nature and I also loved seeing her grow into herself and her confidence especially with Leo!
Overall a book I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a sweet & spicy (cause holy shit the spice was 🌶️🥵) first love college romance!

*Thank you to Dani Grimes, her team and The Author Agency for sending me an ARC on this book!*

Wow! This was my first book by Dani Grimes and I absolutely loved it. It had me hooked right from the start. Never Settle is the first book in the Next Gen Series.

Leo was a great MMC. He has a lot on his plate and so much going for him at such a young age. I thought these two were perfect for each other. Their love was truly so sweet and I loved every second of their story unfolding! Sometimes when the characters are on a timeline in their relationship it can be hard for me to fully invest in the couple but these two drew me in right from the immediately.

I can’t wait to see what the next book in this series holds!

Thank you to Dani Grimes and The Author Agency for the ARC of this book.
