Numismatics aka coin collection is a popular hobby among several people across the world. Some people collect coins as a memory/ souvenir from places they visit/ travel to. Others collect coins for their artistic, intrinsic values in the hope of getting a windfall someday. Samuel Archer brings this interesting book for enthusiastic coin collectors detailing how to identify and authenticate mint errors and hopefully make a profit. This book features a proven 10-step system along with several expert strategies to enhance, improve, and make your coin collection profitable.
The ten-chapter volume starts off with a brief introduction in which Archer details the significance of error coins in numismatics. “Error coins occupy a fascinating space at the intersection of history, technology, and chance. Unlike coins intentionally struck to commemorate a president or historic event, error coins aren’t designed to be rare—they just happen to be,” writes Archer explaining how these small errors potentially make the coin rare and valuable. According to the author minting mistakes are celebrated in the coin collecting world.
The first chapter provides interesting information about the making of US coins – a detailed lifecycle of each coin from concept to circulation is indeed educational. Different kinds of minting errors, how they happen, how they end up in circulation and get inflated valuations is very interesting. In subsequent chapters Archer explains the different types of errors including Die Errors, Strike Errors, Planchet errors, among others.
The chapter I found very informative is the one titled “Avoiding Fakes and Common Mistakes.” In this chapter Archer explains how to approach error coins with a “trained, skeptical eye, and develop instincts,” so that one can trust evidence rather than emotions while investing in these error coins. Each of these chapters are replete with images, photographs, drawings, tables, and other visual aids to help the reader understand the concept and not get swindled in their quest for rare coins. A detailed list of peer-reviewed references concludes the book with great deal of information to help the novice or even the experienced coin collector to make your hobby profitable.

Excited About Collecting Again!
Error coins always seemed like an alien beast to me. I couldn't figure out anything with them from the types, what to look for, value, anything other than my grandfather left me five of them to spur interest in collecting. This book FINALLY straightened me out, and I've read a ton online and in books. With clarity and simplicity, I was able to follow along through most of the details. The bugbear that still gets me is determining value as the ranges are far-sweeping, but at least I know what to look for and the type of error, as pictured in the example. For those of you who struggled for decades like me, here's your solution.
