This book collects the seven issues of the Dell Comics run of Prince Valiant that were published as a tie-in with the movie of the same name. The movie of course was the film version of the classic Sunday comic strip which Hal Foster worked on for decades. Artist Bob Fujitani is not Hal Foster but then again, there are few that could match Foster's weekly masterpieces and especially not when working to a regular comic book deadline and overall he did a fine job on this assignment. I have no idea what happened to the original art for this series but Fantagraphics have done a fine job working to reproduce the comics from published materials. The lettering has also been renewed for this publication.

The stories here are outside of the regular continuity of the sunday strip and Val's wife Aleta in particular makes only fleeting appearances. Still, despite being spoiled by reading decades of the Foster originals, I enjoyed this book quite a lot more than I expected. The stories are very much in the Prince Valiant tradition and each issue includes a pretty much self-contained adventure. Dell produced some fine comic books over the years and it is great to see theses in an archival edition.
