"You can check in any time you want,
But you can never leave..."
HOTEL CALIFORNIA by The Eagles

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow!
This book had me from the very first line! Within three pages on my Kindle, I had to highlight the following sentence:
"Rack of human ribs which still had the skin on one side for 'easy roast crackling'."
How can you NOT want to read this story?!

Michael Bray, you beauty you!

This story is about people in a supermarket who notice things for sale which should really not be...well, available.
Human body parts.
And then, once faced with this reality, it becomes clear that nobody will be allowed to leave.
What the hell is going on?
And how much conflict can human nature create among themselves in a hopeless situation?

The whole atmosphere of this story is very reminiscent of THE MIST by Stephen King, but everything about this story impressed me because...
No, I'm not going to give it away.

I loved this one. And that ending knocked me on my ass.
I can ask for nothing more!

'Supermarket meat that is just such a treat'

This brief shopping trip proved to be just oh so deliciously enjoyable - but very different to what I was actually expecting. Going into the supermarket experience, I was fully prepared to be subjected to detailed descriptions of mutilations and outrages of the ultra-violent and intensely gruesome persuasion but was actually presented with a clever and highly amusing blood and body part, murderous 'vampo-cannibalistic' romp which took place in such an ordinary, accepted, normal everyday setting.

Garrett and fellow shoppers enter Grueber's, the new downtown food store, but after discovering some of the highly unusual sickly grim and grisly items on display dotted around the shop they decide instead to attempt to exit and inform the authorities at the earliest opportunity. Unfortunately for them, that is when they realise that they are trapped and they themselves may well become the new fridge freezer offerings of tomorrow. Not a good place to be - but how on earth can they escape such a diabolical and demonic situation, what exactly is going on and who is behind the whole blood thirsty operation?

The story itself felt like eating a nice big wholesome sandwich. A strong 'eye-watering,' gobsmacking start, a quite brilliant, just how I like it, incredible ending and, in the middle, a rich and flavoursome 'shopping in the supermarket', character developing, meat filling. Perhaps at this stage there was slightly too much dialogue in the human relationships department rather than delivering more of the
truly terrifying and macabre fun-filled gruesomeness that would have added that extra bit of garnish to complete the truly appetising, 'top of the range' final product.

Yep, this was a great idea, with some lovely touches and all contained within a quite wonderful plot, but for some reason I just couldn't quite buy into it being workable in real-life. I think the problem was the fact that no customers were ever allowed to leave the store, and so I viewed the whole scenario as just being possible for a particular time period, say 1 hour, rather than as a rolling, ongoing situation, for every minute of every day.

However, all in all, a quite brilliant read which had lots to say about us humans in general, typified by the unforeseen character building ending that just about said it all. Well, that's the human race for you - what can you expect!

Highly recommended. Rating: 4.3 meaty human stars.

For those of you that really pay attention - you know WHY I started reading Michael Bray. When I looked into his books, I knew that MEAT had to be one of the first books of his that I read. Growing up, I would spend my summers in the country with my grandparents, and the local grocery store there was a Grueber's! The store is still there, but it has since changed into Buschs. Now I'm left wondering - was my Gruber's a specialty market? Did it pick up and move on to serve the special clients in another area? Possibly. I'll be sure to watch things a little more carefully from now on, because if I'm ever in need of some specialty meat - it had damned well be fresh & free range!!
That's what caught Garrett's eye as he was strolling down the isle - the sign advertising today'special …
  Grueber’s Free Range human foot!

  White male left foot,

Pre washed and ready to cook.

  Delicious, hot or cold!

He thought that was a bit odd, to say the least. This quick stop at the market had just turned into an experience, that if he made it out alive, he was sure he would never, ever> forget.

I especially liked the direction that the author went with the characters. Human nature, my friends - It bites ya in the ass.

I found a cool alternate cover on Amazon, too...

UMM!! WELL!! A very strange and unusual book,I found the characters strong but the storyline a little weak. I was expecting a lot more gore and horror from this going by the picture on the front cover and the comments on the back cover...but you know what they say "Never judge a book by it's cover". I'm not going to say that I hated the book...and I'm not going to say that I loved it either,I enjoyed the whole concept of the vampire "thing" but unfortunately it didn't float my boat as much as I thought it would.I won't give up on this author as I have a couple more of his books on my TBR list...just hoping these turn out to be a better read for me next time??

Just read this in a single day and have to say this is one of the best horror stories I have read in ages! It is absolutely grisly, gruesome and nasty ~ in other words, right up my street!

A group of shoppers find themselves trapped in a new supermarket with no hope of escape. On the shelves are disembodied feet (seasoned ready for cooking), pickled eyes and fresh tongue kebabs - all mixed in amongst the usual produce. At first some of them think it is all some kind of sick, practical joke but when some of them try to leave, they quickly learn there is only one way they are getting out of this store...and it's not through the front doors!

This is an awesome, awesome, awesome read and one hell of a ride! It is quite simply one of the best short horror novels that I have read in ages! It feels heavily influenced by Richard Laymon in places and is exceptionally nasty right through to the end. The climax alone will leave you gasping, let alone the rest of the novel! It really is a roller coaster ride from start to finish!

This is the first piece of fiction I have read by author, Michael Bray but you can be certain, it won't be the last! I was left speechless, reeling and almost sickened at times by the sheer horror and brutality depicted within but you know what? Horror simply doesn't get much better than this!

This is how much the book influenced me: mid-reading, I popped into my local Tesco Express to pick up a couple of things. Walking around the shelves, I found myself half-consciously looking around for disembodied limbs and decapitated heads - it wasn't till I got to the till that I realised what I had been doing! This is the sign of a good author, that he can so engross you in his writing that you find yourself actually living what you have been reading in your head! Few writers have this ability and so for M.Bray to achieve this shows just how good a writer he really is!

Though technically written to a standard well above what this type of genre usually serves up, Meat: Uncut is lessened by the very reason for its existence: the additional sections that have been added back to a shorter, pre-existing work. In essence, this short novel is extremely repetitive in nature, rehashing the same character beats time and again, with the pace significantly suffering as a result.

The idea itself is a good one. A group of disparate characters is trapped in a supermarket as they become aware there are body parts and other items made from people lining the shelves. Soon thereafter they realise they are due to become those items on the shelves, as their captors reveal their plans ... With more than the occasional echo back to Stephen King's classic The Mist, Meat:Uncut starts well, but all too soon begins to spin its wheels as scene after scene details how a character sees something horrible and then their sanity teeters on the brink. By the time the actual threat is revealed, my interest had already waned. However, the quality writing helped me hang in there for what proved to be a very unorthodox conclusion - one that I'm both somewhat disappointed in and impressed by.

There is more than enough within Meat:Uncut for me to seek out more from Bray, but next time, I'll be sure to get something that is not expanded, extra, or padded out.

A fun, fast read. This story shared some elements with SK’s “The Mist”, but overall had a unique tale to tell.

The scenes with the human products were pretty gross. I felt there could be more action to the story, instead of people milling around for half of it. The backstory of the creatures would definitely interesting to read as a prequel!

The sense of dread as you read this story is palpable. What was once a mundane chore, shopping for a few groceries, has become a horrific event! An entertaining story with an unexpected ending! Recommended!

Michael Bray has captured the feelings of fear and hopelessness well in this gory, tense and disturbing tale.
I found this book very unnerving.  I could almost imagine how it would feel to walk into a supermarket, see the items for sale on the shelves and eventually realise, for reasons not yet known to you, that you can't leave.

I enjoyed watching the characters unravel, wondering who would be next to adopt the blank eyed stare and drooling mouth, or which character would be next to try something desperate.
The animosity between the main character Garret and antagonist Bernard Winthorpe is interesting to observe, why is Winthorpe behaving the way he is, is it mere fear or something else?
There is an almost tangible feel of 'them and us ' between the people in the store as they begin to come together into groups and tensions rise as the situation becomes clearer and even more extreme.
I enjoyed the twist at the end, didn't see that coming!
Highly recommend.

Well that was definitely interesting, grotesque, horrifying, disturbing and very true to the human race.

Ray Garrett finds himself in a supermarket, a very strange supermarket, full of disturbing merchandise and staff. He suddenly realizes what is happening and rallies to find others to help with an escape. The people are divided, some are against, some are willing and some are just like zombies wandering around the store. Finally a plan is in place, but things don't actually go as planned.

This story is gripping and the ending will shock you. Michael Bray does a good job with this story. Keeping you reading to find out how they will get out of this one, if they can.

3.5 stars only because of the grammatical errors, but an overall 4 star rating for the story as a whole.

Really really enjoyed this clever twist on a vampire story. It was so unique and such an entertaining read. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was that within the first few pages, the word 'bulimic' was used to describe the way someone looked. With some of the extreme horror books I read that might seem like a daft thing to get offended by, but it just touched a raw nerve and I'll be honest I'm not at all sure why the word was used to describe how thin the character was. Other than that, this was definitely one of the best books I've read this year.

A short, moderately entertaining horror novel about people trapped in a supermarket run by a gang of flesh eaters. It's well-written enough, but all rather silly and I was pleased that it didn't take long to read.

Garrett stopped by at a supermarket to pick up a few things and then to head home to his family. Little did he know that he would be walking into the supermarket of horrors. Not only is there freshly wrapped human limbs in the freezer it seems that escape isn't an option. Take a horror filled ride down the isles of Grueber's, and see what people will do in order to survive.

I picked this book up thinking that it would be a nice read. I have found that most horror books don't really scare me or bother me at all. This book scared me bad, taking something as ordinary as a food store and making me never want to step foot into one ever again. Michael Bray has a gift for story telling, putting you inside the heads of a few different people and making you care about what is going to happen to them. Making you hope that they make it out of this alive. When you care about the characters in a book it makes it all the better.

More then once I asked myself how I would have reacted if placed into a situation like that, and honestly I couldn't tell you. Half the time I would think that I would hold strong and try to escape, and the other half I would think that I would lose it and roam the isles with the rest of them. When a story makes you think like that you know it was good.

The only thing I didn't like is that it reminded me a little of the movie The Mist, I have never read Stephen Kings book so I can't compare it to that, but the feeling of the movie was close to this story, only with different monsters. Other then that this book creeped me out hard core.

Would I recommend it? Oh yeah I would, you never really want to watch a scary movie by yourself, same goes with a book. You need to spread that fear out to others so you can cope. Now if only I could convince myself that my local food stores are save to go into.

"There's A New Supermarket Called, "Gruebers!" And They Specialized In Unique Food. Come Along And Check Out There Aisles. But If You Visit, You Will Be Staying For A While......"

Creepy, Gruesome, Twisted, Well Written Story, Yet Intense Read. This Book Scared The Crap Out Of Me! Loved It. Wow! What a Story! It's Been A While Since I've Gotten So In To a Book! I Would Have Read It In One Sitting If I'd Had The Time. I Pictured Myself As The Customers (Because I Love Going To New Stores) And This Story Made Realize (My Hubby Is Right, We Don't Need To Be Checking Out That New Store! We Never Heard Of! Lol)

This Book Does Reminds Me Of The Movie; The Midnight Meat Train (2008) With A Mix Of The Mist (2007).

The Ending Was Shocking! *Jaw-Drop* I Couldn't Believe It! Mr. Bray, You Are An Awesome Story Teller!

If You Love a Detailed Bloody Gory Horror Thriller, With An Awesome Twist! I Highly Recommended. But Not For The Faint Of Heart.

I try mixing in indie author books from time to time, always hoping to find a rising star among the flotsam. Some indie books are pretty good and I've happily written about them (see Bottle Full of Scorpions review). This one involving people trapped by vampires in a grocery store with human body parts on the shelves was a bit of a rough read. It started out intriguing, which was why I kept reading, but then my interest waxed and waned throughout the rest of the story. The ending was better than I expected, even providing a bit of a twist. I wanted to feel a good connection with the main character, Garrett, but...just couldn't get there.

The author writes in the afterword that he got the idea by visiting the grocery store (lol! Don't go shopping with him) and just started writing from there. Needed some more wild humor, because with the promising premise this could make a good bizarro humor story, perhaps even a pretty good one with more significant tweaking and polishing. It read in the condition I saw like slightly polished first draft material needing more editing and work. 2,240 Kindle Locations. Not recommended.

Michael Bray creates a vampire like none I've ever read about before! He sneaks a little suspicion into your head about the reality of them living among us being a possibility.
Going about their daily business of running errands, a group of people becomes trapped in a supermarket. But, if you look closely at the shelves, and meat counter, you will see this is not your typical neighborhood grocery store.
The group of people must band together to make it out, but as with all groups of gathered people, there is always that one tyrant among the group who wants to take over. People choose sides, all hell breaks loose, and in a surprising twist, Bray made my entire faith in humanity crumble.

Awesomely gruesome, with a grand twist at the end! Gruber's grocery store opens up in a crappy neighborhood. The customers come in...but ppl noticed no one comes out! Also the shoppers discover parts of human bodies amidst the shelves and especially the meat/ butcher section of the store...human feet - white male packaged just like regular meat?? Some customers become zombies ( in shock, and unable to cope), some disappear...dragged into the back, and 2 parties work on an escape. I thought this book was a fun new take in the Creature genre!

A store opens in a run-down part of town. The first few customers discover some interesting items in the meat isle yet it appears the check-out counter is not to keen to ring up the purchases.

Good premise and an interesting twist at the end unfortunately is not enough to save an otherwise overlong read. This would be much better as a novella with half of the attempted character development prose edited out.

I could not put this book down! I started reading it one evening with the intentions of putting it down after 40 or so pages..... well, I finished it in one sitting.

The book jumps right in, and I literally mean jumps right in, you get the plenty of back story and character building as the story goes on the but the way this story starts does a great job of catching your attention and sucking you right in.

I'm learning that I'm apparently a fan of Michael Bray as I've read a couple of his other books as well and have enjoyed each one so far.

All I will say is that if you enjoy the film From Dusk Till Dawn. You will likely enjoy this book as well.

Entertaining horror book which follows main protagonist Ray Garrett and a bunch of people trapped within a supermarket by what seems like cannibals, and desperately looking for a way out before they become food themselves.

It is kind of a cross between Stephen King's "The Mist" and "30 Days of Night".

It initially read as something I have seen countless times before in other horror books/movies. That is until the unexpected thought-provoking ending which blew me away.

I also thoroughly enjoy Michael Bray's very simplistic straight-forward writing style.

Prime cut!

Whoa! I loved this ! Great idea for a story and filled with suspense from beginning to end.
Nicu and his people were terrifying and I don't think I will ever be able to walk through a supermarket at night again without looking over my shoulder. I really loved the ending too. I have to admit it caught me by surprise and I would definitely like to know if Garrett made it to freedom. Good one Michael Bray!

Gory fun to the extent you're fairly desensitised by the tenth gaping torso description. Nice character work - reminds me somewhat of the Mist by Stephen King. As Stronger, more interesting female characters really would have lifted this and shown a variety in the multiple points of view. Some very Pulpy mash here, and I'll always enjoy a horrific supermarket story.
