4 - "Love settles a persons heart." Stars!

A superbly eclectic and diverse collection, offering sweet, sexy, ghostly and thoroughly entertaining reads, with something to suit all tastes and penchants. I enjoyed each and every one of the novellas contained in this collection.

To write a review for each story would be wasteful of your time, and I can only encourage you too go and one click this absolutely stunning collection and spend that time reading it for yourself. I would happily pay £0.99/$0.99 for one story, let alone all of the books in this release.

This is the absolute best collection of historical romances I've ever read! The seven romances range from sweet to steamy and every one held me entranced from the first page to the last. If it weren't for the busy holidays I would've finished it long ago; but I've been able to read the collection in bits every evening for the past three weeks and savor each wonderful love story. I can't say enough good things about the seven authors' writing styles. I believe anyone who purchases this collection will find new stories to love by authors they already know, and stories by new authors that will have them wanting more books from those same authors. In short, I believe this will be to most readers a collection that bears repeat reading, especially during the holiday season.

I was given an ARC copy of the collection in return for an honest review.

Jane is devastated that John asks for help wooing rich & perfect Sarah, but does help. Can Jane snag her 1 true love? Will John open his eyes & actually Jane ad a prize? This is my 1st Ms. Bolen read & it was a sweet tale, with great loveable characters, put in a terrible web, but the pure acceptance warmed my old ticker. Now this was a squeaky clean romance, but it work & Ms. Bolen gets my score of 3 fingers up & 6 toes for twisty tale!

Ms. Evans wrote such a great lost love tale, mixed it up with lies, sprinkled with devastating discoveries, turned up the heat with smoldering, tantalizing & pantie scorching goodness & it was cocked to perfection. So this quickie by Ms. Evans was packed with delicious revenge, deceit, intrigue & PULL THE FIRE ALARM DECADENTNESS, so it gets my top score of 5 toes up & 10 toes!

There was some PG rated moves, but it did work for this holiday quickie & so Ms. Cameron gets my score of 5 fingers up & 6 toes!

This is my 1st romance by Ms. Vella & I must say that she used many of my fav elements in a tale, HILARIOUSNESS, Fairy Godfolks-in-training & STEAMY YUMMINESS. I loved this quickie & will be gobbling up as many Wendy Vella's romances that I can get my greedy hands, so I must give Ms. Vella my top score of 5 fingers up & 10 toes for this quickie with a loving & troublemaking mayhem filled romance!

Novellas

I am not a huge fan of short HR stories in general, but this is a good collection. I added some books by a couple of the authors to my list of books to read. I recommend reading during December as there are multiple stories set during Christmas.

A more complete review is coming but let me say there is something in this collection for everyone!

From the chaste Miss Fairfeather (who doesn't have a feather to fly) to the adventurous and NOT shy Contessa Orsini,
the intelligent and independent Miss Hero Appleby and even a ghost (Lady Ballister) and Mrs. White, these strong women will all capture your admiration.

The men come in all shapes, sizes and personalities too.

Prepare to settle in for a challenging cast of characters and plotlines that will reveal to you the lifestyles secrets of the ton.

This is by far one of the best historical anthologies I've read. It includes sweet to the more steamy romance but they are all very well crafted and especially unique in their own way. Each author voices their own piece through and at the end of it all romance is the after taste that you are left with. The reader may feel some stories are better than others however the set as a whole deserves the 5 stars I'm giving it because it truly granted me that feeling of being taken to another place and time and because at the end of each story I just had to start the next one. I had only read works from two of the authors but I'll definitely be reading more from the others.

His Lordship’s Vow by Cheryl Bolen - Lord Slade must honor a vow but in doing so may have to put aside his growing feeling for the somewhat pretty but plain and extremely lean figured Ms. Featherstone. I swear, every time she was called plain I felt a punch to my own ego. This is one of the few stories I recall show an extremely intelligent but slighted heroine, not so much because she was plain but because she didn’t have much to her name. I liked that about her. She knew her circumstances and yet she was making the best of them, as I’m sure many woman of the time had to. I mean no offense to any Austen fans but I can imagine Ms. Jane imagining a story like this one ;)

To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone by Bronwen Evans - This is one that made me want to slap the hero I don’t know how many times throughout the book. He was so crass and rude to the poor heroine! However he had very good reasons. He thought she had run away with another rich man when they were younger so when she approached him with a proposal, that is, the famous wager, he intended to take advantage of the situation and of her as much as he could. That would be his revenge on her. Little did he know things were not what they appeared (of course, as that’s the twist) and many new secrets are discovered. The beginning was not much to my liking but as I continued reading and their story developed, I could feel the chemistry between them settling, and finally started feeling for them and what they had to go through in the past. There were a few things that made me raise an eyebrow regarding the plot and the heroine’s actions but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of the heart of the story.

The Christmas Knot by Barbara Monajem - Another second chance story but this one with a different twist. I’m even going to call it a Gothic story with a comic relief, that of being the ghost. I don’t know if the ghost is supposed to be funny but there are a couple of instances that she actually makes me laugh. Widowed Mrs. White seeks work as a governess in a house that is in shambles, haunted by a ghost, under a curse, and what’s worst, her new employer is the only man she’s ever loved but didn't marry because of a misunderstanding. The story takes us through a maze of suspense and clues in order to lift the curse and save someone’s life. Not only that, but Edwina finds out that she never stopped loving Sir Richard, her employer, and will do anything to make him happy, even if that means leaving. Sir Richard seems so brooding and cold but it’s also so understandable given what he’s going through. I liked both of them, their interaction and how their relationship grew.

Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron - Falcon is the kind of hero you feel and fall for right away. He’s too flawed both emotionally and physically because of what he thinks were his failings during his time as a soldier and now he thinks he’s not worthy of Ivonne’s love. Ivonne is in a dire situation where he must choose a man to marry or The Prince Regent will choose one for her and the candidate is a man she detests. Her heart belongs to Falcon, as it always has but she now has to convince him that regardless of his looks and financial situation she will still have him. Ivonne’s naïveté and innocence had me laughing most of the time, especially when she was with Falcon. She tries to be a “woman” and seeks for help but it seems no one around her wants or is there to help her! And then that same innocence makes Falcon believe she was just trying to satisfy her curiosity. For shame! Men of all eras can be so stupid. LOL Flawed or not, one of my favorite heroes ;)

The Duelist’s Seduction by Lauren Smith - Ms. Helen Banks dresses herself as her twin brother in order to save his life. The morning of the duel she somehow locks him up because she was afraid if he was the one attending the duel and was killed, she’d end up in a workhouse or on the streets. However, once the cold-hearted and offended Mr. Fairfax realizes the ruse, he proposes something unexpected. This one had me confused at the beginning. Helen doesn't want her brother dead because she doesn’t want to end in a brothel or on the streets selling her body but instead agrees to be Mr. Fairfax’s mistress so he can forgive the debt? Supposedly, no one would know about the agreement but she’d know about it, and once her brother found out he’d probably ask for another duel, which would probably had the same outcome as her original fear which in turn would make the whole world know about it. It is explained however that Helen has always been attracted to Fairfax and has a curiosity about his rumored libidinous behavior with the ladies. She accepts hesitantly but exceedingly willingly (?) She wants to know more about pleasure and life before secluding herself to the hardships of life. The plot in itself is really good; it’s just that her actions sounded a little contradictory. As the story progresses, we see another side of Fairfax, a warmer and loving side and we come to find out the reasons of his behavior. I fell in love with the H and h once I got past the beginning, and the romance didn’t feel rushed or forced, it even felt tender at times, as if they had been friends for a long time. One of the steamiest of them all but very well done and I wish I could say more but I’m scared I’d be stepping on spoiler territory and I don’t want to do that!

Christmas Wishes by Wendy Vella - Lovely Christmas story about Hero (that name itself makes me giggle) and Lord Max Caruthers. Hero is in dire need for money to make reparations for her house and to provide for orphans she’s taken under her wing. She’s a maiden with no fortune to her own and her own family has left her destitute. Well, it was that or life as a mistress to her cousin. So she decides to enlist the help of rich and rogue Max who wants nothing more in life than live in debauchery and decadence. He has the money, she needs the money, why not ask him for what he has in loads? Max falls for Hero because even though she is a lady in her manners and way of speaking, she says things as they see them and holds nothing back, and intrigues him even more because thinks the worst of him however called for his help. The children are a great addition to the story, especially dear Owen and Charlotte. I don’t like when couples fall so quickly in love with each other but given that this is a short story I’m going to forgive that and focus that they found their HEA. The story started with a lot of levity but as it developed, more drama enfolded and the story turned a bit too dark. Not saying I didn’t like it, just that I’d have loved to see the same arc continue throughout the story.

Miss Watson’s First Scandal by Heather Boyd -For some reason I found this one the quickest read of them and the funniest as well. Perhaps it was because our hero, David Hawke, was supposed to be all reserved and goody two shoes and the last thing he expected was to be seduced by one of his best friend’s now fully grown sister. All he wanted when he got to the town of Brighton was to get some bad business out of the way and then enjoy some well deserved free time. However our heroine Abigail Watson had plans of her own, albeit I don’t think her initial plan was to fall in love with David. To get out of debt, Abigail attempts to make her brother Robert marry a horrible but rich heiress and asks less than ladylike questions to David. David, while trying to secure her reputation, realizes how charming and innocently beautiful Abigail is. However, the big problem remains, how to get tell one of his best friends they are pretty much destitute and at the same time tell him she loves his sister? There were some good twists I didn’t see coming and on the other hand would have like the story a bit longer to explain and give more details as to why things turned out the way they did but as usual as with the rest of the set, that did not demerit the enjoyment of the whole.

Captivated by His Kiss is a compilation of seven historical romances, and there is not a bad one in the bunch. Some stories are sweet and others are steamy, giving the reader a nice mix. There are some older stories so they may have been in other books, but I had not read any of them before. Overall, this is a 4 star book and a must buy for anyone who enjoys regency romance.

His Lordship’s Vow by Cheryl Bolen is a sweet 4 star read. The main characters were all written extremely well and easy to get attached to. I loved almost everything about Jane’s character. She is intelligent, caring, and a strong woman in many ways. There were times when I got tired of her inner-musings about her lack of beauty. Her relationship with Lord Slade was sweet, and it was easy to see they were meant for each other. My only problem with their courtship was that I felt it lacked passion through most of the story.

To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone by Bronwen Evans is a steamy 5 star read. The story flowed nicely and kept me engaged from beginning to end. I liked both Sabine and Marcus’ characters, even when I felt they were making bad decisions. Sabine is strong and in spite of her difficult past still has an innocent side. Marcus, I wasn’t sure about at first, but I warmed to him as the story progressed. The obvious chemistry between Sabine and Marcus is really hot. There was also a bit of mystery to add to the appeal of this story.

The Christmas Knot by Barbara Monajem is a good 4 star read. I was torn when rating this book. In the beginning it felt more like a 3.5 star read, but by the end I felt it deserved 4 stars. The story flowed well and the plot was solid. Edwina, despite being so down on her luck, tried hard to remain positive. The fact that she did not always succeed made her seem more real. I also really loved Richard’s children. Richard, I had trouble connecting with. There were some points where I felt his actions conflicted too much with his thoughts. Still, this is overall a good romance, and I enjoyed watching Richard and Edwina solve a mystery, lift a curse, and find love again.

Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron was a good story that would have been much better if it were longer. There were just too many plot points to tie up in such a short time. I liked Ivy and Chance but didn’t really have enough time to bond with them as a potential couple. This was disappointing because the first scene showed incredible chemistry between them. The author set the stage for an exciting tale where Ivy would try to win Chance, while he believed he was not worthy of her. In the end, their issues were resolved a little too quickly with no real resistance. I gave this one 3.5 stars but think with would have been at least 4.5 stars if it was longer.

Christmas Wishes by Wendy Vella is a sweet 4.5 star read. I really loved Hero. She is compassionate and not afraid to defy convention to care for others. Hero is very distrusting of men and assumes Max is like the others she’s known, selfish and cruel. While their first meeting doesn’t go well, Max soon finds himself fascinated with Hero. It was cute to see how both characters interacted with the orphans and each other. This story moved along nicely and kept me entertained from start to finish.

Miss Watson’s First Scandal by Heather Boyd is a fun 5 star read. I wasn’t sure I liked David at first. He came across as much to stiff and concerned with his job. Then Abigail was thrown into the mix. Where David is proper, Abigail is impulsive. Together these two make a fantastic couple, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading their interactions as they came to the realization that they belonged together. This book does end with somewhat of a cliffhanger obviously teasing the reader with stories to come, but there is a satisfying happily ever after for Abigail and David.

The Duelist’s Seduction by Lauren Smith is a sexy 4.5 star read. I really liked Helen. She is not afraid to risk everything to save her brother, including her life or reputation. While she has an inner-strength that is obvious, she still manages to have a soft and innocent nature. Gareth is brooding and dominant, almost to the point of being completely unlikable in the beginning. I will admit that I wasn’t sure I’d warm up to him. His inner-musings and fascination with Helen seemed creepy at first. While Helen and Gareth falling in love felt rushed, I really enjoyed the chemistry between them. This was a very hot read.

I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

For the time being, I have only read these 2 books, but they are fabulous, and I know all the others will be as well.

TO WAGER THE MARQUIS OF WOLVERSTONE by Bronwen Evans

Ten years after she broke his heart, Miss Sabine Fournier – now the widowed Contessa Orsini – asks Marcus Danvers for his help. Marcus, Marquis of Wolverstone has never stopped loving her but he is dying for revenge because of what she did to him. Sabine needs him to enter a card game and destroy the man who ruined her father, and ultimately caused her parents’ death. Marcus accepts on one condition: that she becomes his lover for as long as he wants her, and she accepts because she will do anything to avenge her parents. TO WAGER THE MARQUIS OF WOLVERSTONE is a long novella with very complex characters, a fabulous heroine: Sabine is strong, determined; I loved her, and Marcus is wonderful as well. The villain is one of the most despicable characters I have ever seen, but he’s also very realistic, which is why he is so appalling. TO WAGER THE MARQUIS OF WOLVERSTONE is action-packed, it’s very intense and dramatic, and very, very well written. A great read!

THE DUELIST’S SEDUCTION by Lauren Smith

Helen Banks’ brother Martin is an incorrigible gambler, and he has contracted a debt of such magnitude, that he is challenged to a duel, because he cannot pay. Helen has decided to take his place, she can shoot as well as he can, and besides she can’t see a future for herself, whereas Martin, being a man, has more opportunities. The man she has to face is Gareth Fairfax. Helen is secretly in love with Gareth, but he never noticed the wallflower that she is.

During the duel, Helen manages to hit Gareth with a bullet, it only grazes him but he bleeds quite a bit. Then he realises his opponent is a woman, and not her brother. But still, Martin’s debt must be paid back, and when Gareth asks Helen to come home with him, she accepts. She is intrigued by the sexy Gareth, even though it might mean ruination. THE DUELIST’S SEDUCTION is a fascinating story, and even though it’s a novella the character development is extremely thorough. The mood is very sensuous, very sensual, and it is of course, superbly written.

I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite story out of this fabulous boxed set. I had the chance to read a lot of new to me authors that I will certainly look for in the future to read again.

I don't usually point out the covers of books unless I truly love them. There is just something about this cover that drew my attention. I knew by the cover I wanted to read this book. It certainly did not let me down. The fact there is a book in here by one of my favorite authors, Heather Boyd, probably had a little something to do with my overwhelming need to read this book.

His Lordship’s Vow by Cheryl Bolen is the first story in the box set. I knew just by reading the first page I was going to love this story. Ms. Bolen drew in my attention and had me captivated with her characters. I instantly liked Miss Jane Featherstone. She is smart, a little quirky in her own way, pretty even though she doesn't know it, and a great cousin. She is assisting her cousin with her coming out season. I loved the closeness between the two cousins and how they interacted together.

Lord Slade is a handsome gentleman that may not be ready to marry yet if he had not made a promise to his father on his deathbed. Lord Slade finds himself in need of a well to do wife. However, he finds that his old friendship with Miss Jane may be more then friendship.

I don't want to tell you to much about this story, I'll let you go grab a copy for yourself and start to enjoy the first of seven awesome historical romances. I will tell you there are plenty of dramatic moments, some really sweet romantic moments, and of course that magical kiss that changes everything.

I would love to read more of Cheryl Bolen's work. She has a way with historical romances that I enjoyed.

To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone by Bronwen Evans is the second story in this boxed set. I had not had a chance to read anything by Bronwen Evans either. So I discovered yet another new to me author that I would like to get to know better.

Marcus Danvers, the Marquis of Wolverstone, had is heart broken when the love of his life went off to marry someone else. He has led a life of bittersweet pleasure. He has been the ultimate playboy and wants nothing to do with settling down. I liked Marcus, because I could see the real him under that mean tough exterior.

When Sabine, now the Countess of Orsini returns home. What I loved about this woman is she sets out to get something she wants and she gets it. She is a tough independent lady and a tigress of a Mom. She is going to do whatever it takes to make sure her son is safe. She does something that puts her in a load of danger but she will do ANYTHING to protect her son.

Neither expects the unexpected attraction they feel instantly. It seems that ten years apart really did not tame down their desires for each other. Marcus feels a great betrayal that Sabine went off to marry someone else all those years ago.

There are so many things that come to light through out this great story. There are a few secrets that are revealed. There is some very dramatic moments that had me holding my breath and holding on to the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and turns that I could not help wondering what was going to happen next.

These two so belong together. I found myself talking to my Kindle. I wanted them to share more of their feelings and the danger Sabine was facing. Once Marcus discovers a few things he hops right in the middle of the problem.

I would certainly love to read more work by the talented Ms.Evans. She's done a great job of writing a historical romance story that certainly did capture my attention and hold on to it through the whole story.

The Christmas Knot by Barbara Monajem is the third story in this boxed set. When I seen the word Christmas I was very excited. As some of you may know I LOVE Christmas stories. I could not wait to get to this story and find a little Christmas Cheer. Oh my did I find interesting Christmas happening in this story line.

Edwina White is desperate. She needs a job as a governess. She spends her last funds to get her to the Grange. Oh boy is she in for a few surprises. It's a good thing thing lady is strong, maybe just a tad bit stubborn, and really needs a job and a place to stay.

First she encounters her ex love, then she meets the two adorable children. Honestly the kids are worth putting up with a lot. She instantly admires the children because they are so well behaved, smart, and kind.

Then well there is the ghost that every talks about. Edwina doesn't believe in ghost until, well until things happen that REALLY make her believe in ghost.

I don't want to tell you too much about this great story. I was captivated from the first page all the way to the end. There is A LOT of drama that kept me gripping my Kindle. The poor thing probably has indented finger marks after this one.

I loved the storyline, I loved the ghost idea, and the characters were all a lot of fun.

Richard is a kind loving man, that has a big heart for his family and his people. He also still has feelings for Edwina. Once again there is the magic kiss that makes them makes them evaluate life. I love how each story has a great kiss. I think with every great relationship there is that first kiss the knocks you off your feet and lets you know this is THE ONE!

Once again I sure would not mind reading more of Barbara Monajem work. I don't think there is an author in this set that I would not love to get to know better and read more of their work. If you are a historical romance fan you are in for a treat with all these great stories :)

Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron is the fourth story in the Captivated by his Kiss Boxed Set. OK this on really was one of my favorites. I loved them all but there is something about this story that really reached out to me.

I loved Ivonne Wimpleton, this woman could care less what society thinks of her. She is feed up with all the jerks that have tried to court her. She wants nothing to do with any of them. One in particular, I'll let you read about that. It's rather funny in some ways.

Chancy Faulkenhurst has always loved Ivy. He went off to try to make a fortune to be worthy of her. When he returns to town he accidental puts her in an awkward position. She is in need of a husband and soon.

I loved watching these two get to know each other again. They have fun together and find there certainly is sparks, some smoldering steam, and some romance. They just have to find a way to be together.

I loved the characters in this book. I wonder if there is any chance it is part of a series. I would love to read more about he other characters, such as Ivy's brother.

There is some drama, a few bits of gossip spread that makes Ivy wonder about Chancy's abilities. She doesn't care though, she loves him anyway.

This was a really great story. I found myself laughing, I had a few tears, and I truly just loved the characters. They were so much fun to read about.

I would not hesitate to read more work by Collette Cameron. I would love to see what other fabulous stories she has written and what she may come up with.

Christmas Wishes by Wendy Vella is the fifth story in the awesome boxed set. This story really touched my heart. I found many of those awe moments that I love to find in a story.

Miss Hero Appleby has taken in children that are in need of a helping hand, food, shelter, and a whole lot of loving care. This lady has one really huge heart and she is ready to share it with any child that may need her. However the one thing she is short on is cash. She needs some help. She goes to see Lord Caruthers for help. She really doesn't think he will help but she needs help.

Oh my goodness watching these two at first is humorous. Oh my can Miss Hero throw around some almost insults in an interesting way.

Lord Caruthers has lead the life of a playboy. However he's done, he doesn't want the running around life anymore, but that doesn't mean he ready to settle down either. I quickly found a great respect for Max. He really is a good guy. I don't want to tell you too much so I'll let you read it for yourself.

There is some drama to this book that left me with tears and quickly flipping pages to see how things were going to work out.

It was great fun to read about Hero, Max, and the children. The children are a real joy in the story and add such a nice touch.

Yet again, I'd love to read more work by Ms. Vella. I have a feeling she has some other great stories out there that I would like to get my hands on. I enjoyed this story and found her writing style to be easy to read with a nice flow.

Miss Watson’s First Scandal by Heather Boyd is one book I have had the chance to read before. Oh my, I sure did not mind reading it again though. I just love Heather Boyd's work. I can NEVER get enough of her fabulous stories! I can't wait until she has time to add on to this series. However I'll take a new book from any of her series because they are all beyond awesome!!

Here is my review: I have been a fan of Heather Boyd's work since the first Wild Randall's series book that I read. So when I found out she had another series coming out, I could not wait to read it. Miss Watson's First Scandal is the first book in the Miss Mayhem novella series. Once again Ms. Boyd has written a wonderful historical romance, with fun characters that each has their own charming distinctive personality.

I just adored Abigail Watson. She is mischievous but also very caring and protective. Abigail sets out to help her brother save their home. She has a plan, but it doesn't really work out.

I liked Abigail's interaction with her best friend Imogene. I think that these two together could get themselves into some mischief but have a lot of fun together.

When David Hawke has to give the Watsons some bad news, he is genuinely upset that he has to give his friends this news, but doesn't really see a way to fix the problem. I admired David for taking it upon himself to deliver the bad news to his friends, rather than allow his partner to delivery the message.

I really enjoyed the romance between David and Abigail. Their friendship is a nice base for a romantic relationship. Neither one is looking for love but unexpectedly find something special together.

Miss Watson's First Scandal is full of romance, a few steamy scenes, some drama, and some laughs. It is a nice short story that I was able to get through in a very short amount of time. Of course I was turning pages quite quickly because I could not wait to see what was going to happen next.

If you are a fan of Heather Boyd I think you will enjoy the start of another fun historical romance series. If you have not read any of Ms. Boyd's work yet, give this one a try, it's a short story that will give you a good sense of her work.

The Duelist’s Seduction by Lauren Smith is the last wonderful story in the set that I loved so much. I have to say I was sad when I reached the last story. I wanted MORE stories to read!

I instantly liked Helen Banks for her love for her family, her loyalty, her braveness, and her guts. This girl gets herself in a situation that really belongs to her brother.

When Gareth Fairfax suggest other way to take care of things, Helen agrees. This is one relationship that gets off to a very interesting start. However these two certainly have no problem with attraction that is steamy and HOT. The more they get to know each other the more feelings they have for one and other. However neither is brave enough to tell of these feelings.

I really liked Helen and Gareth together, no matter how they met, they are great together. They just have to figure out that maybe they can make it work. They have a lot to work through and a few family issues to get through.

I love how the maid of the house quickly took on Helen to make her feel at home. She has hopes that the relationship between Helen and Gareth will work out.

I really liked this story and I loved the interesting way of meeting. There is plenty of drama, a little tension, and that ever wonderful kiss between these two.

This is another new to me author that I sure would not mind reading more of soon!

Overall, this box set is a perfect mixture for the historical romance fan. I know I loved it and I didn't want it to end. I wanted more! Each story has such a nice story. Their each have a really sweet romance, some drama, some unexpected events, a few steamy moments, and those first kisses that are completely captivating.

I was given the opportunity to read this great box set so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Captivated by His Kiss Boxed set.

Go now and grab up this set before it is gone... It's only here for a while and WOW what a bargain!!!!!!

Review of The Christmas Knot by Barbara Monajem

I am never disappointed when I read one of Barbara Monajem’s stories. I love how she gets right into the story and action from the first sentence:

"Wanted: respectable, fearless widow to serve as governess to two children in remote Lancashire location. Spartan conditions, haunted house, fair pay. Inquire at the Duck’s Head, Rawden."

This tells me right away that the poster of the solicitation is either a peculiar person and doesn’t even have a post or he/she only wants a governess understand the reality of the position. It also tells the reader that some delicious paranormal happenings will be part of this story!

Who would be crazy enough or desperate enough to apply for such post? Edwina apparently was. So desperate that even when her new employer was someone she’d rather forget, having known him some 12 years back, she didn’t back down. Edwina was made of sterner stuff and as we find, a whole lot more.

Haunted? Ghosts? How ridiculous a thought, but Edwina, Sir Richard, little John and Lizzie eventually truly believed. Of that the ghost was thankful, for if she were to move this story beyond the first page she had to get them to believe and time was running short. Doesn’t this just capture your imagination?

Barbara Monajem enjoys weaving paranormal into her writing as I love reading it. I’ve enjoyed many of her books and novellas where she adds this spicy ingredient making a Regency Romance more and a memorable read.

1. The Christmas Knot
Plot driven story, with four characters determined to control the pace and out come.
Lovely, gentle, despite a very hands-on ghost and a curse on a family, leading to an incredibly tense holiday season.
The characters are somewhat different than standard. Oh, not the hero, or the heroine! They are normal. The heir despite being out off the immediate line a bit, the governess.
But the secondaries! What a delightful pair of children! Mischievous, loving, disciplined. But worried. Very worried. And that tension is clear in the development of the characters.
The innkeeper - and the cook. And the treasure - seekers!
I also enjoyed the house, and the knot garden. A knot garden is a pleasure on the ground and from above. This book is a pleasure to read, chapter by chapter - and to look back on.
2. His Lordship's Vow
A plot driven story.
Standard fare - young man suddenly made father figure, minimal money and sisters to launch...so he vows to marry the money.
Major difference - attitude of moneyed lady, and and character of lady he loves.
I honestly kept expecting the other shoe to drop - surely the rich girl would turn nasty!
This happily ever after had added benefits...you have to read it to find them.
3. To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone
A reunion between to people who were just short of teen lovers - that somehow feels Romeo and Juliet, despite the lack of familial animosity.
Nearly all of the characters are densely described - this is a story driven by the characters. The villian is unforgivable, his nastiness nearly complete. The hero is heroic and confused, the heroine brave and desperate. There is an abundance of suspense in this sexy half mystery, half romance.

I was captivated by a kiss and more.

Captivated by a kiss was an adventure for me to escape the twenty first century to a time when people didn't have electronic entertainment. Young ladies sang, played musical instruments and spoke many languages. I enjoyed each story as it unfolded I was swept away, I felt I was one of the ladies. Captivated by a kiss is good easy reading.

**** His Lordship's Vow by Cheryl Bolen

It's nice to get back to Regencies for a change--I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed them.

This has a fairly common trope in which the heroine is in love with the hero but agrees to help him woo someone else. What makes it worth reading is that the characters are all well-defined and not simply caricatures.

** To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone by Bronwen Evans

The hero and heroine in this Regency romance were in love and presumably heading toward marriage when Something Happened, separating them for ten years.

Caveat: the Big Misunderstanding is my least favorite of all romance tropes, so I started this book with one strike against it. In its favor, there was some effort made to explain why the heroine didn't want to explain her actions to the hero. However, there's really no excuse for keeping the reader in the dark for so long.

There were some logical difficulties with the story: 1) The whole plot hinges on the hero winning a card game to help the heroine get revenge on the man who ruined her parents, but there's never a question whether he CAN win the game or not, which seemed to me a lost chance to add some real tension. 2)

But for me, the biggest problem with this book was the constant "oooh, I luuuv him/her, but I can't trust him/her" that occurred on every other page. We get it already! The sheer word count devoted to this repetitive, irritating whining could have cleared up all the logical problems and still kept the story at novella-length.

**** The Christmas Knot by Barbara Monajem

I'd call this a Gothic Regency, which combines two genres I really enjoy.

Our heroine is a destitute widow who answers an ad for a governess in a haunted house. Unfortunately, when she arrives, she discovers that the father of the children is the man she was in love with and expecting to marry several years before.

This is a good example of what I was complaining about in the previous novella: Although there is a Big Misunderstanding between them, it's not pounded into our heads on every other page; nor is the sexual tension between them built by having them think about how hot they are for each other. In other words, while I still am not a fan of this trope, Barbara Monajem shows that it can be done well.

As for the ghost story, it's refreshingly done. Both the hero and the heroine are skeptical and logical, yet open to changing their minds. I particularly liked that .

** Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron

Despite having just finished this story, I find myself at a loss to describe it--it was for me, unfortunately forgettable.

Once again, we have a couple that was in love and had been separated. This time, the heroine was too young and the hero, a second son, went off to India to seek his fortune so they could marry.

In the meantime, both of them suffered serious injuries. You might think this would figure into the story's plot, but it really doesn't.

When the story opens, the heroine is being importuned by an odious sea captain. You might think this would figure into the story's plot, but it really doesn't.

The blurb for the story mentions that Prinny himself decrees the heroine must marry, and if she doesn't choose a groom, one will be chosen for her. You might think this would figure into the story's plot, but it really doesn't.

It also mentions that the hero's father had arranged a marriage for him in his absence. You might this this would figure into the story's plot, but it really doesn't.

All these plot points, if explored, could have made this a really engaging story.

In short, this story was all the more disappointing for the unfilled promises.

**** Christmas Wishes by Wendy Vella

Humor! The humor in this story raised it from 3 stars to 4 for me. I admit to being really irritated by a heroine named "Hero." And the logistics of just taking in random orphans, and particularly , even in Regency England, seemed oversimplified.

But the story was written with such good humor that I couldn't help but smile. It's not that there were jokes, or forced funny situations, but simply that the lighter side of things was shown when appropriate.

Plus, the hero and heroine (hero and Hero?) were nicely rounded characters, particularly for a novella. The heroine was devoted to the care of her orphans, but she wasn't the tiresome, self-conscious martyr you might expect. And the hero likewise wasn't the unapologetic, self-indulgent rake you might expect.

I'll look for more by Wendy Vella. I thoroughly enjoyed her voice in this story.

*** Miss Watson’s First Scandal by Heather Boyd

I waffled between 3 and 4 stars on this one.

Our hero is a banker who finds himself in the uncomfortable situation of having to foreclose on a friend and neighbor. Our heroine is that friend's sister. It's an impossible situation, which usually lends itself to a good story.

In this case, though, the story was just too short to do its plot justice. Especially when there are so many sub-plots. To be honest, I'd seek out a full-length novel rewrite, something I normally would frown on.

* The Duelist’s Seduction by Lauren Smith

I hesitated to give this only one star, but I truly couldn't find anything to like about it.

Heroine Helen Banks takes her twin brother's place in a duel, planning to sacrifice her life to save his because. Her brother has gambled away what's left of the family fortune and was challenged to a duel because he didn't pay his debts.

Her opponent in the duel is a man she's in lurrve with because he's so hot, though she's never actually, you know, met him. And of course, once the deception is discovered, her virtue for her brother's debts seems like a great idea.

The rest of the story is lackluster sex scene after self-consciously "hot" sex scene, and the heroine's magic hoo-ha transforms the cynical hero into a caring human being again who instantly falls in love with her. And somehow, those magic sex waves even transform her brother into a responsible person.

Gah. Maybe if I were 12, I'd find this story titillating.

This is an awesome collection of seven historical stories. So far I've read Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron and Christmas Wishes by Wendy Vella.
In Bride of Falcon Ivonne has been in love with Falcon since she was 15 years old. Little did she know that Falcon loved her also, but being protective of her, her father turned down Falcon's marriage proposal request. He told him that if he still loved her and could provide for her in a few years then he could ask for her hand again.
The six years that they went without any communication at all felt like a lifetime to them both during which they had both gone through a lot of living and growing up.
All of that time, lack of communication and hurt feelings did little to stifle their feelings. If anything they were more drawn to one another.

In Christmas Wishes Hero has moved her little brood of children into her family home to take care of. In all intense and purpose she was their Mama since they were all believed to be orphans. She was having a difficult time taking care of them though. She had no family money and no one to help.
She seeks help from Max. Hoping that he will give her money and food, but the day that she seeks to see him in person she finds him under the weather from over indulging the night before and forms an opinion about him right off.
Max has the good sense to take offense and right from the start the very next day shows her and her little brood what a kind and generous man is really like.
Hero had never been able to trust a man, not even the men in her family. They were all about what they could take or get out of a woman so to see Max in a different light was surprising and refreshing.
Max was shocked by how fast those little children and their new Mama got accepted into his heart. He felt protective of them and would do anything possible to keep them safe.

Right now I'm reading His Lordship's Vow and looking forward to reading the rest of this wonderful collection of books.

I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Before I start, I have to say that the first six stories were five stars! The last story was a little to riske for my tastes. So I rated that story a three stars. The average was 4.74 giving the overall rating a 5stars.

Now for all you romance lovers this is the collection you will want to read. Each and every story was so romanticly diverting with a little angst thrown in. And to just to let you know I'm not a prude. There are enough love scenes to satisfy everyone. My problem with the last story was that the story seemed to be centered around the sexual encounters. Just not my thing. I like to connect with the characters and I couldn't seem to. I have to admit that I didn't finish the story.

The scenes of all these stories takes place in and around the recency area England. And this is the perfect collection to read just before Valentine's Day. I highly recommend this collection of stories

good collection of romance novellas

This is a collection of 7 stories costing 1.99 for my Kindle. There are 2 Christmas stories. I particularly enjoyed The Lordship's Vow and Christmas Wishes. Both had predictable story lines but we're heartwarming with witty dialogue on occasion and a good cast of characters.

I also found Miss Watson's First Scandal interesting. Although set as a Regency romance, the same basic story could have been set in the 1970's or today for that matter. It seems unusual in that there were no adults or chaperones. Old friends (brothers and sisters) meet seasonally at the seaside where they spent their youth. Young girls grow up. Older brothers seek wives.

Definitely a variety of stories. Some with only kisses, others much racier.

Dressing like her twin brother to take his place in a duel leads Helen Banks into an even more complicated situation.

Gareth Fairfax has a proposal for Helen. She has a choice…accept the proposal and her brother’s debt to him would be paid in full, thus saving his life.

I enjoyed this book; but then I enjoy all Lauren’s books. Gareth has a past that has made him believe he doesn’t deserve to love again. Both Gareth & Helen struggle through their own doubts as they feel the chemistry between them. It’s a great read as these two people try to keep their feelings hidden. Love can heal if they only had the courage to let it.

I have to be honest and say the first book in the collection was a slow starter for me. It didn't really grab me until the last 3 chapters, but when it did I was sad it was over and left me wishing for more. The rest of the books in the collection grabbed me from the very beginning. I truly enjoyed every one of them. I still struggle a bit understanding the dialogue of the time period but find the stories very fascinating. I hope you find them as engaging as I have. I received an ARC of this boxed set in exchange for my honest review, which in no way influenced my opinion of the books.

A Great Introduction to Seven Authors

I am a great fan of Regency romances but hadn't previously encountered these authors. Each story is relatively short (think novella) but lovely all the same. I would especially recommend this to anyone who wants to find new authors to read. Those samples are useful, but I prefer seeing how an author finishes her story, not just how she starts it.
