Two novellas from two of my favourite authors. I was excited to read this even if it was featured characters caught in avalanches (that evil white stuff).

Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey features a wedding party that goes heli-skiing (are they crazy?), and get caught up in an avalanche. They find shelter at an old lodge, but the danger isn't over. One of the party members has been dealing with a stalker and thought they left the stalker back at their home, but it looks like they are much closer than thought. Could it be someone in the group and if so, who? A few deaths occur while they are to figure it out. There were quite a few characters so options were open and I was kept guessing.

Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason features Maya who has come to a lodge to get away and make plans for the retreat she wants to start. An avalanche traps her and after a few incidents it appears someone is trying to kill her and use the avalanche to their advantage. Who and why? I figured out the who pretty quickly, but not the why. There is a romance that blooms between two old friends and I was rooting for it the whole time.

Out of the two stories my favourite was Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey, mainly because it kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat. But both were very enjoyable. (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)

These are two novellas by two of my all time favorite Christian suspense authors. Both author are auto buys for me as I also re listen to their books. These authors are consistent and always please me. I will say, personally I prefer full length books instead of novellas. Lovely faith content, not overpowering. The narration was good. Highly recommend.

I was blessed with an ALC. Thank you RBmedia and NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.

Eason & Pettrey deliver power punched novellas that take danger, suspense, and drama to the next level. Whiteout opens with Dani Pettrey’s Buried in the Shadows that captures you within minutes with the intense danger on the opening pages. It is a thriller that keeps you guessing who is behind the danger with all the different twists and characters as well as having you looking over your shoulder to check the shadows. This story had my heart pounding and my full attention.

With my mind reeling, I jumped into Lynette Eason’s Snowbound Secrets. This story matches Pettrey in intense danger and suspense just located on the other side of the avalanche at the lodge. Dr. Maya Sullivan finds herself in the middle of the danger while she helps victims of the avalanche and inadvertently discovers her childhood friends are also at the lodge. Danger lurks at every turn making you guess when the danger is coming and why. It captures your heart with bringing to light challenges many veterans face while also entertaining you as you try to figure out the puzzle of never ending danger.

These two novellas combine to make a phenomenal read! Each one explores the danger separate friend groups are experiencing on opposite sides of the avalanche. Once you start, it is difficult to put down and stays with you after the last page is turned with the excellent characters and storylines in each book. It is a must read!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Whiteout by two really great authors. Dani Pettrey & Lynette Eason. The 1st book in this is Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey, I’ve only ever read one book by Dani and have to say man, I’ve been missing out. Even though these were shorter books I read this in one sitting because I just had to find out who the bad guy(s) were?! I had an idea who I thought it could be surprised and for what reasons.

Next book was Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason. Which I read this book in one sitting too! Anything by Lynette Eason I always read in one sitting. She captures right in. I love how each story had their own mystery and intrigue but based out of the same Colorado mountains with an avalanche. It made me think was these two stories just connected but with different characters in each book.

I received this book from the publisher and was not required to leave a review. All opinions are my own.

Wow. What an incredible read. Whiteout is 2 romantic suspense novellas in 1. Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey follows Cassie, who has a stalker. What she didn't tell her Joel, ex-fiancé, was that her stalker had threatened his life. Now they are together for Joel's sister's 4-day wedding party at a resort, but Cassie's stalker has followed her there. Buried in the Shadows has an avalanche, the wedding group seeking shelter from the wintry elements and wolves, a stalker, and murders. Who is Cassie's stalker, and can she and Joel have a second chance at love? This story kept me guessing and had a couple of surprises.
Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason is fast-paced and centers on Maya who is being targeted by someone. This story has plenty of action and danger. I did suspect who was behind it but didn't suspect their true motive. Eason added twists and turns in Snowbound Secrets.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for the e-ARC and physical copy of Whiteout by Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey. All opinions are my own.

Whiteout is made up of two novellas set in the same snowed in Colorado ski resort. While they follow different characters, events from the first novella are briefly mentioned in the second novella. I think you could easily read them in any order though.

Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey is the first novella and follows a group of friends on a skiing trip before a wedding. Unfortunately, things start to go south for them when an avalanche hits and traps them in an abandoned lodge.

I enjoyed this first story, but it leaned more to the thriller side than suspense. I found it just a bit too creepy at times, so it wasn’t my favorite type of story. This was my first time reading this author’s writing, so I’m not sure if this is typical of her stories or not.

I liked not knowing who could be trusted, and I wasn’t able to guess the outcome. I wish there had been more to the romance because it didn’t feel like much happened to get the characters back together.

The second novella, Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason was more my style of romantic suspense.

This story followed a different group of people trapped in another lodge after the avalanche.

I enjoyed the tone of this book more because it felt more suspenseful and less creepy. I have found this to be true of all the books I’ve read by this author’s so far, and I’m definitely interested in more books with these characters.

The romance in this second novella was much more enjoyable. It was sweet, and I felt like there was more build-up to it.

Overall, I would recommend this book because it contains two quick and easy to read stories with danger, romance, and a snowy Colorado setting.

What could be creepier than being stuck on a mountain during an avalanche with a killer on the loose?

Whiteout brings you two stories connected by a dangerous avalanche. In Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey, a ski party goes awry when everyone is trapped. Cassandra Parker is now stuck with her ex that she left at the altar...but a the killer is trapped with them. Which means the killer is someone they all know.

In Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason, Maya Sullivan faces her past when her high school crush steps up to protect her from a killer.

I love stories where characters are trapped. Nowhere to go, but the danger runs high. Fast-paced and intense, both of these stories had me on the edge of my seat. I received a review copy of the audiobook, and the narrator did a good job of matching the intensity of the story. I recommend the audio book for total immersion!

Such a great book from two of my favorite authors! I love how they each did a story that took place in the same area and then put them together in this book.
Both kept me in suspense wanting to know what was going to happen next.

Completed: Jan. 30/26
Format: audiobook (ARC)
Narrator: Natalia Payne - okay

Challenge Prompt: BR’s Olympic Bingo, “snow on the cover or the book has a snowy scene” — both

Book #7 of 2025: Both stories have high suspense with some romance. I enjoyed both of them equally.

The first novella is the Dani Pettrey contribution, Buried in Shadows. There is a second chance love story, a determined stalker, and a pre-wedding get-together amongst friends at a ski resort. Oh, and throw in an avalanche for good measure. Is the threat closer than she had ever imagined?

This is a high octane story with the mystery of the shadow stalker’s identity. People are dropping like flies! I always enjoy a second chance love story. I did not enjoy some of the voices used by the narrator. There is also a serious lack of shock and terror in certain scenes. I found that frustrating. The novella deserves a stronger reading. It is an exciting story that keeps you guessing.

The other novella is by Lynette Eason and is titled, Snowbound Secrets. Maya, former military living with PTSD, wants to develop a ranch retreat for former military vets. Unfortunately, due to an avalanche, she cannot leave the ski resort she is at. She meets up with a long ago crush at the resort. Both have some heavy loads and are battling their past mistakes. They’re thrown together when Maya’s life is threatened. Difficult memories surface for both but there is also a mutual attraction.

For me, this novella has a deeper story with the military & PTSD elements. The tunnel aspect is really interesting. The narrator did a better job with this novella.

I definitely recommend this book with double the romantic suspense!

This is a book that consists of two romantic suspense novellas. In my excitement over finding trapped in stories involving snow, my favorite trope, I missed the part of it being Christian as well. But, to be honest it felt like the Christian part was an after thought. So if you're grabbing this for that reason, you might be disappointed. The suspense aspect of the books was great and pretty much my entire rating is in regards to that. The romantic part seemed off. Maybe it was just rushed due to it being a novella, but regardless it just seemed immature. Almost like it was written by someone who had never had an mature, adult, relationship before. Someone who thought they knew what was love was. So unfortunately that aspect was a miss for me. But I was very intrigued by the storyline in both novellas and enjoyed the fast paced action.

Whiteout was an amazing book! Two stories in one. And each of them so very exciting.
Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey, Cassie Parker arrives at her best friend's wedding, hoping & praying her stalker hasn't tracked her back to Colorado. Her ex-fiancé, Sheriff Joel Brunswick, the man she’d left at the altar to protect him from threats to his life by the stalker is also. When an avalanche strands them all in an abandoned lodge, it becomes clear that Cassie's stalker has followed her and doesn’t care who he kills to make her only his.
This story was a real page-turner and the stalker’s identity at the end blew me away!
In Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason, Dr. Maya Sullivan is trying to escape her past and finish planning a retreat for veterans of the military at the ranch she's inherited from her Grandpa. But her plans go wrong when an avalanche traps her in a Colorado ski resort. When she is attacked by someone in a mask, she’s rescued by her high school crush, Gideon Price, but they soon realize someone is targeting her, and also Gideon it’s a matter of life or death as they try to figure out who is after them.
The end of this story was a total shocker. And this book was so exciting and a real page turner for me.

In true Dani Pettrey fashion, she threw her characters straight into peril. Haha! It’s a strategy guaranteed to draw me in though and then I have to keep reading until I reach the end. This was no exception to that. I’ve read the series this one is connected to and it was great getting a bit of Joel’s story!

Lynette Eason writes some of the best novellas. I haven’t read the series this one is connected to (yet!) and I had no trouble following along. I never feel gypped with her novellas, the story is always well-rounded and complete on its own. I really enjoyed these characters and their history. I’m curious to see how they connect to her series (I’m assuming they do).

This book is two novellas in one. I listened to the audiobook for each, the narrators were very good. Both stories were entertaining and suspenseful! Each story had an avalanche but the rest was unique to each novella. The first story was a bit too much suspense for me, but it was written really, really well. I definitely got scary vibes but with faith content too! The second story was slightly more enjoyable for me. It was still suspenseful, but more my personal speed. In this book I felt more engaged with the characters. 4 ⭐️ read

Whiteout: Two Romantic Suspense Novellas by Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey is a fantastic book. Often, when you pick up a book of novellas, it is not high quality or only one story shines among the rest. This book is a big exception. Here, both authors shine equally and write stories so well developed yet concise enough to fit the short form. I loved both stories so much and loved them even more because of how they related to each other. I could not recommend this book more. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

Whiteout is a great winter read of two novellas. Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey pulled me in, and I read it in one sitting. The next night, I read all of Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason. Each story has a mystery and an urgent need to find out who the bad guy (or girl!) is. I can't wait to get a physical copy of this book when it releases!

I always read Dani Pettrey and Lynette Eason's books as soon as they're released and I'm so excited that I was able to get my hands on this book early. Both authors bring their own signature brand of suspense that leaves you guessing the entire time as you try to figure out what's going on. I loved that both novellas were set on the same mountain (just opposite sides). I was quite shocked at just how many characters one of the authors managed to kill off in such a (relatively) short number of pages (not saying which author or which characters though).
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants some suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat with your nose stuck in the book.

** “Give me the strength I don’t possess. I need Your strength. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” **

Authors Dani Pettrey and Lynette Eason join forces to bring us “Whiteout,” a book featuring two action-packed novellas set during an avalanche.

In Pettrey’s “Buried in Shadows,” Cassie Parker is joining her friends Izzy Brunswick and Talbot Wentworth for a snow- and fun-filled wedding weekend. But things go horribly wrong when they’re overcome by an avalanche while out skiing and snowboarding.

They will need to find shelter to survive the oncoming blizzard. But what they don’t realize is they’re fighting something even more deadly: the person who has been stalking and threatening Cassie for the past year.

Will they survive? Will they figure out who the evil person is?

Pettrey does an incredible job of creating an intense thriller with an almost closed door mystery feel to it. She creates intriguing characters, but since it’s a shorter story we don’t really get to dive deeply into them. She also fills “Buried in Shadows” with some good themes, like finding refuge and strength in God; sometimes we just need to “be still”; and trust God always.

Eason’s “Snowbound Secrets” continues on the other side of the mountain, where the Silver Pines Ski Resort finds itself trapped by the avalanche’s snow and ice.

Dr. Maya Sullivan, a trauma surgeon, is spending time at the resort to re-evaluate her life and some choices she needs to make. But it quickly becomes apparent someone is targeting her, and she has no idea why. She seeks help from her childhood friend, Gideon Price, who is also spending some reflective time at the resort until they all become snowed in.

Can they work together to figure out who is targeting Maya, and why? And will they be able to overcome their past traumas and open themselves to a potential relationship?

As always, Eason creates an intense thriller with just enough romance to get your heart pumping. She creates characters with very real and relatable flaws. Highlighting PTSD and how we don’t always acknowledge it enough, she also fills “Snowbound Secrets” with several great themes, like every good gift comes from God; overcoming shame; there are no coincidences; dealing with our baggage and asking others, and God, for help; the ugliness of greed; and the fear of losing those we love.

Fans of Kelly Irvin, Terri Blackstock, Irene Hannon and Elizabeth Goddard, as well as those looking for a cleaner version of Ruth Ware’s novels, will love “Whiteout,” which is due out Feb. 3.

Five stars out of five.

Whiteout is two excellent suspense novellas from two favorite authors put into one book! The novellas are connected only that they take place at the same time at the same ski resort during and after an avalanche.

4⭐️ Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey
This novella is linked in with Pettrey’s Jeopardy Falls series and sheriff Joel and medical examiner Cassie are the MCs. I definitely enjoyed this twisty story of the bridal party for Joel’s sister Izzy being caught in the avalanche and stranded in the old lodge, little knowing the stalker who has been tormenting Cassie and driving her away from Joel is closer than any of them ever realized. Once the action started it was hard to put down. This is a twisty mystery with lots of Clue vibes! I appreciated Cassie being brave and recognizing her mistakes and letting Joel in. I also appreciated how Joel was able to show such forgiveness.

My one struggle with the story was keeping track of all the characters! It took away from my enjoyment just a little bit because I was struggling to remember who everyone was and what everyone’s name was and what their relationships were. In hindsight, what I should have done was copy the wedding invitation at the beginning of the novella onto a piece of paper to have next to me while I was reading (because I was reading an ebook and couldn’t just flip back for reference). That would have helped me SO much!

4.5⭐️ Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason
This novella kicks off Eason’s brand new series Soldiers in Shadows (book 1 releasing August 2026) by introducing us to Maya, owner of the soon-to-be veteran’s trauma recovery ranch where the coming series will take place, and Gideon, a fellow veteran and Maya’s childhood friend. The same avalanche has trapped everyone at the resort, but some shenanigans are happening- cell and wifi is down from the avalanche, but the landlines aren’t working, the sat phones are missing, and there’s no escape routes. Someone keeps sabotaging Maya- and Gideon isn’t about to let anything happen to her, especially not after they’ve had this opportunity to reconnect.

I loved the layers to this story. I definitely fell for the red herring in this one. There’s some great action and a good mystery. There’s also a lot of nice character development for a novella, as Gideon especially works through some things that allows him to open up to Maya and work through his issues with the Lord.

Both books had excellent faith threads and did not feel as rushed as novellas sometimes do, Eason’s especially. Both romances felt believable due to past history between the MCs in both stories.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are my own.

This is an interesting book. It includes two Christian romantic suspense novellas and here is the interesting part: there is an avalanche in the book and both books are tied to it - but contain completely different people and dangerous situations.

Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Wow. If you’re looking for nonstop action and heart pounding suspense, this Christian romantic suspense novella definitely delivers. A year ago Cassie left her fiancé at the alter because a stalker threatened his life. Now, she’s seeing him again for the first time at her best friend’s wedding party because Joel is her brother. Starting with heli-skiing gone wrong, nothing goes right for their wedding party group as they face the elements, wildlife, and a killer in their midst. This definitely felt like a Clue murder mystery as another shoe kept dropping. Twists and turns right up until the end and I guessed wrong at first. I would’ve loved to read this book as a novel with more detail being added with a slightly slower pace. It was a really good read. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Content warning: on page murder, high stakes situations

Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a good Christian romantic suspense. It was slower paced than the first book and lent to more character development with the whole childhood friends angle but then both having issues to work though. They both came to this resort to sort things out. Gideon is feeling shame over actions in his past and Maya is dealing with nightmares from loss in her past. Both were in the armed services. It was interesting trying to piece together where the danger was coming from and why. The romance in this book is just kisses, intimacy level 1.

Content warning: attempted murder

Whiteout is a compilation of two modern day Christian romantic suspense novellas. Both stories are well written and easy to read and enjoy. The stories take place as an avalanche covers a ski resort. They are both filled with action and suspense with rekindled romance.
Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey focuses on Cassie as she attends the wedding party for her friend Izzy at the Silver Pines, Colorado ski village. The group is out skiing when the avalanche happens and they shelter in the old abandoned resort building. The threatening notes have restarted and now people are turning up dead. Her former fiance, Joel, is part of the group and she has to face him and admit to him why she did not marry him.
Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason is about Dr Maya Sullivan and her teenage crush and friend, Gideon. After the avalanche happens, she is called on to set up a temporary medication station by the ski resort lodge. While working there she gets reacquainted with Gideon. Weird things start happening and she is kidnapped by another teen friend’s wife. What she is not aware of is that the farm she has inherited belonged to this friends family. The three friends all served in the Army in Afghanistan but did not see her.
These are interesting stories to read. I enjoyed the suspense and mystery with who was causing the trouble for Cassie and Maya. I also enjoyed how each of them is given a second chance to be with the man they love. I like how Cassie was willing to give up her happiness to keep Joel safe. I especially enjoyed how Maya wants to take the ranch and turn it into a place of refuge for those with PTSD. I enjoyed how devoted Gideon is to keeping her safe.

Two chilling romantic suspense novellas by two bestselling authors? Woo-hoo! Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey have captured our attention and hearts with seat-of-the-pants suspense for years. In WHITEOUT, the ladies have given us novellas jampacked with action, romance, mystery, and faith journeys that inspire.

BURIED IN SHADOWS Story:
In BURIED IN SHADOWS by Dani Pettrey, Cassandra Parker arrives at her best friend's destination wedding, anxious that her relentless stalker might have tracked her all the way to the snow-draped slopes of Colorado. Sheriff Joel Brunswick is also part of the wedding party—the man she left at the altar to conceal a dangerous truth, a secret that could put everyone she loves at risk. Their ski group sets off into the mountains, but suddenly, the thunderous roar of an avalanche tears through the serene landscape. But the avalanche is only the beginning of a dangerous journey.

SNOWBOUND SECRETS Story: In SNOWBOUND SECRETS by Lynette Eason, veteran Dr. Maya Sullivan escapes to her childhood vacation spot—a Colorado ski resort—to finish planning a retreat for military veterans at the ranch she's inherited. Unfortunately, her plans go sideways when an avalanche traps everyone behind a wall of snow and ice. An unexpected reunion with her childhood crush forces her to confront past wounds, but she soon realizes someone is targeting her, and their search for a shadowy enemy becomes a matter of life and death.

BURIED IN SHADOWS—4.5 STARS because: with nods to THE SHINING, Pettrey gives a nonstop, pulse-raising thriller that kept me glued to my chair until the satisfying end.

SNOWBOUND SECRETS—4.5 STARS because: Eason’s story had a strong faith journey that wasn’t an intermittent flurry, but a full, yet organic faith filled suspense and romance.

Two exceptional romantic suspense authors join forces to deliver edge-of-your-seat reads guaranteed to keep the pages turning. Both novellas feature a closed-circle mystery which makes the suspense all the more thrilling. No one can get in and no one can get out…and that means the killer walks among them! Spine-chilling delight!

Be prepared for eerie stalker vibes galore in Dani Pettrey’s ‘Buried in the Shadows’. Shiver — very appropriate title by the way. A second chance romance featuring an almost bride who left her groom at the altar! Gasp! But she had a very good reason. One year later and family/friend obligations have them reunited…and stalked by a killer in avalanche country. Pettrey takes the whole stranded in the wilderness and fighting the elements tropes to a whole other level in this taut, sometimes creepy suspense. Includes brief, chilling villain POV that slowly becomes more revealing until the breath-snatching climax.

In Lynette Eason’s ‘Snowbound Secrets’, teenaged friends meet years later under unlikely circumstances. Both Maya and Gideon are seeking respite at a remote ski resort when their best laid plans are upended by a catastrophic avalanche. This friends to more romance is fraught with tension and plenty of action. Someone has targeted Maya and as the attacks intensify, the two grow closer as they look for answers…and a way to escape! Lovely emotional depth and expert pacing made this novella a consume in one sitting kind of read.

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition of ‘Whiteout’ narrated by Natalia Payne who did a wonderful job delivering all that tension and emotion which made for a thrilling listening experience.

My thanks to RB Media and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.

Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey was an intense mountaintop ski adventure with plenty of suspense. When a wedding party goes heli-skiing on an untouched side of the mountain, a stalker with deadly intent follows Cassie and her ex-fiance Joel. An avalanche and trying to outsmart the murderer and stormy conditions made the plot fast-paced. The villain, who had a first person voice in the story, was difficult to guess. I wish it had been a full-length novel; that way, I could have gotten to know Cassie and Joel better. There were many characters in the wedding party so it was difficult to keep them all straight, especially when murders started happening. It was an enjoyable story overall, though I did get confused at times when backstories among the characters of the wedding party left me feeling like I missed something.

Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason took place at the same ski resort as the first novella but followed Maya and Gideon, stranded at the resort after the avalanche. Childhood friends with crushes on each other, unbeknownst to the other party, Maya and Gideon take their time getting to know each other again until someone tries to kill Maya and that accelerates their relationship. Maya and Gideon were army veterans and battled PTSD throughout the story. They both had emotional baggage which seemed a bit too deep and intense to fully flesh out in a novella. The dialogue felt somewhat stilted and their heart-to-heart sharing sounded more like detached factual recounting of traumatic events than true emotional connection. The villain was easy to spot but the reasoning behind the attempted murders was a surprise.

This is two novellas under one cover, which consists of one novella from Dani Pettrey and the other one from Lynette Eason. These two snowbound stories are both set at a ski resort which has no contact with the outside world for a time.

In Buried In Shadows by Dani Pettrey a wedding party ends up trapped in an old ski lodge after an avalanche has cut them off from the resort. Cassandra Parker left the love of her life (Sheriff Joel Brunswick) at the altar some time ago. She now has to face him. She is still reeling from a stalker who has destroyed her life. Now it seems her stalker has followed her to the wedding, which means that her stalker is someone she calls a friend.

This was like playing the game of Clue because you knew it was one of them, but you had to work through the weeds and clues to identify the killer, and even then I was shocked. The second chance romance between Cassandra and Joel was a wonderful addition to the story.

In Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason, Dr. Maya Sullivan is at the resort for a break, and she wants to take time to contemplate her future. The avalanche has destroyed her time of rest as she is having to help with medical assistance at the ski resort. When she is attacked by a masked man, she is rescued by Gideon Price, a blast from her past.

It soon becomes apparent that she has a target on her back for some unknown reason. Eason takes you on a journey filled with danger and intrigue, as well as a second chance romance all the way to a thrilling conclusion that was spine tingling and disturbing.

I flew through the pages of both stories in a day, as I was fully invested in each story from the beginning pages.

Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Two fantastic snowbound adventures by two of my favourite authors.

If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, novellas, forced proximity, second chance romance with military/law enforcement heroes, and a fight for survival, you’ll enjoy these two fantastic novellas set at a ski village in Silver Pines, Colorado.

In Buried Shadows by Dani Pettrey, autopsy assistant Cassie Parker has arrived back at Silver Pines still brokenhearted a year after leaving her fiancé, Sheriff Joel Brunskwick, at the altar. Cassie’s happiness at being here for her friend’s destination wedding is soon overtaken by fear as she discovers that her stalker has followed her. I loved the ‘locked room’ aspect and the idea that the killer could be one of the guests. It didn’t take long to get swept up in guessing the villain. I gasped and yelled at the characters’ choices, totally involved in a great murder mystery. Great twists, great pacing, and great characters.

In Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason, trauma surgeon Dr. Maya Sullivan is enjoying some downtime at Silver Pines resort before she takes on the daunting task of planning a retreat for military veterans. When an avalanche occurs, she’s trapped at the resort and discovers, like Cassie, that she’s forced to spend time with her high school crush, Gideon Price. Eason’s narrative is also pacey, involves a killer/stalker, and explores how the weight of emotional baggage (PTSD) adds to a traumatic experience. I was surprised by the twist (motive)!

These represent snowbound survival at its finest. I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Whiteout is made up of two romantic suspense novellas: Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey and Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason. Both settings are at a ski resort impacted by an avalanche, cutting the protagonists off from outside help.

Buried in Shadows had me engrossed from the first page. Waking up to the possibility of an intruder in one's home is many women's worst nightmare. Knowing it may signal the return of one's stalker compounds the terror. The story continues with many more hooks to hold readers captive: a lost love, adrenaline pumping adventure, an avalanche, dangerous wild animals, an abandoned lodge with secret passages, and a killer on the loose. The only thing missing from this story is more of it. When the ending abruptly arrives, the readers just aren't ready to let the characters go.

Snowbound Secrets begins with three friends who had lost touch after high school and joining the military unexpectedly finding themselves all back at a ski resort they had enjoyed together in their youth. Stranded with other guests following an avalanche, Dr. Maya Sullivan is unable to put any distance between herself and the unknown person who seems intent on killing her. This story also holds readers' attention immediately and consistently with its second chance on love trope, secrets revealed, murder attempted, and old tunnels discovered. This story has a bit more real estate in the book and comes to a satisfying ending.

I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Whiteout from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Having enjoyed Pettrey's Alaska series, I was looking forward to her story in this book, but I was disappointed. One issue was the occasional error in word choice and/or the sequence of a scene. Take, for example, the scene in which Joel finds Cassie in the snow:

"He'd found her, but was he in time...

Scrambling to shovel her out without hurting her, he worked fast but with deftness. Iz and Talbot joined him, then Scott and Heath, all working to shovel Cassie out...

What was that? He narrowed his eyes. A glimmer of color flashed before them, then vanished. He knelt, digging with his hands until a patch of blue appeared. Cassie's snowsuit. 'She's here!'"

First of all, why use the conjunction "but" between "fast" and "with deftness?" Being quick does not negate being skilled or vice versa. In fact, I would argue that the most deft shoveler, in this case, would be both quick and effective.

More perplexing in this scene, however, was Joel's apparent confusion at seeing Cassie's snowsuit in the area in which he and four others were digging. We already knew that Joel had found Cassie. Pettrey explicitly stated so at the start of the scene. Also, clearly, the four others with him also thought that she was there; therefore, Joel did not need to say, "She's here!" after seeing her suit.

The villain(s) are rather easy to identify early on in the story and their motivations and interactions often resembled something out of a B grade horror movie; however, their inner dialogue before murdering their victim(s) is sufficiently creepy if you're reading it alone at home at night. If you're just looking for a quick read, you could certainly do much worse than this book but, in my opinion, it was not as good as Pettrey's earlier works.

"Whiteout" contains 2 Christian romantic suspense novellas. "Buried in Shadows" is almost a horror movie, with a ski group stuck in an abandoned lodge after surviving an avalanche and surrounded by a whiteout snowstorm. Cassandra's stalker is killing people one by one, and her love, Sheriff Joel, is the killer's ultimate target. The killer must be one of their party, made up of close friends and family, but who? Throw in some secret passages and some injuries, and the suspense never stops. The main characters were likable and reacted realistically to events. I am a little confused, though: the killer expected the party to end up at the out-of-the-way lodge, so I assumed he'd caused the avalanche, but no one (in either novella) suspects anything but a natural cause.

"Snowbound Secrets" unexpectedly reunites high school friends, all with some level of PTSD. After the avalanche cuts the main ski lodge off from help, Maya uses her medical skills to help those injured. Only, someone's trying to hurt HER and she doesn't know why. She's an understanding, caring woman, determined to help others heal from their wounds. Gideon vows to keep her safe, but he doesn't feel worthy of her due to his PTSD and some compromising choices he made that cost him his construction business. The two worked well together and shared a vision to help others with PTSD.

There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend these suspenseful novellas.

I received a free ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
