From the bestselling authors of We're Going on a Bar Hunt, comes another hilarious parody of a much-loved children's book.
This time, we follow the quest of one man as he attempts to shake off his hangover, through eating whatever he can get his hands on, and annoying his family in the process.
The perfect book for anyone who fondly remembers the original, but has now grown up and knows all too well just how painful hungover days can be . . .
After a heavy drinking night out one man is facing the hangover from hell that he just can’t shift. After being awoken on the sofa at 7 am, the man tries numerous things to make himself feel better from taking two paracetamol at 7 am, two cups of sweet tea and a phone call to say he’s sick at 8 am, three slices of toast, two fizzy vitamin pills, and a black coffee at 9 am. This is just the start of his day.
He continues eating and drinking to make himself feel better for the rest of the day, but what cures him of his hangover?
In case you hadn’t worked it out, I’m sure you have, this is a parody of the children’s book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. It is amusing and I for one am glad that I’m not a heavy drinker as the man looks in serious pain throughout the day and I don’t know how he managed to eat and drink so much looking for a cure – yuk!!
The story is only short and is filled with fabulous illustrations alongside text that did make me giggle slightly. This is the kind of book you would give as a present and would certainly be a good idea for someone who is used to hangovers. Would also make the perfect Secret Santa Gift.
I don't... I don't know why I read this book. It was sitting on the "new" shelf next to the checkout kiosks at the library, so I grabbed it on a whim because, I dunno, I thought it might be funny? I guess it was, but only because I know that it's literally the same setup as the kids book. It ONLY works as a parody. At least it only took up 45 seconds of my day, I guess. People who actually go through the hangover thing more frequently than once every two years or so (I know, I'm a partier) would probably find it funnier than I did.
The Very Hungover Caterpillar – A Parody – by Josie Lloyd & Emlyn Rees, illustrated by Gillian Johnson – ADULT – Well. This is a hilarious book. Laughed all the way thru. Especially on the page with all the delicious Indian food. Love how it follows the hungry caterpillar pattern but is laughing at the hungover father.
I actually bought this for my husband as a stocking filler for Christmas. Of course, I had to have a cheeky read beforehand, and frankly, I thought I was going to die laughing.
Like many parents I have sat through countless readings of the original version of this classic tale. Our eldest, at 18 months old, could recite the whole thing and used to have us in stitches with her version of the tale.
To say the Very Hungry Caterpillar has a special place is on our heart is a bit of an understatement. Equally, like many parents, I have experienced the torture that is a hangover with small children. Why do the fates always collide the morning after the night before and ensure they all have to get up at 6am and decide to form a band, at the bottom of your bed?
Life can be so cruel.
Admittedly, I'm not usually the hungover one. I tend to be the sensible adult (or, as history would attest, the pregnant one). As a result I have lived through more hangovers from the other side of the beer fog than I've personally experienced. Which is why this book was actually perfect. The scowl on the wife's face had us both doubled over far longer than it should.
I wasn't sure whether this book would count as one of my reads, it is after all insanely short; however, the reality is it is a book and it's probably the best one I've read in a while.
If you're a parent, or know someone who is, they need this in their lives for those dark moments. Of which there can be many.
Absolute perfection. The greatest praise I can offer is that I wish I'd written the bloody thing myself!
A humorous and very entertaining book. Having remembered reading the 'original' book to my children, this parody tells the tale of a father trying several different remedies to get over his hangover before finally emerging from his 'cocoon'. Very clever! 9/10.
This book was okay. It was a good pastiche of the very hungry caterpillar, but with a hungover dad as the main character. I wished the art style matched the original book. That would improve it for me.
A quick, lighthearted parody of the children's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It takes 5 mins to read (if that) and puts a smile on your face at the start of a long day. Love the books in this series.
A perfect gift for the parent who had has to read the very hungry caterpillar one too many times. I don't have children and even I found myself reading it with the pacing and intonations I use for the original when friends children visit.
Is it wrong for me to prefer this to the original?! I love how it follows the original storyline and I'm sure quite a few could relate to this scenario.
this is hilarious, just what is needed, especially in these horrible and stressful times. if you're ever feeling gloomy or down please pick this book up, it is fantastic.
A great alternative book for an adult who has read The Hungry Caterpillar endless times to their children, and wants a funny grown up version of eating non-stop. Perfect Christmas stocking filler.
