Paul's letter to the Ephesians has been beloved throughout church history and is full of theological significance and practical instruction. Its themes revolve around identity in Christ, both for individuals and for the church. Paul's goal is to help believers see the beauty and glory of Christ and grow up into maturity.
Leading New Testament scholar Thomas Schreiner illuminates the text of Ephesians in this important, stand-alone commentary. Writing from an evangelical and Reformed perspective, Schreiner's focus is on exegesis of the text and on drawing out theological significance. For each section of text, Schreiner examines the flow of thought and then provides a verse-by-verse interpretation. His introduction to the letter deals briefly with topics such as authorship, historical setting, and epistolary structure. Schreiner's focus on exegesis and robust theological interpretation makes this an ideal resource for pastors, students, Bible teachers, and educated lay readers.
Thomas R. Schreiner (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including New Testament Theology; Magnifying God in Christ; Apostle of God's Glory in Christ; and Romans in the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament.
Thomas Schreiner is no stranger in solid theological circles! He is well known for blending academic rigor with pastoral warmth.
In this commentary, he does just that, making the dense theological text of Ephesians highly accessible. The structure of this commentary is a highlight. Before commenting on specific verses, Schreiner examines the passage within its broader "flow of thought." This is immensely helpful because it prevents the reader from getting lost in the details.
Because Schreiner is writing from an evangelical and Reformed perspective, I particularly appreciate his theological insights regarding the believer's identity in Christ.
Overall, the commentary strikes a great balance of exegetical depth and pastoral application. I can easily see this being a very useful resource for pastors, seminary students, and lay readers alike.
A classic theological treatment of Ephesians—highly recommended!
Schreiner’s writing can feel like being flooded with critical ideas and points because he refuses to waste any words. Every sentence is to be digested and turned over and revisited. His new commentary on Ephesians is no different. His treatment is primarily theological but he spends significant time interacting with other commentaries and the Greek. Well worth the time and money, even if you have other excellent Ephesian commentaries you will find tremendous value on every page of this one. Enjoy!
