She has become everything she ever wanted… and everything she despises.
Samara wakes in a prison cell as her worst nightmare: She’s a vampire, cursed with bloodlust that horrifies her. And though she now has the magic she’s always desperately craved, it’s a secret she must guard with her undead life.
Because this same magic marks her as an enemy of all vampires. Especially Raphael—their king.
Now, as a vampire, Samara is haunted by an inescapable thirst. In her sleep, she claws at her throat, trying to ease the pain. But when she’s around Raphael, her fangs ache for a deeper reason she can’t explain.
A mystical bond ties Samara to Raphael as her sire, preventing her from fleeing before he can discover her identity as the very witch he’s been hunting for centuries. Instead, she must journey with him to the Southern Vampire Kingdom. A journey that has her sharing both his carriage… and his bed.
There, Raphael offers her another bargain: Yield to her vampire nature and master her abilities, and he will help her break the bond.
But if she lowers her guard too much, if her control over the powers she barely understands slips and Raphael learns she’s the necromancer…
He’ll be forced to kill her.
A Magic So Deadly is the second book in the Kingdom of Dark Magic series, filled with a slow burn romance, unique magic systems, and forced proximity. This romantasy series is perfect for readers of Carissa Broadbent, Penn Cole, and Jennifer L. Armentrout.
Vasilisa Drake is based in New England and is constantly bouncing from city to city while she tries to find her home amidst overpriced rental apartments. Forsaken Mate is Vasilisa Drake's debut, though she's written contemporary romance under another name for several years. Fantasy romance is her first love, closely followed by pet dragons and men who are obsessed with their women. She can be found staying up way too late reading, organizing her bookshelf for the millionth time, and winning the imaginary arguments in her head at least 30% of the time.
Uhm, you GUYS!!!! What in the world?! I’m flabbergasted! I think I’m in shock. Vasilisa.. what do you mean?? 😫
I absolutely loved book one and have been waiting patiently for book two lol.. and with the ending in book one I had high hopes for A Magic So Deadly. I was not disappointed!
I’m still in love with Raphael and he can do no wrong ❤️ also really enjoyed seeing Samara figure out her new reality as a vampire and the other struggles she faced. She’s a good one, for sure 🥹
There were times after the half mark where I thought the story seemed two slow down, which was all an illusion. Omg. I should have seen it coming, no? And that ending? Noooo, like what? Did I miss the signs? Felt like the script was just flipped?! Forget ”just” a cliffhanger, we’re talking plot twist with a side of reader betrayal from hell. Which is why I’m giving it 5 ⭐️ oh my
Please just do yourself a favor and start this series!!!!
Okay but that ending of A Magic So Deadly??? Absolutely diabolical. Like… Vasilisa Drake really said “let me ruin your emotional stability real quick” and I just had to sit there and take it.
Raphael??? Sir??? You are for the Kaan Vaegor girlies and I will not be elaborating. The man is down horrendous, fully devoted, zero shame about it—and I eat that up every single time. Give me a powerful man who folds for her specifically and I’m locked in.
Now the FMC Samara.. I’m gonna be honest, she’s testing me a little. I get that she has her own plans and motivations (same energy as book one), but I’m really hoping we see some solid growth in the next book because right now it’s feeling a bit stagnant.
That said, everything else??? Incredible. Expanding into all three kingdoms added so much depth to the world, the plot twists and betrayals kept me on edge, and that SLOW burn??? Torture. Delicious, frustrating torture. And don’t even get me started on the forced proximity… I’m weak for it every time.
Final verdict: chaotic, addictive, emotionally damaging in the best way. I will be unwell until book three.
A digital arc of this book was gifted to me by the author.
A Magic so Deadly is a solid, compelling second installment in this Vasilisa Drake’s Dark Magic series, though it suffers a bit from the dreaded "second-book syndrome." While I ultimately enjoyed the story, a few pacing and character choices kept it from being a full five-star read for me.
Let’s start with the positives: the last 5% to 10% of this book is absolutely phenomenal. Vasilisa Drake knows how to write a gripping, high-stakes ending, and the cliffhanger we are left with is brilliant. It sets up the next book beautifully and leaves you desperate for the next.
However, getting to that spectacular ending took a bit of a slog. For a large portion of the novel, the plot felt like filler. Instead of driving the overarching plot forward or building up to the final scene, a lot of the page-to-see time felt like a retread of book one. We spend a lot of time re-exploring the budding relationship between Raphael and Samara. Granted, this time it’s in her new form, but it felt largely unnecessary. I would have much preferred less relationship treading and more plot development or situations that directly tied into that massive ending. Samara was somewhat of a hurdle for me in this book as well. Her hatred for vampires is entirely justified given her past, but her rigid worldview became frustrating. Even when presented with clear evidence that the world isn't just "evil vampires," she refuses to relent (for most of the book anyway). Because she clings to this bias for so long, she becomes quite unlikable for a good chunk of the story.
Thankfully, Samara does finally begin to see the light close to the end, and the explosive finale completely salvages the slower middle. If you loved the first book, you will definitely want to pick this up; just be prepared for a bit of a slow burn before the fireworks start.

First of all I want to thank Vasilisa Drake for gifting me this ARC.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars
I read to fall into a story—to be intrigued, completely absorbed in a world I never want to leave, and occasionally to be so shocked that I have to put the book down and get my head on straight.
A Magic So Deadly did all of that.
I’m putting it out there: this delivered the best plot twist I’ve read since Metal Slinger. If you know, you know.
This second book picks up immediately where book one ended. Samara wakes once again in a prison, but this time her nightmare is far worse—she has become the very thing she has hated all her life: a vampire.
Consumed by bloodlust and horrified by what she has become, Samara is forced to confront a new reality. She now possesses the magic she has always craved, but it is a dangerous power that must remain hidden. It marks her as an enemy of the vampires, especially Raphael, their king.
Unable to escape because of the strange bond forged with Raphael as her sire, she is forced to travel with him to another kingdom. There, he offers her a bargain: embrace her vampire nature, learn to master her abilities, and he will help her break the bond between them.
What follows is a fantastic blend of political intrigue, danger, and character development. The relationship between Samara and Raphael deepens in ways I wasn’t expecting, while a deadly plot unfolds around them. Someone wants Samara dead, and there is a traitor hiding within their court.
The tension, the secrets, the slow unraveling of the mystery—it all kept me completely hooked. And then there was that ending…
That ending.
I genuinely sat there staring at the page in disbelief. Now I’m left with one very important question:
Where is book three?!
I absolutely loved this book and devoured every page. If you enjoyed the first book, prepare yourself because this sequel raises the stakes, deepens the relationships, and delivers twists that will leave you reeling.
This was my first ARC ever and I honestly don’t think I could’ve picked a better book for it! I’ve read a lot of second books in series lately that fall a little flat, but this one really surprised me!
I loved how it picks up right where book one left off. Nothing is neatly wrapped up, and the characters are still sitting in that same conflict, which I actually really liked. It made everything feel unpredictable 👀
The slow burn romance is still very much slow burn… like painfully slow at times, but I kind of loved it! Nothing felt rushed or forced, and it really builds all the way through instead of giving in.
The only thing I’d mention is that the book is on the longer side. It didn’t bother me because I was really invested in the story and characters, but I could see it feeling a bit long if you’re not fully locked in or don’t remember everything from book one.
And that ending?? Are you kidding me!! 🤯 That last chapter had me just sitting there like what just happened. I need book three immediately because that cliffhanger was insane!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAH got the ARC and I'm diving in!!!! I can't freaking WAIT I LOVE THIS VAMPIRE!!! And that ending from the first book -- OMG it was PHENOMENAL!
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Seriously, this series is everything a vampire romance is supposed to be. This book ended w a twist but still my heart is okay and I really appreciate that 😂😂 I just love Raphael. He’s the best mmc. Ahhhhjkmhnfmlhn!!
Firstly … what was that ending!!?!??!? How could you do that!!!!
Okay I will start with Raphael.. that man is sheer perfection. I wish I could bottle up this man and take him everywhere with me. He loved Samara so so much and it was divine. Part of me wanted to shake Samara at times just to make her see how badly that man had it down for her!!
I found the first part of this book a little slow, Samaras awakening as a vampire was good but her hatred to vampires felt a little tiresome at times. I know we had the grimoire to blame for it and quite frankly I was relieved when I realised the book was making her a bit cranky.
The story does pick up towards 50% mark and we finally see samara start to experience her new life with Raphael. I honestly loved that he knew who she was the entire time and was still absolutely devoted to her, I can’t tell you how smitten I am with that man.
Then there’s that ending ….. the only bad thing about reading an ARC … is that I have to wait even longer for the next one 😂😂😂

I received this book for free and am leaving a review voluntarily. Thank you Vasilisa for allowing me to ARC read this book 🥰
I just finished A Magic so Deadly by Vasilisa Drake and this book was so good! This is book 2 in A Kingdom of Dark Magic series. It continues exactly where book 1 left off which I love because the ending in book 1 was mind blowing. We are still following Samara, the FMC, and Raphael, the MMC as they navigate the events from book 1. This is a story about trying to navigate a new life you never wanted. We also get more political intrigue, more side characters, and the world opens up even more with travels to other places along with a huge betrayal. I can’t say much about this book since it is the second book in the series, but I will say the plot twist and the cliffhanger at the end I was not expecting at all! Give this book a try when it releases on June 30th because it is really an excellent read! 4.5 ⭐️
I LOVED A Bargain So Bloody and honestly this one lived up to to the hype in my brain! I was so lucky to get an arc and I had the very best time on this journey! This book kept me guessing till the very end! I am obsessed with Raphael and Samara's love story. The slow burn be burning it up in this one! :)
Pros: * Author included a brief recap of the first book! (Why doesn't everyone do this?!?) *Lots of Raphael & Samara time *Twists and turns galore *A new view on the vampire world
Cons: * It drugs for a bit in the middle * Thea POV was boring
I am so freaking invested in this world and storyline! I was so excited to get an arc, the only downside is having to wait even longer to read the 3rd book!
I received an advanced reader copy for this book and I am voluntarily leaving this review because more people need to read this (and suffer with me as we wait patiently for book 3). A Magic So Deadly was everything I wanted it to be and somehow even more. Every expectation I had was met, exceeded, and then completely obliterated. I usually finish a book with at least one small critique. A pacing issue. A character choice I wasn’t fully convinced by. A plot point that didn’t quite land. Not this time. This was a genuine, wholehearted, no-notes 5-star read. First of all, Vasilisa Drake’s writing style is absolutely beautiful. It strikes that rare balance between being lyrical and atmospheric while remaining incredibly easy to read. Every page felt purposeful. Every chapter pulled me deeper into the story. One thing I particularly appreciated was the concise recap at the beginning of the book. As someone who reads a lot of fantasy, I cannot overstate how helpful that was. It refreshed my memory without feeling repetitive and allowed me to slip straight back into the world. Within a few pages, I felt completely immersed in Eurobis again, and it felt as though no time had passed between finishing A Bargain So Bloody and starting this book. As a Greek reader, I also have to mention how much I appreciated the author’s research and attention to detail. The use of words with Greek origins felt intentional and thoughtful rather than superficial. It added an extra layer of enjoyment for me and made the world feel even richer. And then there are the characters. Samara and Raphael continue to be one of the most compelling pairings I have read in fantasy romance. Their relationship has such a unique push and pull to it. There is tension, conflict, longing, and uncertainty, but underneath all of that there is also an undeniable sense of safety. The trust between them develops so naturally and beautifully that every interaction feels meaningful. Their dynamic never feels forced. It evolves exactly as it should. This is the kind of slow burn that physically hurts. The kind that has you staring at the page, willing two fictional characters to get their act together while simultaneously knowing that if they did, it would ruin everything. Every glance, every conversation, every moment of vulnerability felt earned. The payoff is made infinitely sweeter because of the journey it takes to get there. The pacing was also phenomenal. Anyone who follows my reviews knows that pacing is one of the things I am most critical of. Even books I love often lose me somewhere in the middle. A Magic So Deadly never did. Not once. The story constantly moved forward while still giving emotional moments the space they deserved. And then we need to discuss the plot. Fantasy romance is a genre where certain twists can become predictable. After reading enough books, you start spotting the clues early. Apparently, Vasilisa Drake took that personally. Not once. Not twice. THREE TIMES. Three separate times within a matter of pages, I genuinely gasped out loud. I pride myself on being fairly good at predicting twists, and this book completely humbled me. What I love most about this series is that it never sacrifices plot for romance or romance for plot. Both are equally strong. The world-building is immersive, the stakes feel real, the emotional beats hit exactly when they need to, and the character development continues to impress me with every installment. By the time I turned the final page, I was left with that bittersweet feeling that only comes from finishing a truly exceptional book. I loved everything about this book. I cannot wait for Book 3, and I cannot recommend this series or this author highly enough.
Huge thanks to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I am absolutely thrilled that I got to be among the first to read the sequel to this amazing fanged series🩸
The second book hit even harder for me than the first one. While the first book felt more like building the foundation, this one delivers a full-on development of the story. After that cliffhanger in book one, I couldn't wait to find out how Samara would adapt to her new role that was thrust upon her.
It was so exciting to go through every single stage with her and uncover new details about her situation. The author did a great job depicting all the struggles Samara faces. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of how often she whined and brooded over what would happen if someone found out the truth. Instead of taking action, she barely tried to do anything with her new power and just kept labeling herself a monster. I'm really glad that she eventually evolved and realized that things aren't just black and white. Both witches and vampires exist in shades of gray, and everyone has their own sins and merits.
Raphael❤️🔥🩸🤤 My goodness, what an absolute dream of a man 🛐
A total green flag! Like the moon in the sky (or three moons🌝), he remained Samara’s steady, unwavering rock, even when she was pushing him away with all her might. The things he did for her—that is adoration and love in its purest form. The way he showed her the joy of life and music, and how he guarded her sleep at the expense of his own, just completely melted my heart❤️🩹 A couple of times, his actions literally moved me to tears🥹
But don't go thinking that just because he treats her with sweet reverence, it’s a sign of weakness. Not at all. The way he protects her, how jealous he gets, and what he’s willing to do for her happiness and safety goes way beyond your typical "nice guy" trope.
I absolutely loved how the bond between Raphael and Samara shifted. I adore the "forced proximity" trope 🤤—it delivers so many delicious scenes🤌🏼 Speaking of which😈: this book has so many juicy biting moments 🫦 My personal favorite is definitely the one in the carriage and the one in the woods when someone felt the true depth of the hunger🤭🤤 Still, I wished there were a few more full-on spicy scenes; the slow burn is still very much present after all🙈
The book ends on another cliffhanger. Unfortunately, it was quite predictable for me, but that didn't ruin the overall experience because it felt like a logical part of the plot—something the author actually hinted at in the very second sentence of chapter one in the first book. However, right before the finale, I did NOT see that choice/action by the main character coming. I really, really hope that what she did won't leave irreversible consequences💔🥺
The ending gives a pretty good idea of what's to come in the next installment of the series, and I honestly can't wait to see where the story goes next 🖤
Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy of this ebook!
I loved A Bargain So Bloody and after that crazy ending I was so ready for book two! When I was accepted for this ARC I did a reread of book one and caught so many little details that I missed the first time, so I highly recommend a reread though I really appreciated having the recap at the beginning of book two.
Book two immediately picks up where book one left off, making it very easy to jump right back in the story. The plot was very present in the book and we get a lot more world exploration and information. The magic is also explained more and you get to see more of it being used.
While the first book was only Samara’s point of view, the second book is still primarily in her POV but you do get two new ones which I really loved. Being in Samara’s pov in this book was very raw and a roller coaster of feeling which I think was written pretty well considering she was experiencing a lot after being turned into something she hated. She has to overcome the feeling of having a new body and new needs, which led to a lot of conflicting feelings and I loved how she navigated it all while having hightened emotions.
Raphael is a patient, quite MMC with few words but the words he does choose to say are very powerful. His devotion to Samara is my favorite thing between them and I love how his composure slowly dissipates throughout these two books. This is a slow burn series and book two holds true to it, there is more romance in this than book one but it’s still not everything we are expecting from these love interests.
Loved the forced proximity and the bond, this book has a lot more blood drinking than book one did since both main characters are now vampires.
The first 30% was strong and fast paced, I loved the banter so much. Raphael’s flirting game is definitely stronger in this one and their back and forth banter at each other was top notch! The last 10% was also strong and very fast paced and left me with some questions and just as worried as book one did. However, the middle of this book did slow down a lot and you get more sweet moments between these characters where the strong connection between them really starts to grow. I feel like there was some repetition in scenes and a few sentences but it wasn’t something too distracting or anything that slowed me down in my progress through this book.
SPOILERS*** * * *
I could feel the ending coming from the first chapter that we got in Almathea’s POV but it still hurt because of everything that we got from them in book one. I loved her character so much but I could feel the betrayal coming within the first two chapters and was glad for the distance from her in this story.

Samara.... what if I told you... Raphael was a mastermind.....
I give this book 4.2 ⭐️! Not as good as the first one, definitely a (needed) training-arc book, but still fast-paced and fun and romantic.
LISTEN TO ME!!!!!!! there could not be a book man as committed to his girl as my boy raphael!!!! Mama I love him!!!!! he's on his peak #1 yearner bs 24/7!!!! he is 100% up and willing to play as long a game as he needs to win samara. we saw it beautifully in the first one, but in this one it truly comes to fruition. need turns into desperation. this man would do ANYTHING for her. ANYTHING!!! and WE GET HIS POVS which is what i truly, truly needed entering this book. THANK YOU MS. DRAKE! the tension in this book between raph and sam was absolutely scrumptious. the sheer amount of scenes that we get of them in here is enough to give this book a baseline of 4 stars.
not to mention, the character development that samara has in this book is wonderfully done. she's adapting to something truly unwanted and unnatural for her, and it's so interesting to see her respond and grow from it. she's also just such a cutie!!
in this book we also get Thea povs, which were interesting. i really don't like getting povs from side characters in sequels, but in this book it was definitely necessary.
i liked that we got to travel outside of Damerel for most of the book, it was fun to explore the world more. it was also fun to see the characters interact with different people! the new setting allowed for some really great scenes, yk i love a good festival.
there were two plot twists in this book that I had to physically shut for kindle for to scream about. the first was shocking, but, more than anything, unsettling (yes, the fact that Raphael has a...🫥). The second was, frankly, disgusting. I feel disgusted and violated and devastated that I have to wait another year for this bs to be explained to me. UGH i'm mad
overall, there were some things about this book that i did not like. some of these things, though, are sadly just the nature of second-book syndrome, and also things that i think are just more personally disliked by me. this book was lush and exciting and allowed a much deeper dive into the world-building and character arcs. i knew ms. vasilisa drake wouldn't disappoint.
And thank you, Ms. Drake & team, for the ARC! The chance to read this book earlier than expected is all I ever wanted, really.
see u at the next book... (i'll miss raphael) (and samara)
Stop here if you haven’t read A Bargain So Bloody….
———————————————————————————-
In the conclusion of ABSB, Samara has been turned into a vampire against her will by Raphael as the only option to save her. This book is about both Samara and Raphael coming to terms with Samara turning. For Samara, she has always despised vampires and been conflicted about her journey to Damerel. She has to learn to accept that she is now one of the creatures she hates. Add to the complication that she is the necromancer - not only is it illegal for a witch to be turned, but the necromancer is the ultimate enemy of the vampires. Raphael has to come to terms with the fact that he now has a fledging vampire that he must care for and train. There’s a fun forced proximity with the sire bond which requires Samara to journey with Raphael to Limanos for the Southern King’s annual festival. During their journey, Samara agrees to try and embrace living as a vampire in exchange for release from the bond. She is conflicted because she is afraid she will be killed if anyone, including Raphael, finds out she is the necromancer. There’s secrets that are kept from each other, as both believe that they are doing the right thing.
This was a very strong continuation of the series. The characters are really strong, and the issues from book one are heightened with higher stakes. I enjoyed seeing Samara trying to come to terms with who she is, not just as a vampire but also as the necromancer turned vampire. I loved how Raphael cares deeply for Samara. He tries to give her space and respect her wishes, but also ensures that he is there when she really needs him. It was good having a few more POVs in this book besides just Samara. I also really loved getting to meet the Southern King (Julian!). This book has a lot of fun tropes such as forced proximity, only one horse, only one bed, possessiveness (she’s mine). It also continues with a lot of the vampire and magical elements from the first book. Overall it was a really fun book that I struggled to put down. Without giving any spoilers, that ending was CRAZY and I need Book 3 ASAP! I am truly invested in these characters, the world, and the story - I cannot wait to read what happens next!
Thank you so much to the author for providing me with an eARC of this book.
I am NOT WELL. I was hooked on this series almost immediately after I started A Bargain so Bloody. I listened to that audio almost start to finish without pauses. I couldn’t get enough. And then I was SO lucky to be gifted an ARC of this and LET ME TELL YOU. I messaged the author crashing out /a few/ times, I’m not going to lie.
Raph and Samara are low key everything. Samara is a void (a witch without magic basically) who was raised to despise vampires. Well lo and behold, ENTER RAPHAEL, the most delicious vampire who says things that made me SWOON. But despite how genuinely GOOD he is, Samara is still understandably PISSED at him from page one of this book. (Im not going to tell you why because I refuse to ruin this book for anyone, just read it!) And honestly I live for her anger, because it creates some very yummy tension and banter that I’m obsessed with 😈
Im going to forever be unwell over Raphael. I kind of obsess over too many MMCs but YOU GUYS, i mean it when I say this man is everything. Like, he is SO precious and he just made me melt. There was one point in this book that I highlighted like way too much because I’ll never stop wanting to go back and read the things he says. They aren’t even filthy you guys they are SO sweet! And boy does he just love her in a way that is so pure and good. And regardless of the hatred or animosity that Sam has towards him, the love and kindness persist. I can’t, idk. It is unreal how much I adore him.
The tension and banter in this book are swoon-worthy. The plot is so good and had me constantly wondering what was about to happen. I can truthfully say that I was NOT expecting the end of this book. The last 15% I was basically like, constantly shook. The gasps and number of “wtf” that audibly came out of me is unbelievable. I finished the book and my jaw literally dropped because I was NOT READY.
I honestly don’t want to give away much of the plot, because it is so good that I need everyone to read this and find out. This book is a masterpiece and I am officially REELING. The plot, the banter, the tension, the characters, the twists, everything about this was delectable. 12/10 must read, I will forever recommend this series to anyone and everyone for the rest of my life.
Now to wait an impossible amount of time for the next book (but truly already excited for a reread as a refresher 😈)
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review because it was so good!
A Magic So Deadly was an incredible read that completely drew me into its world. From the very beginning, the story had a sense of mystery and danger that kept me hooked, and it only got better as the plot unfolded. The author does an excellent job of creating a magical world that feels rich and immersive while still keeping the focus on the characters and their personal struggles.
One of the strongest aspects of the book is its characters. They are well-developed and feel like real people with strengths, flaws, fears, and motivations. I especially enjoyed watching the main character grow throughout the story. Their journey was compelling because they were forced to make difficult choices and face challenges that tested both their courage and their values. The supporting characters were just as memorable, each bringing something unique to the story. The relationships between the characters felt genuine, whether they were friendships, alliances, or conflicts, and these connections added emotional depth to the novel.
The plot is full of tension, twists, and high stakes that kept me eagerly turning the pages. I never felt like there was a dull moment, and several surprises caught me completely off guard. At the same time, the book balances action with quieter moments that allow the reader to connect with the characters on a deeper level. The writing is engaging and descriptive, making it easy to picture the settings and feel the emotions of each scene. The darker elements of the story create a powerful atmosphere that perfectly matches the title and themes. By the end, I was fully invested in the characters and their outcomes, which made the conclusion especially satisfying.
Overall, A Magic So Deadly is a fantastic fantasy novel with a captivating story, memorable characters, and a well-crafted magical world. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy filled with adventure, suspense, and emotional depth. It easily earns a 5-star rating from me, and it's a book I will be thinking about long after finishing it.
ARC Review – A Magic So Deadly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5/5) | 🌶️1.5
This series continues to have me completely invested, and A Magic So Deadly delivered everything I wanted from the next installment—more tension, more secrets, more heartbreak, and a cliffhanger that has me desperate for the next book.
One of my favorite aspects of this installment was the multiple POVs. Not only did it allow readers to spend more time with Samara as she struggles to navigate her new life as both a vampire and a necromancer, but it also gave us glimpses into Raphael’s thoughts and motivations. As much as I loved the tension between them in book one, getting inside Raphael’s head added so much depth to their relationship.
The slow burn in this series is SLOW, but in the best possible way. The yearning, the tension, the constant push and pull between Samara and Raphael had me hanging on every interaction. The stakes feel even higher knowing that if Raphael discovers the full truth about Samara’s identity, it could destroy everything between them.
Samara frustrated me at times—I definitely had moments where I wanted to reach through the pages and shake some sense into her—but her struggles with accepting her new reality felt believable given everything she’s been through.
The pacing slowed a little in the middle for me, but the story more than made up for it with the final act. The betrayals hit hard, the emotional goodbyes hurt, and that reveal? While I had started piecing together the clues and suspected where things might be headed, I absolutely love when a book gives me the satisfaction of saying, “I knew it!” while still making the moment impactful.
And that ending… wow. The combination of betrayal, heartbreak, and unanswered questions leaves readers hanging in the best (and most painful) way possible.
Overall, this was a strong addition to the series that expands the world, deepens the relationships, and leaves readers anxiously waiting to see what happens next.
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. Thank you @vasilisadrake for this opportunity.
Went into this with super high expectations after reading the first book, A Bargain So Bloody. I dare say that A Magic So Deadly surpassed those expectations and was even better than ABSB! The writing flows so well and brings everything to life so vividly.
Picks up right where it left off with Samara waking in a cell as a vampire. The very thing she despises. She has newfound magic and is the very witch Raphael has hunted for centuries. Automatically marks her as an enemy of all vampires. A secret she must keep. Her thirst is unrelenting and repulses her. And being around Raphael makes her fangs ache. A bond exists between her and Raphael as he is her sire and she fears she has to find a way to break this bond before he finds out she is the necromancer. If he finds out he will have to kill her.
They go on a journey to the Southern Vampire Kingdom and Raphael makes her a deal she cannot refuse. If she lives like a vampire during their time there and fully yields to it by mastering her abilities then he will help her with breaking the bond.
Things are not always what they seem. Follow their story and you will find adventure, twists, yearning, acceptance, betrayal, strength, friendship, power dynamics, court intrigue, love, heartache and magic. You will be craving more I have no doubt. Join the club. Multiple POV.
~"She was his undoing; he had accepted that." ~ "Blood sharing between vampires had...significance." If he could, he'd have tattooed the spots. ~"It's a dove feather." -Dove. That had been the first name he'd given me. He was marking me on his skin. ~"Let me be the monster for you, Samara."
THIS is how you write a book 2!!! I loved the expansion into the other kingdoms, such a great build to the story. Honestly, my entire review could just be about Raphael. Just describing this man will convince you to read the second book of this series. The YEARNING!! (Let me pick myself off the floor) 🫠 This man has fallen head over heels off a cliff for this woman, and has no shame about it, doesn’t care who knows, loves her for exactly who she is! Raphael is STARVING for her!! I love how he wants to help her embrace who she is, the power she now has, and not be ashamed of it. I am pining over this man! The is the definition of a true SLOW BURN.🔥 and it is done so beautifully! 🤌🏻
♥️”I would starve for a thousand more years if you stayed by my side. Compared to the thought of losing you, there’s no choice.”♥️
Samara, I’m not going to lie, I got a little irritated with her at times. I just got so confused of her defense of the witch kingdom, especially with how she was treated as a void. I did love some of the growth of her character in the last part of the book, but I hope to see a lot more in the third book. I love her character, I think with her being the necromancer, and now being an immortal, it could make her character super fascinating.
If I thought I was emotionally waterboarded at the end of the first book, I was wrong. This ending?! It was hard to get through with all the tears, and Vasilisa Drake was like, here let me rip your heart out! The LOVE, the betrayal, the last line in the book… where do I go from here? Ahhh I love this series so much!
Thank you so much for this ARC! I need everyone to get this book the second it comes out! 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Imagine waking up one day and becoming the very thing you've spent your entire life fearing.
That's exactly what happens to Samara in A Magic So Deadly.
Not only is she forced to navigate life as a blood-sucking vampire, but she also discovers she's something far more dangerous: the Necromancer.
Much of the first half of the story focuses on Samara coming to terms with what she's become, and I really enjoyed watching her struggle with her new reality. Everything she thought she knew about vampires, magic, and even herself is suddenly called into question.
Of course, things become even more complicated when it comes to Raphael.
Samara is already furious with him for turning her, but now she's carrying an even bigger secret. One she believes could get her killed if he ever learns the truth.
One aspect that didn't work quite as well for me was some of the spice. I completely understand why it was written the way it was, especially considering Samara spent most of her life imprisoned and has very little experience with intimacy. But at times, those scenes made me cringe more than swoon.
As the story progresses and the characters travel beyond familiar territory, long-buried secrets begin to surface, loyalties are tested, and Samara slowly starts to realize that the monsters she feared may not be the monsters she was taught to believe they were.
One of my favorite parts of this series continues to be the way Vasilisa Drake peels back layers of the world with each book. Every answer seems to uncover even more questions.
Vasilisa did what she does best and left me hanging with one heck of a cliffhanger!
Needless to say, I'll be impatiently waiting for book 3!

I was way too into the book to do a 75% update. I couldnt put it down and now I have finished it.
I thought the ending of A Bargain So Bloody was shocking and the cliffhanger was going to kill me. Turns out the ending of A Magic So Deadly is the real shock. My heart is pounding and no coherent thoughts are forming in my mind as I am reeling from this ending.
Arc Review:
This entire book is so INCREDIBLE!! I love that there are key terms and key highlights from book 1 at the front as a refresher. Samara is so stubborn. People around her are telling her the truth and yet she cant get past her own feelings. After the trauma shes been through, this is so relatable. Her main emotion being anger is so relatable. But as she accepts herself, she learns to deal with that anger. She takes her dark thoughts and "inspects them and letting them go". Its so beautiful watching her heal so much throughout this book.
And even more beautiful watching Raphael support her in any way that he can. Rafael is so clearly infatuated by Samara but is giving her the space she thinks she needs. I said it before but I'll say it again, hiss clenched jaw may be my version of Mr. Darcy's clenched fist. He has such patience for her. All he wants is for her to accept herself and be happy, at any expense to himself. His love for her is so selfless, its awe inspiring. He truly is one of my all time favorite MMCs.
The last 20% of the book had me on a Rollercoaster. I even put the book in time out when it got too much for me, only to pick it back up less than a minute later. I am not above begging for book 3 ASAP.
The story of the Kingdom of Dark Magic series is dark and grim, set in a world where hope seems pointless. Or so it seemed, until one fateful day when their worlds collided, and a prisoner girl and a caged vampire crossed paths. Seemingly enemies, brought together by something akin to fate and set on a path of unknowns and dangers that come not only in the form of monsters, but also feelings, forbidden, unwanted (and yet wanted), and so enticing.
A Bargain So Bloody, Book 1, grabbed my heart, squeezed it tight to the point of bursting, and never let go. A Magic So Deadly, its sequel, did the same. The ending of Book 1 left me gasping. The ending of Book 2? It left me reeling, catching my breath, and simply speechless.
The emotions oozing from the pages shattered me. Sam's doubts, Raphael's fears, they were so raw and so real. The sequel offered a wild ride of an action-packed, heart-shattering plot, filled with mysteries, self-doubt, and growing emotions, and I devoured it all.
The tables turned in Book 2, with Sam being newly turned. I truly felt her insecurities and her self-loathing. The core of her beliefs, hating vampires and everything they stand for, melted away, and now she must learn who she is after everything that went down. A Magic So Deadly focused on her path after the turning and all the turmoil that came with it. Raphael, again, was so patient and caring in this book, knowing what she needed and when.
Their journey is far from over, and after that ending, I don't know how much more my heart can take.
Thank you, Vasilisa, for keeping me as your ARC reader.
I was completely invested in this book from beginning to end. I finished it a few days ago and it’s still living rent-free in my head!
The Kingdom of Dark Magic series continues to impress me. From A Bargain So Bloody 🩸 to A Magic So Deadly 🐍, the unique magic system, compelling characters, gripping plot, and ability to keep me emotionally invested in every twist and turn are exceptional. While this is definitely a slow burn, the tension and relationship development make every moment worth it.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was how much deeper we got to understand Samara. In the first book (ABSB) I occasionally found myself frustrated with some of her decisions. However, throughout AMSD as we learn more about her childhood trauma and its lasting effects, I found myself understanding her choices, fears, thoughts, and reactions in a way I hadn’t before. Watching her growth throughout the story was both heartbreaking and rewarding, and I cannot wait to see her step fully into her power and shine in the next book. ✨
The character development was exceptional, and the relationship dynamics had me hooked. Whether you consider it enemies-to-lovers or simply Raphael falling first, the chemistry between them was impossible not to root for. And the 🌶️🌶️ definitely intensifies with each book! 🔥
And Raphael? He completely stole my heart.
The plot twists kept me guessing. I thought I knew where the story was heading—but that final twist proved me very, very wrong. That ending absolutely destroyed me! - in the best way a book should, I am still recovering from the cliffhanger, so excited for the next book!!!
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
