Fun popcorn thriller!

My first Shalini Boland book and I'm going to be looking for more! This is an easy read, fast-paced with good suspense. The characters aren't that likable but it works for the story.

The Millionaire's Wife is told with two timelines, ten years apart by Anna, a Swedish girl/woman living in the UK. She meets Fin, a bad temper yet charming surfer boy. Against her parent's wishes, Anna skips going to university and moves in with Fin. Life as a young couple isn't as glorious as they first thought. They struggle financially and Fin has all kinds of crazy ideas to get rich. And I mean CRA-ZY. When Anna got pregnant things went from bad to worse.

Fast forward to present day, Anna is happily married to a nice millionaire guy, but secrets from her past are resurfacing and will ruin her perfect life.

Some secrets are so unnecessary. But I guess you need secrets to have a juicy story! I enjoy this pacy book and it has some good surprises. I had a different expectation about the ending, probably because of the book cover (don't look if you plan on reading it!!) so when that didn't happen, I was a bit disappointed. Overall, a fast and enjoyable thriller. 3.5⭐

💗🎧 I enjoyed this audiobook read by Katie Villa. I do wish there was some Swedish accent for the MC, but that's okay.

Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for this DRC.

4.25 Who Can You Trust? Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.25

Shalini Boland has become an autobuy/request author for me... her writing style flows so well and has such a crisp and clean feeling to it (not even sure if that makes sense, but it does in my head)... this book was originally self published and now is being brought to you by Bookouture.... I had a busy reading weekend and this book made it so easy... after I picked it up I did not want to put it down... I needed to find out what was going on?

Anna appears to have it all... a beautiful home... a loving husband... the problem? Anna has a secret or four... Anna was a super likable character, although she did a lot of really stupid things... there were times in this book I wanted to reach through those pages and knock some sense into her... thankfully she had some people around her with a little more common sense... there were secondary characters in this book that surprised me, but I can’t say much more than that.... in a book filled with so many twists and turns I can’t tell you how I felt about the other characters... because you need to go into this without knowing who you can trust...

Moral of the story.... secrets only lead to lies and more secrets... if Anna had been honest, we would have never had this book....😉

“A lie can travel halfway around the world, while the truth is putting its shoes on.”

As a complete sidenote there is a part in this book that has made me even more confused about the English school system, so different from America... I have no idea what an A level is, and they appear to take fewer classes?

Strongly recommend to all fans of this author and the psychological thriller genre...

*** thank you so much too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this fabulous book ***

You’ve made the decision to walk away from your past. But that doesn’t mean it won’t catch up to you at some point!

Anna is joyfully married, looking forward to her future with her wealthy, distinguished, husband. But now her past is creeping back into her picture-perfect life, refusing to let her go.

Told in two timelines: The present and the past when Anna was young, impulsive and deeply in love with a troubled young man.

Can Anna out distance her troubled past? Or is it all about to come crashing down around her?

I listened to the audio and enjoyed the narration.

Was this my favorite book by Shalini Boland? Well, no. By the end it was a bit OTT for me. But that’s not stopping me from queuing up her latest!

3.5⭐

When your past comes knocking!

Anna is happily married to her husband, Will. They have a wonderful life together. Then one day, Anna gets an unwelcomed blast from her past. Secrets and lies are the name of the game here.

This book is told through the past and present. In the past, Anna was in a relationship with Finn. She is happy but then Finn makes a shocking suggestion and then things go downhill from there.

Now happily married, Anna is worried and anxious when Finn reaches out to her.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it. I enjoyed the tension that was built upon throughout the book. There are a few twists and turns along the way. There are a lot of mixed reviews for this book and I get it. I enjoyed the audiobook and wonder if that is the way to go.

Although, I enjoyed it, this was not my favorite book by the author. But that will not stop me from reading whatever she writes next.

Just wondering if I read the same book as people giving this five stars??!!!!! I thought it was awful - so badly written with an unbelievable storyline and so much repetition Some of the statements the characters came out with just beggared belief. For example, Anna asks 'I wonder if I'm crazy coming here alone' as she hunts down her psychopathic ex boyfriend Fin who has managed heaven knows how, to kidnap their daughter. Durrrrr, of course you are but perhaps I'm more crazy because I read the whole thing although I skimmed much of it! And as for the ending - as we say in these here parts I was gobsmacked. Will and Anna have just been through hell, Will and Fin have fought on the edge of a cliff amongst other things and this is how the book ends: 'So want that iced coffee' I ask my husband
He smiles 'Yeah, why not?!' I mean please!!!! Don't waste your time or money. Absolute rubbish in my opinion!

This is my fourth book by Shalini Boland, and I know it won't be my last. Her style is so easy to read and all her books have held my attention from start to finish. The Millionaire's Wife is, I believe, Boland's first book which she self-published and now that it is being re-issued by Bookouture, I was offered a chance to read it by the publisher, for which I am very grateful. The story centers around a woman, Anna, and jumps back and forth between the past and present, revealing two important romantic relationships in her life. I don't want to give anything away, because there are quite a few twists in this book, but something happens in her past that catches up to her in the present, even though she had hoped it was over. This draws her into a rather frightening situation, which quickly seems to spiral out of her control.
A little aside - having just reached the point after the big reveal when the real action was set to begin when my kindle froze and I panicked that I wouldn't immediately get to find out what would happen next. I have not been a frequent reader of ebooks until a few months ago, so this was quite jarring. Fortunately, the problem was fixed and I could continue. This did make me think (as I always have) what a dependable treasure actual, physical books are!
As with Boland's other books, The Millionaire's Wife is fast paced and clever, even if certain points strained my credulity. I didn't really care if there were a few issues in terms of logic, it was just pure entertainment. I did feel a little irritated with Anna sometimes, because I wanted to shake some sense into her and couldn't really understand why she was making certain choices, but she was a fairly likable character and I did feel for her. Also, I guessed one of the major twists quite early on, though it wasn't confirmed until I was near the end, so it didn't take away much in the way of reading pleasure for me. All in all, I found this book to be engaging and satisfying from beginning to end.
If you are looking for a gripping summer read and are a fan of this author or writers like Claire Mackintosh, Angela Marsons or K.L. Slater, I feel certain you will enjoy this book as well. I already look forward to reading her next book!

Seems like the secret just keep popping up in the story.

Somehow the past keeps on catching up with Anna Blackwell. She is a very happily married lady now, married to a man she adores who also happens to be ultra wealthy. Life is ever so good until it isn't. When death comes to her door, she, in her heart who the murderer, her ex boyfriend. When he contacts her, she knows he is knows he just might come for her next. When he does, it's with a plan he had hatched for them when they were a couple, and it seems he is intent on them carrying it out.

This book flips back and forth between the past and now, and while it does present a few twists, it was in a sense disappointing, since the reader will puzzle out the outcome.

I was able to listen to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a fine job of keeping the story going. All in all, this was not a boring book, but one where the surprises were limited and the outcome guessed way before the ending.

Thanks to Shalini Boland, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for this story publishing this week.

I had a lot of fun with this book! And I'm not going to tell you anything about it, because if I do I'll ruin it for you! It's messy, sloppy, a bit of a guilty pleasure, really. The plot and character arcs are all the way preposterous, if I'm being honest. But I was still on the edge of my seat the whole time to find out what was going to happen next!

The fmc kept me interested despite her flaws. She managed to be both someone I respected and someone who drove me nuts simultaneously, which is kind of a good combo in a female lead! The villain is terrifying and infuriating, he's such a great antagonistic force. This book is definitely powered by these two characters and their palpable chemistry.

I really had to suspend my disbelief to accept many aspects of the narrative. I'm not going to list those, because I don't want to ruin the book for you! Read it, it's worth it!

TW mild and moderate DV, extreme DV, femicide, excessive drinking

Thank you NetGalley, Shalini Boland, and Bookouture Audio.

I am a fan of this writers recent books, her last I absolutely loved. But this one just went way off track and kept going. It was completely far fetched and not like her later books at all. I did read it in one sitting but it just shocked me and not in a good way. Sorry, this one was not one of her best

A set up so brilliantly thought out by two struggling young adults. When one person in the pact decide to pull out naturally blackmail and suspense follows.

I enjoyed this story, it has quiet a bit of a twist just after the half way mark. Shalini's story telling is rich and wonderful and it keeps you engaged. I do wish it was a little longer as some of it felt a bit rushed.

Overall a good story with good thought out characters and will keep you invested until the end.

I really enjoy the writing style of Shalini Boland and it is an entertaining read but this book was a little too far fetched for my liking and left me feeling disappointed. I have enjoyed other books by this author and I am sure I will read more of her work but this one was not for me.
The book certainly has a lot going for it, interesting characters, decent plot, but I am sure that if it was a little more believable then I could have been hooked.

4⭐ for the audiobook.

Featuring ~ single 1st person POV, dual timeline

We follow Anna and Finn beginning in 2007 and then Anna and Will beginning in 2017.
Anna's past is catching up with her in the present with lots of secrets to go around. I was pleased with a few of the twists. A decent suspenseful thriller with some implausible moments, but still fast paced and engaging.

I thought this one sounded familiar when I started listening to it, so I'm mad that I didn't check here first since I read it back in 2019. I am NOT a re-reader! I didn't write a review back then, but I gave it 4 starts and I give it the same now.

Katie Villa did an alright job narrating for 7 hours and 25 minutes. Her male voices were okay, except for the professor's.

- cracks knuckles and neck -

Okay, suspense is admittedly not my usual forte BUT having read about vampires and a dystopian future by this author I am going into it with sincere optimism. She's always been solid about her backstory and I would love to see how that talent applies to a woman with a deep, dark past rushing up on her.

Firstly, snazzy cover. Minimalistic but still eye-catching and subtly emphasize someone with a double life who must confront the darker aspects of it.

Regarding the pages between, the story itself consists of Anna's present day suspense with every odd chapter flashing back to her youth and life building up to the story as it is. By about halfway through the reader more or less knows Anna's dark secret, which I felt was good pacing for this particular story.

I feel this book did a decent job of holding my attention but it still felt a little short. More misdirection and close calls would have spiced up the situation between lulls in the actions, which were intense but sparse.

Another minor critique is the characterization is a little black and white, such as baddies being so crazy or malicious you wonder how this plot didn't fall apart. Anna was a touch frustrating with how indecisive she was but did sell her fluster and panic.

Overall I enjoyed the book and would consider picking up another suspense novel by this author when the mood strikes again.

Just like always, Shalini Boland does not disappoint. The Millionaire's Wife is one twisty ride. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, one shocking twist after another took this sinister tale in a totally unexpected direction. The audiobook was expertly narrated bringing an extra layer of mystery and suspense to this fast paced psychological thriller. This book is the perfect remedy for any reading slump. Anna has it all. She’s married to a millionaire who she is very much in love with and life is good. That is until her ex makes a reappearance threatening to take everything away from her.

The story flicks between present day and to the past at different stages of Anna meeting Fin and their relationship together. I really enjoyed getting to see why Anna was so worried and what sort of man Fin was. Certainly not a very nice one, that’s for sure.

I loved Will. Obviously the fact he is rich is just an added bonus but I found myself wishing I could swap places with Anna. It’s obvious how much he loves his wife also and I was praying that whatever Fin was going to try and do to this couple that they would come through it okay.

This is only the second book I have read by the author but she is steadily becoming one of my favourites. This is another read that as soon as I picked up, I didn’t put it down until I came to those two words, The End. She has a way of drawing you in and not letting you go.

The Millionaire’s Wife is a nail biting, edge of your seat read. I couldn’t sit still as I was dying to see how everything was going to end. I loved how the author throws some unexpected surprises in just to keep you on your toes whilst thrilling and exciting you to the max. What can I say apart from that I loved it. Psychological thriller fans, you have got to read this book!

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

This book is crazy. I'm choosing to blame the book instead of my own lack of responsibility for my exhaustion today, because it kept me up late. I needed to see how it ended! It's definitely outlandish, but it's so absorbing and flows so well that I didn't mind. Please take my advice and stay away from spoilers on this one. I really believe they'll ruin the experience. Some of the twists left me stunned, and I'm usually pretty hard to surprise.

On the other side of the world from our dear Anna, a woman is brutally killed. Murder or terrible accident? Anna is blissfully unaware of the event, enjoying the surprise party she threw for her husband's birthday. She believes she's finally found her soul mate, and she and Will enjoy a very loving and privileged life. But her happiness won't last long... she receives a text with an image of the dead woman attached. She's told that she's next.

Fearing for herself and everyone around her, Anna has no idea what to do. Her world has been rocked. She's afraid that her life with her loving husband and new family will never be the same.

Someone from Anna's past is coming for her... and it can only end in tragedy. We get glimpses of her past as a teenager along with the present as we try to figure out who is after Anna and why. Put aside some time for this one, it was a one sitting read for me.

I received an ARC of this novel from the author, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.

What a great thriller. I have read two other novels by Shalini Boland, The Girl From the Sea, and The Best Friend and I enjoyed this one just as much. Boland is a great writer.

This story begins with what appears to be an accident while a couple is on a vacation in Barbados in January 2017. Barbados seas are warm and refreshing. Katie wants to spot dolphins and goes for a swim even though her husband would rather lie on the beach. Katie, a woman in her late 20's, is killed in a boating accident not long after she begins playing around in the warm water. Something doesn't line up and soon we suspect there is more to the story.

Secrets. "The trouble with revealing secrets is that you never know how to the other person is going to react. A secret is like gravity, pulling everything inexplorably towards it in a deteriorating orbit. The bigger the secret, the bigger the pull."

In another part of the world...Anna Blackwell lives a charmed life with her adoring husband, in a cliff top mansion overlooking the ocean. Anna has been keeping a lot of secrets from her husband, Will. She doesn't want to any longer. It's also Will's birthday and she is decorating and getting ready to throw him a big party.

Anna sees the report of the accidental death of the woman on the other side of the world and fears her past has caught up to her.

Secrets and lies unfold as the plot develops. While at the celebration for her husband, she gets a text..."Hello Anna. Your turn next. " WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

From here the story goes back and forth from 2007 when Anna and her best friend Sian spend high school days together; Anna falls in love with a boy, Fin, and into the present, where Anna is living in fear of what that text means, with more texts to follow...and how to hide all of this from her husband...the life she had. Who she was. She loves her present day life and feels very fortunate to have it. Now she may lose it all...depending on what she does.

It's a quick read, a page turner and I soaked it up. Well executed thriller. I highly recommend it!

I am thankful to Shalini Boland for offering me a chance to read this novel in exchange for a review. It comes out this week so grab a copy for yourself. (April 27) I am not one to give away too much of a plot in my reviews. Just know that this has lots of surprises and suspense just the way I like it. Would make a terrific movie!

Really stupid girl!

Anna meets Fin when she is 15. They are classmates. She has excellent grades and could attend any university of her choice but insists on moving in with Fin after graduation. They struggle to pay bills and eventually their relationship goes from bad to worse.
I hate reading a book where the main female character is so weak and stupid. It was impossible for me to even care what happened to Anna since I did not like her at all. So many horrible events took place because she was too stupid and weak to tell the truth. I hoped her husband would get away from her.
Even as Anna aged, she never matured. I felt like I was still reading about a teenager when she was an adult.

4.25★ Audiobook⎮ I’m new to Shalini Boland, but already impressed. The Millionaire’s Wife was a solidly told thriller. It may not have knocked me off my feet or necessarily even kept me on the edge of my seat, but it definitely kept me listening.

At just over seven hours of runtime, I was easily able to hear all of The Millionaire’s Wife in one day. Boland’s writing style was concrete and straightforward, bordering on simple. You wouldn’t think that style of writing would work well for suspense, but Boland has proven that a good thriller doesn’t have to be overly complex. With a premise as original as this one, there’s no need for convoluted twists and turns.

The plot’s development may have edged toward predictable at times, but never in an unsatisfactory manner. Is satisfyingly predictable a thing? Like when you’re aware of where the plot is [probably] headed, but are okay with it because it’s where you want it to go. Shock and awe isn’t everything, people.

The Millionaire’s Wife was more of a psychological thriller than an all around action-packed adventure. However, the action it did have was well executed. It had the feel of an old film classic, probably starring Julia Roberts or Sharon Stone. Although the main character was a blonde Swedish woman, so Malin Åkerman is probably a more modern selection. Anyway, I could absolutely see The Millionaire’s Wife being optioned for film.

I plan to return to Shalini Boland the next time I’m in the mood for some quick suspense. I typically turn into Agatha Christie in those times, but it’s nice to have a more contemporary author who can deliver the same effect.

Narration review: I have heard Saskia Maarleveld’s narration before, but never like this. My previous experiences with her as narrator were in the context of Speculative Fiction. I’ve heard her narrate Paranormal, Urban Fantasy, and Young Adult Fantasy, but never a thriller. I have to say, the performances are not comparable. They’re like apples and oranges. As much as I enjoyed Maarleveld’s previous work, The Millionaire’s Wife was her best performance to date. She seemed comfortable with the material and in her element, vocally. I hope Boland plans on working with Maarleveld again. ♣︎

THE MILLIONAIRE'S WIFE by talented Shalini Boland is a highly recommended complex, addictive tale of deceit and obsession. Trust no one! A richly atmospheric domestic suspense, thoroughly riveting, well-written, and a twisty psychological thriller—I loved it!

Psychologically rich, an exploration and thoughtful look at how even the most innocuous secrets between happy couples and beloved friends can turn DEADLY.

My first book by the author, and I cannot wait to read more of her future books and her backlist!

I listened to the audiobook in one sitting—UNPUTDOWNABLE! The narrator Katie Villa delivered a superb performance! I enjoyed her voice and will be looking for more audiobooks narrated by her.

Oh, how I DESPISED Fin (ex-boyfriend), and oh, how I LOVED Will! (current husband)

These two guys are opposites, and Anna is in the center of this triangle. But wait, there is a fourth, her best friend.

Where nothing is as it appears.

In Anna's earlier years, she was drawn to the "bad boy." Listen up, girls, never get serious with a "bad boy!" They are trouble with a capital T and not worth the roller coaster ride.

Her parents wanted her to go to university, but she met Fin over the summer. Fin lived up to that bad boy description. After they were together, she saw he was unmotivated, complained about money, was irresponsible, despicable, and always tried to devise "get rich" schemes. Because he is too lazy.

He works at a surfer shop, and they live in his father's garage. Anna works all the time, but it is never enough. She is in a constant state of fear. Fin does nothing to help himself. They had no money, which her parents had warned her to stay away from, but she did not listen and put her dreams on hold to be with him. Controlling and manipulative.

Soon Anna realizes her mistake. Can she escape this man? Fin came up with all kinds of plans and even wanted her to be an escort (she is beautiful) to get money or a proposed plan to marry rich spouses and murder them for their money.

Of course, Anna wanted no part of this when she found herself pregnant, and of course, he told her to get an abortion, she finally left him and started a new life. THANK GOD!

Years later, she meets a nice, wealthy millionaire, Will. He is the BEST in every way, and she truly loves him, and they have a happy life.

However, her safe and beautiful life now is in danger. One afternoon at her husband's birthday party, she receives a disturbing email. This email from Fin could destroy her life and marriage. She is afraid to tell Will because she does not want to lose him, but thinks she can handle it. But then things get out of control. Her past has come back to haunt her, but no fault of her own. She is dealing with a psychopath. Also, someone else is lying.

Fin is a blackmailer and stalker and pure evil. . His wife was recently killed in a boating accident, but was it an accident or murder?

Will and Anna must do everything they can to escape harm's way. She must tell Will about her past and confess —when it comes to protecting their new dog, its safety, and their lives.

In a fight for survival, Anna must decide just how far she’ll go to escape the person she once loved.

Hold on, there is yet another twist to be revealed toward the end, which is jaw-dropping. Trust me, you must read this book.

Compelling! A propulsive journey through a winding maze of secrets and lies, leading to a jaw-dropping twist that I never saw coming. Loved every minute.

I devoured THE MILLIONAIRE'S WIFE. If you are in the US, and fans of authors Mary Kubica and Kimberly Belle will enjoy this one. The plot twists, well-developed characters, and unpredictable ending make it irresistible. The writing is superb.

Ugh.

Interesting premise. I had high hopes but this book did not meet my expectations at all. Very contrived story. I was so disappointed because the book ended up feeling very childish and just ridiculous towards the end. Grown adults would not have made the decisions the characters did in this book. Waste of time.

Since I discovered Shalini Boland I've become addicted to her booka. And I didn't even like thrillers before! She has a masterful way of writting, and I love how she settles the drama and the mistery and then she begans to feed us little clues, snipets of information and everything begans to evolve and morph in front of your eyes. It is amazing.

This book is about Anna, a woman who marries a millonaire and holds a secret from him. She plans on telling him when she is sent a gruesome pic of a dead woman on her phone with the cue "You're next". And the stage is set. Because secrets can be dangerous, even more so when there is more people onto them...

I loved how the story was constructed, jumping from present to past, to help round the story and the moment, and the characters. All the characters are quite round, and Anna came accross as a very believable one, and so did Will, her husband.
There were lots of moments in which my mouth was hanging open with twists I wasn't expecting, and with moments in which I hated some characters very strongly.

This book is amazing. It balances suspense, surprise, well written plot, a good pace... it has everything! And that ending! It had me gripping the edge of my seat!

Sad. I really wanted to like the follow up books to The Girl from the Sea by this author. This was just bad. The story was far fetched, the characters were uninteresting and the attempt at a plot twist didn't work.

The writing didn't work either. What does "She pulled a face" mean? Is this a real expression. She also used "set my teeth in edge" more than once and other cliches.

I feel that her first book was too good and she rushed to write follow up books in a hurry.

My advice - slow down, make it worth it. Don't skip the reputation of your first novel with these hurried attempts.

I ended up skimming the last 75 pages just to get it over with.

It seriously was not worth the 99 cent special release price.

Filing it under - what not to do in my novel and how not to write a book.

If you're looking for a suspenseful read, look no further.
When Will marries Anna, he has no idea of the secrets she holds, but secrets have a way of coming out.....especially when a deranged ex knows them too. This book made me feel like I'd been slapped in the face several times with its WOW didn't see that coming moments.

Anna Blackwell is holding on to multiple skeletons in her closet, whilst trying to move on with her life with her husband Will. As far as she is concerned, the past is gone and is no longer a threat to Anna’s new life. Unfortunately for Anna, her past is certainly not forgotten and, with one small detail brought to Anna’s attention, that fact was cemented straight away. Should she tell Will what is going on? Or should she wait to see whether the past goes through with the threat?

One moment life was all rosy for Anna and Will, the next moment their lives are hanging by a thread. Literally. When the truth came out and Anna was made aware of just who was involved in certain events, it sent multiple shivers up my spine. It just goes to show that sometimes people really can be wolves in sheep clothing.

Excellent! The main character is so frustrating at times, but that was a delicious thriller!

What stood out for me reading this book? Without a doubt it was the twist at about the 85% mark. I didn't see it coming. The story itself was suspenseful. One of those psych thrillers that pulls the reader along using two timelines until they merge. However, it also had moments which required a healthy dose of reality suspension. The characters towards the end were way over the top. And although the story became increasingly implausible, it was still a fun read. The final 15% of the plot was edge of your seat gripping...action packed! The audio version was well performed and brought the story to life. Definitely an audiobook worth listening to if you're looking for a thriller.
