I am absolutely in love with JA George‘s Gothic Grove series so I was beyond excited when she announced this book, but it unfortunately fell a bit flat for me. There are some really strong bones here, but I think so much needed to be fleshed out before I could connect with it in the way I was expecting/hoping to. I really liked this story and how all the pieces came together, and I had a hard time putting it down. Sometimes you read a book and think, someone just wanted to write some hot sex so they created a vague story to tie their scenes together (no judgment- sometimes I’m very in the mood for this !!) and this book is definitely NOT that. The sex in this book definitely feeds the *story*, and the story is good. The critiques I have just would have made the story great (obviously just my opinion).

The spice is spicing 🌶️🌶️🌶️🥵. JA George writes some of the hottest sex scenes and this book is no exception. The MM scenes are hot; the MF scenes are hot; the MMM scenes are hot; and the MFMM scenes are hot. The vanilla, the kink, the scenes. If you’re into it, this will get your engine revving.

My first critiques is, it needed at least one more technical edit. There were a lot of typos/wrong words that jumped out at me, pulling me right out of the story. I know the original release date was pushed back so there was probably a lot of pressure to get it out, but it still needed a little bit more time.

The second is the character development. There is a lot of telling rather than showing. The first chapters skim the early years of the characters and the building of their relationships with each other but I felt like it was all too vague and even at the end of the book I’m still left wondering exactly how they all came together. Seeing them start to fall in love rather than being told they were would have gone a long way to making me feel their story. I also want more on their individual backgrounds. We keep getting told that they all have damage but why? From what? What we do see is a bunch of misfits forming a friendship but misfit doesn’t have to mean damaged person. I needed more. I also would have appreciated more buildup of the obsessed villain- we get one tiny scene that doesn’t really tell us much at all and then BAM he’s this big bad.

There is one character who’s backstory is deliberately left vague and I’m hoping it’s because we’re going to get a spin-off story about her. All critiques aside, JA George is an auto-buy author for me and I can’t wait to see what she’s going to come out with next.

This book is SO GOOD, but it needs a lot of proofreading/editing.

I am WEAK for sword crossing, so I was excited to know this was MMMF. The storyline is fantastic, flowing well without anything too dragged out. I liked that it was a faster burn, but still had a strong message.

- MMMF
- Childhood Lovers
- Second Chance
- Kinky (D/S Relationships)
- "Who hurt you?"
- Touch Her and Die
- Revenge
