Kate Baray writes page-turning urban fantasy with relatable characters.

When Kate's not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.

Kate is from Austin, Texas (where many of her stories take place) but has recently migrated north to Boise, Idaho, where soup season (her favorite time of year) lasts more than two weeks.

She's worked as an attorney, a dog trainer, and in various other positions, but writer is the hands-down winner. She's thankful readers keep reading, so she can keep writing!

Kate's series include Lost Library and Spirelli Paranormal Investigations. Under the pen name Cate Lawley, Kate (aka Cate!) writes Vegan Vamp Mysteries, Death Retired Mysteries, Fairmont Finds Canine Cozy Mysteries.

An intriguing short story. There is just enough to whet the reader's appetite and it hints at a well-developed world and characters. I will definitely check out Baray's Lost Library series.

More of an event or explanation than a short story, this is powerfully written.
You get a clear image of the pack alpha but still have questions about how he turned out that way. You can feel how difficult these actions are for Logan and why he feels he has no choice.

A very brief look into the Lost Library world.

An extremely emotive and powerfully written freebie prequel that definitely has me interested in exploring more of the author's writing.

Logan is only nineteen and his elder brother Richard is the alpha, the leader of the werewolf pack. But he’s cruel and violent. His wife has been missing so long, most people suspect she’s dead.
And when his four year old nephew John shows up with a broken arm Logan knows it’s time to deal with his brother but he’s weaker, so he’ll have to be smarter.

Richard is the Alpha of the pack but that means that he should protect the members of the pack - not treat them as property to be abused and thrown away.

When Logan finds that Richard has dislocated the arm of Richard's 4 year old son, Logan knows that Richard doesn't deserve to be Alpha.

Very short but tells us a bit about the dynamics between John and Logan. A great in between novella.

Practically "flash fiction", but unusual for a lycanthrope tale

Too short to earn more than 3 stars (maybe only 2.5 on Goodreads), but it feels real and painful -- I think more than the first full novel, which felt a bit shallow. Harsh necessity guides him, and he doesn't let pride or even "honor" get in the way. It's just a vignette, putting a long dreaded plan into action, and ends before the consequences can even manifest.

Rage is the prelude to John Braxton's past. With his parents dead and to protect his nephew Logan, John did the unthinkable to save the Texas pack. His brother, Richard is destroying the Texas pack but none is strong enough to challenge him.

John, once believed in his brother, Richard. But somewhere down the road, Richard has changed for the worst. Richard has become an abusive, mean drunk of a leader. The only solution was for John to kill Richard. John also recognized the ramification that if he failed, he is signing his own death warrant. Richard would killed him.

I have bought this book and have read the story before listening to the audiobook which was provided to me by the author. I have to say that the narration of the story is better than reading the book. It is because the narrator gave life to the story.

I love the narrator, Roberto Scarlato in how John is portrayed. As much as John loved his brother, Richard, John cannot forgive Richard for beating Logan. The narrator showed how decisive that John is and the sacrifice of saving one person, he has to kill another. The narrator does an excellent job of narrating this short story. I enjoy listening to this story again and again of how precise the story is told.

I was given this this audiobook by the author in exchange of an honest review. I was not compensated or influenced in any way for writing this review.

Rage

I was very lost with this short story and felt it was a waste of time to read. Left me hanging wanting to put the pieces of the puzzle together with the whole of the other novels.
