| Book 1 of the Sanity Series |

Two sides of the same coin. A reality where truth is silenced. And a superstructure of lies.

Derek Matthews? He isn’t just rich—he’s a golden heir society worships.
April Levesque? People never noticed her as important—until they gave her nothing left to lose.

But together? There's tension neither of them understands.
Maybe it's her friends. Maybe it's how his name is sung more than victims'. Maybe it's the way they both bend—until one of them finally breaks.

When their silence leads to a death behind bars, they're bound together by something far worse: a world where the truth is buried in cash and blood.

Before I begin, I’d like to mention that I received this book as an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Honestly I usually read books just to shut my brain off after a long day, so starting this one left me a bit uncertain, especially because the author had already mentioned there would heavy themes. But once I started reading, the book turned out to be interesting and exciting, maintaining the same momentum all the way to the end.

The book explored a lot of different themes and elements that felt very much like real life which made it more compelling. The Elites, mental health issues, sexual abuse, toxic friendships, racism, everything was strikingly realistic.

Out of the whole book the only thing that I found fictional is that the Matthews trying to be helpful and good compared to the other Families. Even they admitted they weren’t perfect just better than the rest. Which is what throws me off because the Elites would never.

I personally resonated with April because of everything she went through mentally, emotionally, and physically. She hid what happened to her and acted strong, when in reality she was crumbling inside. Luke’s death, her sexual assault, the toxic friendships, and the damaging relationship. She truly is a strong character.

Derek’s mental health issues because of his parents is very much real, making him question his existence, him wanting to end his life and the substance abuse. But Lin being there for him felt comforting.

And Luke Matthews, the man he is. I really REALLY want to read his pov. What he went through, and what made him the way he is today. I know it’s because of his dad but I’d still want to know about him.

April’s and Derek’s story left me anxious, and a bit of panic maybe because it reflected a piece of my own life, but it was absolutely one of the best books I’ve ever read. The author’s writing style is captivating and incredibly engaging.

Again this is my own review and my personal experience of the book. And would recommend to people who can appreciate and handle the heavy themes.

First of all, before I begin, I want to say a big thank you to the author for letting me be an ARC reader. This was an amazing opportunity, and I am extremely grateful.

So let’s get into it!

1. "Trying To Endure" is a very emotionally rich book- rich in events, rich in history, and rich in characters. It definitely focuses on characters that reflect society itself, and it touches on a lot of important and very real problems. This book is raw in the purest sense of the word. The topics discussed are extremely heavy and not for the faint of heart, but the exposure and awareness this story brings to these issues are so necessary. And that’s exactly what this book does.
2. There are a lot of characters in this book, each with their own traumas and issues, including our main characters (Personally, I was more drawn towards April than Derek). It explores the battles that come with these struggles in a very realistic and logical way. This book absolutely does not sugarcoat anything. It doesn’t romanticize anything either, which is something I truly appreciate. You could say it shows the "dirty" side of the world, the injustices of the systems we live in, and the cracks within them.
4. The language used is full of curse words, which might seem like a downside out of context, but honestly, I feel it’s justified. Sure, maybe a few moments could have done without it, but given that the book takes place in the UK, it fits naturally haha.
5. The author’s voice is unique. One thing I did find a little challenging was that, while there were beautifully written paragraphs, there was often a lack of description or action paired with the dialogue. This sometimes made the flow and clarity of conversations a bit hard to follow, as there were full pages made up of just dialogue. That’s something small and easy to fix, and it doesn’t take away from the power of the story. Another small note is that I occasionally found the side characters a little hard to keep track of- there are quite a few of them. This could just be a personal attention-span thing, but I felt it was worth mentioning.
6. That said, it’s very clear the author is highly educated in political, sociological, and psychological matters, based on how they tackled the issues in this book. I definitely liked this story, and the ending… wow, totally takes your breath away.
7. Also, can we talk about the cover? It’s beautiful. There’s something so memorable about it, even though simplicity is at its core. I don't know, perhaps it's the colors.

Overall, this was a truly interesting book that won’t let you sleep with its plot twists. It’ll keep you wide awake. While there are a few minor things that could be polished, and while it may not be suitable for all audiences, I think it was a wonderful, powerful read.

Once again, a huge thank you to the author. And to anyone reading this book- have a great time!

I was so lucky to be able to read this before it was published in exchange for my honest review and all I can say is wow, what a book! If you’re reading this for the first time I’m so jealous of you! It really is an emotional rollercoaster, full of themes that are as thought-provoking as they are intense. From the very first page, it grabs you with its raw portrayal of real-world issues such as mental health struggles, toxic relationships, social inequality, and much more. It's a book that doesn’t shy away from the darker sides of life, using a no-holds-barred approach to expose the cracks in society.
One of the standout features of this book is the characterization. The complex characters, each grappling with their own demons, make it easy for readers to connect. April's internal battles, dealing with the trauma of her past while presenting a strong exterior, resonate deeply, especially for those who've experienced similar challenges. Derek’s struggle with mental health and substance abuse is also strikingly realistic and heart-wrenching. There's a sense of vulnerability in the way these characters are written, making their journeys all the more relatable and impactful.
The writing style, while captivating, can sometimes be a challenge to follow. There are moments where long passages of dialogue make the narrative feel a bit disjointed, and the lack of descriptive elements can leave some scenes feeling unclear. However, these are minor issues when compared to the overall emotional weight the book carries.
The author’s boldness in exploring heavy topics is both refreshing and necessary. The book doesn't romanticize or sugarcoat difficult issues. It showcases the ugly truths of life, forcing the reader to face the uncomfortable realities that many would rather ignore. The raw language and gritty tone only enhance the authenticity of the story.
Despite the intense themes, there’s also a glimmer of hope throughout. The friendships, particularly those between April, Derek, and Lin, serve as a reminder that even in the darkest times, human connection can be a source of strength.
And let’s not forget the cover – simple, yet strikingly beautiful. It’s a perfect reflection of the book’s core: a powerful, unpretentious narrative that sticks with you long after you've finished reading. If you're someone who can handle heavy topics and appreciate complex characters, this is definitely a book to add to your reading list!

This is an ARC Review. Thank you to Adreen for sending me an ARC copy of Trying to Endure.

This book carries heavy themes, with detailed depictions of self-harm and suicide so please check trigger warnings before reading.

While I’m an avid dark romance reader, this story stood apart from the usual. Instead of romance being dark, the entire plot itself is steeped in dark elements (a fresh take for me, and one I ended up enjoying just as much as my usual dark romances.)

The book delves into power, corruption, wealth, politics, racism, rape, and more. I’m not proud of it but honestly, I’ve never paid much attention to politics, but the way Adreen wove it into the narrative actually made me want to learn more. That’s one of the things I appreciated most, it didn’t just tell a story, it pushed me to reflect and expand my perspective.

Derek Matthews, the MMC was complex and his take on mental health was well written. April Levesque, the FMC was incredibly strong despite all she went through, she stayed true to herself, even while grieving and struggling with self-love and acceptance. I admired her bravery. I also loved the diverse friend group, each bringing something special to the story. I adored the side characters just as much as the main ones. Lin and Tanner were my personal favorites. While Derek’s POV was interesting, I found myself wishing I could also dive into Tanner and Luke’s perspectives. The Matthews brothers definitely left me curious and I wish we could get their POV’s in the upcoming books.

I enjoyed Trying to Endure for two big reasons: the story itself, and the way it taught me so much. It left me with not only the tale of two broken souls trying to heal and love themselves, but also the motivation to learn more about politics, racism, casteism, ableism, sexism, and more.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I’m definitely looking forward to book two.

I highly recommend Trying to Endure to readers who can handle dark themes. It’s powerful, thought-provoking, and absolutely worth it.

for a dreadfully slow reader i gobbled up this book awfully quick. i love april. i love derek. i love how their inner worlds work. reading 250 pages in one sitting might just be a record for me lmao.

derek matthews is a beautiful character. i don't know how else to describe him. im in love with how political he is!! i love how he's not ignorant and goes out of his way to help people. he's simply precious. i was constantly grinning whenever him and april interacted. oh, and did I mention he reads??? because he does!! he was reading The song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. And!! He's got a skincare routine and everything. this mf goes to therapy. I'm all soup for him and his morbid sense of humor.

as for april, im fucking obsessed with how blunt she can be. everytime i hoped she'd go batshit towards the racist fuckers, she did more than just that. girlboss tutorial 101. she never strayed from her morals.

i adore duke and atlas. they're such amazing babies.

lin is just a babygirl oh lorde!! that man probably blushes tomato every time marlene breathes.

this book has a lot of diversity that I absolutely loved but the execution of it was a bit insensitive sometimes. I'm all in for reading intense stuff. but when sensitive topics are not dealt with proper care or realism, it just makes me uncomfortable.

unfortunately, i had to dnf the book at 80%. there's a lot of grammatical mistakes. tense wise. so eventually the storylines blurred together for me and I kind of lost my hold on the plot.

anyhow, i had the most fun time reading this book!! it absolutely brought me out of my reading slump and resurrected my og reading speed!! and i must mention, the author of this book sent me a digital pdf when i dmed her about not having access to any of the platform it's available on. that was really sweet of her and im eternally grateful <333

"Trying to endure" by Adreen Fernando is a contemporary slow burn romance that deals with real world issues.
Derek matthews and april levesque form a bond through their shared beliefs, traumas and situations that made their paths Crossing Inevitable. It showed how money, fame, and influence can change outcomes and covered issues such as racism, rape culture in "boys", casteism, ableism, politics, sexism , "blind faith in god and how people project their beliefs and blame it on god, and many more severe problems.
I've read the original wattpad version of the book and I know i had to read it when it gets published and it did not disappoint. I didn't know it could get any better.
The writing is complex and realistic. The characters are well written and developed. You'll definitely love them and ofc definitely loathe some of them.
Derek matthews is a complete GREEN FOREST WITH FEMINIST ENERGY and i absolutely love him. He's witty, filthy rich, real(like not afraid to be his true self and voice his opinions) , morally grey(and who doesn't love them a morally grey man) and he's most definitely a MAN not a boy.
And our girl april levesque is so god damn strong, intelligent(like freakingly smart), outspoken, will stand for justice and shows true QUEEN behaviour.
The book has side characters that you will absolutely adore and found family that is top notch. You'll laugh and cry with the characters and definitely question your beliefs, faiths , and morals.
I would definitely recommend "TRYING TO ENDURE" to anyone who enjoys thought provoking stories with strong main leads.

Reading this novel has been such a rollercoaster of feelings. Derek, the main character, isn't glorified due to gis status and being the protagonist, which already makes this book different from many others that I've read which have a powerful male lead. Despite his flaws, he tries to make the best choice based on his perspective, which often leads to violence.

I would like to mention what I have loved most about this novel, and it is the realistic portrayal of abuse victims. Sexual abuse towards men is barely spoken about, and I really appreciated how the author made sure that Rosie's tragedy is taken seriously and respectfully. It is also worth mentioning that April's experiences happen every single time, being abused by someone close and your friends suddenly cutting you off instead of supporting you is honestly heartbreaking, and it is important to know that, if any of these ever happens to you, you are not alone. And (TW:self-harm) please don't resort to self-harm the way April did.

I also loved the mention of many societal issues, such as power being held by a limited number of corrupted families and how far some powerful people go to silence those who know the truth. Unfortunately, reality often surpasses fiction, and some issues reflected in this story have been happening and will still happen if we let these kind of people rule over us.

Overall I really enjoyed this story, although if you're sensitive to some topics such as self-harm, abuse and grieving a family member or a close friend, read with caution.

‘Trying to Endure’ is a book that isn’t simply led by fictional themes, but serious contemporary issues that influence our society today. The book deals with real characters that are relatable and genuinely interesting, the author of this book has done something which is not common in all books, and that is to supply each character with a purpose that shapes the storyline of this book entirely. There are characters you may hate, and some you may love, but what is so important about this is the fact that they demonstrate the realities of current events that are taking place right now, how the rich control society and how those of under privileged backgrounds must pay the price. The story follows protagonists April and Derek, flawed and relatable characters who seek to reshape the world into one that is just, these are characters that teach you ‘silence is insanity’ and to make a difference, we must break this silence.

This book is one that will leave you with a serious emotional attachment to it once finished, it will put you through an emotional rollercoaster, which by the end of it will feel so worth it as you begin to fall in love with the characters and feel fully immersed in the books story line.

This is a book that I truly cannot recommend enough and always will!

(Arc review) This book is raw and emotionally charged story about trauma, privilege, and survival. It follows Derek Matthews, a wealthy heir accustomed to power, and April Levesque, a young woman overlooked and pushed beyond her limits. Their lives intersect in a way that exposes addiction, silence, and the hidden costs of privilege, creating a tense and unsettling narrative.
Fernando tackles heavy themes—substance abuse, emotional pain, and secrecy with striking honesty. The novel reflects the author’s intense creative process and resonates with a wide audience. The writing style invites readers into a story that feels both deeply personal and universally relevant, confronting the discomfort of silence and the consequences of buried truths.
Overall, Trying to Endure is a powerful opening to the Sanity Series, promising a journey that is both heartbreaking and thought provoking. Readers who appreciate character driven, emotionally immersive narratives.

Trying to Endure is one of those books that sits with you — not because it’s dramatic, but because it feels so real. The characters are flawed, vulnerable, and bold in a way that feels human, not performative. I appreciated how the author didn’t shy away from hard topics, but also didn’t turn them into clichés.

April’s strength and Derek’s internal battles both hit in different ways, and I liked how the story didn’t rush their growth. Nothing felt sugarcoated, and honestly, that’s what made it powerful.

It’s not a light read, and it’s definitely not for everyone — but if you want something honest, sharp, and emotionally heavy (in a good way), I’d absolutely recommend it.

Thanks again to the author for trusting me with this early read!

To start off, I just wanted to thank this amazing author for gracing me with the chance to read this book before the publication of it— it truly was an incredible, captivating read.

The book “Trying to Endure” by Adreen Fernando is a slow-burn romance which tackles real-life problems, events, and stories often dismissed by the public or looked away from. It captures the true and gritty side of the world we live in— from the struggles from one person to another, to the struggles of the whole economy itself. It explores the thoughts and emotions that so many people go through, touching on topics such as mental health issues, SA, political conflict, self harm, misogyny, addiction, and much more from all characters, not just Derek and April. This book left me crying, laughing, gasping, and being left in utter shock at times, so much that at certain moments, I had to take a step back and process what the heck just happened. This writing piece captured the good, the bad, and the ugly. So I thank this marvelous author, along with anyone else shining light to these topics, and becoming the voices for the people who can not use their own.

I will say, this book is not a light read or for the faint of heart, at all. But that is what makes it so impactful. I absolutely loved getting the chance to read this. With all the plot twists and jaw dropping moments, It truly captures you in a trance, and makes you question things instead of brushing them off.

The words “Silence is Insanity” took on a whole new meaning.

I honestly don’t know how to explain it in words, but this book is so much more than “just a book”— it is a form of art which got me back into reading and writing, along with making me question the unknown. For that, I am forever grateful.

I strongly recommend this magnificent book for the open-minded people out there, for it really makes you stop and think about the world we are living in, and makes you reflect on topics that are too often overlooked. Thank you, Adreen Fernando, for blessing us with this story — and please, keep up the amazing work. It is deeply appreciated <3 :)

First of all, I'd love to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to write an ARC review. I have been waiting for the release of the book ever since I saw the stories on SM, and it went way above my already high expectations.

I love that the book addresses multiple real-world issues, especially given today's political atmosphere.

The addressing of mental health issues was spot-on, as I've been disappointed countless times now, with stereotypes and exaggerations, and so was the misogyny, racism, and problematic friendships, and the theme of a few wealthy families controlling the world was really well done.

Last but not least, I love Derek and April (the most), and I can't wait for the sequel.

Thank you to the author for remembering me and giving me the opportunity to read her newer story!

I remember her story ‘The Heartbreakers Dare’ and it was soo good, I was able to grab the paperback before it was no longer available.

I love how deep the story tells. It explains real life situations and it does not sugarcoat it at all. The characters were nostalgic to me ! Trigger warnings as this book may not be suitable for all audiences. It has so many plot twists and turns it’ll keep you captivated!

Can’t say anything bad about the book or author! Knowledge on explaining the problems the world faces — definitely need to check this out

I didn’t finish the book yet but i really liked the way adreen writes. I couldn’t out the book away for hours.
The sentences are fluid and not too long.
I don’t know which character i prefer but i have to say that my heart say April.
I think adreen has succeeded in bringing the very dark themes in the book. To be honest certains scenes were Shocking but it was fine for me, but each person is different so be careful with the TW. She also talks about many topics that are always topical and very important such as racism and I think it’s great!

an amazing, truly compelling story. it's immersive, and it keeps you hooked till the very end- it addresses so many things that other dark romance books usually don't, and it truly does have a very creative plot.

the whole time i was reading this, i was on the EDGE OF MY SEAT. genuinely, both the male lead and female lead are well-written, and so is the book in it's entirety! loved this so much.

I want to start off by stating I was presented an advanced copy from the author.

Trying to Endure is raw, intense, and impossible to put down. It dives into heavy, real-world issues without sugarcoating or romanticizing them, showing the messy, unjust side of life. The characters all have their own struggles (I connected most with April), and the ending completely floored me.

So where to begin? I must admit that I judge books by their covers and when I saw this one, I knew that it would be a five stars read. The number of pages seemed like too much, but I read it in two days without stopping at all.

First things first, I'm so grateful that author gave me an opportunity to read this before publishing and for trusting me with her work. Also she was there for all my questions after reading it which is so kind of her and I think every author should do that. Thank you so much!

Secondly, read all triggers. I've read dark romance before but when it comes to this one, I must say that I've connected with characters from very first page so as much as everything hurt them, it hurt me too. It felt like going through pain of every character with them. So if you know you are not strong enough for those scenes, skip them because in the end you will still be able to feel every emotion with them.

Next, development of every character, the plot, the writing, everything is just perfect. I didn't want to put it down... You see parts of yourself in them, you scream at the plot twists and you lose track of time reading it.

I love Derek and April and how we follow their love story because it's not like in any other romance book - it's not fast or rushed but instead we see their feelings forming and how much pain connects people. I smiled, laughed, cried, blushed and giggled all over again. I hope that every woman on this planet finds her Derek to love, respect and protect her.

I need the second book immediately! I just know I'm gonna overthink and analize every part of this masterpeace. Read this book as soon as possible because I regret not picking it up sooner. You won't regret any second of your time.

One month later and I'm still thinking about it and plotting the next book so if Adreen needs any ideas, I'm here 😊

'Trying To Endure,' written by Adreen Fernando, is an insightful yet memorable book highlighting realistic issues people face everyday. Characters are perfectly flawed, each given perspectives with diverse testimonies that they deliver throughout the story. Pacing is fairly smooth, with some scenes getting to the point. Overall, a great fictional story about the lives of injustice, romance, and a challenging world.

You know when Cesar A. Cruz said that, art is meant to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.

Trying to Endure serves as an example to this quote.

Adreen takes us into the world where there is nothing which isn’t controlled by the elites, the Families. The way both the sides of the world are portrayed so completely, how wealth is power and if you are wealthy enough you are power.

She draws inspiration and storyline from real world events and gives us different perspectives on how racial discrimination is still very much alive, how the homophobia, the idolisation of rich people, the ignorance towards the poverty stricken masses is affecting our society, how we all, more often than not, turn a blind eye towards it.

To want to survive in a world where misogynistic behaviour is so rampant, the crude remarks, the body-shaming, the catcalling, all so normalised, becomes suffocating.

What you can do? Start calling them out, because Silence is Insanity.

These words said by Bodie, taught by Mike to April, has stuck with me since I’ve read it. It takes just one person to break the bystander syndrome. And April teaches us to speak out, because words hold power, sometimes even more than wealth.

Trying to Endure is so inclusive, i love this thing so much, the versatility of the characters, the storytelling, it contains so many themes that keeps you hooked up to it, wanting to complete it in one seating.

My favourite arc of this book was Derek’s healing, whether it be from addiction or self harm or self sabotage. It makes you realise that you never know what someone’s going through. And it’s never too late to start over and unlearn some things you’ve always known, when they do more harm than good. Derek’s character was so well written, his monologues, insights on different things, his enlightenment, his story with his father, all so intriguing.

I love love love April and Derek so much, there need to be with the truth, to know the truth, even if it means going against what they thought they knew.

And the way Adreen writes the side characters with such extreme depth gives so much meaning to the book, whether it be Jackson with his prosthetic leg or Naila with her vitiligo, Tanner with his ‘different’ skin in the white dominated family, or Derek’s atheism and him overcoming his addiction, or April’s outspoken personality and how even the seemingly strongest person you know also has limits, and breaks; or Luke’s heavy responsibilities and his love for his people, or Bodie getting caught up in the crossfire.

And shoutout to Marlene and Lin for helping their nephews and me gain great insight ;)

The plot keeps plotting and I already can’t wait for the sequel.

You bet I will keep re reading, and keep recommending this to everyone I meet ;))
