Great book that helped me tremendously with understanding my feeling and feeling overwhelmed in the decision I need to make. If you feel like you are stuck in a situation this book can help with your decision making and give you clarity.
While many of the examples in this book draw from large-scale projects, the core principles are universal. Every significant change we pursue in life—launching a startup, switching careers, running a marathon, adopting a new diet, or simply establishing a new daily habit—can be seen as a project. We have certain objectives, face time and resource constraints, and must navigate uncertainty to succeed.
This book does a great job of blending science, strategy, and real-life wisdom to help navigate uncertainty. The ideas are clear, practical, and immediately useful. It’s empowering to learn how to stay resilient and make smarter choices when the future feels unclear.
This book is great, especially if you have big projects to complete. I was trying to get a project done for years, but too many players in the mix. I feel this helps you to develop a plan for the future.
Dealing with uncertainty is something pretty much all of us struggle with to one degree or another and Laurie Bowman has written an extremely helpful book applicable to just about everyone as well. It’s very well written, clear and accessible with many helpful case examples and charts too.
I learned a lot with this book and it really helped me get a better grasp on concepts around decision making methodologies and which ones to use for different scenarios. I had heard of most of them but wasn’t too familiar with the specifics and best use cases. So it was really helpful to get deeper understanding of things like PDCA and Bayesian Thinking. In addition to these well established frameworks, the author also addresses the emerging role of AI in the decision making process.
I especially appreciated his own real-life experiences dealing with major projects around the globe. And beyond these multimillion (and billion) dollar programs where he helped consult with strategic decision making he also includes very personal accounts of failures. This included a particularly vulnerable account not simply a life set-back but having to personally start all over again. So the book covers a broad spectrum of dealing with uncertainty from the individual level to massive and complex private Industry and government projects as well.
The book also included a terrific section on considering a career move which has me recommending it to several friends in the midst of this process themselves. And towards the end, the author ties effective decision making together with an excellent section on emotional intelligence showing how EQ plays a vital role in helping to navigate uncertainty.
I’ll be referencing and recommending this book often. And once again… I’m “certain” you’ll get a lot out of it too.
From the very first chapter, the author bridges the gap between theory and practice. Drawing on plenty of expertise in risk management and complex systems, he translates what could easily be an abstract topic into something immediately useful and relatable.
This book truly gives you practical frameworks that work in real life.
I like how the author acts as a guide vs. a lecturer. He does a good job with blending of neuroscience, behavioral insights, combined with exercises helps you understand how to make better decisions, and also dives into why you react to uncertainty the way you do.
The book is part science, part art, and very actionable. Definitley recommend this book!
Dealing with Uncertainty is a clear, well-organized guide that delivers exactly what the title promises. Laurie Bowman approaches the topic with a steady, no-nonsense tone that makes complex ideas about risk, resilience, and decision-making feel accessible and useful. It’s not flashy or dramatic, but that’s part of what makes it effective. The book is focused on helping readers understand and navigate uncertainty in a realistic, thoughtful way.
The book stands out for its structure and clarity. Concepts are introduced logically, and the writing avoids jargon while still being intelligent and informative. It leans more toward professional and technical readers, but even those outside those fields can take away solid, applicable ideas. If you're looking for a practical way to think more clearly when things feel unpredictable, this is a solid, five-star read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is full of great information, but I'm too right brained to read this analytical data filled book. Anyone who is a metal, digital, or maybe even a visual would enjoy this very much. As a kinesthetic, it's difficult to get through .
