Obviously, this book series is only a recommended read to those are familiar with The Tribe and have watched all 5 seasons. Having said that, I found "A New Dawn" a much more compelling - and frankly, less boring - read than the first book. The story didn't get stuck and A.J.Penn managed to keep the characters mainly plausible and true to their nature.
Loved the twists with Ebony, was surprised to read about several deaths in this book and did enjoy the storyline with Eloise.

Also, Amber & Bray held the center of attention a lot in this book and can't say I had anything against that ;)

Bonus points for the little twist with May's new love interest. FINALLY.

This book was definitely better than the last one. It felt again more like the old The Tribe, back in the city and the mall and even Eagle Mountain. And of course I love it all because its The Tribe, and its the Mall Rats, and everyone I love. Its Ebony who is betraying and plotting left right and center, its the Guardian with his deranged belief in Zoot. Its imagining their beautiful New Zealand accents and crazy outfits. But unfortunately, its not the story I wanted.

Season 1, the Locos dominated. Season 3 (I think?) the Guardian dominated. Season 4 the Technos, and season 5 Mega. Then in the books its Eloise and the Guardian again. Now its going to be the C0llective.

I'd really like to move on from the same old story line every new season; someone invades, the Mall Rats must survive them and save the city. And they do. And then the next tribe invades and it just repeats itself.

I want to know what happened to the Mall Rats who disappeared when the Technos invaded. I want Ryan, Alice, KC, Cloe, even Patsy for gods sake, even Paul, and everyone else who left the show for reasons unknown. We know what happened to Bray, we've got him back now. We've had a fleeting moment with Tai San at the start of this book. This book adds new characters, of course it does, it has to. But it adds Emma and her brother and sister, people who are probably Mall Rats now. You could have replaced those three with three oldies! It's just silly to add in all these new ones. THAT'S NOT WHAT YOUR VIEWERS WANT! IF YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR US PLEASE LISTEN TO WHAT WE WANT DAMNIT. AND PUBLISH MORE BOOKS.

I'm finding it hard to review this book for what it is because I am so disappointed by the story we've got. Face it, you shouldn't have cancelled the show. You should have finished it in a season 6. If your reason for cancelling it was because the actors were too old, then you should have given it a final ending.

The story is interesting because it's the Tribe and I want to know what happened... other than that the book is dreadful. The writing is shockingly poor - I could have done better myself - and it clearly hasn't been proof read. So disappointing. Power and Chaos by Paula Boock was done very well so I had expected a high quality book. This is rambling fan fiction. Waste of money.

Technically it only qualifies as 2 stars, but it gets extra for being The Tribe. Its not something I would recommend for a non-Tribe fan (though I recommend the show, watch it!), but its alright. More exciting than the first one in terms of plot, though felt more rushed and fragmented at times.

Gott, diese Übersetzung war wieder ein Krampf. Das Buch strotzt nur so von Tippfehlern, vergessenen Wörtern etc. Geht gar nicht. :(

Very disappointing follow up. The whole novel felt like The Chosen storyline from Season 2 all over again because we have the new Zootists with The Guardian that dominates the whole plot. I know The Guardian is a good villain but it felt like it was peddling on the same ground again that we already saw in the show. Just wish The Guardian be killed off tbh cause he's a fanatic villain doing the same Zoot cult endlessly which is so overplayed. Nothing interesting is done with the Zoot cult anymore.

They ended the love triangle between Amber/Bray/Jay in the cheapest way possible by having the latter killed off in the ending. That's the best they could do? It's like the moment Bray returned, the writer was like: "Welp we have no need for Jay anymore, so let's kill him off cause Bray is back!"

Whoever AJ Penn is clearly never did his research on the show properly, cause there's so many continuity errors:
1) Chapter 4 had Salene recalling that Ryan saved her from jumping to her to death, when it was actually Salene who saved Ryan in Series 2. Salene did attempt suicide but that was in Series 3 and she was stopped by Bray and Trudy, NOT Ryan. How on earth did the writer mix that up?

2) Chapter 8 had Ebony reuniting with The Guardian again, she thinks in her mind that the mystery is solved concerning where he fled to after the Techno invasion. But this directly contradicts the show because everyone (including Ebony) believed The Guardian had been wasted by Alice at the end of Series 3. Yet none of the characters are shocked by the fact he is still alive and that Alice never killed him after all.

3) Chapter 21 had Jack lamenting he never thought he'd been locked up in the Mall's grille gates, even though Tribe Circus trapped him there in Series 1. Glaring error.

You'd think the creators of the show would know their own franchise more than the fans, but oh wait forgot AJ Penn has nothing to do with The Tribe's creation. Even still, it's no excuse for someone who attempts to write sequels for the show, cause you should know what your job requires. Even the creator missed these errors, how careless. The editor doesn't do their job at all.

I have no care for any of the new characters either, none of them catch my interest like those from the show. There doesn't seem to be any effort to make them interesting so we want to know about them more.

Also, they brought back Tai San in the prologue, which is wonderful to know she's alive but she is never mentioned again after that?? I expected she'd reappear towards the end or in the epilogue at least. Very strange writing decision to reveal a character is alive only to have her disappear after the prologue, I was led to believe she might play a role in the novel but not at all.

The final battle with the Zootists in the Mall felt very reminiscent of the Tribe Circus battle in Series 1, the latter is still better executed and is more interesting. It felt like AJ Penn just copied the Tribe Circus battle.

The only good thing was the return to Eagle Mountain and the secrets it revealed, but it's not saying much cause that plot was sidelined and never explored further. Also they killed the useless characters Gel and Darryl, so that's a plus considering they're so unneeded. If only they also get rid of Sammy and Lottie too.

Overall, the novel feels unoriginal and is just dragging the story with an unsatisfying ending. It feels lazy and just seems to be an attempt at making money by dragging The Collective storyline.

Perhaps an octave less exciting than A New World, I still found this book to be exciting and enjoyable.

For nerds such as myself, there was a coded message at the end of the book that readers could decipher using Jack and Ram's code used in the book. So much fun! Though I found the note to be somewhat cryptic, it lead me to believe (and hope!) that there will be another book, hopefully soon!

A.J. Penn continues his continuation of The Tribe with a second novel titled A New Dawn. Penn’s sequel seamlessly continues the events from A New World, beginning relatively soon after the concluding events of the preceding novel. This sequel follows the cast as they begin to unravel the mysteries presented in A New World such as The Collective, The Zootists and the United Nations survival fleet. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, belonging, religious fanaticism, power and artificial intelligence.

The novel begins with a prelude focusing on Taisan, who is captured and taken to the Garden of Eden and presented to a man which is inferred to be Kami, the leader of the Collective. This sets the scene of the novel with the unnamed man displaying imagery of all the Mall Rats both past and present in front of Taisan, demonstrating that he is well versed with her former tribe, and then states he demands to know everything about the facility at Eagle Mountain.

In A New Dawn, Amber is caught between a rock and a hard place, as she is now reunited with her former lover and father of her child, Bray. She has to choose between him and her current romantic partner Jay. She must choose one man despite holding love and admiration for both. The novel makes us empathetic towards Amber, and makes us question our own moral compass if we were in her situation. The obvious choice is Bray, as he was her original soulmate and father of her child, but does that mean what her and Jay share should be voided? Jay had been the adoptive father to her son, and they both shared a near – death experience on the trawler together amongst all the tribulations and hardships throughout Ram and then Mega’s tyrannical reign in the city. These two souls are intertwined despite Bray’s sudden appearance. It is much like in the film Pearl Harbour (2001) wherein the wife remarries after believing her husband had died during battle. However upon his return, the woman is faced with an excruciatingly hard decision of what action to take. In the end, Amber concluded that she had always given her heart to Bray and he was her child’s father. It was right for them to be together, as it was not by choice that they had departed. Ironically, the choice was also made by fate as Jay perished during the battle for the mall, which was occurring somewhat simultaneously. Another union featured in this novel is that of May and Salene. May had held a place in her heart for Salene since season 5, where she developed feelings for her friend as the two bonded over the loss of their beloved Pride. May was overwhelmed at Salene’s wholesome and good natured personality, and soon realised her affection building towards her friend. Throughout the show May had conveyed these feelings towards Salene in a subtle way, so after the passing of Zak they became unbearable, culminating in her confession and their passionate union along the beach. Lex strengthens his passion for Lia throughout the novel, which eventually surpasses his physical attraction to her and he soon becomes transfixed by her spirit and personality. Love is a powerful theme in The Tribe, however it can be misleading.

Trudy was swept – at one point literally – off her feet by Connor; the lone marine commander of the sea vessel Nemo. Connor entered the tribe and manipulated his audience swiftly and efficiently. He charmed Trudy and the others effortlessly. After beginning their extraction mission in the city, Connor betrayed Trudy and her adoration and trust in him, and handed her in to the Zootists – he was revealed to be a bounty hunter all along. He planned to sell his adoptive tribe to the Guardian for a handsome reward. This is an act of ultimate betrayal and selfishness. Connors fate is a touch of irony. Much like a boomerang, what you give in life is what you get, and for Connors swift betrayal, he too is double crossed as the Guardian decides to sacrifice him to Zoot alongside the Mall Rats. Ebony is another character who has a habit of betrayal and self-centred behaviour, displayed countlessly throughout the show and the novels. In this tale, Ebony decides she must seize a position of power as she did with Blake, and thus passionately leads an assault on the Mall Rats and captures many during their refuge at the United Nations Army Base. Ebony is always evaluating her position and apathetically betraying whoever she must in order to reach a higher stance. Upon seeing the treatment of Connor and the brawl which emerges between the Mall Rats and the Zootists, Ebony realises that when her usefulness to Eloise and the Guardian’s cause is fulfilled she will most likely suffer the same fate as Connor. Ebony experiences the epiphany that she had been manipulated all along, despite believing it was her who was in control. She finds redemption in commanding her loyal Zootist followers to outcast the Guardian and reinforce the Mall Rats during this fateful fight for control of the city, and more importantly their very lives. In a heartbeat, Ebony’s decided course of action is responsible for the survival and liberty of countless people. Could this be another instance of Ebony acting purely out of self-preservation, or has she finally realised where she belongs? Connor also decides to redeem himself by aiding the Mall Rats and protecting Trudy throughout the battle, however isn’t successful in his ambitions to atone for his wrongdoings and make amends with Trudy. She cannot forgive Connor for his outright betrayal of her trust and love, and thus Connor leaves his temporary comrades to where he truly belongs, aboard the Nemo.

In A New Dawn, Penn explores the concept of home. The Mall Rats were cast adrift and sought refuge on an island in the preceding novel as their home was stripped from them amidst the chaos of a new chemical warfare attack. In this novel we see the characters head back to their original home and conclude the novel by reclaiming it. However where one belongs is not limited with just the location of their residence. Many characters realise who they belong with in this novel, such as Lia and Lex, Amber and Bray, May and Salene, and even Lottie and Sammy. Sometimes you have to fight to protect your home and your family. As they say, ‘family is what makes a house a home’, the Mall Rats tirelessly fight for each other and three characters pay the ultimate price for that freedom; Darryl, Gel and Jay. They fought for what they thought was right, they fought for their family.

Ebony resolves that she no longer belongs with the Zootists among other followers who realise that they no longer wish to serve in the cult under the Guardian. A New Dawn further investigates the cult mentality and the influential nature of deities. As Ebony and Ram were captured by Eloise and the Zootists, Penn was able to convey the inside and outs of the cult and to reveal The Guardian to be alive and once more in a position of influence. The Guardian is as deranged and mentally unstable as he was during the height of The Chosen, severely distorting his reality with the Zootist ideologies. He clearly suffers from derealisation and depersonalisation disorders, and perhaps a form of schizophrenia, as he consistently seeks council from Zoot. During the battle for the mall, The Guardian wishes for death and to be reunited with the Almighty One. The Zootist religion had grown and acquired many followers, and is now an efficient and powerful war machine. Eloise had realised the potential in this and manipulated The Guardian and others in order to command a formidable army of subservient and brainwashed followers. During the novel we realise that an aim of The Collective – and Zootists – is to populate the earth with slaves and ‘muscle’ for their army. There are many interesting aspects of the cult faith which Penn has been able to display for us. The Zootists withhold the youth from their mothers and commit them to intensive thought reform schools in order to indoctrinate them into the faith. When Bray investigates the compound he realises that the legend of Zoot has been immortalised in artwork with many of his fellow Mall Rats now being considered venerable people, having witnessed the almighty Zoot in the flesh. The strength of their brainwashing methods is highlighted when Aras, a member of Emma’s old tribe the Roaches, is shown completely foregoing his old self and disregarding any notions of individualism, he showcases complete subservience to Zoot. In essence, the Zootist cult is an example of how one can maintain stern control over the masses, and it highlights the innate ability that religions and cults have over its followers. Religion and faith aren’t inherently bad, but Penn illustrates how successful the cult mentality is at altering an individual’s mind to the extremity of the Zoot devotees.

A New Dawn also focuses on the importance that technology has in the balance of power. Eloise is sent to retrieve the contents in ‘level three’ of the Eagle Mountain base by Kami. She escorts her prisoners to the mountain base and commands Jack and Ram to uncover the secrets of the base. To everyone’s surprise, they reach level three after Jack decodes the password. Amidst level three is a giant supercomputer which it referred to as K.A.M.I, the Knowledge Artificial Machine Intelligence. Alongside this unknown entity is a collection of cryogenic pods which house adults of whom are alive inside. This development highlights a mystery shrouding the identity of Kami, is he an A.I supercomputer such as the K.A.M.I machine? Ram suspects he is, as no one has ever met Kami in the flesh. He also suggests that to organise such a powerful machine with so many cogs, one would need to have such a fast processor, like an AI. The discovery of real living – albeit dormant – adults is a shock for Jack especially, having chased the notion of them being alive so strongly in the past. Amber also, is overwhelmed. The events that follow highlight the stark difference between the groups, as Eloise purposefully and without remorse, decides to murder the immobile and vulnerable adults by shutting down their cryogenic pods, asserting that “they all had their time”. This act highlights Eloise’s nature and lust for ultimate control. Eloise was raised by two military parents whom gave no affection to her, which could account for her apathy and coldness, which could have resulted in her satisfaction in murdering the adults as a symbolic act of revenge against her own parents. Ram soon discovers the artefact of Kami’s desire, a gold plated hard drive which is suspected to have all the knowledge of the adults – and consequently the knowledge to force any rival into obedience under threat of chemical warfare, as it has been discerned amongst the Mall Rats that the true cause of the virus that wiped out the adults was a deliberate third world war, not an chemical accident. There had been too much preparation by the United Nations survival fleet and many other factors which surmounted to this opinion. Ram commands K.A.M.I to shut down all systems and the Mall Rats manage to overpower Eloise’s forces, capturing her with the help of Bray, Lex and Lia. After mourning the lives of their fallen victims, Ram stresses the importance of returning to Eagle Mountain to access the knowledge on the hard drive, as he claims that the invasion of the Collective will be “the biggest display of power they had ever seen”. This statement singlehandedly solidifies the importance of technology in terms of power and control.

A New World pays excellent homage to The Tribe, as Penn once more leaves us with a cliff hanger. A few, in fact. The Coda section of the novel describes Slade and Ruby with their new daughter named Alexis a few months after the carnage of the previous chapters. A suspicious drone suddenly flies overhead, and after monitoring the new family unit for a moment, it flies away. This leaves us to wonder, is it the work of The Collective? This development is amplified upon decoding the puzzle on the final page. Penn leaves us with a final letter, written in the same code that Jack had to decipher in the Eagle Mountain base. After hours of solving, the page reads:

“CLASSIFIED FOR YOUR EYES ONLY AS A DEDICATED MEMBER OF OUR TRIBAL FAMILY. FEW COULD HAVE FORESEEN, EVEN MY OWN ANCESTORS, THAT ALEXIS WAS DESTINED TO PLAY SUCH A VITAL PART IN THE TRIBAL MYTHOLOGY. BUT THAT IS ALL REVEALED IN A NEW TOMORROW. AND THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE FUTURE. HOW – I’M SURE YOU WILL ASK. UNDERSTANDABLE. GIVEN THAT TIME TRAVEL HAS YET TO BE DISCOVERED. EVEN FOR MY GENERATION. BUT IT WILL. IMAGINE HAVING THE ABILITY TO GO BACK AND SEE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN. IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT LONG AND HARD ENOUGH, THE MYSTERY IS IN A NEW DAWN, WHICH WILL GIVE YOU THE ANSWER. UNTiL OUR NEXT CONTACT. FAREWELLL. WE WILL MEET AGAIN. LORD KAMI. GENERATION-99.”

This emphasises the importance of Alexis the daughter of Ruby and Slade. What is her importance to tribal mythology? Was she a character in A New Tomorrow, the sequel show to The Tribe? Time travel? If the message was written by Kami, from the future, does that mean he has the ability to traverse time? Is this related to the AI K.A.M.I machine? Where is the answer in A New Dawn?! Is Generation -99 merely a nod to honour the year the show aired?

There is much to ponder and much to discover, hopefully all will be discussed in the next and most recent book in the Tribe universe, (R)Evolution!

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and can’t wait to indulge in the next book in this series. Great work Mr Penn.

A huge improvement from the last novel. However, I’ve read better fanfics than these continuations. It’s been a major letdown to see how the series has digressed. It went from navigating through a new world while dealing with the beginning stages of adulthood to this weird and confusing sci fi fiction.

Again, a fun time feeling nostalgic while sated with this continuance to the show I loved so much. I may have to go back and watch it all over again...because The Tribe is available on YouTube.

Where the first book somewhat dragged, this one was quicker in pace with more action. The quality of the writing was better this time with grammar and such. And I am thrilled that the action returned to its roots.

Not going to lie, I totally nerded out and spent quality time figuring out the code at the end of the book.

I'm going to hold off on reading the third and most recent book; I don't want to be done with The Tribe yet.

I was a huge fan of the tribe TV series so I was disappointed it ended after season 5 but thankfully now the series has continued in the form of books/audiobook this is the 2nd audiobook what would have been season 7

I loved it I enjoyed catching up with those characters I loved it was a great story it was fun and brought back all the reasons I loved the tribe, there's also alot of new characters I would like if they would bring back so old characters as some just went missing. If you loved the TV series then you will love this

While the fanfiction quality problems still appear in this follow up to "The Tribe: A New World" if you liked that book, this one will not disappoint. It continues the story threads and reintroduces Bray, one of the original characters of the New Zealand science fiction soap opera. However, the opening chapter is weird because it introduces another character that we think is going to play a big role but never returns to her. In the end we are left wondering if the author planned a third book given the loose plot threads.

I really liked the continuation of the story and finding out what happens to the characters I love but there are still some unanswered questions. I still would like to know what happened to some of the other Mall Rats that were taken by the Technos. I need more.

After being reunited with amber and the other Mall Rats, Bray and his friends must take on the Collective. Some friends could be lost along the way but new friendships will also be forged.

As someone who adored the series and still watches it religiously through YouTube, A New Dawn gave me the closure that I needed following the end of the TV series. I went through ups and downs reading this, and when those 3 characters died, I bawled like a baby. I'm praying for a third book because I need to know what's with the drone at the end, and what happened with Tai-San. You can't start a book off with her being brought somewhere, and not mentioning her at all for the rest of the book!

An easy read and loving connection back to the characters of The Tribe. Despite mostly following the same format of the previous books (and series), this book brings surprises and twists, and finally answers questions that have been outstanding since Series 1. There are some grammatical and spelling errors which I was easily able to look past, given my eagerness to immerse in this world. All in all, I loved it.

I really enjoyed this second book in the hopefully continuing book series about the "The Tribe" TV series. This book, much like the first one "A New World", can only be recommended to fans of said TV series or those who are familiar with it.

I was delighted to see all my favorite characters back in action and searching for answers in order to understand the past as well as trying to make a better future for them and the generations to come.

Characters (NO SPOILERS):
A. J. Penn's character portrayal is (mostly) spot on. Personally, I could imagine the original actors portraying their respective characters actually saying and acting out the conversations in the book which made the reading experience even more enjoyable for me.

Plot (SPOILERS ARE MARKED AS SUCH):
The plot is (at least it was for me) full of surprises and gives new insights into our beloved Tribe world (KIND OF A SPOILER MAYBE?) with old and new places to be (re)discovered (POSSIBLE SPOILER ENDS HERE) answering a couple of questions from the old book. New questions and loose ends are (of course) created as the story line unfolds paving the way for another book.

I very much enjoyed this book. It, however, did not get me as hooked on the story as I feel it should or could have: 4/5 stars.

Ok. So definitely a change of pace from the last book. I've always loved the retro 80s style of The Tribe, and this book totally delivered on that "World War III" aspect, which is what I suspect that code at the end is referring to, along with the cryogenic bodies and gold plated hard-drive.

I knew there was a going to be a major character killing but I didn't expect three, especially with two of them hardly being developed in the series. It felt rushed.

Also, mentioning Tai San in the beginning and then never seeing her again is really frustrating. I was expecting a cliff hanger like the last one, but it just seems like the closure of one stage of the story into another arc of some kind.

I never liked the naming of the babies after tribe members. It's so cheesy. I mean they've all lost their parents right? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to name them after all the adults that have died?

I really want to know what happened to the ecos.... and of course the missing mall rats.

Despite editing and spelling errors, I would definitely recommend this book to all Tribe fans.

I loved the tribe when I was growing up and couldn't wait until Saturday to watch the latest episode on channel 5. I think I can safely say that a lot of tribe fans where gutted when the series was cancelled so when I found out that they were continuing on in book form I was so excited. I proceeded to purchase the first book 'A New World' in 2012 and loved the concept of old characters reappearing and also introducing new ones. 'A New Dawn' continues on with the storey and ties up a lot of loose ends that were left open at the end of the first book but it also introduces some new plots aswell. I hope that there is another book in the making and cant wait to carry on reading about the tribe and hope that more old characters reappear.

Much weaker than it's prequel, and I only kept reading because I needed to know if Bray & Amber finally get together again - as "The Tribe" had been a huge part of my childhood.
In that process, shedding some shocked tears during the last chapter, for things I didn't see coming.
And the end provided a new storyline for a 3rd book some day.
