Volume 13 "Creation Nia" of Date A Live certainly delivers on what makes the series an entertaining read for me: not taking itself too seriously with its silly premise, great surprisingly well developed characters (even if based on typical tropes), a tense story and the occasional eye roll moment. The spirit Nia, a manga artist who had been imprisoned by DEM for the last few years, is a good addition, and there is something ironic about a spirit only loving 2D characters in a LN story. The resolution of that conflict is surprisingly mundane for this series at least until the very few last pages that is, just start a manga selling competition in ComCon.
Having said that, I am not entirely sure adding more characters to the cast is going to do them good since that means focus is going to be spread even more over an already too big group of characters as is. The time travel aspect hinted at makes me weary although considering the author handled it in the Origami arc he has earned some trust in that regards from me. Similarly, the main villain is being depicted as a bit too powerful and successful which for me always raises the question on how the main heroes can win (and this is one of those series where I expect them to win) without making the already told story feel pointless. I will see, but as long as the journey stays as entertaining as before, I am not going to worry too much about it.
All in all, I enjoyed this volume, which in a way went back to its roots until the last few pages at least. Looking forward to the next volume.
Fucking finally! They give Shido some sort of growth in this story. Not just personality wise but in his abilities. Honestly, though, his personal growth has been a long time coming. I feel like Shido had grown more insufferable with his whimpy demeanor with the girls. So having him mature a tad was a fantastic fresh breath of air. He showed some annoyance towards advancements, and it was great! I enjoyed the story and the secrets, but im finally able to enjoy the MC. Woohooo. Can't wait for the next book.
