Christine Terhune Herrick (1859-1944) was an American author who wrote mostly about housekeeping. She published articles in Harper's Bazaar and was also a journalist.
Yet the boys would have been outraged if any one had applied the word "theft" to this appropriation of the property of others. It was "swiping"! Between this and stealing there was a well-defined distinction. The boy who helped himself to what he needed from the miscellaneous possessions of another boy "swiped" them, and was thought none the worse of by his companions. But if he had taken even a nickel in money it would have been stealing and he would not have been tolerated.
An alternate title could be "Boy Mom, 1913." The author writes as though she's a self-righteous mother talking about her own son (or occasionally multiple sons), but right at the start, she admits that it's based on her experiences, others' experiences, and fiction. The part on boarding schools was fairly informative (see quote below), but the rest felt like an opinion piece from a mother whose life revolves around her son, a son who was unusually close to her. I read it for vague research, but I don't know that it was suitable for my purposes.
