Good piece of writing. I liked the pace of the book and the thriller quotient, being a sucker for thrillers. The plot is about a series terrorist bombings executed all over America and how the main character (female FBI agent for a change), thwarts the last and final attempt of the terrorists to create a Hiroshima-like catastrophe. The best thing is the author knows how to place the twists and turns in the plot. However, the involvement of CIA in the terror plot seems far-fetched and hard to believe.

The book however ends abruptly and you need to visit a website and request for a postquel which is then mailed to you or you can download this from the author's website. This is a bit irritating. Also the main villain disappears at the end and you know that a sequel of the book is in store.

Verdict - 3 1/2 stars purely for the author's skill.

This is a thrilling and timely book. It deserves to be read by all action readers. It reminded me of a Tom Clancy novel, but not as tedious. It's filled with government intrigue and a strong but believable heroine. Goodman addresses the issues our country faces in today's world, made perilous by terrorists, and the extreme effort required to keep us all safe. Looking forward to his next FBI thriller.

What if the difference between a group of terrorists forcing America to its knees and saving the American way of life was just a heartbeat in time? In a country used to feeling safe, filled with government agencies keeping watch over any threats, one twisted zealot slithers past under the radar and plans the annihilation of the American dream. The lines of good and evil are blurring between agencies when the clichéd rivalries between government lawmen turns into an interagency bloodbath as one agency oversteps its bounds, becoming part of the terror, part of the planned death and destruction. One email service provider, malicious coding and one powerful CIA leader, at his breaking point, in over his head and the avalanche of doom has begun. The determination and strength of one FBI agent, Jana Baker and the computer genius of a geek named Cade may become the country’s first and last line of defense. Dozens of known targets, and then the shock of uncovering one more, destination unknown has everyone reeling. In a furious and frantic search to find the missing suicide bomber, to capture the leader and to end the nation’s code red status, it all comes down to a matter of seconds…

I’m still coming down from the gut-clenching, edge of my seat, turbo ride that Nathan A. Goodman sent me on in The Fourteenth Protocol. Deeply intriguing, beyond the realm of “pretend,” I was there; I could smell the fear, the hatred, the cordite and blood that was shed. With characters firmly planted and nurtured to their full potential, Mr. Goodman brings every page to life, one horrific twist at a time. I was fascinated by how well Mr. Goodman demonstrated how easily these groups can carry on with their plans, unnoticed.

If the idea of getting lost in an intriguing plot, devious twists and unknown outcomes sounds good, then you will love The Fourteenth Protocol.

Really, I would rate this at 3.5 stars if I could. But it falls short of 4 stars for several reasons.

First, the good points. The major characters are engaging despite not being tremendously deep. But this is a very fast paced book so there isn't a huge amount of time for character development. But what is given is credible and leaves room for growth as the series continues.

The pace is quite fast. It feels like you are reading what could easily be an action film. If action in a novel is what you crave, The Fourteenth Protocol will not disappoint.

But if you need to think about what you are reading and like it to stick close to facts, the book will have you scratching your head in some places. For example, the author references a law passed during the Abraham Lincoln administration with some specific detail that made me want to read about it. Apparently it is a totally fictional reference. It seems pointless to provide that much detail when the point being made is only marginally relevant. Another example is the idea that nuclear fuel pilfered from a nuclear power plant could be turned into a tactical nuclear weapon. I actually worked for a company that generates electricity via nuclear power plants. This just isn't possible without massive amounts of reprocessing and enrichment of the fuel in a high tech lab.

The ending of the book drags on a bit after the climax. I understand why as the author wants to reuse these characters and continue their story. But after the breathless pace of the novel it was a letdown.

If the faults I list won't bother you then this book will be a good way to pass some time. I'll likely read more in the series, but I won't drop everything to get to the next book in the series.

Cliffhanger Without A Cliff!

I regretfully have to say that I cannot recommend this book. I know that I will not be reading anything else from this author. I hate cliffhangers but this was beyond ridiculous. It left you with a very important unresolved ending. And then the author said you could get the ending by submitting your email and there is no second book on Amazon. Very frustrating.
I also thought that the storyline was OK. Although (Spoiler) I do think killing off a main, likable character ridiculous and some of the dialect insulting to this southern girl.
Sorry that I got so invested in a story that I have no way to finish!

It was interesting but something about the writing bugs me. Is it because every response is too dramatic “don’t wait for warrant just do it now now”, “get that tracker on the car or we will loose him. Do it now right now”. Or maybe it’s because while she is a strong female lead she always is portrayed as a supermodel with at least one male character completely infatuated with her. Seems unnecessary as the terrorist story is very good.

Its fast. Its okay. Its clean. But, its not much nerve wracking or deep or anything. It too long to finish. Tad repetitive. Could have been tighter.

Special Agent Jana Baker is again thrown in to unmasking a terror plot that has random acts of terror hitting sites in small and bit town America. When suspicion falls on a big E-mail server company in Atlanta she ends up working with one of the server technicians who is also a long time friend of another FBI agent in an effort to unravel the terror groups plans. Things go badly down hill when they discover who they are confronting as they attempt to secretly make of with information from a laptop from the office of the server company. As more information is uncovered it become a race against time to discover and stop the last major attack that is planned and being executed. I will be looking to get more of this series for my TBR pile.

My Thoughts

This book was written brilliantly! I loved the pace and the action. It is a clever blend of many of the suspense/action writers I love - Tom Clancy and Stephen Coonts. Plus, there is the well-written, could be true, has done his research feel of a lot of the Michael Crichton.

The bit of this book that stood out the most for me was that fact that Goodman has placed a strong female lead in the midst of the book. It is great to have a smart, suspenseful read that actually has a female lead who is intellectual and strong, rather than dependent.

I also love the character created for the main male, Cade, as he isn't weak, just because we have a strong female. He is still very intellectual, good at his job and able to cope and work with a strong lead, of the opposite sex.

The action-packed writing of this book kept me on the edge of my seat, ready to fly through the pages - curious about what was going to happen next. All of the details were in depth enough to make the events seem plausible and real, and seemed on par with what may happen in a really scenario, such as this. Even with all these details, it still was able to keep the pace moving as swiftly as needed to make it have a sense of urgency, to match the plot.

I liked the choice in secondary characters as well. I found myself imagining the characters, personality, clothing and all, as I felt like I knew them well by the end of the story. I also felt that they matched the story completely. I would have expected characters like Rupert Johnston in a book of this nature, with his hard, military exterior.

OVERALL: I highly recommend this book! It is a fab, suspenseful, military read. It is on par with similar style authors and really is addicting, you find yourself having to force the book closed at the end of the day, as you want to see what happens next. It is a book that is appropriate for 16+, in my opinion and would be enjoyed by all those who like action and suspense.

On his way to work, Cade Williams, a technical administrator for a giant e-mail service provider, Thoughtstorm, hears on the radio that somebody bombed a Little League baseball game in Tucson, Arizona. Settled in his office, he is dragged to the secretive 17th floor that handles government traffic to fix a major technical problem. A few days later, his boss tells him he will be working on the 17th floor. Jana Baker, a rookie FBI agent, is working in the counterterrorism squad in Atlanta investigating the bombing, tailing the perpetrators to the Thoughtstorm building! Another bombing takes place and the FBI discover that a sequence of bombings will be carried out by Islamic jihadists, culminating in a single massive attack – orchestrated by the President and the CIA. During a desperate raid on the Thoughtstorm building, Cade and Jana obtain documents that identify the jihadists and the targets, culminating in a race to apprehend the terrorists and prevent a national disaster. The climax will leave you clutching the sides of your chair.

‘The Fourteenth Protocol’ takes the reader on a whirlwind ride that doesn’t let up until the final page. The fast-paced story leaves no room to pause and reflect or you will miss something important. Nathan A. Goodman’s writing is crisp and eloquent, a pleasure to read. I would have liked the plot and the characters to be more developed, giving me insight into their motives, hates and desires, particularly the developing relationship between Cade and Jana. As a reader, I like to snuggle with a character and find out what he or she really thinks, but this lack is more than made up with constant action and plot twists. If you like tense drama and conspiracies, ‘The Fourteenth Protocol’ will be a thriller.

The Fourteenth Protocol
by Nathan A Goodman

Its not the best book I have ever read but it is not bad. I had to get into it and once I did I really enjoyed it.

Cade works on the 16th floor of an E'mail providing service. He never goes to the 17th floor and worries there maybe something wrong with the 17th floor. Then out of the blue he gets a call to go the 17th floor. As he gets to the lift he is shocked by the security levels and when he gets to the 17th floor he realises he is in a very different place. It looks the same but does not feel the same but can not put his finger on the reason.

The server bank is no happy and sirens are going off and people are panicking that the computers are going to crash. An email being transferred is causing the computer banks to surge.

Cade is tasked with finding out what is happening and then everything goes red and there is only second to sort out the issue.

As he is searching through the data he sees that the Email is going sending and receiving info at the same time and the data is enormous, then suddenly everything stops and goes quiet and the server banks go back to working as normal, What has happened?

Cade goes back to the 16th floor and does not realise he is being followed but by whom.

There is a devastating incident in Tucson, Arizona a bomb at a little league game. Is this a nutter or is it terrorism at its worst.

I will be looking for another book to read by this author

Cade is the prototypical computer geek, shy and awkward around women, and obsessed with Jody Foster, especially in her role as Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs. Jana is a beautiful young FBI agent right out of Quantico - basically, she's Clarice Starling. You just knew these two were going to be thrown together.

This book is pure adrenaline-infused action. It's the kind of story that would appeal to a hormone-laden teenage boy who loves first-person shooters, and my rating and this review are made with that demographic in mind. The plot is a mix of James Bond, 24, and Call of Duty. It owes more to the author's vivid imagination than to reality, but for those who are more interested in carnage and car chases than realism, this book is for you.

The book is the author's first, and it shows. There are eye-rolling moments here and there. The scene where Cade and Jana first meet is particularly cringe-inducing, but it also has a certain charming innocence to it. The language is a bit strong for teens, but maybe I'm being naive about what they hear around school these days.

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! I'm speechless!

What a story...brilliant! Believable characters and story line that draws a reader in and keeps him reading and biting fingernails. As the story develops you sense something deeper than the obvious conspiracy. The ending may leave you with as many questions as answers. Some strong language but only what would be expected given the situation. No explicit sexual scenes, but given the subject matter, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone younger than mid adolescence depending on the maturity of the teen. A parent may wish to read it first. I think this book should be a best seller. If there is no sequel, I'll be forced to read it again, looking for clues to unresolved questions. This is one of those books that you don't finish and forget; you'll continue to wonder what you might have missed. Wow!

Step inside the car and strap yourself in. (Click, click, click) You're on the roller coaster ride of your life! Minor bombings around the country are a real concern for the FBI but when the terrorists escalate their plans the tension mounts and you continue up that track (Click, click, click) reaching for that pinnacle where there's no stopping. Tensions mount and you cannot put this book down. When you reach the top (Click, click, click) there will be no stopping. And then (Whoosh!) down you go; heart racing, adrenaline rushing through you until the end.

This book is one of the best books I've read all year. Hours after finishing my heart was still racing... and that is a testament to a damned good book!

Protocol

I actually had to read the first part twice to get into it. After the second time I could not stop.reading! The story line was different in that our own government seemed to be in the midst of a terrorist attack and it seemed to be following some of our present day history events. The excitement in the story of not knowing how this was going to end and more and more characters involved made for exciting reading. At the last page I scrolled on and then back because I did not want the story to be over! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that likes intrigue tied through and around present day events.

The Fourteenth Protocol is smart, intricate, and adrenaline fueled. It will satisfy readers of Tom Clancy with it’s brilliant action and political intrigue. A strong female lead is something that I really enjoy in these types of novels, and seeing FBI Agent Jana Baker working to stop the perpetrators was a real delight. Excellently written and paced, Goodman delivers a thrill ride that you won’t soon forget.

Looking forward to the sequel

FBI thriller that conveys what many people are currently thinking about as a post 9/11 nation and threats of terrorism. I enjoyed the characters, their accents, and learning a bit about the NSA. I'm looking forward to the sequel and feel compelled to read LEGACY OF ASHES, HISTORY OF THE CIA as I wait.

Intricate thriller with engaging characters, detail akin to Tom Clancy, pacing from Robert Ludlum, and an interesting combination of resolution of the primary conflict with cliff hangers for the individual characters. Undoubtedly the best thriller I've read in years.

poorly researched

Lots of unnecessary, uneducated mistakes on technology and some sloppiness elsewhere - they surrounded the building an entire 365 degrees, an MP5 and 4 mags fitting in a fanny pack - that sort of thing. I assume the law enforcement aspect was equally screwed up.

When America is Under Attack, The Fourteenth Protocol may hold the Key

Fledgling FBI Special Agent Jana Baker and her two friends uncover the secrets behind a series of Deadly Terrorist Attacks. The trail they follow is getting deadlier by the minute and accelerating towards a frightening climax. Emotions run high as the trio are faced with taking duty and honour to the limit.

Mr. Goodman blends together the innocence of young love and the terror of unsuspecting victims as he weaves a tale of the ultimate betrayal of trust. The very people who should protect us are the ones leading the insanity. His heroes are young and rushing to prevent more tragedy. Their lives are on the line as they battle against more than simple terrorists. They are caught in a crossfire of epic proportions as they try to put together the pieces and save the day.

High praise for this dramatic story that takes a journey across America as Terrorists attack the most innocent who are simply living their lives. And behind the scenes, there lurks a fear greater than the attacks alone – that we may be our own worst enemy. Sometimes our own fears may lead to our worst choices.

A true page turner.

Agree with other commenters, the ending is a little abrupt, and the -download the post-novella now- cheapens the whole story arc that had been so carefully structured.

Loved the characters, really believable and got you rooting for them, the story was really well carried forward, but again: would have loved to see the loose ends tied better together to add a feeling of the story being it's own stand alone piece, without getting the feeling that the author is building his email list.

Not just with the ending, but there could have been some closure on his father's passing, some mention of what happened to his colleagues from the 16th floor now that they're office space had been demolished, etc.

The book should trump the marketing.

We already bought your product. We read it to the end, so we liked it. You don't need to 'get us', we are literally right there with you all the way.

But will definitely still read the whole series, just hope that there's no more of these cheap growth hacking tricks in the others.

Much better than the first book in the series, Jana doesn't appear initially. A computer geek becomes a central figure in this book, as does a friend of his who just completes FBI training. Terrorists have started hitting smaller targets, including a little league baseball game in a much smaller town. My friends and I have discussed this for years, starting in the late 1980's, that terrorists would disrupt America much more if they hit Smalltown, Anywhere, USA. But I digress. The FBI and CIA get into a major gun battle in an Atlanta office building. Does the President know what is going on? Our computer geek falls head over heels for Jana, Does she like him too? All action finally focuses on a small town festival in Kentucky. That's all of the details I'm giving away. Although I still have some reservations about the plot involving the FBI director and the President, I almost rated this book five stars. You should read it too.

The Fourteenth Protocol by Nathan Goodman
This story was excellent. Well-developed characters masterfully executed plot. It is very well written with only a couple of grammatical errors for example 'off of' as in "... he jumped off of the road".
It was easy to identify with the characters both good and bad. There were lots of twists and turns, enough to keep the reader interested and engaged, but not enough to confuse.
Structure was interesting; different time-lines as much fun to play with as a reader as they probably were as the writer. I am very much looking forward to more in this series. Thank you Nathan.
