Don’t be stressed Eat the Mediterranean diet Avoid sugar and processed junk Don’t restrict But lose weight
Considering she told me 29 (?) times she was a midwife AND a doctor, I expected more than a very watered down summary from other books already published on hormone health.
If you haven’t read a women’s magazine in the past 10 years you might learn something new 🤷🏻♀️
For a positive, she encourages more plants and less meats.
Loads of “period repair manuals” and “hormone health” books for women have hit the market in the last few years (and I’ve read all of them) this might be the least informative and helpful.
I was thrilled to obtain an ARC copy of this book because I have familiar with Aviva Romm and also love researching anything hormone related. On one hand, I really enjoyed many parts of this book. I loved the multitude of more natural remedies to various hormone related issues, and she even lists many that I have personally used and know to help.
One of the things that really bothered me though is the blatant misandry throughout the book. She went overboard on the "girl power" and it distracted from the premises of the book. She even goes as far as telling the reader that they "need" a female doctor. My experience with female doctors has been the opposite of what she claims. I find that the female doctors I have gone to lack empathy and feel because they haven't gone through what I have or felt the same way, that somehow, my experiences or feelings aren't valid. Whereas, most of the male doctors I have had know they have not experienced what I have and are quicker to listen, less likely to dismiss me. I have talked to a number of individuals who have the same experiences as myself. I'm sure it does happen in the reverse sometimes, but I feel like her pool of opinions, women who are following her or go to her, is so strongly biased that it invalidates her argument. Yet, she speaks so black and white, as if she is an expert on the subject because she is a female doctor and she knows some women who have had negative experiences with male doctors. I am very hesitant to dismiss a whole sex of people in a particular profession, like she has, because there are always some bad eggs. By her logic, I should surely dismiss ever going to a female doctor because the way she outlines male doctors is exactly how I was treated by female doctors. My point is, if she wants to give a shout out to other female doctors, that is fine, but she doesn't have to throw male doctors under the bus to make her and other women doctors look good. Actions speak louder than words. She also uses some language in the book, which was distracting and felt out of place.
I enjoyed a lot of the information, but some parts were just too agenda driven and opinion heavy.
women's health guide ✔️ addressing any problems that arise from menstruation ✔️ well researched ✔️ easy to read ✔️ recipes that are absolutely delicious and easy to make ✔️
I was pretty encouraged by the forst couple of chapters and the insights of how different stages of our cycles can effect our bodies and what hormones are in play...but I was increasingly disappointed with the use of corelary studies presented as causal relationships. There were also some spiritualistic practices incorporated that I was willing to overlook if the science was sound but having to sift through both moon worship and iffy research seemed like more work than I was willing to put in at this time. I should note that I was listening to the audiobook version and will likely eventually borrow the hard copy from my library to skim relevant chapters.
I read this book because when someone in a forum asked a question about her hormone health, someone else responded recommending this and another resource. It's not a typical read for me; I'm not overly passionate about learning about health and have usually been happy to let other people tell me what to do. But! Despite living a whole-foods and active lifestyle, as I'm getting older, I'm realizing my body is changing, and I have had a few puzzling things. This book was v helpful! In fact, I am wondering why adults don't give teenage girls books like these instead of letting them learn most information from their peers and media. Aviva Romm is passionate about women's health and hormones and knows her stuff. What I really appreciated is that, being both an MD and a midwife, she wasn't giving pat answers or even old-school, traditional ones; rather, she was recommending a diverse Mediterranean diet, prioritizing sleep, removing endocrine-disruptors, weight-lifting as you age, etc. I've already made some changes to my life while reading this and am freshly motivated because of its info.
3.5 - This book has SO much helpful information. Definitely something I’d love to have a physical copy of to reference back to. Think it’s a great intro into what to know about your hormones and an excellent how-to guide for what steps to take to improve your health.
I got bored about a third of the way through. Let me save you: eat healthy. Exercise. Stop taking ibuprofen. Unplug and get some sleep.
This is every self help book ever only targeted for female hormone health and PMS (but not PMDD, which she says doesn't exist, but then goes on to tell you how to treat it in later chapters).
I think the author thinks she's being more inclusive by saying things like "this books is for all people with vaginas" at the beginning, but she never makes any effort to continue in that vein and only refers to women throughout.
She also states she's against fatphobia, but every hormone issue she talks about includes some mention of losing weight. I think I stopped reading when she talked about fat phobia in terms of not being afraid to eat healthy fats. No ma'am that's not what fatphobia is.
If you are interested in pseudoscience, this book is for you. If you want to hear a 'doctor with years of midwife experience' talk about how you should stop your meds and take herbs instead, this book is for you.
There is no substantial evidence that shows herbal supplements help with PMS. Studies do show that supplements like Omega 3 and Vitamin Bs are not properly absorbed and have no significant improvements on PMS and other symptoms. I've done a ton of research on this, and have experience evaluating clinical trials so can say this with confidence. The research she cites is not statistically significant.
After having difficulty with mood swings, mommy brain, and losing weight after having a baby, I am now convinced our hormones control all sorts of things! There are a lot of good tidbits in here. I appreciated her lists of symptoms for specific issues and especially appreciated the tip that the way to stop stressing is to learn to check in with your body frequently and make changes when you notice you are getting stressed (jaw clenched, shoulders tense, breathing shallowly, etc.). I have made some of the recipes and I think some are off. The seed bread never cooked through even after baking it three times as long as the recipe said and I have found a couple of recipes where there are ingredients missing on the ingredient list. I don't know if the diet is helping balance my hormones yet. Edit: I found the seed bread recipe online. Only 1/3 of the water should be used. Romm divided the recipe in thirds but forgot to reduce the quantity of water. Here's the recipe I found: https://www.lovehealthandhome.com/sak...
This book is packed with great insights as to why so many women have messed up hormones (and resulting unpleasant symptoms), and a comprehensive, hopeful look at what can be changed to find healing (hint: fix your diet and reduce stress). Much of the content lines up with other research I have done so I didn’t learn a ton, but it would be a great book for those new to natural health approaches. I do like the straightforward symptoms lists and all the ideas of what to try for each condition. I also am looking forward to trying some of the recipes.
The author and I clearly have many fundamental differences in worldview, so I definitely don’t endorse all her ideas. Much of that extraneous stuff felt like an agenda/soapbox and should have been left out, IMO, to make the book more focused and widely accessible. But her years of medical experience do well-qualify her to speak on the hormone topic, and I still found this a worthy read.
This book perfectly lays out the way I want to live. It was overwhelming to listen to because there are SOOO many things I want to change in my life, so I’m gonna buy the book and go through it over the next year and slowly make changes.
“Ten years of medical training may mean your doctor knows more about anatomy & physiology than you do but nobody knows you better than you.” (pg. 87). AMEN❗️
Dr. and Author, Aviva Romm, begins this formidable volume by assuring women that they “are not broken” because of the many symptoms and conditions related to hormones gone rogue in women. Dr. Romm is bold in asserting it’s time for women to get real help, outside the male dominated, convenient type we’ve endured for decades. These “things” are not “all in our heads”. She takes time to debunk what’s been the norm, lay out her approach and declare “being a woman is not a disease”.
After the rousing introduction chapter, Romm gets into the medical information and explains how hormones typically work at various stages of a female life. This includes physical, emotional, environmental and historical changes, some of which are quite startling. Romm discusses things like periods, vaginal discharges, ovulation cycles and what they mean or indicate. She uses charts, graphs, self assessment forms and an entire chapter devoted to helping you become your own best advocate.
Part 2 is devoted to those items that can help balance your Hormone Intelligence: food, stress, body clock, gut health, detoxification and cellular repair. Each of these categories has a specific effect on hormones and interacts in an unique way which is thoroughly explained including suggestions on how individuals can effect change for themselves, based on their own needs.
Part 3 deals with advanced protocols for specific conditions: Periods & PMS, PCOS, Endometriosis, Fertility, Uterine Fibroids, Sexual & Vaginal Health and Perimenopause. This entire section is very pro active and while it does provide the “standard” treatment, Romm focuses on her integrative, wholistic approach and suggests various changes in diet, exercises, tinctures, teas, supplements, etc.
The final section includes the recipes which are quite basic. There’s a pantry of ingredients provided that will make cooking simpler. Most ingredients can be sourced from large stores or a WholeFoods type place. Experienced cooks will be fine with this minimalist approach; newbies might have some issues. There are no nutritional values provided, which I found disturbing from a medical professional. The last item in this section is a Botanical & Supplement Quick Reference Guide which I found really useful.
Basic Hormone Balancing, Love Your Gut, Quick and Easy, Detox and Plant Based Vegan are the menus provided in the book. It’s a start but you’ll want to supplement this with a good vegan or plant based cookbook to avoid boredom once you’ve worked thru this program. This is not the strongest part of the book but that’s easily remedied.
An excellent resource for the legions of women who’ve been fighting this battle for years. I, for one, am happy to have both the reference book and the advocate📚
Pros: - included in Kindle Unlimited - author is both a midwife AND an M.D., so an interesting perspective - lots of info - I learned some things I didn’t know - recipes look intriguing
Cons: - too long & repetitive - author is a man-hating feminist - author believes that all male doctors everywhere tell all female patients everywhere that all their symptoms are imaginary - bad language - way too much moaning and groaning about “toxins”
What a quack. Terribly inconsistent and unhealthy advice (never restrict, but fast at least 14 hours a day...don't eat dairy but take all these supplements to get calcium...). Also, she spends literally so many HOURS telling you *about* how she's going to tell you great stuff before she actually tells you anything, that my library loan ran out barely halfway through the audiobook. I'm better off not knowing how it ends.
This book has changed my life. I cried, laughed, and learned so much. It is jam packed with information. Proud to say I just had my first period with ZERO cramps and a healthy 5 day cycle (instead of 10). Thank you Aviva.
This is a must read for women's health & nutrition. I love how Dr. Aviva Romm brings it all together to show us women how to support our "whole" self and to bond with other women in our lives to support one another and lift each other up.
Tons of good information, and lots of hope given for women struggling with seemingly insurmountable issues, but the actual plan is difficult to follow. I bought the book a long time ago mostly for the recipes. I wanted to eat healthier and not "healthier" but the ingredients were often hard or impossible to source and the few recipes I was able to make were less than satisfying.
When she says it's a lifestyle she isn't kidding. There are so many things that I feel aren't realistic for most people. I don't know how many of us can just not accept receipts when shopping (especially for returns, budgeting, or taxes for those of us with small businesses), not using any plastic at all for anything, only eating whole produce that doesn't come in can or plastic, cardio for 1hr+ 4x a week with 30 minutes of weight training each time plus 30 minutes of daily breathing exercises, only having natural materials for furniture, and a wood floor that hasn't been treated with chemicals and wash it daily, no carpet unless it's natural fibre (I've been looking for years and have never seen one at a store), only natural cosmetics, body products, and cleaners, etc. etc. I already do a lot compared to most people I know and I feel like what I do is basically pointless. Also how does she find the time to do everything? I love Dr. Romm, but I don't think she really acknowledges how difficult her way of life is, and that it's not suitable for everyone, even if it would be best for everyone.
There were also some things I read in her book that I felt her knowledge was limited or different based on my experience and/or what I've read elsewhere. Hot flashes are one: Dr. Romm says to ride them out with pride, but if I'm remembering right, Dr. Briden says there's a way to balance your hormones so that you don't have them them at all. Not there yet, but I'd like to not have them when the time comes.
The best part is what I've learned about the good and bad properties of food, adding onto my herbal medicine knowledge. I will take it into consideration when preparing or eating food, continually becoming more discerning of what's going on in my body and ways to alter things for the better.
I definitely recommend that all women read this book and glean the information relevant to them. A lot of it is fascinating.
EVERY woman needs to read at least the first few chapters of this book tbh. I learned so much and Dr. Romm presents all her research and studies with a pretty easy to understand approach. was it overwhelming at times? yes. but if you bookmark, annotate, and highlight the chapters that pertain most to you, you can easily refer back to things (which is what I plan to do). while I don't agree with absolutely everything she encourages like "howling at the moon during your period"... I can tell she's highly educated and passionate about her career and women's health. take what you can from the book, obviously, not everything is realistic or affordable for everybody. I'm just relieved I know more about my own body than schools and other women/doctors never taught me. I also loooved that she included concrete meal plans and recipes toward the back of the book. I've been eating much cleaner because of her guidance. yay for happy hormones!!!!!
This is another one that is so difficult for me to rate! On the one hand, the first half contained so much helpful information, and the writing style is friendly and approachable. The second half of the book felt less approachable, and I feel like it may turn some people off of the entire book. I hesitate to go into full detail about my feelings on this one, because I am just one person, and will still recommend this one to the right person. The information is good, I love the menus and supplement list, but I do feel like you need to be able to take what you want from the book and leave what doesn't work for you.
I have followed this woman for quite some time now and the thing I love the most is how her care and consideration of overall women’s health is at the forefront of everything she does. If we could all have a doctor this willing to understand the complexities of our lives and bodies then we would be a much healthier society. I trust this woman fully! She is so sensible and easy to understand. This should be a health class required read! I highly recommend to all women no matter what stage of life you are in. I guarantee you will take away something from you time spent in this book.
This book provided a lot of great insight into various menstrual cycle and hormonal symptoms, what they mean and how to advocate for yourself within the medical system. Also great recipes throughout the book to get in important, hormone healing and fertility boosting, nutrients through your diet!
Essential read in this season of postpartum (can I still claim that?) and hormone wonkiness. Excellent foreshadowing in anticipation of raising two hormonal girls. Definitely recommend if you don’t mind all of the brazen biological talk.
Some parts are really heavy on the science but it is balanced really well with practical applications. Worth reading for the end. And the recipes are delicious!
