Picked this novel up at a used book sale (1st edition) for 50 cents. Published in 1946 and set about 10 years earlier in New Orleans' French Quarter, the entire novel takes place in one day, starting at 4:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 a.m. the next morning. It is an impressionistic overview of life in the French Quarter during the '30s and has the reader follow different people as they go about their day and weave in and out of each others' lives. Not much plot, but an interesting read nonetheless for the characters and for a sense of the pop fiction of the mid-40's.
An unknown gem from 1946, follows an array of characters throughout the course of a single day in New Orleans around 1940 (pre-US involvement in WWII, when the WPA employed millions, before people had televisions in their homes, and well before the Civil Rights movement) -- just wonderful writing, as good as anything I have ever read, and better than most.
Book has some great insight into the french quarter. Many character leaps and no real plot line fault this book. Was a push to finish as I lost interest about half way through.
