Madrona Island #1

Madrona Sunset

Rate this book
Welcome to Sunset Harbor, Washington, nestled on beautiful and remote Madrona Island, where the main entertainment on Friday nights is a high school football game, everyone knows everyone's business, the pace is slow, and the residents wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Meet a wounded warrior suffering from paralyzing guilt and a woman pining for her dead husband--both damaged souls craving comfort for a moment or a lifetime.

Mandy Walters' husband died a hero in the Middle East while saving another man. Three years later, Mandy is struggling to move on and make a viable business of her partially remodeled bed and breakfast on Madrona Island. When a mysterious, handsome stranger shows up and offers to finish her remodel in exchange for room and board, Mandy reluctantly accepts, needing his assistance more than she'll admit.

Brody Jenson has come to the island to pay a debt, even though it's taken him three long years. Reluctant to tell Mandy he's the one her husband died saving, he sets himself up to help her, but she helps him just as much. When the time comes to leave, Brody is torn between this loving woman and his driving desire to conquer the next challenge.

Can the laid-back island life heal a damaged, adrenaline junkie like Brody or must he walk away to save them both?

USA Today bestselling author Jami Davenport writes sexy contemporary, new adult, and sports romances, including Gone Missing, Seattle Sockeyes, and The Scoring Series.

Jami lives on a small farm near Puget Sound with her Army Ranger-turned-plumber husband, a Newfoundland drool monster, and a prince disguised as an orange tabby cat.

Jami worked in IT for years and is also a former high school business teacher but recently achieved a life-long dream of being a full-time author. A horse lover since birth, Jami showed dressage horses for over thirty years. Now she gardens and goes glamping, along with other travelling adventures. She's a lifetime Seahawks and Mariners fan, and has season tickets to the Seattle Kraken hockey team. She still misses her SuperSonics.

An avid boater, Jami has spent countless hours in the San Juan Islands, a common setting in her books. In her opinion, it's the most beautiful place on earth.

First book I've read by this author. Loved it. It's hard to move on when the one person you've loved has been killed in the line of duty. Brody promised Frank that he would see that Mandy recovers and moves one. It's taken time for Brody to come to Madrona Island as he has been healing. He needs to follow through as Frank died while saving him. In the meantime, Mandy is working as a bartender while trying to fix up the house that was left to her. The back taxes ate up a lot of the money she received when Frank died. A bad contractor started the repairs then left with the money. Brody makes her a deal, he will fix up the place instead of paying rent. He knows he is a wondering soul, doesn't stay in one place for long. He is falling for Mandy. She is a stay put girl. Now Brody gets talked into helping out with the football team, especially with the quarterback. Only Connor thinks he doesn't need any help. They find out after the first game that he needs a lot of work. Brody is now helping with the team & fixing the house. The house should be finished by the end of the season. Only Brody will be leaving. He has given his word that he will return for a job. Mandy is upset because she knows she has fallen in love with him. In the end she finds out that Brody knew Frank. Only Frank called him Hawk. Connor has asked him to stay. To help him get in shape for next year. Brody tells him he has to go. He gave his word. Connor tells him that everybody leaves on him. So while he was in The Middle East, he was missing Madrona Island. He was thinking he could go back to coaching the kids. But mostly he is missing Mandy. So, he shows up at Christmas. The whole house goes quiet. Brody gets down on one knee, which is hard for him to do & asks her to marry him. Can't wait to read the next book in this series. Thank you for letting this book be part of The Hometown Heroes box set.

The book opens with our protagonist, Mandy, serving drinks in a small town bar. She's a young widow who had married her childhood sweetheart. Her husband had been a man of adventure and that had caused his early death.
There's a hint at the paranormal early in the book but it isn't pushed forward through the novel.
The pacing is good and we get to see the character develop as she recovers from her wounds. The motivation of our hero is believable and the ending ties in nicely with his personality.
It's a nice first of a series. I enjoyed the description of the little island and the community.
This book follows a predictable pattern but provides the romantic escape expected.
I give it 3-1/2 stars.

Mandy lost the love of her life. She is trying to survive and keep her dreams from slipping through her fingers. Brody, out of guilt and obligation, goes to see his buddy's widow. When he sees the help she needs and not getting it from anyone else, he takes it upon himself to help her.

I love how broken these two characters are and that they know it. I love that it takes giving into each other that heals them. This is a very touching story that warms my heart. I look forward to more in this series.
