I have read all the Ever After High books so far and they are all very interesting. The first three chapters of this book is very interesting. I never realized the author was someone different because I thought it was Shannon Hale. I feel like the writing is a little different compared to Shannon Hale but it's very good. Looking forward to continue on with this book!

First, please note that this is for the whole book; I'm not sure why only the preview is showing up.

Suzanne Selfors ably takes the reins from Shannon Hale as she continues the Ever After High series, this time focusing on lesser-known character Duchess Swan, the daughter of the Swan Princess...or at least one of them. The story plays with the idea that she could be the daughter of either Odette (white swan) or Odile (black swan), which makes her a character uniquely suited for the franchise's message of choosing one's own destiny. Selfors successfully makes Duchess, a sometime villain in the webisodes, into a sympathetic character, giving her real emotions and motivations such as we usually only see attributed to Raven Queen. She has a lot of inner conflict about her ability to turn into a swan and her need to live a perfect life now, because when her destiny hits, she won't have the chance to live any sort of life at all. Her relationships with Lizzie Hearts, Raven, and Sparrow Hood are well developed and interesting, and Sparrow himself graduates from "annoying background player" to "actual character." Likewise the Lizzie and Daring plot from the cartoon is well handled, making Daring more human as well.

Doll collectors will notice that Duchess' story here does contradict some aspects of her bookmark, particularly in terms of her relationship with Faybelle Thorn, but it does seem possible that the Selfors version could lead into the doll story, which would be interesting. In any event, fans of the series should not be disappointed by the author's take on the world of Ever After, and I personally am looking forward to her next book.

This is the story of Duchess Swan. This one actually took 2 nights to read; not because it was three chapters but because my son fell asleep the first night. You see the more my son thinks he is paying attention to something, the easier it is for him to fall asleep. The story of the swan princess is not as well known as the stories of the Disney princesses.
I don't know how to feel about Duchess and I don't think he does either. Raven is a "bad"/rebel girl that is actually good but I think Duchess is a "good"/royal that is actually bad. I suppose I may be quite mad too if I knew my destiny was to be treated like royalty now but to end up a swan with no mate.
I love her interactions with Apple, Ashlynn, and Lizzie. The story of a child with webbed feet was fun as well.
