Dead bodies are bad. Dead bodies that break the laws of magic are worse.
Finding a dead fox in someone’s garden isn’t normally a police matter. Finding a dead fox shifter who should have turned human the second he died? Yeah, that’s more my department.
Remmy has no wounds, no blood and no obvious cause of death. He’s simply dead, trapped forever in his fox form. Apparently there’s only one thing that can do that to a shifter: drain every last drop of magic from them.
Great. Because what Portlock really needed was another magical murderer.
I’ve got an eidetic memory, a badge and two extremely questionable sidekicks. One is a traumatised werewolf who prefers being a German Shepherd, and the other is an ever-growing lynx with a criminal disregard for personal property. Between us, surely we can crack one impossible murder.
Then some local teenagers report seeing a huge creature stalking through the woods, covered in branches and leaves with blazing red eyes.
And red eyes are always bad.
I’m starting to think our mysterious monster and our dead shifter might be connected, which means I need to find whatever is prowling Portlock before anyone else ends up magically drained.
Unfortunately, murder isn’t my only problem. Connor’s father, the Vampire King of the US and an all-round arsehole, has announced he’s coming to town. And he’s bringing the other vampire leaders with him.
So now I have a supernatural killer to catch, a creepy forest monster to find and the most powerful vampire in America heading straight for my home.
Portlock has survived murderous shifters, deadly conspiracies and more supernatural disasters than any tiny Alaskan town has a right to. Hopefully we can survive this too.
Preferably without anyone else turning up dead.
Dive into this fast-paced urban fantasy series if you love mystery, humour, found family, and a slow-burn romance.
This was a difficult book to start reading, the hole Jill left was like a wide charm, which, by the end of the book, was smoothed over by the delight of Bunny and crew and the superb storytelling of Heather. I'm really thrilled that Heather wrote this book. I appreciate how difficult this book must have been for Heather to write. With Jill no longer with us, Heather honoured their partnership, their friendship, by doing so. I can emphatically say that Heather did this book immense justice. I could feel Jill's 'voice' throughout and I'm sure she's smiling down with pride.
This was a 'quietly' emotional read, it crept up on me and suddenly I'm in adrenaline mode big time. I loved the 'quiet' intensity of found family, with Sidnee, with Stan, with Reggie, with Gunnar, so beautiful my eyes misted over. But equally, I loved the many heart tugging moments. I was completely blindsided, gobsmacked and in utter disbelief at the WHO was the cause, it was so brilliantly concealed! The build up of tension, was superb. I was caught off guard as Heather ratcheted it up one notch at a time and then swing the handle full throttle, suspenseful, thrilling, mysterious and pulse spiking.
Bunny has been lamenting the lack of problem solving and boy is that about to change! Even though she and her friends were taking a much deserved break from horrors and dangers, she yearns for a bit of excitement, and got smacked with a mystery she struggled to solve. When she did, I'm not sure who was more gobsmacked, she or I.... One murder after another, no motive, no evidence, no clues, except that the deceased were in their shifted state, which was impossible. At moment of death, all shifters revert to their human form. Heck, I was stumped too. I love the muddied waters of the plot in every single one of these books in the series! I frantically sieve away the mud trying to expose the clear water, with little success, until the author deems it fit, and when she did, it was like a lightning bolt shocker running through me! One of those 'oh hell, I didn't see THAT coming' moments.
All the characters have really grown throughout the series, their distinct voices come through exceptionally. But it's Bunny who's the real star, she's grown exponentially, she's toughened up, her convictions and independence shine like a blaze! Besides accepting her uniqueness, her extraordinary abilities, she fights tooth and nail for those she loves, those she's sworn to protect. My heck, when she put herself directly in danger for Stan, for Shadow and Reggie, I'm sure my heart skipped a few beats. I just love how adept Heather is to titillate that not everything at face value is as it seems. A very warming moment was seeing Matilda's gentle side, her obvious caring for Bunny and I loved seeing her 'making' friends. Parker too has shown another side to him, one I must say, I really like. He's come a hell of a long way from the d*ck he used to be. I have mentioned the emotional tug of this book, but words cannot convey the beauty of the protectiveness these characters show one another. Of the love they have for each other. Of what they are willing to do for each other.
And shoot, that ending! OMG! Jaw dropping! Excellent read, I enjoyed every second! Awesome building up, awesome suspense, awesome action, awesome pacing, awesome EVERYTHING! If I say I'm dying for the next book, I kid you not!
It was with some sadness that I started reading The Vampire and the Case of the Ghastly Golem. I knew that the book was partially written when Jilleen Dolbeare died and that Heather G. Harris had to complete it on her own. I only can imagine what a difficult task that was for her emotionally, and I couldn't help but wonder if Sidnee and Bunny's working together on this case -- and Fluffy/Reggie's contribution also -- weren't somehow symbolic of Harris and Dolbeare's past collaborations. It's as if the chosen family they created took over for Dolbeare, assisting Harris. That whole idea in itself made me tear up a little. As usual, even the basic plot is complicated. There's a dead body of a shifter -- and the body hasn't shifted back to its human self. Then the impossible happens again. Not only must they determine who is the killer, but they also must discern how/why the bodies didn't revert to human status. And whilst that is happening, Connor's father has threatened to make an appearance in Portlock, meaning that Bunny also has to contend that with stress. I'd like to think that Dolbeare would approve of how Harris completed the mystery, and she probably would have been delighted with the cliffhanger ending. Although both writing this book and continuing the series (it's not over yet!) probably were painful for Harris, she has honoured Dolbeare by doing so. I don't know which one of them initially decided to bring back Matilda from Book 6, but it was bold move that added to the book's family.
Just when Bunny starts to think Portlock has calmed down, a fox shifter is found dead in his neighbor's yard. And that is just the first of several bodies found that were still shifted when they should have reverted back to human. Teenagers are also seeing a beast with red eyes inside the barrier in the same area as the bodies. Now Bunny has to figure out what is going on in Portlock before Connor's dad, the Vampire King of the US, gets to Portlock and makes everything much worse. Bunny is one of my favorite characters. She is persistent and dogged in her investigations. She is on the clock 24/7, even while out on a date. Luckily Connor understands bc he is the same way. I like how relatable Bunny is. Even though she has an eidetic memory, she still manages to forget to get a hold of people (as do I). She is finally learning that she can't shelter everyone else and she has to let them do what they want. I loved that we got to see more of Reggie in this book and that he was spending less time as Fluffy, even though I love Fluffy too! Shadow is playing a bigger part and that sneaky cat definitely surprised me as well! This was another mystery with a twist (or 2) I did not see coming! Portlock loses some of its long-time citizens and you can't help but feel sad for them. Even though Remmy was a troublemaker, he was still well loved. I couldn't believe who else was taken in this book. As usual with this series, I couldn't put this book down and it was finished before I knew it. This was such a perfect way to end this book and set up for the next one. I can't wait to see what happens with Connor's father and Portlock.
The Portlock series is one of my absolute favourites and eight books in, I continue to be one of those rude people who are oblivious to the world when reading one of the stories!
It's all high energy with varied, interesting characters driving the story and bantering away. There's one of my favourite romances that's nothing but green flags and regularly makes me smile, and now a few other characters are pairing up and giving off lots of loved up vibes, which is delightful and fun to follow. The highlight for me though has always been the found family element - the FMC, Bunny, has uncaring parents and the contrast she finds in her new circle of friends is astounding to her, and a pleasure to me, as it's always unconditionally supportive...but no-one hesitates to call her on her nonsense either. I love that genuine connection.
It's always been a unique series because of the Alaskan setting and the variety of paranormals in the community. The mysteries are built on these foundations and are outstanding for it.
The authors have consistently been exceptional at blending their styles and creating remarkable storytelling. With the recent death of Jill Dolbeare, Heather G Harris has shown admirable courage to continue with their work and has produced a novel that is true to their melded technique and a lovely tribute to Jill.
With at least one more book in the series I know that it will always be amongst those held closest in my reader's heart and opened often for return visits.
Heather did Jill proud. I'm so glad Heather is continuing this series and I'm sure there's still so much of Jilleen Dolbeare in these books. If I didn't know any better, I'd think they co-wrote this together just like normal instead of Heather having to finish it solo. It's a testament to how well they worked together as authors and what good friends they were that I couldn't tell the difference.
Bunny's got her most perplexing mystery yet. The murders seem to make absolutely no sense. The plot has tons of twists and turns. It kept me at the edge of my seat (and truthfully, up late reading) from cover to cover. I definately did not predict the ending, but it made so much sense. I think it's the most surprising ending so far in this series. Meanwhile, the Spectre of the imminent arrival of Connor's father lurks in the background. They prepare for it in some very interesting ways and I can't wait to see what happens when he arrives in the next book.
I absolutely love Bunny and the people of Portlock. They never stay static and are always changing (like real people). I love how even the more minor characters keep popping up and showing some character growth. It's especially nice to see Reggie make some baby-steps towards healing. I get where Reggie's coming from, life does seem simpler and happier as a dog. I wish a simple frisbee made me as happy as my dog. But, it's really nice to see Reggie make some progress towards spending time as a human. I also like that it's not just Bunny doing solving everything herself, she's part of a whole team of cops and Portlock citizens that help solve the mystery and stop the bad guys.
All in all, a great addition to this series. Wonderful plot and memorable character than keep me invested.
I read an eARC and also pre-ordered. I write this review honestly and voluntarily.
This book did not disappoint in any way; I thought it was fantastic. There’s a new mystery in town, dead shifters have been found but for some reason, they haven’t reverted to human. It seems the cause is that their magic has been drained. Bunny has her hands full trying to discover the who, what and why about these murders. There is also the problem of Conner’s father coming to town for a vampire conference. But she still has Conner, Fluffy (Reggie), Shadow, Gunner and Sidnee all on her side helping. This has a great mystery with the usual great characters. The guilty party was a complete surprise, definitely didn’t see that coming, The book is a quick, easy read filled with suspense, surprises and humour. The only downside is waiting for the next one. Heather did a great job working without Jilleen.
Heartbreaking, well written, detailed and beautifully executed.
Rating: 5⭐️
It had been a while since this terrific series has been updated and through author’s comments at the end, I found out that, sadly, her long-time friend and co-author, Jilleen Dolbeare, had passed away last October 2025 from cancer.
Jilleen Dolbeare wrote many great urban fantasy series as well as the wonderful collaborations with Heather G. Harris. She’s going to be deeply missed by so many. My sympathies to her family and friends.
I’ve loved this series from the beginning when Bunny first arrived in hidden paranormal town of Portlock, Alaska. She was a newly turned (against her will) vampire with a rescue German Shepherd in tow, and became a part of the town and small Sheriff’s Department, solving mysteries and magical crimes in a very different way, involving mythical creatures and fantastical monsters.
And finding love and a mate along the way with a vampire Prince.
The characters are beautifully written, the mysteries are often heartbreaking and complicated, and stretches over multiple books. Even the smallest of roles and characters can become endearing, and pop up later to fill in narrative holes left by characters who have been lost. It’s done well, emotionally satisfying and makes the story feel more like a real community.
The Vampire and the Case of the Ghastly Golem is a great story. Full of loss, grief, high suspense, mystery and multiple storylines. Bunny and her co-workers and friends face one murder after another. These are people who have deep roots within their community. Harris makes the reader feel that loss, the impact just as deeply.
As the hunt for the killer continues, along with the investigation, there’s another important plot line happening. Connor’s father’s coming to the town. He’s got major plans for Connor, maybe for Bunny too. None of them good or in keeping with what either one wants.
That continues to be the next novel’s theme.
Who the villain is surprised me. And the outcome left other questions in place to be answered by the characters and story further down the series itself.
Heartbreaking, well written, detailed and beautifully executed.
I’m so sorry for Heather G. Harris for having to go on with this series without her friend and writing partner. But she wrote a very wonderful story that felt like both of them were very much together here in every part of the story and character.
Highly recommended. And go check out the other books by Jilleen Dolbeare as well as the charity that’s been set up in her name for Indie Fantasy authors .
I really, really enjoyed this latest installment, although it carried an emotional weight that the previous books did not. Knowing that Jilleen Dolbeare sadly passed away last year, and knowing what that loss must have meant for her coauthor Heather G. Harris, made returning to Portlock and these characters especially bittersweet for me as a longtime reader of their work.
The mystery surrounding the ghastly golem became one of my favorite cases of the series. It had everything I enjoy about Portlock: a strange supernatural crime, plenty of twists, danger, and Bunny refusing to stop until she gets to the truth. I did figure out who was responsible before the reveal, but that did not lessen my enjoyment at all. If anything, I was incredibly satisfied with how everything played out, especially the culprit’s final punishment.
The cases are always entertaining, but what truly makes this series hit the spot for me is its characters. Bunny may be the star of the show, but Portlock feels alive because of everyone surrounding her, from major characters to people like Anissa and Matilda, who has been a particular favorite of mine since getting her own story in book six. Found family is one of my favorite tropes, and this series does it exceptionally well. These characters have gradually built something that feels messy, loyal, protective, and genuinely loving.
Bunny herself is such a huge part of why I have fallen in love with the series. She is fearless when it comes to justice, but even more so when the people she loves are threatened, and this book showcases that side of her beautifully. Her relationships with Connor, Reggie, Sidnee, Gunnar, and the rest of her ever-growing circle make her journey so much richer. Watching those bonds deepen alongside her own character development has been every bit as compelling as the mysteries themselves.
The writing remains engaging, the plot moves beautifully, and the character development never gets lost beneath the action. I loved the mystery, I loved spending more time with this strange little found family, and I loved Bunny being Bunny.
And that ending made me want to pick up the next book immediately. Knowing that the next installment will bring Bunny’s story to its conclusion makes me both excited and a little emotional. I cannot wait to see what the final book has in store for Bunny and all the people she loves.
'Dead bodies are bad. Dead bodies that break the laws of magic are worse.' Portlock has been quite calm lately so Gunnar and Sig are finally taking a long delayed romantic vacation. Bunny is almost bored, processing paperwork in the Nomo's office with Fluffy and Shadow by her side. She takes a call from Gertrude that Remmy, her cranky fox shifter neighbor, is dead in her yard. When she arrives, there aren't any injuries, blood, or reason that she can fathom for his death. However, he is still in his shifter shape, still a silver fox, and very unalive. But shifters always change back to human when they die. Locals tell her rumors, bedtime tales, of shifters staying in shifter shape after life is gone, only one way... if every bit of their magic has been bled from their body. Bunny isn't bored anymore. Theres a supernatural assassin in town. Teens report a red-eyed, leafy, bigfoot-like beast in the woods, then several shifters silently disappear, and Shadow is strangely, sluggishly, sleepy. Finally though, Fluffy/Reggie is progressing pleasantly. There is another agonizing issue... Connor’s father, the vicious Vampire King of the United states, is on his way to Portlock, bringing his vampire bosses. Can Bunny, with the help of her beloved Connor, and Portlock regulars; Anissa, Calliope, Sidnee, Stan, and Thomas survive the supernatural calamities and conspiracies? Will Matilda's mysterious dirt and mud-moving magic save the day? How will Bunny and Connor cope with the villainous vampires on the way? This is book 8 in the Portlock Paranormal Detective Series, created by Heather G Harris and co-author, Jilleen Dolbeare. Sadly, Jilleen left us in 2025 and Heather, while coping with the loss of her friend, will complete the series. I could hear Jill's wonderful words and lovely voice in the writing. Its a splendid tribute to Jill. Ghastly Golem is an amazing, beautiful, chaotic, delightful, exciting and electrifying escape to supernatural Alaska!! 5 sensational stars!! Arc review.
I love the Portlock series so much, going into this one was bittersweet, Jill's passing is still raw but I feel like Heather has done her extremely proud and her memory lives on throughout her wonderful stories (not only this series but her many others). She'll never be forgotten and we'll continue to keep her alive with the stories she's told.
The Vampire and The Case of The Ghastly Golem was a brilliant read, I'm biased as I said I love this series but this book certainly knocked it out of the park. I had no idea where we were going with this one. We had deaths and no one was safe, I didn't have a clue who the culprit was and even when it was revealed I still questioned it. Honestly wow! How that was kept secret I'll never know. Killer aside we also got some lovely surprises and all I'm saying is about time... Though as I write that I remembered another thing so yay! I loved all the character developments in this novel. I love Fluffy/Reggie, Shadow, Bunny, Connor, Sidnee, Gunnar... I could just list the full cast here 😆 I'm so invested in each and every one of them. As always the writing is brilliant, the way it's written grabs hold of you and doesn't leave go, even after the final page you still want more. As I said this book I loved so much and I know Jill will be smiling down 🩷
I’ve been looking forward to reading more about Bunny, her sidekicks Fluffy and Shadow, and the people of Portlock who have come to mean so much to her. Wow, what a return they have made!
Unexplained deaths that might have a connection to the beast behind the barrier, if the creature with red eyes seen by some boys, is involved, but Bunny doesn’t think that makes sense. It starts with a shifters death, but things go from bad to worse and Bunny needs to figure out who and why, before there are more deaths. On top of that, the arrival of Connor’s father and a lot of powerful vampires is imminent. No one is quite sure why they are coming to Portlock - but it’s not likely to be a good thing!
Matilda the Hag, with her fondness for Bunny and for sweet things to eat, has a very important role in this book and it’s lovely to see her character make a return. Bunny and Connor’s relationship continues to develop and Reggie/Fluffy shows how much he will push himself to help those he cares about.
There are some huge surprises/developments in this book and some lovely ones too. Some mysteries hint at becoming clearer and I can’t wait for the next book for everything to become clear.
Bunny is back! Our favourite vampire at the Nomo's Office in Portlock, Alaska starts us off with the body of an old friend from early in the series who, let's be frank, deserved his own mini-series full of vulpine shenanigans. Over the course of the book, we discover that a serial killer is at large and using means that no one in town is known to use - we have a veritable mystery on our hands. Fluffy and Shadow's backstories also develop further and we finally find out what the "Beast Beyond the Barrier" is! Not only that, but the North American Vampire King (aka, Connor's father) is coming to town, so we spend much of the book in suspenseful anticipation. Unfortunately, like all good tales, we exit the story before he arrives and the Beast is saved from the forces affecting it, because let's be honest, as well - there is absolutely zero chance that Bunny will let it keep suffering as it has been. I eagerly await the next installment of the Portlock series and what Bunny, Fluffy and Shadow will get up to next.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily please note there may be spoilers!
It’s been a while since we last caught up with Bunny and the gang, but that’s completely understandable, HGH has been incredibly busy with lots of interesting ideas, and her multiple series, as well as the sad passing of her co-author but Jilleen will forever live on in the Portlock Series.
When Portlock resident Gertrude, calls the NOMO’s office to report her neighbour missing, Bunny is the one to take the call. Fortunately Remy is soon located, unfortunately he’s dead and still in his fox shifter form, which makes the case straight up Bunny’s alley. It’s not long before more residents are found dead while still in their shifted form, and Bunny and Sidnee are on their own as Gunnar has taken a vacation, for the first time in ages.
However dying residents are not the only issue Portlock needs to be worried about, the Vampire King is on his way to visit his son with other Vampire Leaders, but Connor seems to have a plan, part of which involves Bunny.
As more residents keep dying with no particular connection to the others except that each of them are a shifter of some form, can the team uncover the culprit/s without becoming targets themselves?

This is the first book in the series without Jilleen Dolbeare. She will always be missed by family, friends, and her readers. Heather put her all into forging ahead to make this book feel like home even without Jilleen’s voice. I think she succeeded with flying colors! I thoroughly enjoyed this one just as much as the rest of the series!
A lot of interesting things happened in this one to setup an even more interesting book 9. Things that have been in the background since book 1 will finally see the light of day. So far as this one though, I just did not see the perpetrator coming! And who it became… wow. The development of what they were trying to do, they should have known better!
As always, thanks to the author for letting me read this early and provide the opportunity to typo hunt.
It was really great to get back to Bunny, Sidnee, Fluffy, Connor, Shadow, and the rest of the Portlock folks! There’s a murderer on the loose and Bunny and Sidnee are determined to find the killer on their own so that Gunnar and Sigrid can enjoy a much-needed vacation.
What I liked most about this book was that there’s a lot of progress on several aspects of the series. Whether it be Fluffy/Reggie, or Bunny and Conner, I was really happy with how much they’ve grown since the series began. As for the murderer, I’m very disappointed with the killer’s decisions which led them to where they ended up, but I’m pretty glad that thread is resolved (really trying not to give anything away!) I love this series and it was really fun to get back with the characters.
I also want to say that I think Heather did a wonderful job paying tribute to Jill in the book, and I’m sure Jill would be proud of what the two authors have accomplished together.
It took a little longer to get here than expected, but it was worth it. A fox shifter that didn't turn back to his human form when he died, an impending visit from Connor's vampire king father and kids reporting a mysterious monster that appears to be made from bits of forest with glowing, red eyes all come together at once to keep Bunny's life from getting too boring. As more bodies are found, Bunny has to race to against time to ensure no one else is killed and everything is wrapped up before the vampire king's arrival. This book caught and held my attention in a vice grip. I was picking it up whenever I had a spare minute and finished most of it in a single day. The humor and mystery really make this book, especially the overly accurate portrayal of cats behavior that made me laugh and read the passage aloud to my husband. It ended exactly where I expected it to (although I was surprised about how we got there!) and left me excited for the next book.
In the latest installment of the Portlock Paranormal Detective Series, Bunny has a new puzzle to solve. Who is killing shifters and how are they still in their animal form after death? This is her case and with Gunnar and Sig headed for a well deserved vacation she needs to keep it that way. But more deaths pile up including the Mayor. Also, Connors’ Vampire King father is due any day now to wreak the havoc he usually does for his son. With the help of her friends she has to solve the puzzle, keep her friends alive and deal with a weakening Barrier keeping the monster at bay. Just another day for Bunny. I don’t know how Heather Harris was able to complete this after losing her friend and writing partner Jilleen Dolbeare but this is a tribute to the world they built together and their friendship.
Immediately the book starts with death of a previously met minor character in the small town of Portlock. Even though we hardly knew Remmy, I felt badly for Gertrude losing her neighbor nemesis. Remmy is a fox shifter and his body should've reverted to human upon death, but he was found in his fox form. Then more bodies are found in the same way. Bunny and the rest of the Portlock crew eventually solve the mystery. Despite every single clue pointing at someone, I really wanted the clues to be wrong…
I love that we got to see Matilda, the hag really is one of my favorite characters in Portlock. 🥰
Bunny should really stick to her day job because peanut butter and gherkin sandwiches are a choice… 🤢😆
This was a really hard book to read as it was the last book co-author Jilleen Dolbeare wrote in the series. It was still an awesome addition to the series, just a bittersweet read… 💔
I received a free copy of this book from the author(s).
As always I love these books, I love everything by Heather, it was a shock when Jill died. Fortunately this series has continued and it is every bit as wonderful as the rest of the series. So we get the story moved forward more. It all happens in this book, we learn more about Shadow, about the threat against the town and Liv. I like that fact that Matilda plays a big part and that Reggie is ready to be human-shifter more. There are people we know who dies, some who nearly die and Bunny has to figure it all out. Fortunately she does just in time. Conner's dad is about to turn up and there is a lot of problems connected to that too. The next book will be about what his father is going to do and why. I really love the books they are so imaginative and feel so real. I love how Bunny's relationships with everyone takes a step forward in this book.
I loved this 8th book in the series and I wish so much that book 9 was immediately available. Such a cliffhanger for what comes next.
I have to say I figured out the secrets here almost immediately. (But then of course kept considering perhaps it was instead an excellent red herring!) The climactic scene was a great job by the author to wrap things up while also foreshadowing a future issue. The villainous monologue confirmed what I had guessed and the rationale why. I’m kind of surprised Bunny didn’t get there quicker.
There are lots of irons in the fire for the next book and several ways things could go pear shaped. The plot of this book set up an interesting dynamic that the book nine villain will not have anticipated I am guessing. I am wondering if it solves the problems Connor and Bunny anticipated though. I hope the next book isn’t too long away!
Like many longtime fans of the series this was a bittersweet read knowing that Jilleen passed away last year and Heather had to complete the novel without her. So I was a little emotional reading this one which could not possibly compare to what Heather must have flet in writing it. THis was another fabulous story and I love how the characters and the relationships have grown throughout the series and the strong found family bonds. I am particularly enjoying Bunny and Sidnee's metamorphis into fully fledged detectives, and afternoon tea with Matilda whom I adore. I was able to figure out the bad guy, loved the vampire politics and am super keen to see where things go next with the upcoming threat due in town soon.
I received an ARC from the author but all views expressed are my own.
I'm writing this from the point of view of the series, because if you start a new series on book 8 what are you even doing? Go back and read book one. It's worth the 7 books to get you here.
This book ties up a lot of loose ends, with a meaty mystery as the main focus. The tricky part of writing this review is going to be not piling on the spoilers.
Bunny is in fine form, and the usual cast of characters are too. We do lose one peripheral character, though, and there are plenty of close calls for several of the gang. All the usual snark, personal growth, and found family magic are in play. We do see a lot more of Matilda and Anissa in this book.
I have a feeling that book 9 will be the last book and bring our time in Portluck to a close.
"Dead bodies are bad. Dead bodies that break the laws of magic are worse.
I’ve got an eidetic memory, a badge and two extremely questionable sidekicks. One is a traumatised werewolf who prefers being a German Shepherd, and the other is an ever-growing lynx with a criminal disregard for personal property. Between us, surely we can crack one impossible murder
Portlock has survived murderous shifters, deadly conspiracies and more supernatural disasters than any tiny Alaskan town has a right to."
Typical Wednesday in Portlock for Bunny & the NOMO 😅 This is the eighth book of Bunnys adventures so if you've not jumped into the Portlock rabbit hole you ARE seriously missing out!! I mean where else can you get a British vampire living in Alaska with vampires, shifters, werewolves, shamans, demi-gods & all the supernatural shenanigans that come with it! A wonderful mix of urban fantasy, myth, magic & folklore with enough twists & turns to make me feel like I'm a teenager on the Waltzers 🤗 & I'll happily admit to my kindle being hugged, loved, snort laughed at, WTF'd & cursed at multiple points in the past 24hrs
HGH pushed back this book struggling with writing this one without JD, the psychological block of writing a series with your friend & then no longer having them to bounce ideas/twists/ways to torture readers off of..... heartbreaking 💔 in my humble opinion, you've done her proud & the About the Author-Jilleen.... Perfect & Precious
“No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence.”
We are back with Bunny, and there are bodies turning up all over the place. There is so much action in this one, and a couple of surprises threw me a little, both good and bad. I had a great time from the beginning to the end, just like I’ve always been in these books. Too bad this series is coming to an end; I really love all the characters. Reading this latest in the series is bittersweet for me, too, since one of the authors has passed away and wasn’t involved in this one. However, I do think she was smiling at this recent installment, and what a great job the other author did solo. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Bunny has a new case a shifter is dead without a mark on them and he didn't revert back to human form. There are also odd depressions in the dirt near the victim. Bunny starts looking into what would prevent the shifter staying in their animal form, before she finds any answer another corpse turns up in similar circumstances. But when the mayor is murdered it breaks the pattern. Now the case is really heating and Bunny must find the murder before any more people are murdered. To make things worse Connors father is planning a visit and he is sending people to make trouble for the town. Bunny races to solve the case before the visit so they can deal with vampire politics.
I have been waiting quite impatiently for this book and it didn’t let me down. It was a really good buffer book I feel between the last story and the next because some things needed to be dealt with before the king of the vampires comes to visit and I felt like this book did that well with still giving a good story and mystery to solve. I’m so proud of fluffy/reggie but I have to say I’m in alliance with Bunny’s feelings on the matter. My favorite characters are Shadow and Connor and I’m glad I got to see a bunch of them this time even if a lot of it was sleepy shadow. I am already chomping at the bit for the next book. I need to know what happens.
So, I hadn’t read the other books in this series so I was not familiar with the characters and who they are, but I was able to follow and really enjoyed this book. I really like urban fantasy books with a little touch of romance (no spice). This book is that. I enjoy the plot and the characters who are in this. Bunny is an interesting character with a job as a sort of detective for the supernatural beings. She also has some sidekicks with her. Connor is the vampire lead in this town. They are mates. Some shifters and others end up dead and Bunny needs to find out who or what is doing it. Now I will go read the other books. Very good urban fantasy book!
This series has been a favorite from the start, and over the course of Bunny’s adventures I’ve become attached to her, Connor, and the whole Portlock crew. In this story, something has been killing Portlock citizens and draining their magic. With a threatened upcoming visit from Connor’s father, the head of vampires in North America, Bunny feels especially pressured to solve the mystery both before more people are killed and before another huge threat arrives in town. We get great page time with some great characters including Fluffy/Reggie, Shadow, and others and see some surprises from them and others.
As usual, I end this story satisfied but eager for the next one.
The Vampire and the Case of the Ghastly Golem is a great penultimate book in a fantastic series!
While this book has everything that I’ve come to love and expect from a Portlock Paranormal Detective Series book, it managed to catch me by surprise several times. There were several twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, both in the case and in the characters’ personal lives. After this book, I honestly have no idea what will happen in the last one.
Heather did a great job writing this book while keeping Jill’s voice alive and strong.
I can’t wait for the next book and to see how this whole series is wrapped up!
I always love to return to Portlock, and this time was no different, except for the bittersweet knowledge that it will soon to be over. The continuation of Bunny and crew’s story was intriguing, and the murders solved, cleared up more than one mystery. It was a very satisfying read, and worth the wait. I was moved by how author Heather G. Harris was able to write, not only through her grief, but in such a way that we still hear Jilleen Dolbeare’s voice. I very much look forward to the next book, even while sad that it will be the last. These two women created a fascinating town with interesting characters, which I’m glad to visit and meet.
