That’s right, the game 90% of people play while on the crapper has become a comic – and a surprisingly decent one too!

IDW have gone about the potentially godawful enterprise of adapting Angry Birds the game into a comic by hiring two excellent writers, Jeff Parker (Batman ’66) and Paul Tobin (Bandette), both of whom have created some wonderful all-ages comics (particularly Tobin’s Marvel Heroes work).

Together they craft some short and simple stories for the Angry Birds to have while the Pigs try to steal their eggs. An elaborate theme park, Piggyland, keeps the Birds occupied while the Pigs raid their nests; candy and cartoons attempt to subvert the Birds’ friendships; a weather machine takes on the Birds; and fashion grips the Pigs as the search for the best wig is on!

These are comics aimed at younger readers AND it’s based on a video game so expect the most straightforward, uncomplicated stories with the simplest characterisations. They’re very broad comics that I’m sure the target audience of kids will like – older readers though? Ehhhhhh, no!

That said, I read this out of curiosity to see how exactly Angry Birds becomes a comic at all, given that there’s absolutely no narrative in the game, and I think Parker and Tobin did a fine job building what they did out of what little they had. And it’s certainly more readable than Tobin’s other game-related comic, the coma-inducing Plants Vs Zombies: Lawnmageddon.

Is it an amazing comic? No, it’s Angry Birds, it was never going to be amazing! But it’s also not terrible either and fans of the game, especially younger readers, will find an ok collection of short comics in this volume.

Our favorite characters embark on new adventures while roaming their island in this bundle of their first 4 comic books..

Funny storylines, accompanied by great designs and stunning colors..

A great, easy read for both children and adults. Basically for anyone who likes angry birds..and let's face it, we are many..

Written by the Eisner nominated writer Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts, Spider-man 1602) with interiors drawn by David Baldeon (Scarlet Spider, Captain America) and Cover art by Paco Rodriquez (Micky Mouse).

I received an ARC copy for review. My 7 year-old son LOVED this comic. We read it in one sitting, taking turns reading aloud with all the fun onomatopoeias! There were several short stories in similar fashion to the Angry Bird Cartoons. My son is definitely a fan of the Angry Bird Comics now, and can't wait for more!

Well, I wasn't aware Angry Birds had a STORY.

Wait, yes, I was. I mean in-game, though. It feels like if Pong had a story. (Maybe it does?)

So, if you are like me and avoided the game AND movie, all you might know is that the birds are angry (hence the name) at pigs for some reason, and why can't they get along? I guess the reason is the pigs steal the birds' eggs to eat. Okay, wasn't aware pigs were into egg predation, but okay, maybe they were easier to draw than mustelids or that.

The stories are... okay. There are a lot of them (short ones), where I had somehow expected more like the Skylanders books, which are about the same size and quality but a longer, single story. They're also approximately age-appropriate (assuming the most casual target audience of younger to mid-teens), though as a result I didn't really "click" with any of the characters since their world is so shallow.

Okay for fans, but maybe pass if you aren't one.

Edit: Also, there's a weird buffer at the bottom of each page that feels like wasted space, but there's actually a pseudo-flipbook with birds launching at pigs. I say pseudo because it doesn't "animate" very well, between details like one of the pigs suddenly looking a different direction for ONE frame; not being able to grasp the pages well enough to "flip" them; the active area being too large to follow the whole thing (most good flipbooks are either full-page or only in one corner); and the animation switching to different scenes after a few "frames" instead of just making a lot of frames for one scene.

I used to be obsessed with the game when it first came out, of course. Way back when it was a cell phone game and there was only one version and I sucked at it. I was ambivalent about the movie but wanted to give the comics a try because they seemed cute and I love the yellow triangle bird. Amusing enough to read to the end, but definitely more for kids with how silly it is. Not quite interesting enough for me to keep reading.

NTS: Not reading Vol 2

I'm not a fan of Angry Birds but I figured I'd give this book a try. It was cute. I really enjoyed the illustrations but this book couldn't convince me to become a fan.

Angry Birds Comics Vol. 1: Welcome to the Flock is a decent collection of Angry Birds comics, although I think I like the Angry Birds cartoons a little better. I would give this comic 3.4 stars.

REVIEW:

Who would have thought the crazy game my son showed me on the iPhone years ago was going to BOOM, and take shake up the world in such a way. Angry birds from video game to toys, shirts, stuffed animals, cars, and on, and on, and on . . . COMIC BOOK. Of course our little strange characters need personalities, and not only personalities, but they have a story to tell. Apparently many stories filled with action and mischief.

I was given this book free of charge to provide an honest review of. As usual, when I am awarded a children's book for review I ask my right hand man's opinion. My right hand man, also known as my 9 year old son Drew, said, "OH COOL". Yes that is a good first reaction. Drew continued to read the book, laugh out loud often, and then request a printed copy for later rereading. What great feedback.

I thought the funny looking birds and pigs were very humorous. I thought the comic wonderfully written and drawn. It was appropriate to it's target audience (big kids / adults) and will provide hours of entertainment. I remain in awe at the marketing behind this whole product, or was it just an accident that these birds and pigs be came so famous??

'Angry Birds Comics Volume 1: Welcome to the Flock' proved two things to me. First, you can make a decent comic out of characters from an app, and second, that Paul Tobin can write anything, and he does it well.

The birds are trying to protect their eggs. The pigs are trying to steal the eggs. The birds fly over to the pigs village to keep the pigs from having time to steal the eggs. That's pretty much the premise of the game. The pigs are pretty dumb, but some of the birds are too. When Bomb Bird gets the hiccups, he keeps blowing up anything around himself. Another story has the pigs trying to brainwash the birds with candy and propaganda to make them doubt each other. My favorite might have been the pigs building a theme park that had a lot in common with a certain California based theme park. There are other stories. There is even, I think, a flip comic that runs along the bottom pages of the book, but in a review electronic copy, it's a bit hard to flip the pages fast enough.

It's all perfectly great fun for kids, which is great, since I learned how to play the game from my, then, 4 year old niece. Rather than being one-note like the game, it felt more like the old Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons. I hope there are more. This was fun.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this fun graphic novel.

This book uses the ever popular characters from the Angry Birds game series. With all of children's favourite characters from the series, this comic is funny, witty and plain clever. My original expectations for this weren't very high but it far surpassed this and was really quite enjoyable! With the bomb bird who has an unfortunate case of the hiccups and can't stop exploding to the adventure world of Piggyland which is another cunning ploy for the pigs to steal the Angry Birds' eggs.

It's an entertaining quick read which will be enjoyed by fans of the game, in particular this will appeal to young boys who will enjoy reading these though girls will probably do so too! I found this comic more entertaining than the game by far, they're short, simple, funny and to the point which is all the essential components of a good children's comic. The illustrations are brilliant and really brought this to life. A nice short collection, which will entertain and amuse, but it isn't a comic that I think that children will really want to revisit more than a couple of times....

…Because the game app hasn't made enough profit. This bright and breezy comic puts a bit more character into the mythology, with a sprinkling of the different kinds of birds, and on the other side some of the different types of green pig, getting into cartoonish japes. Nobody over the age of about nine will particularly find it enjoyable, and many older than that will have absolutely no clue what it all is in aid of, beyond the subject of my opening sentence. Strictly for the very young, it has the silliness inherent in the game's set-up, and a decent spread of different short stories to act as some people's first comic book. But speaking of inherent silliness – that's what one would show if one expected much more than that.

**A e-copy of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

I totally enjoyed this graphic novel of Angry Birds. It was so cute, adorable and funny to read. I love how the birds and pigs were at constant war from across on different rocks, to piggyland and to beach. Just simply hilarious. I never really liked the Angry Birds game, but this totally made me fall in love with Angry Birds.

Awesome graphics/ artwork. Definitely enjoyed this to a T. I even read this to my younger siblings (sister age 9, brother age 13) and they enjoyed every piece of this. I definitely plan to purchase a physical copy when it's released.

4 stars across the board!

This is very much a kids book and a very funny one at that. The book is comprised of short stories, chronicling the adventures of the Angry Birds and those dastardly Piggies, always trying to steal the eggs.

The stories are short funny and witty, with a nice sense of humor, to keep children engaged. The illustrations are hilarious and by far my favorite was the story on Piggyland, it's like Disneyland except it's all Piggies and it's an evilllll plot.

Parents will love this book because it will captivate their kid's attention and kids will love it because it's funny and animated.

1. Bomb can't get rid of his hiccups.
2. The pigs drop "ProPIGanda" in the form of candy and literature that might just turn the birds against each other.
3. The Pigs try to use a egg sucking device, but the birds outsmart them.
4. The pigs open Pigglyland

A series of story lines pitting the birds against the pigs. Should be popular with students, though the stories aren't that interesting.

Angry Birds continue their takeover of the world by invading comic-book land. These are very short tales the birds and pigs interactions with jokes, slap-stick and even a bit of espionage thrown in. Not bad for quick, semi-mindless reading.

These Angry Bird comics are hilarious, even if you aren't a fan of the game. The pigs and birds all have their own unique personalities that when all are combined have some ridiculous outcomes. The book is made up of several short comics varying in length from one page to ten. Fabulous fun for all!
