Rick Frown is a charismatic CEO with an All-American past and a chilling appetite for control. What begins as a commentary on power, performance, and ego spirals into a tautly constructed cat-and-mouse narrative, told with precision and a clinical eye for detail.

Frown is a fascinating a man whose discipline and strategic genius, honed on the football field and in boardrooms, find new life in the planning and execution of a perfect murder. His transition from executive to killer is handled with unnerving confidence. Rick orchestrates every detail, manipulates evidence, exploits people, and thrives on power. He doesn’t just want to win; he needs to dominate

The first half of the novel is nearly surgical in its detail, chronicling Rick’s obsessive planning with unsettling realism. The pacing is deliberate, mirroring Rick’s own cold, methodical nature. We watch as Rick struggles with his own inner demons, struggling with his internal need for something new and exciting against the risk of losing the perfect life. The reader is made complicit as Rick makes this transition, having walked each step of preparation from boardroom to assassin.
.
The second half shifts perspectives, following a team of detectives led by Elena Kolonik as they piece together the trail Rick believes he’s erased. Elena is compelling in her own sharp, steady, and tireless. The procedural elements are thoroughly researched and grounded, lending the investigation a sobering weight.

Everyone thinks they could plan the perfect murder. Could you actually get away with it? Would you get every last detail right? Could you outsmart the police? Well Rick thinks he’s can…. And maybe he’s right.

Boardroom Assassin by R. L. Hare is a psychological thriller that follows Rick Frown, a successful corporate executive, as he leads a double life. He thrives on power at any cost and becomes obsessed with pulling off a perfectly planned murder. The only thing is, he has to make sure every step in the plan leaves not one stitch of evidence leading back to him.

From the very first page, readers get to see what type of person Rick Frown is. He’s a fit 46-year-old CEO of a Fortune 1000 company. He lives a life of excess and detachment, yet he’s disciplined. How does that happen? Oh, but it does. He gets to travel all over the world and sleep with beautiful escorts. This is a sharp contrast to his quiet life back at home with his beautiful wife Jennifer, who has no clue what type of person he is or is on the brink of becoming. Rick is definitely the character that I tried so hard to hate, but I was just so fascinated with him and how in the world he was going to pull off this murder.

Let’s really break down Rick’s character some more, because I just couldn’t believe what I was reading. But I didn’t want to close the book. Hare has created an incredible piece of work in Rick’s character. Rick has a chillingly logical mind that makes him the scariest character in the story. He becomes so obsessed with what he treated like a project, until it metastasizes into something much darker. It was even given a name: Project Clean Slate. Readers get to go inside the mind of a man evolving into a boardroom assassin; weighing variables, calculating evidence transfers, considering the psychological aftermath, and even rehearsing the cover story. He really thought this thing through, and that’s what made this not your typical murder plot storyline. This was murder on steroids.

In comes Elena Kolonik. She’s not your typical tough detective, and she’s more of a walking imperfection in terms of how she dresses and carries herself. She reminds me of the rough days of Perry Mason prior to him becoming a groomed lawyer; wrinkled clothes and uneven hair. Or dare I even say, Columbo. But she knows her job, and she comes in and stirs things up to try to find the cracks.

She is haunted by an unsolved case, but she’s still meticulous about her work and notices what other investigators may miss. This makes her quietly persistent, and it also makes her a threat because she’s the type that doesn’t reveal all the cards in her deck. Meticulous recognizes meticulous; Elena realizes that this perpetrator they’re after is trying to misdirect their investigation by planting fake fingerprints and synthetic hair. It comes off as too perfect. While Rick seems to hold onto this false sense of control, Detective Elena pursues the case, relentlessly trying to find the truth. I am a sucker for a really good, twisted game of cat and mouse. Hare gave me just that in Boardroom Assassin.

The other characters cannot go unnoticed. They are just as much a part of this narrative, and readers will come to love them. I love the fact that Hare did not make them the stereotypical Hollywood characters. They show their flaws and frustrations, and they are very relatable human beings. Reggie Voss, who is street savvy and a seasoned vet, doesn’t want to work under Detective Elena at first, but her sharp instincts make him change his mind. Carlos Vega is a rookie who is eager, but sometimes he jumps the gun. On the other hand, he proves himself to be useful because he’s tech-savvy. There’s also Doug and Monica, the forensic experts who work like quiet scientists piecing together the evidence. But the entire team seems to feed off each other like a real investigative team.

I enjoyed reading Boardroom Assassin, part of The Elena Kolonik Files series by R.L. Hare, because it felt like I was reading the unsealed files of a real murderer. I loved the added touch of the newspaper headlines and the live CNN footage. It really brought out how life continues to move about while one person is getting good at hiding the truth, and another is working hard to uncover the truth. This reminded me of The Killing Lessons by Saul Black because of how sadistic and methodical Rick Frown is. Blend that with The Bone Collector: Lincoln Rhyme Series by Jeffrey Deaver because of the in-depth forensics. I think readers will definitely enjoy Boardroom Assassin as much as I did.

"Boardroom Assassin" is the first book in The Elena Kolonik Files series by R.L. Hare.

Rick Frown, a 6'4" former college football star, is now the ultra-successful CEO of a Fortune 1000 company based in Seattle. Hare’s portrayal of Frown is chillingly believable: razor-sharp, obscenely wealthy, and ruthlessly focused. He’s the ultimate corporate warrior—manipulative, calculating, and utterly devoid of empathy. Early on, it becomes clear that Frown is also a sociopath. He uses people—scores of escorts during business trips, for instance—and discards them without a second thought. Even his marriage is transactional; he doesn’t love or respect his wife, but treats her as another possession.

Soon, Frown grows bored with his success and begins craving a new kind of thrill: the ultimate power over another human being. Murder. He starts planning the perfect crime with the same precision he applies to business strategy. He even gives it a codename: PROJECT CLEAN SLATE. His theory? Most murderers get caught because they’re careless. But with meticulous planning and pressure-testing every step, he believes he can avoid all the pitfalls.

He dives into deep research, scouting potential crime scenes and spending long nights at his computer, building spreadsheets and lists of logistical questions, both to conduct the crime but also to plant a host of false leads. How, for instance, does one collect someone else’s blood to then leave at a crime scene as a red herring? How can another person's fingerprints be harvested and then deployed? What’s the ideal venue and time of day for a murder? He even begins traveling to potential sites on the East Coast. Frown’s descent is slow, methodical, and disturbingly intimate.

Admittedly, this section of the book begins to drag slightly, as Hare walks us through Frown’s exhaustive planning process step by step. By this point, we’re fully aware: this man is a psychopath, and he will kill.

The second half of the novel shifts focus to the investigation. Elena Kolonik, a meticulous and intuitive investigator, leads the charge alongside her team: rookie detective Carlos Vega and forensic specialists Doug and Monica. They must unravel the twisted web of false leads and planted evidence Frown has left behind. Naturally, she and her team will be equal to the task but the thrill is to read just how they doggedly achieve that. And in the process, the reader's appetite is whetted for more in the Elena Kolonik series!

According to the Amazon blurb, this novel was 23 years in the making—and it shows. The author's care and precision and excellent writing in both the criminal’s planning and the investigators’ pursuit are evident throughout. This book grabs you by the collar from the very first page and doesn't let go. A harrowing and entertaining read!

Rick Frown is the CEO of a Fortune 1000 company and just made a huge buyout of another company. He has always been a winner and arrogant enough to believe he’s invincible. He is bored and decides that pulling off a Perfect Crime would be exciting. Rick becomes consumed with the planning of a murder. He calls his plan Project Clean Slate and this obsession takes over his life. He plans the details down to almost minutes. His job allows him to travel to multiple states and he collects evidence from random locations to confuse the investigators. When he’s convinced that the plan is perfect he follows through with the murder.

The second half of this book is where, Elena, the investigator sets out to find the murderer. She and her team are dedicated to solving this crime following every planted piece of false evidence. Rick has met his match.

Rick is the type of person who doesn’t follow rules, he makes them. This unforgettable novel is the first book of a series.

Thank you, R. L. Hare and Voracious Readers

Calculated. Cold. Completely Gripping

Boardroom Assassin delivers a sharp, surgical descent into the mind of a man who thinks he's too smart to ever get caught. Rick Frown isn't just a CEO-- he's a predator in tailored suit, and watching him unravel was addictive.

This one stuck with me. If you're into psychological thrillers with brains, tension, and believable characters on both sides of the law-- this is it.

Could NOT put it down. I read it in four hours and already want to reread it! Rick is a guy who just has to get his way in everything. He has to be in control. But underneath the ruthlessness, this man is vulnerable. He's insecure. He's almost...likeable. This man is calculating, shrewd, and yet you can't help but feel sorry for him in a way.
I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out. I'm going to HAVE to read it!!!

Boardroom Assassin had me hooked from page one. Rick Frown isn’t just a CEO he’s a control obsessed mastermind planning the perfect crime. The detail is chilling, the pacing is sharp, and Detective Elena brings just the right amount of tension and heart. It’s a slow burn, but the payoff is so worth it. If you like psychological thrillers that feel real, this one’s a must-read.

5 Stars – A Thriller That Breaks the Mold
Boardroom Assassin hooked me because it isn’t your typical cookie-cutter thriller. The story is told in two parts first through the eyes of the antagonist, then from the perspective of the investigator chasing him. Both sides felt authentic, believable, and grounded in reality without relying on over-the-top forensics or unbelievable twists.
The characters came across as very real, like people the author actually knows, and the switch between the mind of a psychopath and the detective was executed flawlessly. R.L. Hare clearly did his homework, and it shows on every page.
If you’re tired of thrillers that all feel the same, this one will keep you turning pages. Highly recommended.

fortunately this was a free download. this had the potential to be a good one but the author needs to take a few (ok, way more than a few) lessons in punctuation, grammar, sentence structure..... you get the picture. he then needs to hire a competent copy editor and proofreader. there was so much wrong with this book it was a chore to read but i kept with it hoping for a decent ending....... but that didn't happen. one example--if you backed in to the parking space you can't then back out of it. a good copy editor would have caught that. there was so much unnecessary detail. you could skip entire chapters of detail and not miss a thing. i'm sorry i wasted a day on this.

This is one more intense book. If you are looking for non-stop action, this is not the book for you. Most of the action takes place inside Rick's head as he works out the "perfect murder". Luckily, Rick's unlikable character is balanced by the lead detective, Elena Kolonik. She can match Rick on the intensity scale, but she at least has a few redeeming qualities. I will admit to having skipped a bit as the meticulous detail wore me down after a while. But I did finish it, and I am looking forward to reading the second book. I'm hoping there will be more action outside the characters' brains than this book provides.

Boardroom Assassin delivers an eerie kind of precision that makes you wonder what really goes on behind polished corporate doors. Rick Frown isn’t your average exec, his need for control makes for a disturbingly compelling character. The blend of psychological tension and procedural detail gives the whole story a grounded, slow-burn intensity.

Without giving anything away, it’s a gripping concept with layers that stay with you. Definitely the kind of book that leaves you thinking long after the last page.

I really enjoyed this book! The planning by the main character Rick is seemingly immaculate and impenetrable, he appears to have thought of every scenario. Although he's a complete self-righteous prat who is selfish and entitled, I admired his plans. But then enters Elena... who makes Rick look like a novice - her planning is even better lol. If you'd ever thought this plot would be a good idea, don't. It's a slow burn because of the extensive planning involved but that's the type of book I was searching for as my life is too busy atm so relaxing with this read was great!

R.L. Hare’s Boardroom Assassin is a psychological thriller novel. The story centers on the deadly battle of wits between Rick Frown, a ruthless and brilliant CEO, and Elena Kolonik, a determined detective. What makes the novel unique is its focus—not on the act of the crime itself, but on the mental architecture of the crime, setting it apart from traditional crime stories. I believe it will be an engaging choice for readers who enjoy in-depth character analysis, mind games, and slow-paced yet deeply suspenseful thrillers.

I enjoyed the book, and getting to see the different way Rick's mind was working. It was diabolical the thought process that he had and the way that the author brought us along for the ride. I also enjoyed the other characters like his assistant and partner. I also enjoyed the detectives parts in the book once they entered the scene. I look forward to reading the next book!

‘Boardroom Assassin’ by R.L.Hare is based on a very unusual premise. I won’t share the storyline because it would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say, that it is a very different kind of story, and keeps you engrossed. The only drawback is the sag in the middle of the story. Apart from that, it’s well worth reading.

This book was a page turner from the start! I thought the title was to do with his ruthless business deals but then came the good part! Goes to show you that by watching crime shows on TV will not save you.
The ending was quite abrupt, is there a part 2? Kinda left you wondering if Rick was actually caught?

This book was such an enjoyable ride. It was so well thought out. I have never despised a main character so much. Rick is a pretentious arrogant ass and so well written too. I couldn't put this down and couldn't wait to see where it went. Loved it!

Right now, the synopsis doesn’t quite pull me in. It mentions the characters and setting in a factual way, but it lacks a compelling hook or conflict. There's no clear idea of what Rick Frown is up against, what makes Detective Kolonik unique, or why I should care about their story. A bit more urgency or a tease of the main tension would elevate reader interest.

Boardroom assassin is a book which flows, intriguing in itself and smooth. It's a story which keeps you turning the pages with a steady pace, not the rollercoaster of dopamine and sharp descent. The main character Rick has been created with a really good, steady hand, he just reminds you of a dare I say psychopathic thinker.
