Circle of Hope #2

Unending Hope

Rate this book
As WWII expands across Europe, members of the Circle of Hope are drawn deeper into the struggle to survive in the face of overwhelming adversity.

April 1940. Nazi Germany carries out a devastating invasion, trapping Americans David Jensen and Natalie Thompson in Norway. Determined to use their medical skills to aid the Norwegians, David and Natalie embark on a harrowing journey to treat the injured and evade the Nazis.

Natalie, a dedicated Red Cross worker, values deep relationships. Fearful of settling for a shallow marriage, she broke off her engagement to David several years before. But she never stopped loving him and spending time working together in Norway plays havoc with her heart.

David, a charismatic and confidant doctor with the Red Cross, desires to advance his career and rekindle his relationship with Natalie. Even though she once rejected him, he believes she is the only woman for him. But years of keeping others at arms’ length guarantees that winning Natalie back will be the biggest challenge he’s ever faced.

The saga introduced in Abounding Hope continues in this inspiring second installment of courage and devotion.

Readers of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and Lee Jackson’s After Dunkirk series will love this book.

Cindy Kay Stewart, a retired high school teacher and current church pianist, writes stories of hope, steeped in love, and anchored in faith. She is passionate about revealing God’s handiwork in history. Cindy's debut novel, Abounding Hope, finaled in the 2024 Holt Medallion Award, the 2024 FHL Reader's Choice Award, and the 2024 Christian Market Book Award.

A native of Southern California, Cindy has lived on both coasts, including a sojourn in between. She’s currently happy to make her home in North Georgia where she enjoys the peaches. Cindy graduated from Bob Jones University, where she went for her "Mrs." degree. She was successful, and after forty-three years, her husband still puts up with her. While at BJU, she also earned a bachelors in elementary education. She later earned a masters degree in secondary education/history from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and School Leadership Certification through Kennesaw State University.

Cindy has always enjoyed telling stories—first to her dolls and teddy bears and then to her neighborhood playmates. She wrote her first book of stories and poems in second grade.

Cindy’s desire to write Christian novels was kindled after college, but it wasn’t until her daughter married that she had time to invest in the art of writing and publishing fiction. She had to promptly forget everything she’d learned about writing in school and develop a new skill set. That skill has grown through the years.

Cindy loves to research and “dig up” fascinating nuggets from history to share with her readers. She enjoys surprising people by weaving true historical events into her fiction—especially those happenings that seem too unbelievable to be true. But they are and she can prove it!

Cindy loves playing the piano and singing in the choir at her church. She’s an extrovert, which sometimes gets her in trouble. She tends to talk too much and has been known to drive her friends crazy at times. After thirty-two years in education, she retired to pursue her dream of publishing Christian historical fiction.

It’s a good thing that Cindy’s husband is a gourmet cook or the family would starve. She can follow a recipe, but who has time to read one?

Most of all, Cindy loves to point people to Jesus Christ, her Redeemer, and she wants others to experience the same joy He’s poured out on her so abundantly.

This is book two in the Circle of Hope series and although it can be read as a stand-alone I recommend not missing book one and finding out the background story of these characters. I loved that the author delves deeply into these characters lives with their thoughts and feelings and is written in such a way that you feel it with them. Although a longer read you will enjoy every moment as the story unfolds. It delves into the invasion of Norway as these friends gather for a wedding and we travel throughout the area as they take different courses according to their jobs and how their lives cross paths at times and end up from France to England. This has been well researched and at times shows the ugliness of war which makes tears flow or sweet unfolding romance that shows in the midst of the storms of life God still has a plan. I love the courage and unwavering faith Natalie portrays as she grows and learns to trust again. David is not just a doctor helping those who need him in the battle journey but he is on a faith journey and that makes this an even more amazing experience. I appreciated how intricately woven the historical facts and characters are written alongside the fictional characters as it is all brought to life and into your heart. Leaving you to ponder just how much strength, faith, and bravery it takes to try to make a difference in this harrowing time. I highly recommend taking the time to read this one.

I think this is the first World War II story I have read that is set in Norway, so it offered an opportunity to learn about a different area and how the war affected the country plus more about the International Red Cross. The main characters work for the Red Cross, Americans Dr. David Jensen and nurse Natalie Thompson. Trapped in Norway after their friends’ wedding, they endure danger and drama as they seek to escape the encroaching Germans and to help those in need of medical care. The exciting tale lags a bit in the middle as it gets bogged down with details and so many days seem similar. I think perhaps it could be tightened to keep up the faster pace that fits the setting and events. You can’t help but care about the characters and their trials as well as admire their bravery and heart for serving others. This series is best read in order since this novel picks up where the first book left off. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

My Thoughts

Unending Hope is a gripping Christian Historical Fiction story that is written by
Cindy Kay Stewart. This is book two in the Circle of Hope series. If you’ve not read the first book that’s ok. This book can be read as a stand alone.

The author transports us back to April 1940, during the early phases of World War II, specifically during the German invasion of Norway. This leaves Natalie and David trapped. Determined to use their medical skills, Natalie is a Red Cross Worker and David a doctor. Being present after the invasion exposes the two of them to the truth about the Nazi invasion. I really felt the author did a great job in showing this piece of history through the characters eyes. The invasion of Norway is not something that is overly written about so I was nice to see the war from a different lens.

The author has crafted a. blend of historical adventure, romance, and faith-based inspiration. The novel emphasizes Christian faith, the power of hope in dire circumstances, and the assurance that God works even in wartime. The characters are well developed. The story is historically accurate.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book — all thoughts are my own.

Historical fiction is my favorite genre, with World War II being among my most favorite eras. It's fun to read from a variety of perspectives, from various locations.

Reading Unending Hope, which is set in Norway, brings a unique perspective on the War. It is certainly a captivating story, and kept me engaged until the end. The second-chance relationship between David and Natalie is sweet and hopeful. It's an inspiring story all the way around.

If you enjoy Christian historical fiction, with a touch of romance, this is another one for your TBR list.

Unending Hope is the second book in the Circle of Hope series by Cindy Kay Stewart. The story follows closely after the first book in the series, so it's best to read them in order. The author has done a lot of research to make a great Christian historical story that covers real events at the beginning of WWII. This is such a well written story that it was easy to imagine the events happening. I really enjoyed the wonderful caring characters. The story follows three different couples as they flee Norway as it is invaded.

This is such a good story. I like how David and Natalie put themselves in danger to help others while working on their relationship. I especially enjoyed how David is asked a question about his Christian feelings by one of his patients. This leads to him examining his feelings. This is so inspirational. I enjoyed how God out them in the same place as they travel with war efforts.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

God is still working, even through times of darkness

What a wonderful story of such strong couples who served the Lord through such tragic circumstances of war. It’s a story of encouragement and hope with lots of supporting scripture. Is there a book 3?

Unending Hope is a blend of historical details and Christian fiction that is seamlessly intertwined, flowing beautifully. The sweet love story that continued despite the ongoing war with Germany kept me turning the pages. I couldn't put it down. I had to find out what would happen next. Things were constantly evolving—a well-thought-out story with interesting characters.

David and Natalie attend a wedding in Norway, only to find themselves in the midst of a war that seems to follow them as they attempt to leave the country. When it seems impossible, they volunteer at the hospital to take care of the wounded soldiers. Even put themselves in danger as they take on more duties.

The story is about faith, love, courage, obedience, trust, and hope. I enjoyed following David's awakening to obedience to God's calling and following his true path. Natalie had a strong faith, but worried about David's. I admired them both. There were other couples in the story that contributed to the fellowship and the danger they endured. The ending wrapped up everything nicely. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

Doctors, Nurses and Gold

Three stories of Friendship and how sometimes a wedding can pull them apart. Reading the second book in this series was so easy to get back into the story. From England to Norway, to France and Belgium and then back to France again, reading how three friends used their gifts for service was remarkable. Come along for their adventures during 1940.

“If only he could go back several years and change their last months together, Natalie would be his wife now instead of his ex-fiancée.”

Unending Hope by Cindy Kay Stewart is the second in the Circle of Hope Series. A Christian high school in Paris is the meeting place for many friends who years later gather in Norway for the wedding of Anne to Erik, a Norwegian banker. Unfortunately, just two days after the wedding, the Nazis invade Norway, trapping six friends in the country.

While we follow the side stories of newly-weds Erik and Anne, and also newlyweds Irena and Jonathan, David and Natalie are the main focus of this book. Having once been engaged, Natalie had broken it off with David a few years ago. Unable to see his own self-absorption, David doesn’t understand the cause of their breakup, and he continues to carry a torch for Natalie.

With the Luftwaffe swiftly moving into the Norwegian airspace, there is plenty of danger to test the mettle of all three couples. Twining all three escape stories together makes for a tight and tense story and more chances to see the advance of the German army as it happened in Norway’s history.

I think this book would be especially good for someone who likes stories about WWII and also might be trying to figure out God’s will for their lives, especially as regards one person who may not be a dedicated believer. David claims to be a believer, but he has no interest in praying, reading his Bible, or following God’s will. Stewart sets up some surprising tertiary characters who show David there is a difference.

Stewart liberally uses Scripture throughout the novel, and includes short prayers of her characters. We see where each is spiritually. Interestingly enough, even the one that seems the most spiritual finds roots of sin to be weeded out of their heart. A reminder to us all to be careful of judging others as we harbor sin. One of Natalie’s wise friends reminds her, “…unforgiveness always destroys a person’s soul. Don’t close off your heart because of the past.”

With bombs aplenty, air raid sirens frequently going off, fires from said bombs, rush to stay one or two cities ahead of the Nazi invasion and ensuing chaos of war, I feel a little off-kilter. I could almost smell the fires, and I definitely cringed imagining the sirens. Reading of the death and destruction the characters faced, but continued to work in the midst of, wow! We need to be reminded of that bravery and loyalty.

Unfortunately for the reader, Stewart sets herself up nicely for the need for book three. Once again, we’ll be watching the skies from behind blackout curtains!

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

A sweet love story set in troubled times. Based on true events during World War Two, the novel follows the life of three sets of couples, two of whom visited Norway for the wedding of the third (Erik & Anne), in the days just prior to Nazi Germany's completely unexpected invasion of Norway.
The novel follows the adventures of Erik & Anne, David and Natalie and Jonathan & Irena with their five adopted children. The last couple had just managed to escape along with five children from a Poland slowly crushed by the Hitlerian boot. They are all on the Gestapo hit list, even five year old Heidi.

Erik is a part of the courageous, beleaguered Norwegian government fleeing just a step ahead of the Nazi blitzkrieg, along with the monarch and Crown Prince. He is tasked with a job of utmost secrecy and grave national import. It's imperative he and his bride stay ahead of the Nazi blitzkrieg.

David is a doctor with the French Red Cross and Natalie a nurse with the American Red Cross. Former sweethearts, they are thrown together and offer their services at each of the hospitals treating the wounded, as they flee the German advance across Norway. Of the three couples, their American citizenship might help keep them safer than most for now, but they aren't staying to find out.

Do they all make it out safely out of Norway? Does Erik complete his task? This novel is filled with markers of faith, hope, love and the providence of God during some of Europe's darkest hours, showing that ultimately, despite man's free will choices to steal, kill and destroy and devour, God was/is still sovereign and was/is still on His throne, despite all odds, even when the world felt ruled by a madman and dark and bleak.

I was given a copy by Celebrate Lit but this review is my honest opinion.

Unending Hope is book two in a wonderful historical fiction series taking place during World War II that you’re not going to want to miss! While you can read this as a standalone novel, you’re not going to want to. You should definitely read Abounding Hope first before this one. It’s not necessary, but it will give you two books instead of one to read, and you will not regret it.

This novel is set in Norway, which is a unique setting. You’ll love the culture that comes through and the bits and pieces of history to help you learn what the war was like for people of this country. No one was left untouched by the war.

Our main characters are Red Cross workers. One a Doctor and one a nurse. These two have had a failed relationship before, but are still friends.

Will they evolve their relationship under the fierceness of war?
They’re trapped in Norway after attending a friend’s wedding. They’re determined to help those who need their medical attention, but they also need to stay ahead of the Germans so their paths don’t cross.

I love historical fiction. WWII particularly holds my heart. I have read the first book in the series and definitely look forward to this one being released. The characters are wonderful. The danger is real. And faith is a central component of the novel. Not only will you learn history and swoon over a romance, but you’ll be challenged a smidge in your faith as well. This makes a marvellous read and one I’ll keep on my shelf.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7

I waited a year and a half for this sequel. And having just completed it, my heart still pounds and I cannot stop saying “WOW!” The action never stops in this wartime adventure that has left me breathless. I will need a few days to recover before being able to move on to another story.

I have read a lot of WWII fiction, but never one highlighting Norway. I enjoyed learning about the war from a different perspective, especially since it was extremely historically accurate. I looked up names and places as I was reading, and the author separates fact from fiction at the end of the novel. An astounding amount of research went into creating this series. The map of Norway at the beginning greatly helped me follow along to the many places mentioned.

The strong characters in book 1 return to book 2, even more vibrant and believable than before, while another gripping epilogue anticipates an exciting book 3. Unending Hope can be read alone, but it will be much more meaningful to start with Abounding Hope to get the larger picture.
Above all, as these friends battle the enemy, threads of spiritual truths stitch everything together to create a love story worth fighting for. Deep faith and hope in God carry them through this difficult war, and the narrative would have been far less effective if not told through a strong Christian worldview.

If you like historical fiction by authors such as Amy Lynn Green, Amanda Barratt, and Roseanna White, then pick up this series, being fully warned that it is impossible to put down.

This is a WW2 story that takes place in Norway trapping two American Red Cross aid workers in that country. David and Natalie have both been sent oversees to help those in need with their medical skills. They both also have a history together as they were once engaged. Now their main focus is to make it out of the combat zone alive, and David wants to win Natalie back, and make her his wife.

This story is full of danger as the war is heating up. It takes place over only a couple of months, but it seems the characters have lived a lifetime for what they must go through. I liked that their faith played such a huge part in their lives, especially since they weren't sure if they would make it out of Norway alive. It also helped them to treat those that needed their help in such a highly stressful situation.

This story is the second in a series, about a different couple, but together gives a bigger picture of the circumstances these couples are facing. If you like WW2 stories and want to know about what was going on in Norway during this time, this is great book to start with.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

A Beautifully Written Story of Faith, Love, and Survival
I was completely drawn into this story from the very beginning. Set during the Nazi invasion of Norway, the setting felt both fresh and vividly portrayed. The fear, the disruption of everyday life, and the uncertainty all came through in such a real and emotional way. I could practically feel the ground shake as bombs fell around Natalie. Those moments stayed with me!
This is the second book in the series, and while it builds beautifully on the first, it can absolutely be enjoyed on its own. That said, returning readers will appreciate how the story continues to deepen emotionally and spiritually.
The romance between Natalie and David is tender and authentic, a quiet love story growing in the shadow of war. But what touched me most was the faith element, which was woven in with care and honesty. It didn’t feel preachy at all. Instead, it was a reminder that trusting God isn’t always easy, but it’s what carries us through when nothing else makes sense.
If you enjoy WWII fiction with depth, heart, and a strong spiritual thread, I think you’ll really enjoy this one! It’s a reminder of how love and faith can survive even the darkest chapters of history.

Christian Historical Romance, especially those based during War Time, are a favorite genre of mine. Unending Hope by Cindy Kay Stewart is Book 2 in the Circle of Hope series. I read Book 1 in this series and have been anticipating this book release.

WOW, this storyline is so amazing and engaging. The setting is Norway in April 1940. The main characters are David Jensen and Natalie Thompson. They are both working for the Red Cross in Norway after the Nazi's invade. Natalie and David were once engaged, but Natalie broke off the engagement. They both have made great careers for themselves, David being a Dr. with the Red Cross. They also have never had the flame for one another completely distinguished, as they both have feelings for one another. David has always believed Natalie was the only one he ever really needed in his life. The book really tugged at my heart with the LOVE story between Natalie and David. Also, I really LOVE how they were both Medical workers with the Red Cross. The book was very strong on Historical Facts and takes the reader back to the time period of 1940 through the words of the book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance, especially during WWII times. AMAZING BOOK!

Another winner! Once again Cindy Kay Stewart has written an artfully crafted and compelling story of one of the less commonly covered aspects of WWII, the invasion of Norway. Unending Hope continues the story of characters from her debut novel, Abounding Hope, to share the harrowing days during the Nazi occupation of Norway in 1940. As Natalie and David battle the ravages of war with their medical skills, the battle in their hearts at being thrust together again after years of separation is just a strong as their desire to help and their need to avoid capture. A broken engagement left them both doubting their future together but now the only future they may have left is here and now as they work alongside each other. Any fan of WWII history and inspiring second chances will enjoy this book. Well done, Cindy. Your attention to historical detail and your portrayal of these intriguing characters kept my attention page after page.

“The wail of the sirens hadn't stopped. How could anyone sleep with all that racket? With the sound of impending doom elevating their blood pressure?"

If that quote doesn't get your heart pumping a little faster, the developing romance between two of this book's main characters, David and Natalie, will. Having attended a wedding in Norway of mutual friends, these two, who were once engaged to each other, find themselves stranded there by Luftwaffe attacks. If they survive to live another day, will they also live to love each other again?

I found both of these characters relatable and likable and rooted for David to win back the heart of the woman he never stopped loving but didn't know how to show her that love.

As a super fan of the first book in this series, Abounding Hope, I was grateful for the continuing storyline of Irene and Jonathan. Although you don't have to read Book One in the Circle of Hope series to enjoy Unending Hope, you will enjoy seeing the beginning of Irene and Jonathan's love story before it continues to unfold in Book Two.

With this book we get an inside look at a war where devastation was everywhere when the air raids went off. I felt like I was hiding with them in the shelter. I could imagine the terror that sound gave to people. Running for their lives they didn’t know if they would survive or what they would find after the bombing ended. The author creates a story that gave me chills as I followed the characters on a journey filled with faith, danger and an illustration of courage.

Each character brings depth to the story as we see how they interact with each other during difficult times. David and Natalie are a beautiful example of second chances. The war brings them back together to help others who have been injured in the battle for freedom. I appreciate how the author does not rush this emotional journey but lets readers feel each challenge they face. The historical facts are good and helped me understand how this group faced uncertainty from an enemy with a thirst for power.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I’ve always enjoyed stories set during World War II, especially those about people who served or helped others. Unending Hope is one of those stories, filled with interesting characters who are easy to care about and support.

David and Natlie’s relationship is exciting to follow. I admired their bravery and hoped their second chance together would succeed. I liked the focus on hope, trust, and faith, and I noticed how much the characters, especially David, grew in their faith.

I also liked that the story is set in Norway, which gave me a whole new view of the war. Since I enjoy second chance stories, this story was especially satisfying. I really liked how the romance developed naturally in such a dangerous and challenging time.

A group of former classmates attend a friend’s wedding in Norway. Two days later, the Germans invade. David and Natalie were once engaged. He wants her back; she’s wary. As a physician with the French Red Cross, David contributes his services to the wounded. As an American Red Cross nurse, Natalie assists him as they make their way north to safety. Their friends, newlyweds Eric and Anne and Jonathan and Irena also struggle to escape the invaders.

This is book two of a series. Irena and Jonathan’s story was featured in book one. It would have helped to have read that one first, but enough is mentioned to follow their storyline without difficulty.

The setting in Norway and the confusion caused by the invasion made the story so interesting. Also, David’s conviction that he needed to be a stronger man of God.

During the German invasion of Norway in 1940, David Jensen, a brilliant doctor, and Natalie Thompson, a skilled and dedicated nurse, both with the Red Cross, work together in Norway to treat wounded soldiers. They were engaged at one time, but Natalie broke off the engagement. She felt that they were drifting apart. She also has a strong faith in God and is wondering about David’s faith.

David makes friends easily, and he wants to win Natalie back. He admires her strength, her skills and empathy with the patients. As they work together, they draw close and each of them sees the strength and dedication in each other. Natalie also sees that David is drawing closer to God. They both want their lives to count, and they want to do the work that God calls them to do.

A compelling story of adventure, faith and second chances.

Captivating. Oh my heart what an intense journey for Natalie and David, as well as the rest of the Circle of Hope. They'd both been through so much and had learned much. They both continued to grow in faith and strength, learning to trust and love one another. Their story will keep you holding your breath to the end as they travel history's road. You have to love it - makes you eager for another until awful WW2 is over.

"Unending Hope" by Cindy Kay Stewart is a story of second chances in 1940 and German invasion of Norway. This is the second book in the series. Biblical passages are part of this book storyline. This is a story of faith and hope, I really recommend reading the books in order even though they can be read as standalones, characters from the first book appear in this second book as well. These stories help readers really understand more about what it is to live in a land where war is happening. If a reader enjoys Historical Christian Romance, I truly recommend both books.
