This is a Women's Psychological Fiction (I would not call this a Thriller). This is a fast moving story with a ton of drama. There is a ton of family drama. This book jumps from now to then, and it honestly drove me crazy going from now to then. I found I was not totally into this story at times, and the characters drove me crazy at times. I loved how this book ended. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

This is a great page turner that I couldn’t put down about a mother whose daughter returns home from university with her new fiancé. There are however two problems with this one he was her teacher when she was in school and two her has a secret history with her mother that threatens to blow her world apart. As the girl starts to wonder why her mum seems so scared and uncomfortable around him we are taken on a very dark and twisted tale of revenge and lies. Don’t miss this one!

The last couple of months, I've been introduced to several authors whom I'm reading for the first time. And I have not been let down at all so far. These books are good!

The Son-in-law by Ellie Monago is the next in a series of first-time reads for me. The only problem with these books is that they make me want to go back and read their entire catalogue 😭 as my never-ending TBR looks on.

Anyway, back to this book. It is the story of Diana, who is eagerly waiting to meet her daughter, Lizzie, at a steakhouse. Lizzie, who goes by Lise now, has reached out, asking her to meet her and her new fiance. There is another reason for Diana's eagerness - she wants to reconnect with her daughter, with whom she had virtually lost contact after the latter's teenage years, even though they were living in the same house.

But when Lise's fiance walks in, Diana's world is turned upside down. Because he is none other than Gavin Axelrod and she knows he is here to create hell on earth for Diana and her family.

As she watches Gavin's antics, she decides she must rescue Lise from his clutches. But how can she, when her own daughter is so distrustful of her?

As Diana struggles with her own conscience, we also see Lise questioning her own and her mother's actions. Throughout the course of a week, the drama unfolds, as each party tried to one-up the other. In a nail-biting fashion, we see Diana pitting her wits against the indomitable Gavin.

I won't lie, the drama brought forward some of my old memories to the forefront. This story is a powerful reminder that abuse is not only physical but also psychological.

As we already know who the antagonist is, this is not a typical domestic thriller. It is more of a race against time as Diana tries to outwit Gavin before her daughter decides to marry him.

The ending came a bit abruptly to my liking and it was a tad too convenient. People acting out of character to achieve a certain ending is not my most favourite but I can let it pass for this book because the lead up was great.

4 stars.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

Diana and her husband Ron have been invited to dinner with their daughter, Lise. She has something big to tell them, but as per usual, Ron ignores the request, leaving Diana alone when she gets the shock of her life: the door opens, and Lise walks in with her new man. Only this is not a new man, this is Gavin - aka Mr. Axlerod, Lise’s former high school teacher.

Diana’s head is spinning. Why is HE there? Why is he engaged to her daughter? It turns out that Gavin has some old business to attend to, and he’s wormed his way back into Lise’s life. But did he really come BACK, or has he been there all along? Was her child groomed by this disgusting, controlling man?

Though there aren’t a lot of spoilers, I don’t want to say much more, because the synopsis says very little. It may be because there is very little to this plot. Most of the chapters are from Diane and Lise’s points of view, both in the past and present. There is a lot of drama to wade through with this one, and it’s a slow burn to the very end.

This was entertaining enough, but I wouldn’t read it again. As I mentioned, the plot was lacking something, and there weren’t very many parts that surprised me. I didn’t feel for any of the characters, and the ending was almost like a shoulder shrug. The book and story overall weren’t it for me, but I’ve seen some really good reviews, so it may just depend on your taste. Three stars.

(Thank you to Bookouture for inviting me on this book’s tour. “The Son-In-Law” is set to be released on October 13, 2025.)

This book is a twisty, gripping domestic thriller that explores the tension between past mistakes and present danger. When Diana’s daughter brings home her new fiancé, Gavin, Diana is shocked—because she knows him from a dark chapter in her own life. What follows is a tense psychological battle, as Diana must choose between protecting her daughter and hiding her own devastating secret.

Ellie Monago’s writing hooked me from the beginning. The author’s builds suspense, weaving between past and present to slowly reveal the truth. For me, I was easily engaged in the story wondering how this all was going to play out. The characters are flawed and complex, especially Diana, whose maternal instincts drive much of the emotional weight. Gavin makes for a quietly menacing antagonist, and the twists kept me wanting to quickly turn the pages.

I would say this book is for those who enjoy domestic suspenseful thrillers that explore parental fears, secrets and slow burning tension.

The Son-in-Law is DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA..and I loved every moment of it! The level of deceit in this tale is insane, and honestly I don't feel bad for most of the key players in this twisted little game.

I will admit, the ending left me aghast.....ah revenge!

What would you do if your daughter introduced her fiancé to you? Normally, you would be happy and curious — or maybe not…

Diana gets the shock of her life: she comes face-to-face with the man she hoped never to see again. He knows her secret — but what is he doing in the company of her daughter? Diana must try to stay calm while figuring out what Gavin is planning. He’s dangerous — but could he be just as dangerous, or perhaps even more so, than before?

The story is told through two — or should I say three — perspectives. On the one hand, there’s Diana, and on the other, there’s her daughter Lizzie as a teenager, and then Lise, a few years later as a young adult. In the final chapter, we hear yet another voice.

Flashbacks are also used to sketch the background and show why Diana is struggling so much with Gavin’s return.

The author has written a fantastic story with tension that slowly but surely builds. Certain characters are pushed into a corner and pour out their deepest emotions in an attempt to open someone’s eyes and expose the true nature of the master manipulator.

The ending was surprising and something I didn’t see coming. And then there was the final chapter. It was unexpected too, though for me it could have been developed a little more.

A very good book. 4.5 stars.

Thank you.

What an intense read!
The tension is immediate when Diana's daughter, now Lise (don't call her Lizzie!) arrives home with her new fiancé Gavin.
Diana is instantly horrified as this man is not only her ex-lover but also Lise’s former schoolteacher. Alternating between the past and present, the story illustrates a web of secrets, lies, and betrayal.
The narrative expertly exposes Lise’s teenage vulnerabilities and Diana's crippling insecurities, and as Gavin's obsessions increase the danger, the atmosphere grows darker, with unspoken history and deeply unsettling relationships. The ending adds another huge shock and all loose ends are tied up as neatly as a gift wrapped book of poetry.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. This is my own opinion.

Diane is thrilled to reconnect with her daughter Lise (formerly known as Lizzie—but don’t call her that!) and finally meet her fiancé. But when the couple walks in, Diane’s excitement turns to shock—the fiancé is not only Lise’s former teacher, but Diane’s own manipulative, toxic ex-lover!

Told through alternating “then” and “now” timelines, this story unravels layers of secrets, guilt, and twisted love. Diane’s desperation to protect her daughter—while hiding her own past—makes for a tense, emotional ride from start to finish.

While it tackles some very heavy topics (so definitely check triggers), Monago handles them with realism and depth. The Son-in-Law is dramatic, disturbing, and completely addictive—with an ending I never saw coming!

Every girl dreams of taking her fiancé to meet the parents. What they don't expect is there being a past with their own mother of all people...like WTAF!

This was good, like seriously twisty and tangled good. It runs fast and switches between the then and now.

The secrets. The lies. A thirst for revenge AND an unhinged family...It's a full on 'got it all going on' drama, fuelled on tension and suspense.

Addictive reading.

This book is so good because you just don’t know which way it’s going to end! It flows so nicely and it’s easy to read. I had a few ideas of how this book could have went – there were definitely a few different paths for an ending, but I really liked the ending that this author chose!

If you like family dramas, then this book is for you! This is full of family drama. There is a LOT going on with Diana. She’s got a few secrets that she is hiding from her family. Lise very much seems like a pawn that is being used in the game. Gavin is pure evil, or at least that’s how I looked at him. We get chapters that are in the past and the present mostly from Diana and Lise’s points of view. I think there are one or two chapters from Ron, Lise’s dad, and Gavin. I do wish we would have gotten more chapters from Gavin’s point of view.

This book is a standout domestic thriller for me. I also really enjoyed something else at the end between Diana and Lise, but I don’t want to give anything away. I think you should just go ahead and pick this book up. It’s out now!

My first book by Ellie Monago and another author to go on my favourites list. What a twisted addictive read this was!

Diana is excited to meet her daughter’s new fiancé and is hoping to build bridges as their mother-daughter relationship hasn’t been close over the years. Diana hopes this new chapter in Lizzies’ life will help heal their relationship and Diana is also happy that Lizzie is forging ahead with her new life as it means that Diana can finally divorce her husband, Ron. Diana got pregnant with Lizzie by Ron when she was only 16 and was railroaded into marriage. Unfortunately, their marriage has been loveless, manipulative and also emotionally abusive but Diana knew leaving Ron before Lizzie was an adult would mean that Ron would use Lizzie as a target to hurt Diana and so Diana has stayed in the marriage putting up with all Ron’s bad behaviour, but Lizzie’s engagement means Diana can finally leave. However, when Lizzie presents her fiancé, Gavin, to Diana she is horrified, not only is Gavin Lizzie’s old English teacher with a 9 year age gap between them, but he is also the man with whom Diana shares a past and who knows one very big life changing secret of hers. If Gavin reveals the secret that he knows, Diana’s life, as she knows it, will change for the worse; it would certainly mean an end to her marriage and not on her terms, plus leave her penniless and also destroy any hopes of a possible future relationship with Lizzie. Diana cannot believe it is a coincidence that Lizzie and Gavin have got together. Diana is desperate to expose Gavin and keep him from potentially ruining Lizzies’ life like he almost ruined hers but exposing him will mean that she is also exposed. Will Diana be able to find out Gavin’s true motives before it is too late for Lizzie? And, to what lengths will Diana have to go to ensure her beloved daughters’ safety?

Well, what a great read this was. I was struggling to put this down right from the very beginning and ended up losing sleep as I kept telling myself “just one more chapter”. I loved the different POV’s and also Diana’s character development throughout the story. The pace really kicked up a notch in chapter 21, as this was the first time we had heard from this particular character, and I loved it! At times I did find myself wanting to shake Lizzie in the “now” parts of the story as I felt she was very naïve and was ignoring every single red flag that she was being shown but I kept reminding myself that she was only 21 and also had led a pretty sheltered life so her behaviour was understandable from that point of view. I have to admit the “baddie” in this book was probably one of the most manipulative and unhinged ones I have ever read about, and I have read a lot of psychological thrillers with unsavoury characters so that’s a pretty good accolade for Ellie Monago. I did not see the ending coming, in fact as the story went on, I had no idea how things would get wrapped up but Ellie Monago did a really good job, it was brutal and a great ending.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this one to any psychological thriller fans. A very muchly deserved 5 star rating and I can’t wait to see what Ellie Monago writes next.

Thank you to NetGalley, Ellie Monago and Bookouture for my advanced reading copy. Out now.

The tension was palpable from the very first page! Lise was brimming with excitement as she introduced her fiancé, Gavin, to her parents. However, Diana’s heart sank completely. Who was Gavin, and why did his presence leave Diana so bewildered?

Diana has a history with Gavin. In fact, he was Lise’s teacher not all that long ago. Their relationship went beyond a parent-teacher dynamic; it was deeply intertwined. However, it took a dark turn when Diana revealed a shocking secret to Gavin during their tumultuous time together. She believed her secret was safe, as she never anticipated seeing Gavin again. Fear, doubt and mistrust now plague Diana.

Lise assures her parents that nothing inappropriate occurred between them while she was in school. But now, Lise seems utterly enchanted with Gavin, while Diana is losing her grip on reality. Should she diligently keep that dreadful secret hidden, or will her focus shift to protecting Lise? This is a crucial question, as Diana doesn’t trust Gavin.

The drama escalates! Lise is in the dark, Diana is gripped by fear, and Gavin holds all the cards. As is common in many novels, this story unfolds through a dual timeline narrative. Readers gain a good understanding of the events that transpired between Diana and Gavin. Moreover, Diana’s secret finally comes to light, at least for the reader. Will this revelation spell the end for Diana if Gavin chooses to disclose it? Gavin seems to be relishing the suspense, keeping Diana’s secret at bay.

This story is incredibly captivating. The interplay between Diana and Gavin is filled with intense emotions, and there’s an intriguing aspect of Gavin that gradually unfolds. Similarly, as Diana yearns to protect Lise, I found myself instinctively reaching out to protect her as well. Ellie Monago masterfully crafts Diana and Lise in such a compelling manner, while Matt is portrayed in a rather despicable light, adding to the drama’s intensity. This one-sitting read is one that will linger in my mind for a while.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Holy mother of smokes! This book is a full-throttle emotional rollercoaster with no seatbelt. I laughed, cringed, empathised. To say that it “moved me” is an understatement. It’s been ages since a story had me this hooked.

⚠️ Trigger Warnings: Sexual abuse, murder, and manipulation. Proceed with care...

Let’s talk about Diana and Lise: the mother and daughter duo that could give therapy sessions a run for their money. Their love and hate dynamic was painfully real. From snarky teenage banter to full-blown adult insults, their relationship was messy, raw, and oh-so-relatable. If you’ve ever had a “Did she really just say that?” moment with your mom, buckle up!

What I Loved:
❥ Relatable characters that felt like people you know (no judgment!)
❥ First-person narrative that pulled me right into the chaos
❥ Fast-paced and unputdownable (I practically inhaled it! LOL)

What Made Me Grit My Teeth:
❥ Twisted male villain who made manipulation an art
❥ May-December romance that was a bit too explicit and unsettling
❥ Toxic family dynamics between Diana, Ron, and Lise that never truly healed

My Ratings
Setting : ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Character Building: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Writing Style: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Message: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Final Verdict: If you’re into stories that explore second chances, the messy art of healing, and the demons we inherit (and sometimes become), this one’s for you. Highly recommended!

thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the arc 🫶
I have many thoughts about this book.
First, what a great read. The way serious situations were handled with such care, including SA of a child. If manipulation, gaslighting, abuse, and underage relationships are a trigger for you, I would steer clear of this book.
That being said, I loved how the author made this a phycological thriller that could be based on real life. I think the severity of the things talked about in this book were not taken lightly, but it was done in such a way that wasn't too on page with it all.
Now, for the juicy bits. Lizzie/Lise and her mother were very naive for many things In this book, but I think that was just typical behavior of someone being abused for so long in so many ways. Ron, however, bided his time well, making sure he had the maximum impact when all the secrets he knew of came to light.
A big 🖕 to all of the Gavin's and Ron's out there in this world, y'all can such my least favorite toe.
The thriller aspect of this book was generally good, but I do wish maybe it was a bit of a shorter book and some parts had been left out, because at some points it didn't feel like a thriller, but more like a story of abuse (which I know it also is that, but I would have liked to see more thriller aspects too).
I can say that the publisher, Bookouture, can do no wrong in my eyes and always publishes bangers, this book included.
I did love the redemption story especially for Diana, as she was the one with the most to lose, but ended up gaining the most from sharing all of her secrets and exposing Ron and Gavin for who they really were.

From the very first line—“I can’t wait to marry your daughter”—Ellie Monago sets the tone for a psychological thriller that’s as chilling as it is addictive. The Son-in-Law is a masterclass in tension, where every page feels like a quiet inhale before the next gasp.

The story follows a mother whose worst fears come to life when her daughter introduces Gavin, the man she hoped never to see again, as her fiancé. What unfolds is a gripping tale of secrets, manipulation, and maternal instinct pushed to its limits. Monago’s writing is sharp and emotionally charged, making it easy to feel the protagonist’s dread as her past collides with her present.

I loved how the suspense builds gradually—there’s no rush, just a steady tightening of the emotional screws. Gavin is the perfect villain: charming on the surface, but with a glint of menace that never quite fades. And the mother’s internal struggle—protecting her daughter while hiding a devastating secret—adds a layer of complexity that elevates the story beyond a typical domestic thriller. The pacing is spot-on, with twists that genuinely surprised me. It’s one of those books you start reading “just for a chapter” and suddenly realize you’ve devoured half of it in one sitting.

The Son-in-Law is a tense, emotionally rich thriller that explores how far a mother will go to protect her child. If you enjoy stories that blend psychological depth with page-turning suspense, this one’s a must-read.

With thanks to Ellie Monago, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

From the very first line—“I can’t wait to marry your daughter”—Ellie Monago sets the stage for a tense, unsettling domestic thriller that had me hooked immediately.

When Diana meets her daughter Lise’s new fiancé, Gavin, she’s horrified to recognize him as the one man she hoped never to see again. He knows her darkest secret—and he’s not afraid to use it against her. What follows is a chilling story of secrets, manipulation, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

I loved the dual timelines, shifting between past and present, which gradually revealed Diana’s history with Gavin and why his return is so dangerous. The structure built suspense beautifully, and I found myself needing “just one more chapter” until I’d read far later into the night than planned. Gavin is an excellently drawn villain—charming and controlled on the surface, but menacing beneath—and the mother-daughter dynamic added an extra layer of emotional depth that made the stakes feel real.

The pacing was strong throughout, and while a few twists were more predictable, others genuinely caught me off guard. The ending tied the story together in a way that felt both surprising and fitting.

Overall, The Son-in-Law is a gripping, fast-moving domestic thriller filled with tension, secrets, and jaw-dropping moments. Fans of authors like Shalini Boland, Sue Watson, and K.L. Slater will devour this one in a single sitting.

Thank you to Bookouture, Ellie Monago, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story had me locked in til the very end. The storytelling played perfectly in my mind just like watching a movie! The family dynamic, the school, the neighborhood, and the state of Texas all entwined with the characters was really great! The author helps us get to know each character so well. Diana and her daughter Lizzie really had me wanting to jump in the book and strangle them too many times. Diana is the perfect doormat. I was ecstatic when Diana showed up and showed out! She let them have it. So nice. I dont want to give any spoilers. The action is throughout the entire book!!. I love the unhinged possessiveness. It felt like anything could just pop up from around a corner. The story did not disappoint. Its thrilling and suspenseful. Its a hea in the making. It had everything honestly. Sadness. Trauma. Romance. Heartbreak. Revenge.

The title stood out to me on Netgalley and I immediately requested. Im so glad I was approved for this one! Super good 5 star book! The only thing I didnt love about this book is whenever the author was mentioning Texas.. it seemed like overkill a bit. Im born and raised Texas and I feel like we dont talk or overly mention our state. Lol I mean Texas is the best but were pretty chill and dont try hard to be Amazing or stand out, we just are/do. Lmao

The Son-in-Law by Ellie Monago
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

This was twisted. I love how Ellie tells a story. She takes the deepest, darkest situations and weaves them into powerful stories. This is heavy, and people should know certain triggers before diving in.

The way this story was told was smart. I loved the past and present tones. They helped with character development and added a dynamic angle to the plot.

Diana was a complicated character. I liked her immediately, and at times, I wanted to shake her. She was insecure and frail at times, but she found her strength and her voice.

Lise was also complicated, but in different ways. She was immature and spoiled in many ways, but she was also insecure and just trying to figure out life. I think her development was the strongest and most remarkable.

The way this book flips is bananas. I did not see how this twist worked out; having finished the book, I would have never guessed. The absolute deceit!

This is a story about forgiveness, growth, revenge, and truth. It's a perfect spooky season read, and it will suck you in and hold you hostage.

When Lise first introduces her fiancé she expects her mother to be happy and supportive however, from an uncomfortable first meeting in a local restaurant it becomes obvious that Lise’s mother is far from pleased with this news. Diana immediately recognises Gavin, Lise’s fiancé, as he was once her daughter’s high school English teacher, this fact makes her very nervous, with reasons which become obvious as the story progresses.

This tense and tightly put together psychological fiction has all the necessary ingredients for an entertaining read. We have secrets from Diana’s past to explore along with the reason why she dislikes Gavin so much and it was interesting to see Lise’s own perception of what was happening. I enjoyed the mixing of time frames labelled ‘now and then’ and the way the other characters, particularly Gavin, alter the overall dynamic making it an altogether darker story. The shadow of toxic relationships is threaded throughout the narrative, along with lots of dark secrets which are finally exposed.

With an emotionally charged atmosphere The Son-in-Law is entertaining psychological fiction which kept my attention from start to finish.

Book Review 📚
Title: The Son-in-Law
Author: Ellie Monago

Wow!! This book grabbed me from the very first page! I was instantly hooked and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. When Di’s daughter Lise gets engaged, Di is stunned to realize she knows the fiancé, Gavin—intimately. But what does he want now? Di knows one thing for sure: she has to protect Lise—and the secret she’s kept hidden for years. And she’ll stop at nothing to do it.

There’s so much happening in this story that I was never bored for a second. I really liked Di and felt so sorry for what she was going through. Gavin, on the other hand? Absolutely awful. I couldn’t stand him! The ending completely shocked me, and I loved every twist along the way.

Ellie’s writing is addictive! I can’t wait to read more of her work. This was a gripping, fast-paced thriller that I’d definitely read again.

Alright besties, The Son-in-Law by Ellie Monago is the kind of psychological suspense that will have you side-eyeing every character, whispering “what is REALLY going on here??” to yourself while you turn pages way past bedtime. This book is dark, twisty, and absolutely brimming with tension, perfect if you love domestic thrillers with a big dose of family drama.

The setup is already deliciously messy: a family opens its doors to their son-in-law, who on the surface seems charming and perfectly placed in their world. But from page one, you get this creeping sense that things are not what they seem. Secrets simmer, resentments bubble, and as the layers peel back, you’re left questioning who’s trustworthy and who’s hiding a very ugly truth. Monago builds that claustrophobic family-dinner-table tension SO well, like you’re sitting in the room, fork halfway to your mouth, just waiting for the explosion.

The characters are where the book really shines. Nobody is “perfect” here. The mother-in-law, the daughter, the son-in-law, they all feel layered, complicated, and at times deeply unlikeable (in that juicy, can’t-look-away kind of way). The son-in-law himself is magnetic and unsettling, the kind of character who makes you understand why people fall under his spell, even as you’re screaming at the page: “Don’t trust him!!” It’s that push-pull dynamic that makes this book so addictive.

The writing is sharp and atmospheric, filled with that underlying unease that never lets you fully relax. Even in the quieter moments, you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. And the way Monago handles perspective shifts and unreliable narration keeps you guessing, you’re never quite sure whose truth you’re hearing, and I loved that.

Now, why 4 stars instead of 5? A couple of pacing issues in the middle. There were stretches where it felt like the same beats got repeated, and I found myself wanting the plot to push forward faster. Also, while the climax and twist absolutely delivered (my jaw dropped), the resolution tied up a little quickly, I wanted just a smidge more fallout to really savor the impact.

That said, the journey? SO worth it. The slow build of tension, the way Monago reveals secrets piece by piece, and the psychological games being played kept me hooked. By the time the truth came out, I was practically glued to the page, unable to look away.

Final thoughts: The Son-in-Law is tense, unsettling, and addictive. It’s a domestic thriller that digs into family dynamics, secrets, and manipulation in a way that leaves you unsettled long after you close the book. Four stars from me because while it wasn’t perfect, it gave me everything I want from this genre: twists, morally gray characters, and the constant thrill of not knowing who I could trust.

Reading in Between the Wines book review #95/125 for 2025:
Rating: 3🍷🍷🍷
Book: The Son-in-Law
Author: Ellie Monago
RELEASES TODAY!!!

Sipping thoughts: This is the first book by this author, and she has already made me happy with 2 of my favorite things - multiple POVs and short chapters. I think the twists were timely and packed the right amount of punch. I did not know what to expect after seeing a particular character’s chapter, which then made me not want to put the book down. It was not what I expected in a good way. The ending had me pick my jaw up off the floor. I hope to read more books by Monago.

Cheers and thank you to @Netgalley and @Bookouture for an advanced copy of @TheSonInLaw.

This book pulled me in from the very first chapter and didn’t let go. It follows a mother whose daughter returns home from university with her new fiancé, and right away, things feel off. For one, he was her teacher when she was in school. For another, he shares a secret and dangerous past with her mother that’s been buried for years. The tension builds beautifully as the daughter starts to sense something isn’t right - her mum’s fear, the strange tension in the air, the way the past seems to creep into every moment. What unfolds is a gripping, darkly emotional story of lies, betrayal, and revenge that had me flipping pages late into the night. The twists are sharp, the atmosphere is unsettling in the best way, and I didn’t see half of it coming. If you love domestic thrillers that keep you guessing and gasping, this one’s a must-read.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A new author for me &, although described as a psychological thriller, I would say this is a driven drama.

Lise & her new fiancé, Gavin, are to stay with her parents, Diana & Ron, for a week. They initially meet at a restaurant, without Ron as he’s working late, & will then travel on afterwards. Diana is thrilled to be seeing Lise as their relationship has been somewhat fraught, she is intrigued by the mention of a fiancé but is prepared to see how things pan out. Lise proudly introduces Gavin & Diana is shocked to her core by who she sees; she knows him all too well. Intimately so.

Told in a then & now style, with chapters from different POVs, this occasionally reads disjointed but it is easy enough to understand what’s going on. The premise is an excellent idea but I felt that the ending was too neat & I finished it feeling a tad deflated. That being said, I love blood & gore thrillers, so perhaps it was just a bit light for me. Read it & decide for yourself.

Trapped in a loveless marriage after an unexpected teen pregnancy years ago, a woman discovers to her horror that her one and only precious child Lise's new fiance is none other than Gavin, the man she herself had an affair with several years ago.

Now she is desperate to protect her daughter from someone who was once Lise's high school teacher. But how can she do that when he has proven himself to be a cunning predator - one who is all too aware of the weaknesses in her relationship with her only child?

I really like Ellie Monago's stories, but this one was not my favourite. Some of the writing (especially around the hand-wringing) felt repetitive, and the premise of the mother and daughter sleeping with the same man was somewhat distasteful. But things definitely pick up towards the end, and several loose ends are tied up very satisfactorily. It gets 3.5 stars.

Diana doesn’t have a great relationship with her husband Ron and goes through each day serving his every need. When their daughter Lizzie (now Lise) comes home with her new fiancé, Diana is shocked to see that it’s Lizzies old school teacher, Gavin Axelrod. Because Gavin and Diana have a history together and are mutually bound by events that happened when Lizzie was his student some years back. Gavin knows things about Diana and her own past as he threatens to expose her to Lizzie, Ron, and her friends. A deadly game of blackmail ensues. Can Diana convince Lise that Gavin isn’t the right man for her without exposing her own secrets? Read on to find out! Thanks to the author & publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Review of ‘The Son in Law’ by Ellie Monago due to be published on 13 October 2025 by Bookouture.

Diana’s daughter Lizzie, now wanting to be know as Lise, invites her to dinner to meet her fiancé, ahead of them staying at the family home for a week. When Lise walks in with Gavin at her side, she is shocked to her core - Gavin is Lise’s former high school teacher, who she had an affair with and knows her darkest secrets.

Gavin is determined to make Diana uneasy, and tells her he is going to tell Lise and her father Ron everything unless she does as he says.

Full of complex characters, ulterior motives and many dark secrets, it makes for a compelling domestic thriller, that sprinkles in a few teasing twists before the story ends.

This was a good phycological fiction piece that has some jaw-dropping twists at the end, (not sure I would call it a thriller). This is a crazy story about a gaslighting psychopath who is greedy for not only money but attention. To follow this mother/daughter duo in current times and from the past to see how things not only progress, but to see each of them mature in their own skin and lives was nice.

As a teacher, it always gives me the "icks" to have stories told where relationships and boundaries are pushed to that of unprofessional and inappropriate. However, I have to admit this allowed for great character growth for the victims.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book.
