"Prophets are gifted with visions of light, Seers cursed by visions of darkness."
Plagued with visions of death and destruction, Seers rarely reach maturity with their sanity intact. So why has four-hundred-year-old Asteria not yet lost her mind?
With no arcane powers despite her bloodline, Asteria is searching for her place in the world. But when the veil between the worlds grows thin, and the Marked are sacrificed to the gods of the four Immortal realms, Asteria, haunted by visions of slaughter and a mysterious tattooed man, discovers she too bears a Mark.
Claimed by Nox, the God of Death and Darkness, Asteria must travel to the Immortal world, where everything she thought she knew about herself comes into question.
To survive, she must confront the twisted fate that awaits her, revealing dark secrets that were never meant to be discovered.
"Death and Divination will have you spellbound from start to finish, holding your breath till the very last sentence. Put this on your TBR immediately, if you want a book boyfriend who will look at you like you light up his dark world and a plot with plenty of mystery. I am obsessed!" - Jade Ford, author of Nature's Tributes
"This isn't just a novel, it's an experience! It grips you right from the very beginning, drawing you in swiftly to Asteria's world and life. Her story is enthralling, and I can't believe this is only the beginning." - Alaina Hope, author of When the Moon Met the Sun
Jadis Moon is a musician, literature enthusiast, and author of Death & Divination, the first book of the Balance series. She loves to write romance and fantasy, usually with angst, and always with yearning.
Growing up in the early 2000s meant that Jadis spent quite a bit of time reading and writing creative fiction on online platforms. This experience gives her a uniquely expressive voice and a precise idea of what she does and doesn’t want in a story. She believes in creating characters that are neither good nor bad–It’s more fun that way.
Jadis has had a lifetime interest in fantasy, absorbing every story she could over the last two decades. She is a sucker for romance and loves stories of self-discovery. Jadis Moon’s readers say she tells unique, compelling stories with fantastic tension. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found reading the latest slow-burn romance or hanging out with her pets.
If you love the story of a seer trapped in a temple with a cruel priestess in The Knight and the Moth, a villain shadow daddy whisking the girl away to his realm in ACOTAR (specifically the “Hello, Feyre darling” moment), and multiple immortal gods fighting over one girl in Kingdom of the Cursed, then you immediately need to pick this one up. It has everything I love: Fae, Fairies, Elves, Dragon shifters, A SHADOW DADDY!! The plot twists??? Each one is wilder than the last. And the yearning… *faints* painful, but so addictive!! And don’t even get me started on the biggest plot twist at the end that had my flabs gasted beyond repair!!! Speaking of which, Miss Jadis Moon, I need the next book like yesterday!! No rush but also… chop chop! You guessed it, this is a 5 star read for me. It was delicious. It hit the spot perfectly. I need an urgent physical copy, and the next ARC.. or I simply won’t be okay. I also want to thank Cranthorpe Millner and NetGalley for this opportunity, this was my first netgalley arc and it did not disappoint.
This was a beautiful start to a new fantasy series!! We follow our FMC as she is learning her role in a new world, while also learning about who she is after she has never really known where she belongs.
Asterin has always believed she had a “curse” as her gift of sight, only being able to see misfortunes unlike the other seers that are revered and adored, she is looked at as a harbringer of doom within her own kingdom. Nobody can even look her in the eye without feeling something ominous or wrong.
Everything changes when she is marked to die and ascend into the realm of the gods. Which, apparently isn’t all sunshine and rainbows after all. Her guide and protector is the god of death himself, Nox. The burn is slooooooow as their relationship unfolds and she learns more about herself.
It was a delightful read and I cannot wait to read book 2!
Prophets see the light. Seers see the dark. And Asteria? She sees too much… 🌑✨
Death and Divination is a moody, myth-soaked romantasy with gods, visions, fate, and a heroine who doesn't fit the mold — and that's exactly what makes her interesting.
Asteria is 400 years old, has no real powers, and is cursed with visions of darkness. She's haunted, marked, and more dangerous than she realises — especially when she's claimed by Nox, the god of death. From there, everything spirals: the veil between worlds is thinning, divine politics are unraveling, and the truth about who Asteria is begins to claw its way to the surface. 👁️🖤
This book feels like stepping into a gothic dream: heavy atmosphere, high stakes, and a constant sense that something terrible is just around the corner. The mythology is complex (sometimes a bit too complex early on), but by the last third, I was hooked and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
🖋️ What I loved: • The unique lore — prophets vs. seers, mortal vs. immortal realms, divine marks… such an intriguing concept! • The tone — dark, dreamy, and brimming with tension. • Asteria’s arc — slow-burn and full of identity-driven stakes.
🤔 What I wanted more of: • A little more clarity early on — especially around the worldbuilding. • Deeper character development in a few places, especially side characters and their relationships.
This is a really strong debut that sets up a world I’m definitely interested in returning to. Fans of dark romantasy, morally grey gods, slow-burn fate-driven romance, and heroines trying to survive the impossible — this one’s for you. 🌘📖 3.5 stars ⭐
We follow our FMC, Asteria, a seer from the mortal world. Her life has been upended after strange murders happen in town. Then we meet our MMC (honestly do not want to say too much about him bc of spoilers) but he is literally a cinnamon roll!
This book had some great twists and turns that I really enjoyed. It definitely is set up to continue into a series and is similar to most first book fantasies! I do wish there was maybe just some more detail in the story. I felt like I would read a page and then it would just dwindle down the next page or it just didn’t continue at all. I definitely needed some more world building (especially in the realms), it lacked descriptions for a lot of things that I would’ve preferred to see.
I enjoyed this book, but felt it lacking in areas. I definitely would pick up the next one though!
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for granting me an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Highlighted quotes: "It was strange to be in a temple decorated with such opulent furnishings while handing out rations to the starving, but the orders from the priestess had been clear."
"Haryk spoke. If it concerns you, it concerns us. Tell us what's going on."
"My entire world died with my friends hanging above."
My personal favourite - "I hated being interrupted when I was reading, even if it was by an entrancing god covered in blood."
"I wanted you to have choices here, Stea. You've spent far too long at the whole ms of others." "I was already behind. I'd been behind my whole life."
"You were the reason the stars fell that day your lover died. You brought the darkness."
"Waelyn had said it would be my choice which realm I ended up in, and back then I hadn't been confident which would be my home, but now I knew. I wanted to be wherever he was."

OMG. Where do I begin? this book was a brilliant story of fantasy, yearning, magic, finding yourself and the start of what I'm sure is going to be a whirlwind of a journey for our FMC Asteria. If you're looking for a romantasy with a HEA, THIS IS NOT IT. If you want brilliant world building, beautiful writing, plot twists, a relatable FMC finding her way in the world, with a side of brooding shadow daddy and his quick wit right hand man, THIS IS YOUR BOOK.
Asteria, home among the mortals, different from all the prophets, long out lived her ancestors as a seer. No one could understand why she was different, but everyone around her felt it blatantly obvious. except for her 3 main companions, Saryah, Tolith & Haryk. Until one day, she had a vision, which led her down a path she never envisioned for herself. A chosen one by the gods. Where she is then taken to the immortal world with her new companions Nox, the lord of the night realm, and his right hand man Nox. It is here where Asteria begins to learn the truth of her differences, her past memories, her true power. But what does it all mean for her? what is her true destiny?
I fell in love with Asteria, her wonder, her curiosity, her feeling as if she never belonged, I found her very relatable, I cannot wait to see how her growth continues. That being said I also quickly grew fond of Nox, his tentativeness towards Asteria, his calm to her storm, his mystery, but do not be fooled, it was evident he would burn the world for her. And lastly Drystan, Nox's right hand man, he grew on me so much through the story. he actually had me laughing out loud with his sarcasm towards the end. I love the banter and back and forth between him and Asteria, I look forward to how their relationship builds.
This book had me completely INVESTED, and now I've finished it, I feel utterly lost. WHY IS THIS BOOK NOT HYPED UP?! This has to be my newest favourite series since ACOTAR. All fantasy lovers, hell all book lovers, THIS NEEDS TO BE YOUR NEXT READ.
The ending actually made me cry out loud in horror and frustration 😂 I NEED ANSWERS MISS MOON. I was not ready for it to end so soon! I feel like my soul has been shattered 🥲.
I am going to be yearning for this world and these characters until the next one, that's for sure (no pressure Jadis 😉).
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)
4.25 stars
I only meant to read a bit of this but ended up finishing it all in one sitting lol.
"Because Waelyn isn't here, so you're going to ask me a million questions." He sighed dramatically. "Come, let's wait for him in that dusty library you so adore." I loved how much Asteria fangirled over his library.. and even thought Drystan was lovable, even if he is a grumpy goose lol. Also amused by how the God of Death and Darkness is a cinnamon roll.
"That is my name for you. It's not for anyone else to use." I loved Nox's nickname for Asteria and found their connection really interesting. A verrrrrry slow burn though. I felt as the story went on we learned there was more to the god of death than initially thought.
Also just want to say seems Lux is sus af. That ending?! Very much looking forward to the next one.
Asteria our awkward outsider was doing her best to fit into a world that did not understand her. She gave me Maevyth (Anathema) vibes, even more so with her solid group of friends who meant the world to her, even as they fitted perfectly into the world that was so unsure of her.
Her empathy may be seen as morally corrupted due to her treatment for hundreds of years. But sympathising with a murderer as she watches him unleash death didn't change my opinion on her.
This book put the slooow in slow burn but that just made any connection all the more exciting. We deserved that!
The story had twists I did not expect, a cinnamon roll of a MMC and left us on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers!!
I devoured this book within a day and feel there will be a part of me missing until I read book 2!!
Thanks to NetGallery and the publisher for the e-arc in exchange for an honest opinion.
Death and Divination by Jarvis Moon introduces us to Asterin, a seer feared for her gift of misfortune and cast aside by her kingdom—until she’s marked to die and sent to the realm of the gods. Guided by the god of death himself, Nox, Asterin begins a slow-burning journey of self-discovery, power, and trust. The worldbuilding is rich, the magic system is unique, and the writing is beautifully immersive. Asterin’s emotional growth, paired with the quiet intensity of her bond with Nox, makes this a truly compelling read. I’m already counting down to book two!
Thank you to NetGalley and Cranthorpe Millner Publishers for the ARC!
Death & Divination is a romantasy with immersive world building and a unique, eerie magic system.
The romance is an excruciating slow burn, which I loved but also made me want to grab the mc’s and tell them to just get on with it lmao. (A sign of a great slow burn imo). I kind of guessed a lot of the twists, as a lot of the tropes are common in romantasy, but they were still really entertaining to read. However, the story does drag out some of the major reveals, and the repetitive training scenes got a bit boring.
One thing I really liked was that the fmc is centuries old, not at all naive, and not conventionally attractive, which is a refreshing change for the genre. However, in the final chapters it felt like she was being uncharacteristically stupid just to end the story on a cliffhanger, which is a plot device I personally hate.
All in all, I really enjoyed this on. I think this is the start of a great romantasy series and I already cannot wait for book two!
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Death and Divination.
Once I started this book, I finished in 24 hours. Our female main character is intriguing from the start and the magic system is interesting! Every time I thought I had figured out the plot along came another twist. I absolutely will be purchasing a physical copy!
Death & Divination is a book that will draw you in & not let you put it down. I devoured this read! This is a dark fantasy romance with immersive world building, curses & prophecies, a unique magic system, an eerie almost gothic setting, & an excruciating slow burn.
Our FMC, Asteria, is a seer plagued by visions of death with a dark past she can’t seem to remember. Shes curious, & sassy, but sometimes a little melancholy, which I loved. She’s taken by the god of death & thrown into this new world where she has to do a lot of self discovery regarding what & who she truly wants, her past, & her powers.
Our MMC, Nox, is the mysterious god of death who has an interesting bond with Asteria. I loved that this man pinned for her. Very “Darcy hand flex”.
Thank you so much to NetGalley & Jadis Moon for the ARC. I absolutely can’t wait for book two!
I want to say, upfront, that romantasy can be hit or miss for me. Either I devour them in one sitting, or they end up on the dnf pile.
Thankfully, this one was in the former category!
Asteria is a seer who only sees visions of murder. After mentioning some of these visions to the people in power, her whole life goes sideways. She's pulled into the machinations of the Immortal realm at the side of the God of Death, Nox.
The first thing I have to commend is the worldbuilding. Moon did an exceptional job of building a fleshed out world with rules, without spending pages and pages of exposition to get us going. When something would pop up, she'd spend just enough time to give us the gist of a concept before moving on. As a result, there were some times where I missed the intricacies of certain races or magics or whatever, but when clarified, it was more of a, "Oh, okay, that makes sense" rather than a "where did this come from?"
I enjoyed our main character, Asteria. She was constantly on the outside, looking in, but maintained her compassion and empathy despite that. She was sassy, and full of questions (honestly, who wouldn't be?) when she was taken from the only world she'd ever known and into the immortal world she knew nothing about. Some of the foreshadowing about her character and the character around her was deftly done as well; there was some that I had guessed, but I didn't feel like the story was in any way lacking for letting me put 2 and 2 together. Rather, although I figured it some of the twists out, there was more knowledge piled on top of those that I WASN'T expecting, which was a nice touch.
I enjoyed both Asteria and Nox as characters, though I will admit the mutual pining went on a little long for my taste. That said, given some of the revelations at the end, I can see where it might make sense even if I don't fully know the why of it. Based on some of the other revelations that got brought up, I fully expect that the author has reasons for this, and I don't want to give the impression that I didn't enjoy the journey - because I did!
If you're looking for a slightly darker romantasy read, very slowburn but with lots of interesting worldbuilding and dark magic, this is the one. Just be prepared for an ending that leaves you pulling your hair and wishing for the second one!
Summary: Asteria has always been different. While her half-sister can tap into arcane magick and her friends have the power to glimpse the future, Asteria sees only death. When a strange symbol appears on her skin, she learns she’s been Marked for sacrifice to the gods. Enter Nox, the God of Death and Destruction, who whisks her away to the realm of immortals. There, Asteria uncovers a shocking truth: she is a godling. As she grows into her power, she must choose—stay in the shadows with Nox or enter the world of the other gods to learn more about who she is.
Review: This book does fantastic worldbuilding—rich, immersive, and explained naturally without info-dumping. The author manages to build a whole divine structure that feels grounded and easy to follow, which is no small feat in fantasy romance.
The real surprise, though? Nox is a god who can cook. Some of the best scenes are him making Asteria tea, dinner, or quietly caring for her in the kitchen. It’s a soft, nurturing dynamic that plays beautifully against his ominous title.
This is very much a slow-burn romance—there are no intimate scenes in this installment, but the emotional connection builds with purpose. You feel the weight of every glance, every moment of growing trust. It’s refreshingly patient.
My only wish? That I already had the next book. I’d absolutely keep reading to see more of Asteria and Nox—especially now that the stakes have been raised and the choice she faces is more complicated than ever.
Bottom line: A lush, slow-burn fantasy romance with strong worldbuilding, a compelling emotional core, and a soft Death god who cooks dinner. No spice here yet—but plenty of tension and heart. Looking forward to more.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Death & Divination Book by Jadis Moon 🔥😈🧚🏼♂️ - These are my own personal ratings!
Rating: 4/5 🪄 Wonderful story. It took me a moment to settle into the concept. Some would be weary to continue but I am not a DNF type of gal. I think detail is important and if the author seen fit to draw out setting the stage, there is a reason! I don’t read a ton of fantasy. Although, I was intrigued by the description of this book. Once I had a grasp of the story, I was HOOKED, line & sinker!
Spice: 1/5 🌶️ Since this is an ongoing series, with more detail to come, it was fitting that there were no definitive scenes in the first installment. At most, the FMC and MMC exchange glances and brief touch alluding to the slow burn occurring in the story. This excites me for the tension to continue to build amongst the rest of the series.
Overall Review: While reading this book, I was sucked in to a story that I initially thought I would never make sense of. Asteria was a force to be reckoned with, much like her mate, the God of Death & Darkness. I thought the story was unique. I love a broody yet warm MMC. I did not feel as if any of the story was predictable. I have a knack for foreshadowing the end way before it comes. This book surprised me. I could not even draw a theory of where it was going. The book does leave you with a cliffhanger. For obvious reasons, that means the story is not done. The romance is far from over and Asteria has a wild ride ahead! I genuinely loved this story. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance or fantasy.
If you are interested, Death & Divination is set to release on July 29th! I highly suggest you to support this debut author! You won’t regret it.
Romance.io doesn’t have a take just yet but that’s why I’m here! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
Wow! The story is creative, the gods are incredible, I want to read this book again and again. This book has so much happening in it that you need to keep reading so that you don't get lost. I enjoyed Nox and Dystan immensely! Nox is very caring but can also be deadly where as Dystan acts like everything and everyone is wasting his time. Asterea is just trying to find her place in the new world she has been tossed into and has had so much happen in her past that she is overly cautious about wo to trust and who she lets in close to her heart.
I honestly expected a little spice in this book, but there was none.. She obviously has feelings for Nox and he does as well, but neither of them are very good at accepting that type of love or giving that type of love.
If she has to visit all of the realms to decide where she best fits, I hope there is many more books to come. Majority of this book was held in the Night realm so we don't get a whole lot of information on the other realms. But, this opens the author up to have a different book for each realm if she chooses.
I do find that there was one question that was never answered and maybe it will be in the next books; Nox is described as God of Darkness and Death, but what is Dystan? We know he is in the Night Realm but what is his actual god title? and will she ascend into an actual God at the end of the series?
I recommend this book for lovers of God Realms and Fantasy Magic! I can't wait for the next one! Congrats on your debut novel!
Strong ACOTAR vibes combined with some classic gothic tales like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
Our MFC, Asteria, is so creepy no one dares to look her in the eyes for too long. They seem to suck people in and make the, deeply uncomfortable. Added to that, she is pale and has disfiguring scars on her body. Not a particularly common person, even in a world where elves and faeries coexist. But by some events, she ends up with tall, dark, handsome, broody AND nice in the Night World, where things in quite typical fashion start unraveling threads, one by one.
What’s so good about Death & Divination is the mystery surrounding it all. We start out in the beginning of the book knowing what Asteria knows. Considering she’s an almost 500 year old seer able to see death and destruction, this is quite a lot. But, as it turns out, she doesn’t know herself very well, or so it seems. So we get to follow along on a very typical, but well-written journey where Asteria, and us through her, discovers more about the world she lives in.
Despite going in with so little knowledge, I never felt that the pacing was off. There’s a delicious tension between Asteria and the MMC that just keeps the plot moving along nicely even in the moments where they’re physically and geographically staying put.
I, for one, am very excited to see where this series ends up. Can’t wait to read on!
Thanks to Jadis Moon, Cranthorpe Millner and NetGalley for allowing me to read this great book!
The first chapter really pulls you in, and I like that towards the last few chapters it brings you right back - and it doesn't hint at it, it's literally word for word before the author then continues with the scene. You basically are living it through the FMC and it really was done well. It's just one example of the many of how illustrative and well-crafted the story in this book was. The characters were interesting, and the plot kept you going, wanting to know more as you were uncovering little nuggets throughout the book.
I will say that I was getting a little annoyed with being given some large hint to FMC's powers and what happened in the past, only for something or someone to interrupt it and then to be steered somewhere else. You didn't get back to that reveal or its fallout until another chapter or so later. It was like the answers to the main questions were constantly being pushed towards the end for a reveal to compel you to read all the subplots between.
I am very curious though with where we go from here in the next book, so I will be keeping an eye out. This is a really good fantasy book to throw yourself into, especially for reading challenges because it's extremely engaging, it has a good cast and story, and you can finish it in either a day or a week.
⭐️ 5 – Victorian grit, slow burn yearning, and betrayal that tastes like blood in your mouth.
A period piece with occult undertones? Say less. Death & Divination lured me in from page one with rich world-building, haunting betrayals, and the kind of deliciously slow burn that has you questioning if you imagined the tension at all.
Asteria is the classic outsider—isolated, underestimated, and deeply wronged. She’s been through the wringer and is still standing, stubborn and sharp. We love an inquisitive queen. The trauma starts early, the betrayal runs deep, and by the time Nox starts calling her “Stea,” I was fully invested. The dynamic between her, Nox, and Drystan is crackling; banter, tension, mystery.
The plot keeps you hooked and guessing, even when the world feels dense with lore. It’s the kind of book you want to reread after finishing just to pick up on the subtleties. Also, Nox tending to Asteria after everything she’s been through? Softly devastating.
That ending, though? Absolutely not. I am unwell. Someone hand me book two or a séance circle, because I need answers immediately.
Jadis Moon, you have my attention. And probably my soul.
Asteria, our socially awkward, botanically interested fae FMC, who has the misfortune to be the only seer of death, has been tucked away in a temple for centuries. Her evening entertainment consists of ingesting magic mushrooms and seeing the world through the eyes of a killer. Little does she know that with the coming thinning of the veil to the immortal lands her routines will suffer and she has to face death and madness.
Fae, dragonshifters, political, intrigue, imaginative world-building…I think he falls first, who did this to you, and a continuing slow-burn. Damn, they did not even kiss.
A massive thanks for a FMC, who is not 25 but almost 500 years, with a matched MMC. And yes, the male lead and his wingman smell of pine and cinnamon, how could I not love it.
Minor gripe is that the ending was such a cliffhanger and all in all I was left with more questions than answers.
Five stars from me, as I just had to read into the early morning hours…can’t wait for the sequel!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc in exchange for an honest opinion.
For someone who reads a lot of fantasy books, l tend to start to piece together similarities from book to book, making them all feel parallel. I can confidently say that this book had a completely unique story, and is not comparable to anything else I've read. From the first chapter, I was in love with the fact that the main character was described as "unsettling to look at" with a powerful personality. This story follows Asteria, a Seer and a Prophet from a mortal realm, on a magical, ethereal, and dark journey of self discovery. She finds herself traveling across multiple realms while working with Gods and other beings on the way. The romance here is an excruciatingly slow burn, and seems like it will continue into future books. The world building is easy to follow and is straight forward, and the story itself doesn't have a dull moment. Where it lacked descriptions for certain scenes, it made up for in action and progression of the plot. I am already looking forward to the next book, since this one left off with the most brutal cliffhanger!
I had the pleasure of receiving this e-ARC for my voluntary honest review! This was a great slow burn Dark Fantasy with some spice! Was able to read this in 2days! This book drew me. I would definitely buy the physical copy of this book!
Prophets are gifted with visions of light, Seers cursed by visions of darkness."
I am absolutely baffled that this is Jadis Moon’s debut novel! I’m so grateful to have received this ARC. This was a 5-star read for me, and I hope that it gets the recognition it deserves!
Death & Divination introduces you to Asteria, an awkward outsider in a kingdom full of prophets, fae, dracons, and other magical beings! The world building was so good, I felt like I was transported wherever Asteria was.
You’ll venture into different worlds and realms. You’ll encounter elixirs, prophecies, and all sorts of other magic! Betrayal and secrets are everywhere, but the found family is so sweet. Don’t let me forget to mention that there are gods!
If all of my previous words weren’t enough to convince you, let’s talk about the romance! As a romance reader, that was my FAVORITE part. It’s a slow burn, but it’s so, so good. The yearning? Shadow daddy? Morally grey? I couldn’t get enough of it all!
The ending has left me REELING. I need the next book ASAP!
Death and Divination just pushed itself into my top 10 favorite books. For those who enjoyed a unique magic system like One Dark Window, character growth like Phantasma, and a well written, dark story: this one is for you.
Asteria is a unique seer in her kingdom and keeps to herself most of the time. After murders start happening, that she sees through her “curse”, the plot snowballs into how things are just not how they seem. This book did not have a lull for me, it was continuous without seeming rushed and held my attention. There is a slow burn romance aspect, and I myself am PINIIIIING for them!!
I loved the character development of our FMC. Seeing her come out of her shell felt like such personal growth. I loved the maturity of the characters (didn’t feel like I was reading high schoolers interact). And naturally, the ending had me tossing and turning and wanting more. Book 2 please, Jadis Moon.
Honestly just well done. This book is going to take off. Preordering for my bookshelf now
Death and Divination by Jadis Moon is the first book in a series by a debut author. The main character Asteria, doesn’t seem to have much power until she visits the immortal realm after discovering that she is marked. There she finds old enemies and new, along with some strong allies in Nox, the God of Death and his friend (and God) Drystan.
Even though I read quite a bit of urban fantasy and romantasy, this felt like a fresh take. I enjoyed the world building, the slow burn, and the set up for epic confrontations. Asteria is very relatable, she doesn’t feel like she is good enough but she studies and works hard and is able to do more than she knows. There are some good twists, and a major cliffhanger at the end.
I will point out that the story starts a bit slowly and is fairly confusing, especially with the myths and magic system that could have been clearer. But once it picked up, I was completely hooked and couldn’t put it down.
I’m definitely looking forward to the next one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Cranthorpe Millner Publishers for the eARC.
Can I just start by saying the prologue is an absolute masterpiece of poetic prose and I am obsessed. From the very first lines, I was drawn in by its lyrical beauty and the haunting tone that set the stage for everything to come.
Death and Divination delivers many of the elements I love in a romantasy: political intrigue, gothic vibes, high-stakes action, and a slow-burn romance. For a debut, it’s impressively ambitious and fast-paced, with a world that feels rich and layered.
One standout for me was the FMC, who is refreshingly older than the typical 19-year-old heroine. That added depth and maturity to her perspective, which I really appreciated.
While I didn’t personally connect with the characters or the romance on an emotional level, I can absolutely see how this story will resonate with many readers. The themes and dynamics have strong appeal, and the author’s voice shows real promise.
I’m feeling too many emotions. Thank you, NetGalley, for this arc!
This may be the slowest burn I’ve ever experienced, but also need to note that it’s still going! Should we start normalizing subtle romantic escalations when it comes to series?? I’m so conflicted with this ending. I wanted nothing more than Asteria and Nox (aka Waelyn) to give into the tension and then BOOM! It is ripped away from us.
Shout out to one of my favorite supporting characters, Drystan. The sass and comedic timing provides a lightness to the novel as you experience the various events Asteria lives through.
As I mentioned previously, I have mixed feelings about the ending. Though, part of it may be attributed to me completely hoping this was going to be a standalone, and lo and behold we have book 1 of a series. Now I’m forced to wait until when to know what happens to everyone??
May be in a hangover after this one.

ARC review - book besties we have a winner here I ATE this up 😍 this so fast paced in the best way and is a brill take on mystery magic meets gods. The FMC is a seer who is a bit of lone wolf who is whisked away into another world by a shadow daddy we all wouldn't mind meeting. It has past trauma, slow burn, mystery, intrigue, sarcasm, wit, and plot twists everywhere. The magic and realm imbalances lead to brilliant tension and questioning personal judgement. Amazing starter book to a series and I can't wait for book 2!
I’m delighted to have found this author! From the start, the lush descriptions of setting, clever dialogue and intriguing characters allowed me to just sink into this new world and be pulled along. The sense of atmosphere and place is particularly well done. Although this was an ARC for me, I will definitely be buying a copy when it’s released and I am so looking forward to reading more of Jadis Moon’s work.
I read this book before Jadis had a publisher and it was already amazing with a few good plot twists so I can’t imagine how far this series will go with more backing. Asteria is a grown woman, who I believe to be the MMC (we’ll see 👀) has the dark brooding vibes, I love a good tortured and slightly crazy MMC as well and I can’t wait to see her snap and take it out on everyone who deserves it. The author herself is also very kind and puts a lot of effort into communicating with her readers.
First Person Single POV 4.75/5 stars This had me HOOKED from the start. In a world where visions of death and destruction are considered a bit taboo, seer FMC Asteria is ostracised by her peers. She's a brilliant character with mystery surrounding her and a past that leaves even herself questioning until our Shadow Daddy MMC arrives on scene. Her land has an interesting history and fascinating magic system with fantastic world building that never left me bored. This is a slow-burn romance that ends on a cliff hanger so fair warning. I will be eagerly anticipating book 2. Thank you to the Author, Publisher and NetGalley for providing this free eArc. All opinions are my own.
