3,5 Stars! What happened with this book? Was it bad? Well no, but.. A few details here and there, along with some general issues i had regarding the writing style, the characters and the general feeling, restrained me from rating it higher.
I enjoyed this read, a lot. It was definitely highly erotic and the dystopian environment very appealing, nevertheless, i felt right away that there was a big chunk missing. Later i found out that there is also a prequel.
Anyway the characters were a bit one dimensional at some points but generally very interesting, vain -that goes out to Blaze-, somewhat childish and a bit ignorant. The story also had a few disjointed moments, but generally it was ok.
At some point i might return to read the rest of the books. There are many uncharted areas and a few awesome other stuff that need to be worked out.
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK
- Talon is an asshole, but intriguing. - Blaze and Asha have so much chemistry. - Asha is a demon hunter and Blaze a demon prince. But she decides to help him survive and stands by his side.

"When the Blood Moon rises, the demons' prince will wake from his thousand-year slumber and cast a shadow across the sun. The city will become a youkai paradise, a vast playground for perversity and vice. However, his rebirth will encompass many stages, during time we will know him only by his mark."
Alright, at the beginning of this book there's a little warning saying that, even though this is book #1, our main characters met each other in a novella named Broken Angel.
I didn't read it and I must say I understood everything. If you want to read Broken Angel, go ahead and do it [I'll do it in a few days] but if you want to read this one first, you can do it too without the worry of feeling lost. That was a great thing the author did, she guided us through the whole journey with well described details and pretty cool characters.
The story goes around Blaze needing to be as far a possible from demons who are convinced he's their true prince. He's being helped by Asha, an ex-demon hunter. We don't know why she's helping him when she should be hunting his ass down but things get really messy because, in the middle of all this situation, Asha and Blaze are absolutely attracted to each other.
I really enjoyed Blaze, he's a well built character and pretty cool but let's be real, he's eclipsed by Asha.
I loved reading about her so much. Like a lot.
This book's got it all: funny moments, steamy scenes, bad-ass characters, well developed plot and an intense storyline.
I liked the book, but I didn't love it. I honestly think the story itself would have been phenomenal if it weren't for the characters. Some of the ideas that are in this book are definitely original and pull you into the world, but at the same time the characters were a put off.
What I didn't like was the fact the characters all seemed to have the same voice, I didn't feel like there was any difference between them. If I didn't see their names written with there dialogue I'd probably have no idea who specifically it was. The main hero, if you wanna call him that, was kinda a tool. Throughout the entire book his biggest concern seemed to be his looks, and his hair. God forbid he didn't look good. This superficial issue was present among most of the male cast in this book, including the bad guy. Talon, whom happens to be the evil guy is just a sadistic weirdo who's suppose to be sensual or something. I wasn't believing that. Another character who happened to be Talons lover, was all ashamed of his body as well, even though nothing was wrong with him other than the fact he wasn't feminine. The whole m/m scenes just threw me off. I didn't anticipate that, and don't read books that have it in it. I think an m/m scene is something a guy should probably be writing, cause only they would understand what it's like, but that's just me.
Besides the characters, the other major issue is the fact this book feels more like a second in the series. I know there's a prequel novella to this series, it's even on the first page of the book. However, I feel like you really need to read that prequel to get a better grip on whats going on. The author does talk about what happened in tids bits throughout the story, but it's not the same. As soon as the book starts your just thrown into the aftermath of the novella, so it just doesn't flow for me.
What I did like was the fact that there was a strong heroine in this book. She could take care of herself, and pretty much needed to protect our MC the entire time. I also thought the idea of an organization of demon hunters controlling an entire city was interesting. I liked where the author was going with that, inside the city you needed to be wary of the demon hunters, while outside the actual demons would eat you up. The whole demon prince idea was also neat, but at the same time the MC ruined it.
I'm torn on this book, I don't think it's a bad book at all, but I dont think I'm the right audience for it either.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The novella to kick off this series was published a while ago so I can see people not reading it before this one. And while I don't think it makes a big difference, I do think that it helps to make things make a lot more sense.
Starting right where that novella ended, Blaze's life continues to get more complicated. On the run with Asha, they meet up with a copse man to try and find some answers. Instead what they find is Raven. And I definitely like him. Turns out he is the captain of the elite guard that protects the prince and was Blaze's best friend. Was being the key word. With Raven's punishment being far from normal, Blaze having no memory of his past life, and him growing up as a human it fast becomes apparent to Raven that something is definitely different about this rebirth of Blaze. Being freed by Raven of the binding tattoo before it can destroy him from the inside out, Blaze continues his change into the demon prince. Talon proves to be more of a demon than Blaze in his hunt for the two of them, killing countless innocents. Talon's pursual of them forces Blaze to chose whether or not to return to the demon realm. Seeing no other good options, he decides to follow Raven. Not knowing it at the time, but leaving Asha behind because she would never be allowed to live if she crossed over.
The ending was abrupt and had me saying "that's the end!?" But thankfully I already have a copy of the second book and will be jumping right in.
It's very easy to get into this story and root for the characters (or hate them) and the world building was done well. It's easy to visualize what's going on and get a feel for the world. One thing though is that this book could have used a little better editing because some things were obviously missed. For example, Asha was referred to as Ash a whole bunch of times. I don't know if that was purpose, but to me it just seemed liked misspellings that were not caught.

I copied the blurb from the back of the book because to be completely honest I felt like through most of this book I was completely confused. I just felt like I was missing something. This is the first book in the series and I did look it up and there is suppose to be a prequel, however it is apparently not available because I could not find it. Yes I was going to stop reading this one and buy the prequel so I could figure what was going on. I did grasp the main story and the characters and was completely intriqued I just felt like I was missing some important information. Now to be fair, that information my be revealed in future books so I guess I will just have to wait and find out.
I liked Blaze and Asha but to be completely honest I just didn't feel that much chemistry between the two of them. I will leave it as this, the book peaked my interest, I was very intriqued with the story, and I want to know what happens so I will be reading the next one to find out. Was is life altering? No. Was it interesting? Yes If you are going to read this story just be prepared to have a lot of questions.
Our story begins with leading male Blaze being hunted by demons. You see these demons have it in their darkness clouded minds that he’s their long lost prince. He has to keep as much distance between him and the demons to survive. That’s where Asha comes in. She’s an experienced former demon hunter. Yet, she isn’t without her own personal set of drama when she internally argues with herself about why she is helping him. It goes against her moral and professional code. She’s struggling with helping Blaze and be dutiful to her former profession. As they continue to fight for his survival, sparks begin to fly. You can only imagine the additional tension that brings to the battle field.
In thinking about the characters, I really think Asha overshadowed Blaze a little bit more than I would have wanted. He is the main focus of the story as the plot lines are following his demonic royalty issues. Asha’s strong will and internal moral battles seem to trump his demonic drama. The balance was a little off for me and that is the only reason why this review is marked at a 4.5 stars instead of 5 because I honestly really enjoyed this book.
I thought going into Prophecy without reading the prequel novella would make reading this book a little harder to follow than normal because the main characters are introduced in the novella. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ellis has made it so you don’t necessarily need to read the prequel to understand the characters story. Her guiding hands lead you in the right direction with her character and world building to the point that you won’t feel lost reading Prophecy before Broken Angel. Ellis’ fantasy world is very enthralling and when you turn that last page you will instantly want to know what happens next.
I'd bookmarked the Blood Moon trilogy some time ago to read, and had read a sample, thinking it sounded intriguing. Then I got distracted for a while with about 100 other books in my TBR pile.
I went back to Prophecy having first indulged myself with the prequel Broken Angel, which is for some reason best known to the publishing world not being re-released separately but is still in a good value e-boxed set called Possession. I do think that reading Broken Angel helped set the scene firmly in my head; it's not absolutely necessary to have read it first but it might add to your overall enjoyment of the following three books. So I'm basically saying go ahead and treat yourself to that first!
Blaze, our hero, is desperate to stay away from the demons who are hell-bent on claiming him as their prince, and from the other side whose reason for being is to eliminate demons without mercy. Caught in the middle Blaze is helped by Asha, a demon hunter who appears to have taken his side. Matters are further complicated by the intense physical attraction the pair feel for each other.
I enjoy the fantasy genre, but I am picky. If the words don't build an accurate picture in my mind of the setting the characters inhabit I get frustrated and feel let down. Prophecy doesn't disappoint; the combined use of language and description makes the world around Blaze and Asha vividly real in my imagination.
The highest praise I can give this is to tell you that I actually yelled out loud in frustration when I turned to the last page and was desperate to know what happens next.
It doesn't hurt to mention that the cover art is simply beautiful.
In the interests of total honesty I did receive an ARC for this book, but Madelynne Ellis knows that I will be entirely truthful in my reviews. I have no hesitation in recommending you rush out and buy your own copy though.
I did enjoy this book. So, why did I only rate it 3 stars? It felt like a middle book, yes a good action packed, mystery filled, passionate tale but I felt as though I was playing catch up with the story. So much seemed to have happened before that at times I felt a bit confused/lost and the ending is a cliffhanger too.
However I still liked this book; I loved all of the characters, the world (who's more evil the demons or the humans who hunt them?!) and I'm invested enough in our main characters, Blaze and Asha's tale that the next book "The Demon Way" will be added to my wish list...
A new author to me and the start of a new urban fantasy series although there is a prequel novella available but as everything is explained here maybe not essential reading. This book starts quite quickly and pulls the reader in as the hero Blaze is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place! He is being hunted by Demons but also hiding from the Demon hunters working for Talon. Poor Blaze seems destined to become the Demons long prophecised Prince and if that happens all hell will break loose on earth. He is being protected by Asha an experienced Demon hunter who has made bad decisions in her life but of one thing she's certain Blaze needs her! The tension between them is palpable and for Asha old habits are hard to break and with grit , determination and more than a little magic the pair take on a perilous journey that will truly test their strength. I'm a little undecided if I really liked this or not if honest. I found it very easy to read and understand what was going on and yet I didn't really warm to the central characters. Blaze is quite vain and if honest I thought him shallow at times. His obsession with his appearance as he's going through changes meant I wasn't always routing for him as much as I would have liked but I have to admit his cunning and inspired use of hair gel made me laugh out loud. I hasten to add that this is not particularly a humourous read but it is one that explores sexual acts and I was completely surprised by the M/M aspect . If being completely honest that's not my preferred storyline and had I known I might not have read this book. There's no doubt that the heroine Asha is kick ass and saves the hero Blaze on numerous occasions and it's her experience and knowledge that drives the story. It's a shame that Blaze wasn't allowed to step up more and at times I thought he was over shadowed by Asha. Very interesting world building and Talon is without doubt one very messed up guy! What I didn't like was the end as I hate cliffhangers but I'm hoping the author has a cunning plan to turn everything around with the next book and let Blaze finally shine! A three and a half from me
Starting off, I did not read the prequel. Just realized there was one after reading this book. Futhermore, the book is so very unique to me. So very sifi, and some m/m action. Which I'm honestly not a fan of, but it was an amazing read, so we will look over that.
At first, I was so confused on everything. There were a whole bunch of "what the hell is going on". I felt like Blaze. Straight up confused. Honestly, not sure if that is how the author wanted it to be or not. Of course, continuing to read, I started understanding the story. Blaze was a regular orphaned human, living with his grandmother. Then, it changed. All kinds of weird stuff happening. Not knowing what was going on or who the hell he is, he was in some deep shit.
Asha, is a badass demon killer. She is a part of a clan that slays demons. Talon, is her crazy boss. The man is straight weird. But, he is all she knows. She kills for him, lets him sexual abuse her all with the help of this crazy demon ash or whatever the hell it was. (Kind of like true blood on the hbo series True Blood).
When Asha and Blaze meet... its like an instant connection. They want to protect each other. Asha knows what Blaze is but doesn't want to admit it to herself or to Blaze.
When they stumble upon Raven, some of the answers that Blaze needs, he finds. And the unwanted truths Asha tries to deny, come forward. They cannot be together. Asha has killed many demons, and Blaze destiny is to lead said demons.
At the end of the book, Blaze's path comes forward. He must follow it. Because of Blaze being what he is, Asha is very ill. And has to go back, against her will, to her home.
What happens next is a mystery that I cannot wait to read.
Set in a paranormal world with demons, Prophecy is an action packed, thrill ride with intriguing characters and a suspenseful plot.
Asha is one tough, kick ass demon killer who rescues Blade and together they try to stay ahead of the demons and the demon hunters who are both after him. Blade is unsure of what he is and must quickly learn of his past and his destiny. Their attraction to each other burns sizzling hot throughout the story.
I liked that the reader got to know both Asha and Blade’s thoughts as it gave me a better insight into the reasoning behind their actions. Raven and Talon are interesting characters and I hope to see more of them in the next instalment.
I didn’t read the prequel to this book, and I wish that I had. I did follow the story without too much difficulty, but there was a lot of backstory to catch up on and I felt that I was introduced into the middle of the relationship between Asha and Blade.
The story was fast paced and well written, and I was kept entertained and on the edge of my seat throughout. The book ends on a cliff hanger and I am dying to read the next instalment to find out what happens next.
Lacking clothing, family and now his humanity, Blaze finds him self running from not only demons but demon hunters as well. Of course his savior, the gothic sword swinging Asha, is also also none other than a demon hunter. The demons want to claimed him as their prince. The hunters want to destroy him. And against all reason, Asha just wants to protect him.
Man I hate when books just leave you hanging, wanting more!!
This was my first read by Madelynne Ellis. Overall I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was a bit slow, but once it picked up it hit the ground running. There were also times when the writing felt as though sentences had been left out. One example was when discussing the death of Raven's brother. Since I didn't read the 0.5 novella, I have no idea what happened and Blazed didn't explain. Somehow Raven just knew, leaving the reader to assume.
I look forward to reading the next installment! ** I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
Thank you to the author and Netgalley for providing a copy for an honest review.
Prophecy is the first book in the Blood Moon series, however there is a prequel, Broken Angel. It is only available in an anthology called Possession. I had started reading Prophecy without reading Broken Angel and felt like I was starting in the middle of the story. I really recommend reading the prequel first.
Prophecy had a lot of really intriguing elements and I love the demon/ apocalypse idea going on. I did not like the incredibly wimpy hero. Blaze was more concerned about his hair than trying to fight back and test the new powers and changes his body was going through. Sex is a heavy theme in Prophecy, and it is not vanilla so be prepared for some kink.
While I was not impressed with Blaze, I am still intrigued enough by the series as a whole to continue with book two when it releases.
Prophecy is the start of the Blood Moon trilogy where Blaze is a human being attacked by Talon for what he is or at least what they suspect him of becoming. Blaze has no idea what is going on except everything he thought he knew about himself is changing and changing quickly.
Asha has killed demons because of who she is. She is one of Talon's Dolls. Blaze is changing everything she thought she knew to. Matching marks, deceit, lies, and new friends/foes these two are on the run for their lives.
Will they make it through the city? or will someone find Blaze and kill him before he gets his memory back? I really enjoyed this and thankful for having the other two.
4.5 stars Ok where do I start...this book was a hot mess for me. I enjoyed the characters, but at the same time I felt cheated, I felt that it is absolutely necessary that the reader must read the shirt story that introduced the series. I was constantly trying to catch up and understand what is happening. I felt constantly teased with the hints to a m/m and possibly a menage, but not sure if that's even going there. I am addicted and must have the next book, even though I'm sure that will be the same hot mess, but hoping there is a lot more HOT, wink-wink
I'm not really sure what I just read... If you asked me what the plot was, I certainly couldn't tell you the particulars. I know this is an urban fantasty/sci-fi book, I also know there are two main characters, Blaze and Asha, that are running away from evil forces. There was a random smattering of rushed sex scenes as well. The writing was decent but convoluted, so much going on without building up character development or plot lines. I could not relate to Blaze nor Asha, at all. Everything just seemed too rushed for my tastes. Ah well, not my cup of tea.
Thanks Netgalley for a free book to read and review.
Dnf.....the book starts apparently after an epic scene which is a major drawback for me. This is supposed to be part one but I'm already lost. Some of the other reviewers have talked about a prequel and I'm thinking one is needed. After looking though it's not available unless I buy an anthology. So looks like a dnf from a favorite author is it for me.
The writing here seemed fine and I was even interested in the characters. However, there is apparently a prequel that the story makes little sense without having read. Other reviewers said they had no problem, but I wasn't willing to overlook so many unknowns. I miss the days that I could pick up a book that was labeled 'book one' and it would actually be first in its own series and I could trust that I'd be able to read it without having to search out and probably buy other books.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a bit of everything going for it. Characters were likeable, there was a bit of humour, romance and a good grounding for the story to continue. The author didn't keep repeating the same dialog over and over, just got on with the story and I can't wait to get the next instalment.
