Didn't like the art and hated most of the characters. Even what was interesting here I've seen done better in other manga. There was some slight sign of improvement near the end, but I'm not going to be fooled into wasting my time reading more of this series.

Stick with Blue Exorcist.

This has about all the subtlety of a brick flying through your window...

I thought this would be more like some of the other exorcist manga I've read, like Blue Exorcist or D.Gray-man.

It's not. It's nothing like either of those.

For one thing, I can't stand any of the characters, and I mean any of them. There's nothing to their characters other than the cliches that define them. You've got "Weirdo A Who's Secretly In Charge." You've got "Traumatized Ultra-Power MC Destined (against his will) For Greatness." You've got "Ultra-Powerful Overachiever Chick Who Frowns Upon Those Who Don't Work As Hard as She Does." You get the idea. I've seen all these characters before, except there's nothing to them. Nothing particularly likable, nothing that makes them different from other characters other than the fact there's nothing to make them their own characters.

The storytelling itself is stiff and forced. The battle sequences could be good, but need a bit more polish. The artwork is nothing to write home about.

The concept is interesting, but this series falls flat on the execution, especially when it comes to the characters. I was disappointed.

Quick thoughts: Cliche crutches as far as the eye can see. Develop things beyond that and ditch the artificial disagreements and this could get a lot better. I do like the main characters though, and will likely try another volume to see if it tightens up. Call it 2.5 rounded up for potential.

I feel like I've read this type of thing a bunch of times before. Exorcists fight things, prophecies, awkward forced romance, yadda yadda yadda. Battles aren't bad, art can be good sometimes. Not really seeing the main appeal here though.

I've been blasting through volume ones in a bunch of different Manga series as I've finished a few recently and am looking for new ones to try. This was one of the more promising. The buddy cop/rom-com/rival aspect of the paired protagonists sets it apart from Blue Exorcist which I think otherwise is the best "exorcist" Manga I've read.

Rokuro used to be an exorcist until he witnessed the tragedy of the Hinatsuki Dorm. Since then he has tried to turn his attention to anything but exorcism. The only problem is the only thing he is good at is being an exorcist. He runs into Benio (when she falls out of the sky) only to be dragged into the realm of Magano (where the Kegare live) and then has to save Benio before the Kegare kills her. It is then revealed that Benio and Rokuro are the strongest exorcists and since they are around the same age are deemed the Twin Star Exorcists by a prophecy which states that they will give birth to the strongest exorcist.

Another new series that I can't wait to read more of. This has a very interesting premise and I can tell there is a lot bubbling under the surface that is just waiting to come up. The artwork is great and I can't wait to see how the relationship between Benio and Rokuro will develop.

I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

A great, fun first volume introduces this series about exorcists of demon-like creatures called kegare. Kegare are more evil as they are born from the sins of humans. This makes the story a bit more interesting than your typical exorcist manga. All the usual aspects are here, and this will please the exorcist fans, but there are some twists. First, it's got a huge dose of humour making lots of laughs help lighten the more serious tones and the main characters, a 14yo boy and girl, are told they are prophecied to marry and give birth to the foretold prophesied child. Talk about no pressure in a relationship that is off to a very rocky start from the beginning! I really enjoyed this and towards the end we get our first glimpse at what appears to be a major evil character.

An interesting if not awkward concept, but I am LOVING the action scenes! They have a slight Bleach feel to me but Bleach was my first manga so there's probably a good reason for that.

Anyway! There's a little backstory on both our main characters and I get the basic info behind their history, but nothing completely solid yet. I'm hoping that more will be explained as I continue reading.

They are adorable!!!! And scary powerful, and I really want to understand the mask! Looks like a jackal from ancient Egypt or a cat? I'm not sure but I look forward to learning a bit more about her.

I also enjoy that instead of using demons, they go a level lower to kegare. Adds a new dimension. Literally.

I'll admit that I was not expecting much from this, and that I was plesantly surprised.

Rokuro is an exorcist....or, I should say was an exorcist....that stopped being one after a traumatic experience in his life. His friend, Ryogo, feels Rokuro is one of the best, and keeps pestering him to become one again. But, is never quite successful. As with most males, it takes a girl to really bring that spark into his life that makes him want to take it up again. But, there's more to their relationship than just exorcism work as well. Could they be fated to be together? Will their future child be the answer to the prophecy?

This is definitely a prologue volume, and as such a little bit slower than it could be, but it still has a lot of potential. That said, I am officially sick of the tsundere heroine - can't someone just act normally around the hero of a semi-romance manga for once?!

I didn't read the actual book, but the online version. I read ALL the books and it's just too good to put down!!! I then tried watching the anime but it's not good. Read online or something if you're into manga!

Started reading this after someone commented on the anime that the manga is far better.

I'm glad I took that comment seriously, this has been a fun read to say the least.

Fin Bye - bye

I am genuinely amazed that I enjoyed this volume as much as I did! Considering Rokuro is so freaking annoying, I thought I was going to want to punt him immediately, but he's actually pretty funny. I love the myriad of expressions he makes and how he wears his heart on his sleeve. I was equally concerned about Benio, since upon first glance I could tell she was this series "token tsundere love interest," but like Rokuro I grew to like her as well. The expressions she makes are hilarious as well and I adore their interactions together. It's like watching a couple that from a distance you feel as if they shouldn't be together because they're constantly insulting each other, but upon closer inspection you realize that they're a hilariously dysfunctional couple.

The artwork/art style is pretty impressive and the fight sequence are brimming with action and energy. I mentioned Benio and Rokuro's expressions earlier, but I truly love the expressiveness of the characters. Expression is one of the most important aspects of any anime/manga since the sky's the limit and I'm thrilled that the mangaka went out of their way to make the characters as expressive as possible.

This was a great first volume to a series and I highly recommend anyone pick it up if they want a fun, darker shounen action series.

109.

Rokuro once dreamed of becoming the greatest exorcist ever.

Then, he watched his community be massacred by kegare (demons). He was the only survivor. They were his only family.

Now, he dreams of being anything but an exorcist.

Rather than joining in on missions with his new adoptive, exorcist community, Rokuro would prefer to flirt with girls.

When pretty and mysterious Benio shows up, Rokuro is immediately enamored. Then, he discovers she is also an exorcist—with a gift for accessing the kegare realm of Magano. Immediately disinterested.

That is until his best friend is captured by kegare and he needs Benio’s help.

During the rescue mission, the two discover they are quite formidable opponents and that their powers are quite compatible together.

When they return to the commune, they learn that there may just be something magical about this connection….

So, this is a fun, action-packed manga with some cool peers and even cooler monsters. Thus far, I really like the cast of characters and the initial set-up for the plot. I’m looking forward to to reading more!

I’d definitely recommend for anyone who likes their shonen manga but also has a flare for fantasy~

I had a passing interest in this manga a while ago when I saw images of some big-titty tan girl who I think is a villain of some sort and who probably dies after a short while. Something like that. Anyway, I had this on a mental "to read" list for ages, but it looks like it's ending very soon, which means it will be unavailable for free on MangaPlus soon as well, so I'm trying to rush it before next month.

This is basically bog-standard exorcist battle manga fare right now, though at least with a little budding rom-com twist. This volume mostly has minor fights against nameless, generic ghost/demon enemies, but the final pages tease a humanoid foe (that is, something like an Arrancar ripoff). So this will probably get "better" eventually, when it moves into longer arcs. Fingers crossed, at least.

The character design is kinda shite right now, but the action/posing is pretty dynamic. I could see the manga improving in its art as well. Uh, fingers crossed here, too.

I'm still not a big fan of shonen manga, but this one and Demon Slayer have definitely moved the needle for me. I really liked the characters, the pacing was top notch, and the art was super dynamic with some amazing shots. Western graphic novel artists (and I'm talking to those who draw for graphic novels, not monthly comics) really should spend more time studying the panel work in manga because it really is night and day most of the time. Complaints: none of the secondary characters had any development and things could still end up very shonen-y. It didn't really break tropes so much as use them more effectively than some of my other reads this year.

A great start for a series! There was humour in it, as well as fight scenes and depth to the main character. It's not gruesome or too serious, but a fun, light read! I love the fact that it takes place in the real world, with some magical elements to it (e.g.: the talismans and powers people get from them). I've enjoyed it immensely and I can't wait to read the next volume in the series. It is a series I'm willing to purchase (I found it that good!).

The series is more for older kids and beyond, as it may be a bit too scary for young children. I recommend to parents to check out this series to see if they're comfortable letting their kids read it.

This is a great "battle" and "monster" manga. I love the hostile dynamic between the two main characters. They keep saving each other, but all of the pressure they receive from the adults in their life pits them against each other. This is a great choice for fans of Attack on Titan, because these demons are almost as creepy as the titans with engorged, distorted bodies, partial decay, and many legs.

This first volume was good, but nothing I haven't read before. I do like supernatural exorcism manga, though.
In this one we're following two 14-year-olds who are exorcists and are chosen to be married in order to give birth to the prophecy's most powerful exorcist. Not the most interesting premise. I do like the art, though. I'm going to read the next two volumes and see if it piques my interest more.

The art is pretty good, the story line feels kinda generic it reminds me of naruto or seraph of the end, and the whole thing of them needing to get married and have a child right then and there despite them literally being 14 feels rather p3d0philic. but i probably will still read it but ill defiently drop it if anything gross happens like any explicit fan service of them since their children

I watched the anime before picking this up, and I think I will enjoy this series just as much in manga format. If the manga continues like the first volume, it might be even better than the anime (which, most are!)

Overall, it’s hard to tell if I’m gonna love this series yet, but so far it’s interesting. No rules have been defined and that’s where a story flies IMO. The boundaries that are placed on a fantasy story make or break the series.
