DECLAN

I’ve got one shot to prove I’m the right guy to take over the Poplar Springs vet clinic. No screw-ups. No distractions.

Then Shannon Cafferty walks in.

My best friend’s little sister isn’t so little anymore. She’s grown into a whip-smart, sharp-tongued knockout in boots and tight jeans—and she’s impossible to ignore.

She needs help modernizing her operation. I need to win over the ranchers. Strictly business.
Yeah, right.

Every glance sparks. Every touch lingers too long. One kiss was supposed to get her out of my head. Instead, it lit a fuse.

Now she’s all I want. But if I get this wrong, I won’t just lose her—I’ll break the one thing I was never supposed to touch.

SHANNON

The ranch is thriving under my brother’s leadership, and the trail riding program my sister handles is a huge success, but the horse breeding operation I run? It’s struggling. Badly. If I can’t turn things around, I’ll be letting the whole family down.

Enter Declan Morris—my brother’s best friend, and the man I’ve secretly wanted for years.

He offers help I can’t refuse. But being around him is dangerous. Every look pulls me in deeper, every touch threatens to burn through my defenses.

Men don’t choose me. They never have. I’m the safe option. The one they lean on, not the one they fall for.

So when he kisses me, it feels like a cruel kind of hope.

And I refuse to fall for someone who might walk away.

Mary Sue Jackson is the romance pen name created for all those cowboy dreamers! This Montana-based cowgirl is a rancher, and knows what hard work means. But despite being up at dawn and working past dusk, she still finds time for what she really loves... romance! With so many hours spent alone, riding across the seemingly never-ending expanse of grasslands, she has plenty of time to dream of love and the romantic tales of ranch life.

When Mary Sue's not out on the grasslands dreaming up her next story, she's most often spending time with her own personal hunky rancher, her husband. One of Mary Sue's favorite activities is to ride the ranch with her husband in the evening and hold his hand as they watch the sun go down over the prairie.

Shannon Cafferty runs a horse breeding program on the family ranch, and meets her crush Dr Declan Morris, a veterinarian who is on a two-month trial at the one and only vet practice that covers the whole area, when he comes to look at her horse instead of the normal vet she expected. He is hoping to be allowed to take over the practice after its owner finally retires, but she has already tried out quite a few other vets and not found anyone she will allow to take over yet. Shannon is following in her mother’s footsteps with the breeding program, but hasn’t been as successful as her mother was. She is still doing everything as her mother did, insisting on doing everything on paper and following the same methods, which aren’t cutting it with modern competition nearby. The last memory she has of Declan was the kiss she placed on him under the mistletoe, when he was home from college and visiting his best friend, her brother Josh, from which he pulled away in shock murmuring that he had a girlfriend! She has heard he is back in town, but not seen him.

Declan turns up at the ranch to see to Shannon’s beloved horse Belle, which is the last connection to her mother, being her mother’s favourite horse, who is getting old and was accidently impregnated by a stallion who got away from her sister. She was expecting the usual old vet Gertie, to turn up and was a bit surprised when Declan showed up instead. He was completely professional and treated Belle with a lot of caring attention. Declan still finds Shannon attractive and has never forgotten the kiss they shared, but he needs to concentrate on the wonderful chance he has for returning to Poplar Springs and being close to his elderly parents and sister. Especially since his mother is showing worrying signs of memory loss! He knows his vet skills are on par, but Gertie is judging who she wants to take over her practice, by a lot of other criteria as well. He needs his trial to end up being successful and getting involved with Shannon at the moment, may distract him too much from performing at his best! He has concentrated on his work for years to get where he is now, but as his feelings for Shannon increase and they get closer, his attention is split and Gertie finds issues with his work and attention to detail.

When something he says to a woman Shannon hates with a vengeance, ends with Shannon’s plans for her breeding programme being destroyed, he is left with the blame and a certain sense of doom. Their passion has caused him to drop the ball and leaves him absolutely desolate. He can’t fix what has happened in one part of his life, but he may be able to help with another part. He can right the wrong he did to Shannon, but it won’t sort out his career, which he had worked so hard to realise. But it isn’t simply up to him and he will soon realise what power there is in small town communities, especially when they have your back! A sizzling romance, a chance to have a career close to family and friends, a mishap, but then a fight back from unexpected sources, all to bring you a HEA ending and another great read. I can’t wait to read whatever might come next for this series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Communicating Is a Very Important Part of Any Relationship -
Declan’s plan was to hopefully take over from the current vet when she retired, so he was doing everything possible to make it happen. Shannon on the other hand was trying to continue her grandmother and mother’s legacy with the breeding program, but her younger sister made a mistake that could have potentially led to dire consequences. Shannon was happy having Declan deal with the mess her sister caused, as they grew up together, but she also had to deal with her attraction to him.

Declan tried to maintain a professional relationship with Shannon, even though he was intensely attracted to her, as he didn’t think he could balance a relationship and his job. That is until the sparks between Declan and Shannon led to them being unable to keep their hands off each other, but chaos ensued the morning after their night together. Even though Declan and Shannon tried to balance their relationship with work, they still had to deal with a few incidents that created friction between them.

Unfortunately, not long after Declan and Shannon settled into their relationship, her nemesis caused a major problem that nearly cost them their chance at happiness together. Luckily, once Declan and Shannon had been apart for a while, they both realised their part in the incident that led to their argument and did everything possible to get their relationship back on track.

I really enjoyed reading this fantastic, slow build romance story with lots of drama, plenty of passionate moments and a great cast of characters, that came together to ensure each reader had a wonderful reading experience. You will definitely enjoy reading this book just as much as I did and be happy to recommend it to all your friends and family.

So,let me just say I love small town romances and this was no exception. This was my first book from this author and it did not disappoint .
We have Declan, who is trying to buy a business in a small town where he grew up. Enter Shannon, his younger self crush, and his best friend's sister. There is some history between them, I don't want to say anything to spoil the story, but the pinning was and is mutual. First of all I loved their chemistry, when they were working, they were working, you could feel that they care for each other,but.. First sign of trouble those two were like teenagers. Their communication skills were non existent for most part of the book. If it weren't for their families knocking some sense in two of them they would be lost cause. I was glad that by the end of the book they sorted out their differences. I loved small town setting, loved the townspeople. Shannon's siblings were amazing, you could fell their love for her. Our FMC was a bit stuck in her own ways,so glad she managed to adapt to some new ways. It could use a little more smut😂,but overall,a good book.

Unyielding by Mary Sue Jackson
This story follows Declan who has aging parents in the area and he hopes with his degree he can take over the animal vet job from Ruth who's ready to retire. He has seen a handful of others who didn't fit the bill. He gets involved with the neighbors and the animal community.
Shannon has a horse who's aging and is expecting due to her relative leaving the gate open... Declan assures her after several visits that she'll be fine.
They start a relationship, from time he has. He's teaching her about AI and when I first heard that I though artificial intelligence. chuckle here. with the program she can gain more money for the animals as the science i s not wrong. She tells him a bout her plans and takes his suggestions. Then she finds out Becca bought the horse she was going to buy because she had done all the background on that specific horse. Now Declan finds out he's not getting the vet job and he's on the outs with Shannon and the cattlemen don't trust him either.
He needs a miracle to fix it all. He had so much riding on it all...

Very Unyielding for these two! This is about Declan and Shannon. These two are determined to get what they want, regardless of what it takes, even if it means making changes. Shannon has been given an ultimatum by her brother about her program, but she wants to keep it the way her mother and grandmother ran it. Declan intends to purchase the vet clinic from Dr. Ruth, but she is a stickler and wants to make sure her legacy is left in the right hands. Note she is hoot - straight to the point. Unfortunately, something happens that involves Becca, and things are not going their way. Can they both work things out to make it right, especially as all of this is due to not being open with each other?.

This was definitely a fun read. I was pulled in right away and couldn’t stop until I hit the last page. Declan and Shannon had great chemistry, and I love this small town world.

That said, I had some serious déjà vu while reading this one. The storyline felt a little too similar to book two. It had the same kind of miscommunication, same kind of doubt and emotional walls between the characters. It made the plot feel a bit repetitive, which was kind of a bummer.

Even when the stories feel a little familiar, they’re super readable and full of heart. These books were my first Mary Sue Jackson reads. I'd definitely pick up her books again.

Shannon is struggling to make her family horse breeding business pay. Her brother Josh has given her an ultimatum to improve things or he won't fund the purchase of the new mare she wants to buy. Josh's friend, Declan is a vet and has recently moved back to Poplar Springs to try and convince the local vet, Ruth to retire and sell him her practice. Josh also suggests that Declan can help Shannon with modernizing her breeding program. Shannon and Declan shared a kiss years earlier and the mutual chemistry is still there. But they have to overcome some unwelcome behaviour from Becca, who is someone Shannon had trouble with at school.

I was so excited to read Shannon’s story after reading the previous books in this series (this story can totally be read as a stand alone). She seems so independent and sure of herself, yet beneath that tough exterior is a woman who wonders if she can get the job done while keeping her family legacy in tact.

Declan seems to be the perfect complement to Shannon in so many ways, yet he has his own “ghosts” to overcome as he moves forward toward achieving his goals and dreams, hopefully with Shannon at his side.

Declan and Shannon truly complement each other once they get beyond their “baggage and move toward their HEA. I LOVE reading books that are written from the POV of both the female and male characters because you get such a different perspective from each character. This book totally fits the bill for me-LOVED!.

- 3.5 stars - I enjoyed this story and it was a fun contemporary to immerse myself in. My only real gripe was how shocking the main characters were at communicating. I understand that was the main plot line but I feel it occurred one too many times for my taste. Other than that I loved this book and smashed it out in a couple days. The characters were interesting, the storyline was intriguing and I love a good small town romance. Another thing to appreciate is that the author knew what she was talking about, whether from extensive research or personal experience. As someone that works in the equine AI industry it's a breath of fresh air to read a book thats factually accurate. I would definitely recommend this book to others

Thank you to the author for gifting me this ARC

Unyielding was a great story by Mary Sue Jackson. If you're a fan of brother’s best friend romance like me you will love Declan and Shannon's story. Declan has returned to Poplar Springs hoping to buy the local vet practice. Shannon has devoted her life to running the breeding program on her family's ranch. But her brother Josh has given her an. ultimatum, update and modernize the program or use the additional funds on their trail ride business. So when Declam needs help securing the practice, Shannon proposes they work together. They both had feelings for each other years ago so will this be their second chance?

This story had such a lovely vibe and kept me turning pages with a smile. Shannon stood out as a strong and independent woman, but with enough vulnerability to make her easy to connect with. Declan was written with the same care, focused on his dreams but never losing his warmth. Their chemistry was clear from the start, and I enjoyed watching it grow into something passionate and tender. I especially liked the mix of emotional depth and playful banter, it gave the book a nice pace. It felt like a heartwarming romance. Thank you so much to the author and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review

Loved it!

Unyielding is the third book in the Poplar Springs series. This book is another wonderful addition to a series that I have fall in love with from the beginning. The story is about Shannon Cafferty and Declan Morris, with a forbidden/off-limits, small town romance that kicks you in the heart and makes you fall in love and swoon all over the place. Shannon is a spit-fire who knows her own mind but also seems to lose it for Declan. He is out to prove himself but takes a detour for her. Together they are a match that makes you want to move to the country, pull your boots on and kick up some sunshine and romance.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Shannon Cafferty manages the horse breeding operation on her family ranch, but it is not doing well. Declan Morris is her brother's best friend and a local veterinarian. Shannon has had a crush on Declan for as long as she can remember, but she doesn't believe he feels the same way about her. Declan and Shannon end up spending more time together, and their feelings for each other grow stronger. Declan and Shannon both have issues in their pasts. Will they let those issues ruin their future?

Overall, good storyline, relatable characters, and it was nice to visit the characters from previous books.

Book three is another amazing and enjoyable addition to the Poplar Springs series. I was hooked from the start and couldn't stop reading until I finished it. Whilst I was in deep I had the feeling I've read this before. From the start I was having some serious deja Vu going on. Either way it's awesome. I'd read this series over and over again that goes to show how much I enjoyed reading it. Highly recommend and look forward to seeing what's next for Mary Sue Jackson.

Great Series

I've really enjoyed this series and getting to know all the Cafferty's and the people they fall for. I loved Shannon and Declan's story. These two crushed on each other when they were young but never let the other know.. Now that they are older they are brought back together and the feelings grow. Of course they have much to overcome which makes for a captivating read that I read straight through. I was really pulling for these two to get their HEA. A really great read.

Shannon, works with her brother and sister on the family ranch, she's the horse breeder. She's had feelings for Declan for years, now he's back home and trying to buy out the retiring vet's practice.
He's had feelings for Shannon but as he's great friends with her brother, he's kept away.
Shannon needs to slightly modernise her system and Declan needs help getting the ranchers on his side. If they work together can they achieve both?

This is book 3 in Jackson's Poplar Springs series and a great addition to the series but can be read as a standalone. Our main characters are Shannon and Declan. These two have had crushes on each other since they were younger, but something always kept them apart. Now, Declan's back in their small town and the attraction is still there. Plenty of drama to keep them apart but the HEA is beautiful. I so enjoyed this small-town romance read.

Love this series and this family saga. Declan and Shannon have been on the periphery of the other two books, but it is now their turn for a relationship. One that is based on a past and present interface. The characters each have their needs, wants and dreams, but between them, professional and personal combine to present an unexpected situation..but not without upset as Declan's distraction and inattention to details, his indiscretion creates more drama.

Book 3 of Poplar Springs story of Declan and Shannon. OMG this one was a delight, the drama and small town vibes just hit the right note. I was worried about these two when the drama almost lost them everything. I loved how this town stood behind these two in the end and the way this story has a few surprises too. The ending is a hallmark of what true love is all about.

To be close to his parents Declan has recently moved to town and hopes to take over the existing veterinary clinic. What he doesn’t need is any complications even if they come in the form of Shannon, his best friend’s sister who he is finding irresistible.

Shannon is trying to do her part to ensure the success of her family’s ranch however it isn’t going as well as she would like. When one of her horses need medical attention it brings Declan back into her life they both find themselves facing career challenges which doesn’t make things easy.

Declan and Shannon take us on a romantic and emotional journey as they realize that they are much stronger together than apart.

Declan and Shannon’s story has them coming together when her part of the ranch operation, horse breeding, is struggling. He being a vet can help her, and if they both want more why not. And with him being her bro’s bestie it makes it a little hard. The siblings were great and can’t wait to read more of their stories.

This is Declan and Shannon's story. These characters have a lot of conflict to deal with, a forbidden love and someone trying to cause trouble. I enjoyed this story but got frustrated with Declan and Shannon with their lack of communication. It all works out in the end and they go on to their happily ever after.

Unyielding by Mary Sue Jackson is a heartfelt small-town romance about second chances and family loyalty. Declan returns to Poplar Springs to take over the vet clinic, and Shannon is fighting to save her family’s horse breeding business. Their shared history and undeniable chemistry bring depth to the story. While some plot elements felt familiar, the characters’ growth and the cozy ranch setting kept me engaged. Fans of emotional, character-driven romances will enjoy this one.

I really enjoyed Shannon and Declan's story. A small town, slow burn romance that is heartwarming, engaging and full of drama. Shannon and Declan discover many bumps and ups and downs in their relationship and Declan makes a mistake that could ruin all his plans and his relationship with Shannon. I have loved this series and all the characters who make up Poplar Springs. Highly recommended.
