Melody Dartford is broken. After the traumatising events she went through as a teenager, she has not healed. But is it really so? As the reader learns more about the young woman living a seemingly ordinary life in bustling London, suspicions inevitably creep in about something not being right with her in the first place.

Nate Lundie is handsome and successful. His therapy practice is thriving. Even though his marriage has failed, he cannot complain about other spheres of his life. He has enough money to spend on entertainment and comfort. He enjoys his status as a bachelor and being free to choose whom to date. It seems that only good things are waiting for him ahead.

From the outside, Melody is on the mend, and Nate has his life under control.

Until the two meet.

The physical attraction of a dangerous magnitude flares up, threatening to complicate the lives of both. Yet, it feels that both the patient and the therapist don’t care about the risks, so exciting is the chase.

Melody is young and mentally unstable. She has come to Nate seeking professional help. It should automatically place her in the position of a weak one. But as the story progresses, more facets of her personality and past actions appear to draw a completely different picture.

Nate and Melody are deliciously wicked. They are the kind of characters it would have been highly embarrassing to be able to relate to. And you absolutely cannot like them. Still, I couldn’t help but be pulled into the tantalisingly vicious tangle of their relationship, wondering if, in the end, one falls victim to the other’s game.

“Broken Boundaries” by Helen Aitchison made me think about how we, as a society, look at people with mental health issues. It seems that despite having been taught to accept their existence, we are still in the dark about how to interact with them. We assume that if such a person is being treated, they become ‘normal.’ We expect from them the behaviour and way of thinking as we consider ‘adequate.’ In short, we fully trust medicine and science to ‘heal’ them. Alas, just like a giant sequoia cannot be ‘remade’ to fit the size of a ‘regular’ tree, people with mental health issues cannot be ‘reformed’ to see the world the way those without them do.

The author demonstrates a sharp skill in portraying deeply flawed characters in such a way that the reader is forced to try to understand them. Melody follows her inner compass, where the values are set in a haphazard manner. She doesn’t act driven by a conscious wish to harm. Quite the contrary, in the moments of clarity, she shows affection and care for her family and best friend. And Nate’s amorous drive doesn’t make him a monster. A lot of people succumb to lust in different situations and move on. It is the combination of Melody’s altered perception of reality and Nate’s inability to stop her at the very beginning before she developed the obsession that caused a disaster.

Prepare to be pulled into Melody and Nate’s dance, fuelled by passion and obsession, which, with every step, leads both to the edge of an abyss.

I'm really enjoying Helen's psychological books, they are different to her other books and brings a whole new edge to her writing style!

From having therapy myself, I never considered this side of it happening but I suppose there are the odd one that will take advantage of the situation. When I think of Nate, I wonder if its his looks or training that he's using to his favour but its a scary thought. People have therapy for all sorts of reasons but the thing with therapy, is the therapist doesn't know you but gets to see the most vulnerable side of you as you peel back the layers during each session. An infatuation becomes an obsession.

There is suspense when Melody has her way, a career is at stake but she doesn't care, she knows what she wants and will do whatever she can to succeed. I really enjoyed this and liked the wrap up and ending. I also like how protective Matthew is, a doting dad to a unstable individual.

Melody agrees to attend counselling, Nate is who she sees. She is hooked on him & he has an unhealthy interest in her.
Her dad agrees to pay for the sessions as he wants to help her and he feels she needs extra to get her life back to how it was and how she was. As things continue though was this the best idea?
Woah indeed!
Helen has written a dark and intriguing book. We get it from both sides, so you get understanding as they both travel through this story.
Kept me hooked and needing to know what was going to happen next with these 2, 3 or more. As her family was involved too, her flatmate and all their feelings.
So good!!

I was lucky to receive an ARC from Helen to read, and I didn't know what to expect but always love discovering new authors and books, and this was a well written book, that had twists and turns. It starts out quite slow in pace but wow didn't it build, there were so many secrets and turns that I didn't see coming.

The characters were so well written, you would honestly think they were someone you spoke to everyday, but also you wouldn't of thought either had the 'problems' they had, it was dark and twisty with moments shock. That last line really makes you wonder what was said!

Honestly Helen what a fab psychological thriller, I'm so glad to discovered you and can't wait to read more of your books and what other new things you bring out. I would highly recommend this if you love a good twisty psychological thriller.

Having read Somebody's Nobody by this author back in March - and really enjoying it - I was so pleased that Helen asked me to take part in the tour for this, their new release.

I was immediately drawn to the front cover which although quite monochrome, I loved the darkness that was promised here.

The bright contrast of the text relalay make it stand out too.

But, the best thing was the ink blot image.

I remember making paintings like this when I was much, much younger and trying to find picture within the blots. Anyone else??

Obviously, the blots have a much more serious use within the mental health profession and so I knew that I was going to really get sucked into this one.

Anything psychological or any amount of delving into the characters' minds - and I'm totally sold! - I love it!

It was really interesting getting to know our main characters and also to be given a little insight into their nature before we find the pair meet at the therapy sessions.

Given both of their pasts, I'm actually not surprised to see that the professional boundaries are stretched to the limits before being broken down completely as Melody becomes obsessed with Nate and he just can't help himself getting involved.

Having seen this side of therapy (attending sessions with my son years ago), I found it really interesting to see things from the other side.

Some of the motivation for Nate to help his patients (obviously not the overstepping!)

It's such a vulnerable position to be in as you open yourself fully to a virtual stranger and I think it would be easy to form an attachment to them, but this assumes that the therapist is not also unstable.

It's tough to decide whose side you're on....if any!?

I loved the writing style which kept us on edge throughout and had me racing to read on as more and more layers were revealed.

I devoured this in just 3 sittings.

I don't want to call favourites, but I think with my proclivity for the topics explored here, I have to say that I loved this book more than the last - but I know that I'll be looking out for more from this author in the future.

Another great read.

After a troubled past Melody Dartford decides it’s time for her to seek professional help. Lundie Therapy sounds perfect and Melody’s over-protective father, Matthew, was more than happy to pay for her therapy…he’d do literally anything to keep his daughter’s mental health from deteriorating further.

However, an unstable, volatile Melody develops a dangerous obsessive infatuation for her therapist Nate Lundie. As she executes her calculated, carefully laid plans to enthrall Nate unfortunately
feelings of a different nature flourish, that aren’t just unhealthy for Melody, but they also severely compromise Nate’s profession as a therapist.

As boundaries are broken, the truth emerges about both Melody and Nate, that can only end with dangerous consequences.

Broken Boundaries is a gripping psychological thriller about rejection and revenge, that explores the terrifying depths of obsession and mental health.
When Matthew’s precious child Melody is hurt he is determined to get revenge…even if it means taking matters into his own hands.

Helen Aitchison writes in a way that makes it hard for a reader to put down. She skilfully balances pace and depth in her writing, delivering not only a gripping storyline but also some brilliant, complex characters.
Great plot with shocking twists and turns and a serious subject tackled…I highly recommend it.

This was as much unhinged as it was sinister.

The line is blurred when Melody attends Nate's therapy sessions. Nate tries to keep things professional, but Melody has other ideas.

I really didn't like Melody. I couldn't feel sympathy for her, and she was a bit bat sh*t.

I did feel sorry for Nate, though, right up until a bit at the end. Just a wee sentence made me question who he was.

There are a lot of tense and suspenseful scenes in the second half of the book, which I read quicker than the first half. The first half sets the scene and builds up to the consequential fireworks that explode, bringing other characters into the fold.

The book definitely highlights the struggles of mental health and (over exaggeratedly) the effects that it has on people who don't receive the right support.

Waiting times are ridiculous, in fact, and in fiction, and their are people out there who are in need of support that dont have access to it immediately unless you can afford to fund it yourself.

The author takes another really important issue and forms a fast-paced thriller that offers a "will they, won't they" and a dose of Karma you might think is deserving.

all in, and good read, and im thankful to the author for allowing me to read and review it.

As Melody experiences trauma after trauma from a young age, now in her early 20s her friend recommends she attends therapy and after being skeptical at first, after laying eyes on Nate Lundie, Melody doesn’t think it’s such a bad idea anymore. Lines are crossed, boundaries broken and lives changed forever.

I was HOOKED from the very first page of this book. Helen really knows how to hook you in. I love a multiple POV book, it means you get full impact from both sides. This is a gripping physiological thriller that explores rejection and revenge and sheds the light on how terrifying obsessions can be.

I honestly think it was so captivating that there were 3 true main characters and 2 side characters (just my opinion) and each of them had their own issues that contributed on a whole to the entire story. It showed how detrimental untreated MH conditions can be, how easy it can be to abuse power and the depths parents will go for their children.

Helen has truly done her job with this book, incredible writing, captivating, leaves you wanting more, brilliantly portrayed characters, albeit scary at times. I feel like this book has been left open and I’d love to continue this story in the future (would also like to see it as a series)

This psychological thriller touches on a multitude of issues. The topic of mental health is at the forefront but it also delves into family dynamics, friendship, loss, infatuation, divorce and lust, to name a few.

Melody is a complex shattered soul grasping at normalcy but it keeps slipping through her fingers. While grieving the loss of her brother, dealing with the recent divorce of her parents and a recent breakup she is at her tipping point when she agrees to see a therapist.

Enter Nate. A therapist who is twice her age but a sexy guy with piercing blue eyes. In the past he has crossed a morally gray area and succumbed to the temptations of a patient which resulted in his marriage breaking up. Determined to not let that happen again he struggles to control his desires. He's damaged in his own right, searching for love and validation.

Then there's Matt, Melody's dad who is overbearing and totally in her business. There's such a thing as concern for your child but he chooses the line that there's no coming back from.

As the story develops Melody becomes infatuated with Nate to the point where she becomes obsessed, stopping at nothing to make him hers. She is mentally unstable to say the least as she stalks him and goes to great lengths to win him over. Nate knows he can't go down that path or he'll lose his license, but his moral compass is broken.

Having a past career in mental health its clear Helen knows her way around mental illness and how it affects those inflicted. She nails the emotions, the dialogue and the feelings. Melody is not a very likable character but you can't help but feel sorry for her. She's damaged and clearly needs help. Helen takes you deep into her psyche.

The writing is riveting, captivating and down right brilliant. Her analogies are always perfect as you feel fully immersed in the story.

About two-thirds of the way into the book things heat up and she takes you on an adventure you won't want to miss. Be prepared to gasp, sit on the edge of your seat and flip through the pages in record speed.

'Broken boundaries' tells the story of Melody Dartford and her therapist, Nate Lundie, whose lives collide and unfold in a suspense filled plot of drama that keeps the readers intrigue.
This book is full of immersive imagery that guides the reader successfully through the journey of emotions of all the characters.
The darker forces of obsession and passion are expertly woven through as the story evolves. There is hot anticipation for the reader to discover each characters secrets and the progression of the relationship between client and therapist, and whether seduction and temptation will lead to inevitable regret, or even revenge!

The unravelling of both Melody and Nate in their own self destruction, are indeed a stark warning of the dangers of broken boundaries, the power of lust and the potential for hurt and chaos.
This book is a page turner with many unexpected twists and turns that keep the reader on tenterhooks
Excellent read and another wonderful add to my growing collection by Helen Aitchison.

Broken boundaries - Helen Aitchison

I was privileged enough to receive this book by Helen as part of her book tour and it definitely did not disappoint.

This was definitely different to other books of Helen's I've read but once I again I am a huge fan of the different perspectives it really keeps me engaged in the story and seeing it from different angles.

I was really hooked on how the infatuation was built in this story and I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen and what melody was going to do.

I loved how it showed the clear break in the boundaries between professional and client but then the boundaries crossed by the client in Pursuing. It was very interesting.

Really loved the story of melody and how it depicted really well how mental health struggles are a fight for survival and grief affects everyone differently.

I would 100% recommend and can't wait to read more from Helen!

Now, this could be any run of the mill story of one falling for the other, but no. The author chooses to go full Messi, and take you on the most explosive and foreboding sprint you weren’t prepared for.
There are early warning signs, where a few behavioural moments could be brushed under the rug. What starts as recovery and overcoming a dark cloud, rapidly switches into obsession, controlling, manipulation, desire… and while you’re getting used to that, it ramps up again. Before you’re aware, it’s hit levels of denialism, enablers, desperation, regret.
For a psychological thriller, and as someone who has been on the wrong end of some the themes in this book, I can tell you that it’s scarily accurate.
I can’t tell what happens, or how it ends. I can however tell you, that you will see the world through a distorted minds eyes- and that is amazing gift, Helen.

Completely hooked on this story straight away, Melody is such a complex character, very scary too 😳 when Melody meets her new therapist Nate an obsession begins.
Nate seems drawn to Melody but how much of her true self is she showing? Nate seems to be looking for that relationship spark but with Melody he could risk losing everything.
Melody is more than troubled and although her father Matthew seems to not see this I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him, Matthew is so desperate not to lose his daughter.
A twisty dark tale, I loved this book, a must read psychological thriller.

Thank you @helen.aitchison_writes for a copy of this excellent ebook, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What an absorbing read!
Having read several of Helen’s other books, I knew from the blurb that I would enjoy this one. Helen brings characters to life in ways that frequently remind me of my own character traits and flaws … it’s not always a good thing, but it immediately gives me a sense of connection. Indeed, this was true with Broken Boundaries, as I soon found myself empathising with all the main characters. (Hmm, I don’t know what that says about me. :-) )
Flawed characters, hidden baggage, anxiety, impulse, obsession … this book has the lot. And when a client-therapist relationship turns personal, all kinds of consequences are possible.
A fabulous read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

So excited to be asked to take part in the book tour for Helen Aitchison Writes new psychological thriller Broken Boundaries.

The story of two people both with secrets and skeletons in their past, both vulnerable, one is on charge the other must comply but which is which?

Melody - beautiful, young, grieving, vulnerable and manipulative.

Nate- handsome, powerful, rich and arrogant but also craves approval, proof he isn’t out of the game.

You decide who’s side your on.

The author keeps you guessing, when your sure you have it figured out there is a clever curve ball thrown in.

Another amazing read from Helen Aitchison and Write on the Tyne

A story of desire, rejection and ultimately revenge. Melody is a very troubled and vulnerable young woman dealing with several traumatic events in her life, you can't help but empathise with her. Nate Lundie is her therapist with demons of his own. When the two come together it's a recipe for disaster. This book deals with a number of serious issues such as mental health, suicide and grooming. The author deals with this in a sensitive and tactful manner. You kind of know where the story is going, however, three quarters of the way through you are hit with a brilliant twist. The final chapter is sublime and left me hanging and wanting more!

I love the characters that this author brings to life and Melody was such a fascinating character to read in this one. I enjoyed reading this book but I did not see where the plot was going as I was never sure what each character would do next! I love how this author writes with both pace to move things along but also giving a lot of detail to what is happening! Another book I will be recommending to others from this author!

An intriguing thriller, with dual POV, featuring morally grey characters who are, at times, both quite unlikeable! I found myself regularly flip-flopping over which character I sympathised with the most. This book tackles some triggering subjects - mental health, suicide, and obsession. A great book to generate debate over characters!

I read Broken Boundaries because it was recommended to me by a friend with whom I share similar interests, and also, because I like to support local authors.

Unfortunately, I found this book to be one of the most badly written pieces of fiction I have read. Clearly, I am in the minority, as other reviewers appear to have enjoyed it, but it is not something I can recommend.

Broken Boundaries is one of those books that pulls you in from the very first chapter and doesn’t let go. Helen Aitchison has created a cast of characters who are utterly compelling in their flaws; morally grey, messy, and often unhinged, yet completely believable. I found myself torn between shock and sympathy more than once, which is exactly what I love in a story like this.
The pacing is tight, the tension keeps building, and the way the characters’ choices spiral out of control is both unsettling and addictive. It’s not a comfortable read, but that’s the point. It lingers with you afterwards, making you question where the line between right and wrong really lies.

Desire, deception, danger – pure brilliance.
Broken Boundaries delivers everything a psychological thriller should, and then some. Helen masterfully weaves a dark, gripping narrative filled with suspense, drama, and brilliantly unhinged characters. The tension builds effortlessly, leading to a perfectly timed plot twist that I genuinely didn’t see coming.
It was impossible to put down. I found myself devouring it over just a few days, completely hooked by the need to know how it would end. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers that keep you guessing and questioning every motive, this one is an absolute must-read.

5. Stars.

The two main characters, Nate and Melody are brilliant. I love how their characters have come through the page.

Melody is a woman who has a lot of mental health issues. She's jealous, possessive and once you're in her sights, your hers.

Nate, is a therapist. He's who Melody has her sights on. But believe me, he's no angel either.

My feelings on both characters changed throughout the book. The twist was brilliant. I should have seen it coming really, I didn't but it was good. And I loved the ending.

I was worried I wouldn't enjoy this after a bad read in a similar genre but honestly, it was fantastic. I would definitely recommend.
