A magical war is coming to Toronto, and Everett Cossette is at its center. The union of a vampire and a high priestess, Everett’s a living contradiction to his peerage’s rule, vampires and magic do not mix. So why is he tasked with tracking down a grimoire? Why would his peerage contract an alchemist to retrieve such an artifact, and why isn’t his mentor, Toronto’s Archmagus, involved? In Everett’s darkest hour, will a mother’s sacrifice be enough to save him and everyone he loves?
Everett presents as such a cool, calm and in control character. And Linn does a great job of patiently peeling back those layers so we get a full rounded, insecure and damaged MC. I didn't like Everett as a person when I started to reading. He is definitely someone I wouldn't get on with! But the more I read the more I understood and I started to warm to him.
The world is brilliantly written. Giving us just enough lore without bombarding us.
This is a delicious introduction into Linn's world of vampires, witches, magi, and gods dueling across planes, to say nothing of the baby goblin. The hunger for love, both romantic and familial, weaves its way among threads of intrigue to create a grimdark tapestry that leaves the reader wanting more.
