An unlikely alliance earns Henry the ultimate prize...
Captain Henry Guffald is no ordinary sea captain. A member of Nelson’s Tea, he’s been ordered to rescue a comrade captured in Spain. The rescue is Henry’s last chance to prove his loyalty to Admiral Nelson. Not so easy a task when the job entails joining forces with a female pirate. Lady Adele Seaton would no sooner give up the call to rove than marry, contrary to her father’s wishes. When news arrives that her brother has been captured in Spain, Adele quickly develops a plan to rescue him and sets sail to intercept the first royal navy ship she encounters. A brilliant tactician, she doesn’t count on meeting her match in a navy captain bound and determined to outwit her at every turn. Can a pirate be tamed?
Addicted to history and romance, Katherine spent the better part of her childhood roaming the globe as an Army brat. Then while attending college, she was swept off her feet by a military officer. Yes, reader she married him, and they continued traveling the world. Four children, two Labradors and three cats later, Katherine put down roots in the south. Where, at last, she pursued her lifelong passion of creating vivid stories that came calling with abandon. Adventure. Mayhem. Swashbuckling heroes. Her books are pure escapism at heart.

To borrow a phrase from this book - Hounds Blood!! Even though I have been well acquainted with this series, and I almost feel as though I know these characters personally, this story still manged to surpass my (already high) expectations!!
Once again, Ms.Bone has managed to weave together a tale that draws the reader in and keeps them glued to the pages eager to take this journey and see where it ends up. In fact - this story was so good that I was inside reading it the minute I got it without a care of the fact that there was a bonfire happening outside. Yes my friends and fellow readers - I was THAT hooked.
This story can technically be considered a stand alone as this book focuses mainly on Garrick and Mercy, however there is so much backstory from the other books (including loose ends tied up), that I feel it would be a shame to not start at the beginning (with Duke by Day, Rogue by Night). Ms.Bone is one of those rare authors that can take a story (even one with a basis in historical fact) and weave it so that you live it with the characters. I can easily pictures these characters alive during this time and doing exactly what they did in order to help their country. No two characters are alike in this world - and that makes it a refreshing change from some others of the same ilk.
I think one of my favorite things about this series is that these aren't your "average" romance stories. In fact, the action starts almost immediately and keeps you guessing what is going to come next. From traitors on board, to one of the prominent characters facing near certain death, to the two main characters finally admitting their attraction for one another, this story has something for everyone.
Overall, I would recommend not only this story, but all of the stories (and novellas) in the Nelson's Tea series to anyone who enjoys a complex and well developed story carried out in the most superb of ways.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
Katherine Bone is a new author to me. I have only read the 2 other books out in this series. I have seen her name in some anthologies and while searching around Amazon for books to read. With a new author, a book cover is what always grabs my attention first. I ran across one of the books covers from this series and thought it looked interesting so I had to check the whole series out. Book 1 had no sex and 2 and 3 only a little. These aren't super steamy like many of my authors but they still have kept my interest. I do have to say, even though these aren't my usual type of reads, they have been vastly entertaining. I found myself really drawn to the storylines with pirates, espionage and spies.
Henry and Adele were an interesting couple. Poor Henry. Everything he has gone through in the past and then having to deal with Adele who is a pure hellion. Jeez! I didn't know if I really liked her or really hated her. What a crazy relationship these two had. Really good read though.
When Mercy goes to see her brother Eduardo on his ship to say goodbye, someone defies Captán Eduardo, and the ship sails away with Mercy on board. Mercy - Lady Mercedes Vasquez Claremont – is a spy for the English Crown, being half-English, and she cannot sail to France, where the ship is going, because she will be apprehended, and worse. She must return to England because lives depend on her. Garrick, Captain Blade, has retaken his ship from Eduardo. Garrick is also a spy, but he is bent on revenge for what was done to him by the Spaniards. He doesn’t trust Mercy, but now he’s stuck with her. If only he weren’t disfigured and so bitter, but the past cannot be undone. However, Mercy doesn’t see it that way.
THE ROGUE’S SURRENDER is another fabulous tale of adventures and romance, with a brooding pirate and one of the most magnificent heroines I have ever seen. Mercy is plucky, brave, and exceedingly competent at what she does, while never being arrogant; she is the very definition of grace under pressure, and I loved absolutely everything about her. Garrick is all that, but he is far from outgoing; his outgoing and flirtatious self has been banished when he was tortured and lost an eye. Yes, mateys, he is a real pirate! Katherine Bone’s writing is nothing short of spectacular: lush and flowing, filled with humour and sparkling dialogues, and a stunning vocabulary perfectly attuned to the Regency era. THE ROGUE’S SURRENDER is book three in the Nelson’s Tea series, and although references are made as to what happened previously, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Characters from previous books are also involved in the story, and Percy, the Duke of Blendingham, has to be one of the best characters ever created. He has to be experienced to be believed, and I think I could read about him forever; he nearly steals Garrick’s thunder!
Ms. Bone’s characters are so multidimensional, that they felt like real people; there is black and white, and all the shades of grey in between in every one of them. The story is totally absorbing, and becomes even more so as we move along towards the end. When a catastrophic event happened, I think I held my breath several times for as long as I could – as the cliché goes, without realising I was doing so. The descriptions are breathtaking, and Ms. Bone certainly knows her way about ships and swordfights! Katherine Bone is a wizard at worldbuilding, her storytelling skills are immense, and she really builds a glorious romance one single moment at a time! Terrifically entertaining, fabulous heroes and heroines, breathtaking action and a romance to make your heart sing!
Did I miss something? Why did everyone love this book? I found the female protagonist to be exceedingly unlikeable and so out of line with the time period that it was almost insulting. No properly bred woman of that time would ever act like that and this fact does not make her endearing it makes her grating. The book also took forever to get to a point and spent far too long on inconsequential parts (her arrival home, Guffald's arrival to her home, everything with her brothers, and all the rigmarole involving getting married). Also, why did it take so long for Guffald's mission to be made clear to the she-devil? I often confused Garrick with Guffald throughout the book--but maybe that's just me. Overall, it was absolute drivel.
Worst part about reading books when they first come out is waiting for another! I loved the push and pull of the main characters. The only thing insight care for was Adeles naivety considering the things she was doing, but overall a great read!
I really liked this story because I love lady pirates! The tension and degree of intelligence Adele displays make me grin at times. She runs circles around Henry and you wonder if he is going to get the best of her or not. Total 5 stars!
My first time delving into a pirate story, but I enjoyed it. The missing son, the distraught daughter, a family of pirates and A turn of events that makes for a happy ending.
Garrick Seaton has but to look into a mirror to relive those tortuous weeks when a Spanish captain killed a woman and took one of Garrick’s eyes. Even though a year has passed since his rescue, nightmares plague his sleep as well as those waking moments when something triggers a hellish memory. He vowed never to return to Spain. Yet he once again stands in the shadows of San Sebastian’s docks, preferring to die fighting the enemy than allow another woman to die.
Before a rendezvous with her English contact, Mercedes Vasquez Claremont boards her brother’s ship. Eduardo fights for their country, which is now under Napoleon’s control, and has orders to sail to Calais. Although she fears he may not return, she’s been too long a spy and is curious about his mission. While Eduardo goes topside to find out why his vessel is no longer docked, her search of his cabin uncovers a letter from Admiral Roche: Eduardo is to meet the Frenchman off the coast of France.
Once Garrick retakes his ship, he confronts Mercy and reveals that an assassin awaited her at the rendezvous. Shocked to learn of the betrayal, she is equally disturbed by Garrick’s failure to produce her brother and the realization that her disappearance from San Sebastian could endanger her parents. Since she carries needed evidence to prove the innocence of a high-ranking English lord, Garrick realizes it’s paramount that he gets her safely to England.
But Garrick and Mercy have been spies long enough to know nothing ever goes as planned. A French warship pursues them. A traitor is among them. And Mercy’s discovery of a hidden cargo endangers them from without and within.
The third title in the Nelson’s Tea series, The Rogue’s Surrender takes place in 1806. This clandestine society continues to fight against Napoleon even though its founder, Admiral Horatio Nelson, is dead. Overall, I enjoyed this story, but I also have some reservations. After the French warship fires on Garrick’s ship, the chapter ends and the next one begins eight days later; this leaves the reader wondering what happened. When all the members of Nelson’s Tea gather to plan the demise of their enemies, the point of view becomes lost and there are so many names, it’s difficult to keep track of who’s who. During the scene where the plan is put into effect, a secondary character overshadows the hero and heroine. This lessens the tension, making the scene less exciting and dramatic. There’s also a tad too much repetition of important plot points from previous tales, which sometimes intrude into the flow of this story.
In spite of these flaws, The Rogue’s Surrender is a sweet romance with characters who must vanquish visible and emotional scars to find love. I chuckled throughout the scene where Garrick gives an order, which Mercy misconstrues, and his men take advantage of that misunderstanding. I also liked how Mercy subtly gets Garrick to face his past.
Pirates! Romance! Classic historical romance with punch!
Captain Henry Guffald is a man on a mission. Under orders that will make or break his career, Henry knows that if he fails it is more than his career or his reputation on the line - it’s a man’s life. Suddenly waylaid by a female pirate who insists on being taken seriously and attempts to outwit him, he has no choice but to play the game set down by her father, Earl Pendrim, if he is to save his compatriot’s life.
Adele Seaton tends to act before she thinks and when her father and brothers don’t make a move to save her brother, Garrick, from the Spanish hangman’s noose, she intends to do it herself. She attacks a British ship, she attempts to capture it to use to rescue her brother but soon finds herself the captive and compromised in a way that humiliates her. The result, although not one she would prefer, soon becomes one she desires.
THE ROGUE’S PRIZE by Katherine Bone is a historical romance written with the classic feel of days gone by but with a strong, gutsy, and fiery heroine. A captivating tale of a couple entangled in a battle of wills - Adele Seaton, a young woman struggling against the restraints of society, and Henry Guffald, a man battling the guilt of having nearly failed a past love that now has his career hanging in the balance.
We first meet Henry Guffald in book one of the Nelson's Tea Trilogy, DUKE BY DAY, ROGUE BY NIGHT by Katherine Bone but don't worry if you haven't read that one, you'll still enjoy THE ROGUE'S PRIZE. It works well as a stand alone.
I highly recommend THE ROGUE’S PRIZE by Katherine Bone to any, and all, readers who love a historical romance set on the high seas, pirates, and adventure that throws everyone into danger while keeping you turning the pages late into the night.

This is the second book in The Nelson’s Tea series. I did read the first book, and I enjoyed it. This book is easily read on its own.
Captain Henry Guffald meets his match in Lady Adele Seaton. Both have something to prove and will stop at nothing to accomplish their goal. Lady Adele masterfully takes control of Captain Guffald’s ship. That happens fairly early in the story and it goes downhill from there. The characters are unrealistic and poorly developed. Lady Adele “the pirate” turns into a spoiled brat. She throws tantrums and has to be locked in her room by her father. I just kept thinking “how old is she supposed to be”. It just killed the whole image of her character being independent and fearless. I think the author just went too far in an attempt to show that Adele was feisty and had a temper. I liked Henry’s character in the previous book. I felt sorry for him, and I had high hopes for him in this book. His character seemed bitter and never seemed to find happiness in this book. I never felt vested in any of the characters, and I never bought into them being a coupe. There was no real chemistry between the two of them.
The storyline has a few bright spots but ends up being bogged down with details and very little action. I felt like there were details that left you hanging. The author never really clarified that Adele and Henry were after the same goal. So there was no point where they came together and decided to work together to free Adele’s brother. It just all sort of happened at the end of the book and then the story was basically over.
It was a struggle to stay engaged in the story, and I hope the next book is better.
Witty, humorous, there were bits that had me in fits LOL;) Amazing at the same time a VERY Infuriating female!! Highly recommended to check this one out!!
But Bone needs to work more on the chemistry element between the H&H ..one flaw I noted in both book 1 and 2 and wouldn't mind a bit more steam there..
My Captain Henry:
Well the She-Pirate reminded me of ..
The part where Henry duped Adele by doing exactly what she demanded was ....
and when she double duped and shocked him (as he left her shackled in the nude in his cabin)
Needing a perfect escape from day to day stuff I will turn to historical from time to time. It has to have something to keep me hooked to it grabbing my attention right away. The molds women were put in had them being what would seem fluff or just plain suzy homemakers but the romance could be so sweet and gallant. I like dashing and daring also so when I opened this novel this author had the right stuff. She roped me to the ship for a wild ride for a adventure I had been looking for. I become so engrossed right away because this lady is one I had to get to know more because she has daring and gumption. Adele is on a mission that must succeed so to do that she has to become a pirate. Henry is also on a mission but little does he know what he has signed on for will change the course of his path and his ship for a adventure of the utmost. The story is one that will have you quickly turning the pages because the interaction between these two is full of wit plus more. In order to succeed they most come together which is one of the fun parts in this novel. The romance is also another that is raw and inciting. The adventure is thrilling that will plenty of action. Your heart will go out to the brother wanting success to be obtained. The characters are so rich and full of life you that almost at times that you let time get away from you. This is also refreshing for a change the heroine is one not to be messed with and can go toe to toe with her man. I love the way it is wrapped up with the reader getting to see what the real prize is. received a arc for a honest review.
Adele “Captain Belle” Seaton is 19 and the only daughter in an ocean of sons of the Earl of Pendrim. She yearns for her father’s approval and that desire lands her in hot water frequently. She is beautiful, headstrong, good with a sword and NOT interested in any of the “womanly pursuits” of her peers. She wants adventure, freedom, and a challenge in her life and any marriage. Captain Henry Guffald is on a mission to retrieve his best friend from a Spanish Pirate. He has things in his past that have left him determined NOT to fail and to prove himself to his superiors. His past has left a defiant bad taste in his mouth where pirates are concerned. They meet while both attempting to accomplish the same goal – rescue Garrick Seaton (her brother-his best friend). However, pride, arrogance, distrust and blinding determination on both their parts-leads to total chaos, shacklings, humiliations, ruination, escapes and scuttling a fabulous ship. There is an underlying attraction between them that eventually blooms and they stop fighting each other and work together. I enjoyed the interactions Adele has with her brothers and they had me chuckling and grinning. The voyage to their HEA was interesting and the secondary characters were wonderful. I think poor first mate Winters deserves a promotion at the very least…his own HEA- several years down the road even. This is the second in the Nelson’s Tea series and I am looking forward to the next installment. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The very best books should never be read in one day alone. Even though it HURTS to tear yourself away from the story, the delicious knowledge that you can go back to the world Katherine Bone has built makes the pain well worth taking your time.
For sure this is a romance, but far from the typical damsel in distress meets handsome stranger. The first infatuation we are treated to is between a man and his grossly disfigured ship. We are later treated to a budding romance between a woman and the sea. Throughout this book the dualities run deep.
Well researched including fabulous language and phrasing of the day, there are also word creations purly Katherine Bone. "The sea spread out before him like a wanton woman's legs." "Spies are like bobbing fish..."
While the mood can often be dark and dangerous, befitting the times, this series is a delight to read. You want to become fully immersed and escape into the era, understanding you can step back and enjoy modern conveniences such as fresh water and indoor plumbing.
While you can be enthralled with this novel as a wickedly dangerous stand alone escape, don't deny yourself the pleasure and emotional thrill of reading this series beginning to end. It will make you understand and appreciate any other books set in this period all the better. The dangerous liasons and fugatious relationships alone make for fascinating reading. If you also have a love for history, Kathering Bone is the author to follow.
I did receive a copy of the book to devour and review with my own opinions.
I received this book as a ARC for a honest review! I will try not to post any spoilers in my review but it can happen!
Now, if your looking for a fast paced, female pirate who wins some loses some, this is the book for you. You will never know if she is going to pull a sword or throw her fist at the lead but man what a great read! It has great details along with twists you least expect and just when you figure it out it turns again. Her detail for the realistic details of that time frame are on the money!
What a great read! I could not put it down till I finished it. This book also reminded me how much I loved pirates be they males or females! A Must read for a relaxing time!!!

The Rogue's Prize was one of those novels that captivates its reader from the very beginning, and keeps you glued to the pages in order to find out what happens next. It has everything you could possibly want in a good novel; there is romance, adventure, soldiers, spies and did I mention pirates? Each of the characters is fell developed, and motivated for their own needs and goals. The two main characters, Lady Adele and Captain Guffald are both working towards the same goal - although for two similar (and yet very different reasons. Both wish to gain the approval of another, and both wish to prove that they are more than anyone thought they could be, but the trials and setbacks they go through in order to achieve those goals are what makes this story so unique and captivating.
Much of this novel read (for me) as though it was a script for a movie. Ms.Bone has a way with words that allows the reader to easily "see" the scenes unfold before them as they read them; and it is this gift with words that allows me to do more than read about a strong man clamping a blade between his teeth and diving off a ship, I can actually visualize said man and his dive into an unforgiving sea.
I would highly recommend this novel to those who enjoy a good romantic adventure.

Garrick must return to Spain. He wants to never have to return to the scene of where his greatest torture occurred. Reluctantly he agrees to return to save a senorita that will save someone very important to Nelson’s Tea. Mercy doesn’t expect to be kidnapped by the infamous Captain Blade. Though she feels kidnapped, Garrick sees it as saving her life. He continues to save her life and she will return her appreciation by saving more than one of Nelson’s Tea and using herself to try to capture an enemy to England. Can Garrick and Mercy save England and their love for each other or will Napoleon and his revolution win?
This was a very exciting read. Mercy and Garrick’s push and pull between each other was both intriguing and fun to be a part of. I was captivated by the blend of intrigue and piracy. That is truly what this story is about. The romance between Mercy and Gerrick was sweet and not as important, but none the less you will want your own pirate by the end of the book. This is not your typical regency romance. Though there are stolen kisses and moments there isn’t a lot of bodice ripping action you look for in a novel such as this. There is quite a bit of action and suspense to make up for the lack of romance. Overall, though this wasn’t a typical regency romance it was still very entertaining and fun to read.
SHIVER ME TIMBERS! IT BE A LADY, A ROGUE, AND A PIRATE! And that's just the heroine. The hero - a traitor, a cripple, a double agent in love with another man's wife. And a supporting cast of gentle ladies, lords, ships, evil villians, and assorted ship's crews. The main characters are carefully drawn, with major detail given to coloring them completely - but not without independence. It is as if, after finding the coloring book, Ms Bone first selects a unique set of colors, and then, somehow, changes some of the lines to better suit her story. This story is beautifully told, with some delicate conversations, some humorous notes, and a few down right horrifying bits. But in the end - who - or what - is "the rogue's prize?" Turns out to be a "take your pick" situation. Another winning, entertaining addition to the romantic library.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review: I was a bit confused by this book. I found the female protagonist to be very unlikeable, juvenile, and annoying (maybe that was the point?) and completely at odds with the time period. No properly bred woman of that time would ever behave the way she did. It was also a little long winded for my liking and I felt that it didn't add anything new to the story. And I LOVE long books. I read Diana Gabaldon. And the names: they were too similar, making me always confuse Garrick with Guffald throughout the book. Although there was some action on board the pirate ship the rest of it was just dull. It didn't have enough intrigue or suspense to hold my attention. I may be in the minority here but I won't be reading any more of the series. No thanks.
This was an awesome addition to the Nelson Tea series! I found myself wondering what would happen to Henry after the first book and his story was far from disappointing. He is out to seek redemption from his wayward ways and finds himself in a new dillema. He finds himself enthralled by Lady Adele and gets a bit more than he bargained for. Only Katherine could entwine Garrick, Adele and Henry the way she did. Just when you think things will settle down, something pops up! Thankfully the great Husan has everyone's back;). It is a page turning gripping adventure on the high seas! I received a copy of his book from the author in return for my honest and fair opinion. The thoughts above are mine and mine alone.
Another great adventure from Katherine Bone. She creates strong characters and gives them a great adventure with mystery and suspense all in a well written story. Captain Henry Guffald must redeem himself after his last failure if he is to remain part of Nelson's Tea. To do so he must rescue a fellow member in Spain. Lady Adele Seaton, aka Captain "Belle" Pirate, has her own secret mission she is on. The two captains will clash, in more ways than one, sword fights and mayhem will ensue!! This book is wonderful, you won't be able to put it down! I am so thrilled to discover this author and her wonderful style in writing pirate stories.
What an amazing read, especially after finishing up my finals. This book was captivating and I really wanted to step into Captain Belle's shoes. Weather she was Captain Belle or Lady Adele , she was fierce, though a bit naive at times. Her attraction to the Captain, a.k.a Henry is slow at first and they start out hating each other, but man is it fun to read about. Spoiler: My favorite part may have been when she took care of him after he took watch without rest and little to eat. It was such a caring moment. I loved it! You all must read this book if you like strong willed girls who fight for themselves and can hold their own. Girl power :) I hope the next book is about Garrick.
Enjoyable enough in places but a very average pirate romance. It was a little long winded for my liking and I felt that it didn't add anything new to this tired genre. Although there was some action on board the pirate ship the rest of it was just dull. It didn't have enough intrigue or suspense to hold my attention. I found the female character quite juvenile and annoying and I wasn't that bothered about the rescue of her brother and the interactions with the rest of her family. I may be in the minority here but I won't be reading any more of the series.
Copy of the book received in exchange for a review.
Strong female lead in this action adventure on the high seas. Adele, aka Captain Belle is out to save her brother and prove to her father that she can captain her own ship. Captain Henry is a navy captain and a strong hero for her. I really liked Adele until her foolishness at the rescue scene. I was angry enough to almost through the book. Both Adele and Henry are trying to rescue her brother who has been captured by a spanish pirate and is being tortured.

And a beautiful spy, a swashbuckling but damaged hero, and villains most foul. These are all standard Katherine Bone fare, so it is no surprise to find them here. Nor is it a surprise to find myself swept away, out of my living room to Spain, the seas, and then Regency England. The author's skill is not just to take us away, but also to create the drama, let the reader feel the terror and sorrow as the characters move through their lives. The episodes that make up this book tie nicely with the previous Nelson's Tea novels, but I think it would be okay go read this one alone too.
4.5 stars! I loved this book. Plenty of intrigue, danger, and twists that the story moved along quickly for the most part. The history lesson at the beginning I assessed took away from getting right into the story. Since there is something similar at the end, I would have just left it at the end as the end was when I was ready to hear about the history surrounding the story. Between that and some long, drawn out conversation over a dinner that dragged, I enjoyed the overall story line.
The author developed the main characters sufficiently to have me care what happened to them. I particularly loved the self doubts of the formerly handsome lord. Well done.
A man living with the effects torture left on him and the only one capable of saving a fellow spy, who has been marked for death.
To be honest, I think I would have enjoyed this one more if I'd read the books that came before it. (At the time of this review, I've only read 0.5 of the series.) I feel like it's assumed I would already know these characters, and so I didn't have a connection to them. The pirate aspects are enjoyable, and the plot is well researched.
I wanted to like this more. Spies in the time period I love so much?
I would recommend readers start at the beginning, and they will probably enjoy it. I was provided with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
If you love pirates you'll love The Rogue's Prize! When Captain Henry is sent to help release a man taken prisoner he is waylaid by pirates. He's surprised when the Captain of the pirates is not only a woman but the sister, Adele, of the man he's going to rescue. A game of cat and mouse is played back and forth until due to speaking before thinking the two are forced to marry. In the journey to their mission they become husband and wife in more than name and Henry admits his feelings when he is forced to rescue Adele as their mission goes awry. You won't be able to put this story down.
A wonderfully told pirate adventure. Adele is a young wilful daughter to an Earl. She is impulsive and passionate. These qualities make for some dramatic adventures and riveting reading. Adele sets off to save her brother Garrick and doesn't count on Captain Henry Guffald's experience determination and devastatingly handsome person. I enjoyed the sparring and chemistry between Henry and Adele and their deep love for each other. Garrick's rescue was thrilling. A great read overall.
#2 in the Nelson's Tea" series, but can be read as a stand alone. An absolute delight! A female pirate, and Captain in need of redeeming himself. Fast paced, adventure filled tale, with well developed characters and a unique storyline. Fans of sea adventure, pirates and romance are in for a treat. Much loved!
