The troubled middle child returns home just in time for danger—and a hot werewolf bodyguard?
Aspen ran away from Starbrook after college and never looked back. That all changes when a series of events brings her back to her family home... but it can't be that easy.
Their family tavern is under attack, and the only one who can help is a mysterious werewolf in charge of the tavern's security. Mac is a wanderer at heart, blowing through Starbrook without a care—or so it seems, until he reveals the secrets of their late mother's death.
In any other circumstance, he would be catnip to Aspen. A brooding bad boy with tattoos? Sign her right up. But Mac has secrets of his own that have him pushing her away, despite their blossoming, magical bond.
The second Hawthorne sister's story is one of corrupt witches, fated mates, and true love that conquers all.
this book is the embodiment of fall. a perfect mix of gilmore girls and practical magic vibes 🖤
i absolutely adore everything about this series so far. ‘spellbound & speechless’ is the second book after ‘bewitched & bewildered.’ this one follows aspen hawthorne, who we heard about, but didn’t meet in the first book!
the magic and the action in this book had me so glued to the pages, i didn’t want to put it down! don’t even get me started on the romance, their connection was instant even if they both denied it at first. mac and aspen are so perfect and i love them both so much.
for every bit of mac’s grumpiness, aspen is bubbly and brought out a playfulness in him that i adored so much. who knew a werewolf and a witch would be the perfect match?🤭
the found family in the first two books alone had me laughing, crying and giggling with joy. they all love each other so much and it’s one of my favorite things about the story.
thank you so much Elle for the arc, i can’t wait for more from this family!🖤
I am thrilled to have been given an ARC of this book. I adored Bewitched & Bewildered and definitely wanted more Starbrook and more of the Hawthorne sisters.
While this one definitely continues some storylines from B&B, it also works as a stand-alone. I don’t know why anyone would want to just read this one and not read B&B too. But it could be done without feeling like you missed a whole book’s worth of plot.
One of the things that I enjoy the most about all of Elle Lavendelle’s writing is how well she builds tension between the main characters. My favorite part of any romance book or romcom is that period of time where the leads are orbiting each other and being stubborn about their feelings. You know, the part where your brain is screaming, “stop being a pair of dumb dinguses and kiss already.”
That tension between Mac and Aspen is so wonderfully, delightfully frustrating. Which makes the moment they stop being dumb dinguses all the more satisfying.
I think that any story Elle gives us from Starbrook is going to be a fun and sexy read with some cozy vibes. Adding the different type of suspense and bigger element of danger worked well from both an entertainment standpoint and for this series as a whole.
I am definitely looking forward to getting to know the Hawthorne sisters better and spend more time in Starbrook in future books.
having read bewitched and bewildered, i have been absolutely intrigued to read more about the Hawthrone sisters and their different personalities!
book 2 let's us meet Aspen, the middle sister, and i just love her growth throughout the entire book!!! and Mac!!! is just UGH 😫🔥
as a big big lover of shifter books, this was just 😍😍😍😍😍😍
i love how this book continues on where we left off from Juniper and Ozan's story, but at the same time can still be read as a standalone. but the ending??? I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AAAAAAAAAA
Witches…..werewolfs….fated mates say less! Gilmore girls meets practical magic and charmed in this perfect for fall book! This is the second book in its series and was the PERFECT continuation of the first book. This grumpy x sunshine book was packed with magic and action and I didn’t want to put the book down at all! The cozy vibes were absolutely perfect and was a much needed book for the fall. It’s a perfect October read!
I was given an arc for this book and i thought it would be the perfect book for fall and it was exactly what i pictured to read during fall it was a cozy romance with a bit of angst and spice of course the fmc aspen was such a baddie and i loved her so much she’s really cool and mac was a sweetheart as well
I thought I loved the first book but wow, this one is my favorite. Fated mates, witch x demon, hea, set up for the next book, spicyyy, finding yourself and following your heart. I will definitely be buying!
The characters are all so well written that you can pictures each one of them. It's set at the best time of year, and is the perfect mix of spice and story. Aspen and Mac are goals 😍
Y'all, I thought I loved the first book in this series but this one really took the cake! I loved having more action scenes in this story while still honoring the absolute cozy and romantic vibes between the two main characters. I love this family of sisters and my heart is so happy for Mac and his newly found family. It was also so wonderful to get to keep following along with Oz & Juni's relationship from the first book. And the epilogue?? I'm on the edge of my seat for the third book and this one hasn't even officially come out yet!!
I devoured this book in a single day—I absolutely loved it! It’s a cozy, quick read with low stakes, making it the perfect comfort read. The sisterly relationship was one of my favorite parts—their unwavering support for each other added so much heart to the story. Pick this up if you love: small-town vibes, forced proximity, reluctant fated mates, and a broody, protective werewolf.
Well when wolves and witches are involved you have my. Attention in the first paragraph omg the story is wonderful while not reading it I was thinking about what happens next drove me crazy until I read more now I have to read the next one it was a pleasure to read this before it is released I will be buying the paperback for my library
I was given an ARC for this one, and I devoured it in 2 days!
It's giving Charmed, with one of the sisters falling for sexy, growly werewolf.
🖤 Witchy 🖤 Wolfy 🐺 🖤 Fated 🖤 Small-town 🖤 Primal
She thought coming home would be hell. Turns out hell comes with a broody werewolf and a fated mate bond she never ordered, but damn if it doesn’t sizzle!
Spellbound & Speechless is giving cozy witchy Fall-in-New-England vibes perfect for a soft transition to spooky season. Aspen, a love witch, has kind of accidentally estranged herself from her sisters. But after her career aspirations in the city don’t pan out, she finds herself begrudgingly back in her small hometown, Starbrook (Stars Hollow, that you?) Mac, a lone wolf, has been obsessively hunting an evil witch who’s responsible for his father’s death. He and Aspen have a meet-cute at the local motel where she’s hiding out from her sisters and he’s hunkering down for his fight. He immediately knows there’s something different about her, even if he tries to repress his inner wolf monologue. Aspen and Mac adorably and oh so awkwardly try to deny growing feelings and fate, leading to a “just once” moment aka famous last words.
This was sweet, especially the relationships among the sisters, and it has the makings of a really cute series as we focus on each of the different Hawthorne ladies (this was book 2 though they can be read as standalones). Thank you to the author for an ARC!
This was my first book by Elle Lavendelle and I have to say that I'm now a fan!
Spellbound & Speechless is a cozy read that still had some spice to it. Mac, the MMC, is a grumpy, pack-less werewolf with a possessive streak. Aspen, the FMC, is a sunshine-filled fashion designer and love witch. Add in a coven of quirky sisters that own a small-town tavern and a Big Bad (I won't spoil), and you get a fun, fast-paced story that will keep you reading on. Tropes featured include fated mates (he knows immediately, she doesn't), breeding k!nk (no preg), "it'll fit"/"good girl." Also a new one for me - sex magic (!!).
I am grateful for receiving this ARC and am now looking forward to reading more from this author (and hope to see Mac and Aspen again!).
📖summary: Aspen Hawthorne never thought she’d come crawling back to Starbrook, but after New York’s fashion world leaves her hope and dreams in ruins, home is the only place left. The last thing she wants is to get tangled up in small-town gossip—or her sisters’ schemes—but when you’re a love witch devoted to Aphrodite, trouble (and romance) has a way of finding you. Especially when a brooding werewolf with stormy eyes keeps showing up at her side. Mackenzie “Mac” Roth came to Starbrook for one reason: to hunt the corrupt witch who murdered his father. But the moment he scents Aspen, his wolf knows she’s his fated mate. She’s light to his darkness, warmth to his cold edges, and the one distraction he cannot afford. Protecting her means risking his mission. Resisting her might destroy him. With the threat of the corrupt witch, the two get entangled further when Mac steps up to guard Aspen and her sisters—even if he finds himself focusing solely on the love witch. But before love can truly take root, Aspen and Mac must face the corrupt witch whose dark power threatens the Hawthorne family’s grimoire—and the fragile future they might share. With love spells, wolf instincts, and destiny itself tangled together, Aspen and Mac must decide: embrace the bond that could save them both—or let it wither before it ever has the chance to bloom.
🏍️my thoughts: This book howled with cozy, paranormal energy from start to finish! The dual POV drew me in instantly, letting me sink into both sides of the bond. Elle enchanted me with her words—honestly, it felt like she cast a love spell on me, the same way Aspen and Mac bewitched each other. I’m an absolute sucker for fated mates (throwback to my Wattpad era), and the tender misunderstanding between them—each convinced the other couldn’t possibly want them—made their connection even more delicious. I adored the queer representation, though I do wish it had burned a little brighter in the story. The magic system was a treat, especially how the witches draw on gods: Aspen whispering to Aphrodite for divination, and her sister’s boyfriend looking to Hecate. As someone who grew up devouring Percy Jackson and The Witches of East End, and who’s been steeped in WitchTok for years, Spellbound & Speechless scratched every witchy, nostalgic itch. And oh, the smut. The moonlit heat between Aspen and Mac was feral and intoxicating. While some moments felt a touch out of character, I couldn’t help but love how needy, whiny, and utterly undone Mac became for Aspen—it was raw, primal, and perfect for a story steeped in magic and fate.
I really enjoyed this book, but it didn’t quite hit five stars for me. The pacing felt rushed, and the cursed witch never came across as truly threatening. I also wish Mac and Aspen’s love of travel had been honored more—settling permanently in Starbrook felt like a missed opportunity. Still a fun, cozy paranormal romance, but with a few missed chances to go deeper - including a knot 🥲.
I would definitely recommend adding this to your full TBR! 🍂
Aspen has returned back to her hometown after running away from her family to pursue her dreams. Unbeknownst to them, she's lost her footing in her industry, and has been floating around without employment for the last year. Returning to town is less than ideal though, as corruption has taken a foothold, and a new handsome wolf shifter is distracting her every moment.
*****
This was such a cute and cozy read. This is the first I've read in this series, although it is the second book. It definitely can be read as a standalone, but I'd still recommend reading the first book to avoid spoilers.
I really enjoyed the character development of both leads, and how they fought against their bond and made excuses for the feelings constantly tugging them together. This honestly would have been a four or five star read if it weren't for the underdeveloped conflict.
For the conflict, we have a corrupt witch that kind of comes out of the blue, decides to attack in really weird moments (often surrounded by tons of magically-inclined people, or in the witches own home) and it had me baffled. The corrupt are supposed to be horrible witches who steal power from others and yet people kind of just let her get her individual attacks in and then she disappears without real mention where she went. Even when she attacks is illogical; they set a trap and she immediately walks into it, yet they're sleeping in the open and she avoids them, etc.
The main relationship between the two leads, Aspen's family, and Mac's mother being tossed in there was so entertaining that I felt like just continuing researching what happened to Aspen's mother in the first book would have been a better conflict than a witch that shows up for a bit of plot advancement and then pops off again.
Despite all of that, it was still a fun, cute and cozy read, and I'll most likely read more in the series for a nice low-stress novel.
*****
Thank you to the author, Elle Lavendelle, for the advanced reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Spellbound & Speechless is book 2 in a series, following the Hawthorne sisters. It is the story of Aspen, the middle sister who was absent in book 1. After a spending time away from Starbrook, pursuing her fashion dreams (and running from the past), she finds herself back home and adrift. A chance encounter with a mysterious, brooding werewolf changes the trajectory of both their lives.
Mac is a lone wolf. He has spent his entire adult life pursuing his father's killer. A killer that has turned its eyes on the Hawthorne sisters, particularly Aspen. And Aspen being his fated mate? A complication he neither wants not needs right now. But he finds himself playing bodyguard after the killer he's been tracking makes a move at Aspen's workplace.
Aspen Hawthorne is the embodiment of "soft can also be strong". She's a love witch, so her powers lean towards softer things like glamours and persuasion, but she is fierce in the loyalty and love she has for family and friends.
Mac is a big softie under his brusque, broody demeanor. He's spent so many years on his own that he has a hard time opening up or asking for much needed help.
I really liked that in this universe fated mates are something you can choose to accept or not, without there being negative consequences for not choosing. More of a "you get to choose this person" rather than "you HAVE to choose this person".
Spellbound & Speechless is a perfect autumn read for lovers of werewolves and witches. Thank you Elle Lavendelle for the opportunity to advance read!
This was the perfect beginning of fall read! It’s cute, it’s cozy, with a nice speckling of spice and just the right amount of suspense and danger to keep you hooked. I loved this book, and am officially a fan of Elle Lavendelle’s writing!
Spellbound and Speechless has serious Charmed and Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls vibes. The troupe of witchy sisters, each with their own unique abilities and personalities, added a nice familial depth to the story’s coziness. On top of that, the tropes in this book checked all the boxes for me; fated mates, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, small town, breeding kink (no preg in this book), and “it’ll fit”/“good girl”/“my wife.” I mean, what’s not to love about a story that has all that yumminess in it??
Mac’s grumpiness was balanced perfectly with Aspen’s bright and bubbly nature. The romantic tension between them was so well done, with the Mac and Aspen dancing around each other, trying to deny the inevitable. There were moments where I was so frustrated that I wanted to shout at them to stop being fools and kiss already! Ultimately though, that just made it all the more satisfying when they do finally give in to their feelings.
4.5 stars, highly recommend if you’re looking for a sweet, low stakes, cozy romance. I loved Spellbound and Speechless and can’t wait until the next book comes out!
I really enjoy this author‘s writing. This book has such a nice cozy feel and of course I love any book that focuses on witches and magic. I love getting to know the characters and I am so invested in this story and in this universe. I definitely will be needing to read book one and I can’t wait for the rest of the sisters to get their happily ever after and to heal and grow from what happened to their mother. The chemistry and the dynamic between Mac and Aspen was just so fun and I especially love the fact that Aspen being a love witch was mentioned. I also love how the different sisters are all different types of witches and they rely on each other. I definitely recommend this series if you want something cozy and witchy and that’s just really sweet.

This was such an interesting story of coming back home.
Aspen left Starbrook after college and has avoided coming back even when her mother passed away. After losing her job at a fashion designer, she comes back to her family and hometown. Unfortunately, the situation isn't that simple. Aspen starts working at her sisters' tavern, but when a corrupt witch attacks, a mysterious werewolf is hired as security. Mac has been wandering and tracking the corrupt witch for years. When he and Aspen are drawn to each other, he fights his instincts and is determined to keep his secrets. As they uncover secrets surrounding his past and her mother's death, they have to figure out how to battle the corrupt which and whether or not they will give in to their supernatural connection.
I really loved how Aspen's bubbly personality could bring Mac out of his grumbly shell. I also really connected to how she felt about her sisters. Her relationships with her sisters weren't always simple, but she loved them regardless. The action and tension were wonderfully written and it had a cozy feel reminiscent of Gilmore Girls. I am excited to learn more about the other Hawthorne sisters and read the upcoming books!
This was so refreshing, I have read so many books where the fmc is a tough, badass, who struggles to open up. And don't get me wrong, I love those books, but it's nice to read about a badass soft fmc who loves pink and self care and love whilst still fighting for what she wants. Just because she is soft does not mean she has to be meek. There is strength in softness and so much strength in love.
Mac and Aspens' journey did happen sort of quickly but is very understandable based on what they are and the circumstances, and I'm so happy that I found that with one another.
The author did really well in managing the romance and the plot (not that there is anything wrong with just romance, I do love that sometimes). The story has kept me wondering. It can easily be read as a standalone, but I will go back and read the first one. And what the heck was the last bit? Now I need to follow the series to see what's up with everyone hating these witches and doing sneaky things to ruin or get rid of them.
✨I loved getting to return to the town of Starbrook - this time through the eyes of Aspen and Mac! I have thoroughly enjoyed this series by Elle Lavendelle, and I can’t wait to read about the other Hawthorne sisters in future books.
💕Aspen is a love witch returning home after her big city dreams didn’t work out. She is apprehensive about rejoining her family, especially after the death of their mother. Mac is a lone wolf who just came to Starbrook. When Aspen’s family tavern is attacked, he provides protection. As the two get to know each other, they quickly realize there is more to them than just friendship.
✨I love how Aspen’s love magic works - and I especially enjoyed the fact that Lavendelle put so much emphasis on self care as a form of love magic. I also loved the push and pull of Mac and Aspen - it really fit their back stories and personalities well, making the relationship feel relatable and real.
💕You’ll love this book if you love💕 ✨Fated Mates ✨Witchy Vibes ✨Shifter Romance ✨Small Town Romance ✨Grumpy/Sunshine ✨Cozy Fantasy
**I received an advanced copy of Spellbound and Speechless. All opinions are my own.**
Spellbound and Speechless returns to the world of Starbrook and the Hawthorne witches with the story of Aspen, older sibling who had run away from almost everything before losing their mother and hasn’t been able to come back. But losing her job and home forces her back into her hometown, and she finds much more than she bargained for in romance, friendships, family connections, and life as she settles back into her childhood home.
I loved book 1 of this series and this was no exception. It’s so great to come back and see more of the Hawthorne’s with returning characters getting more depth like Juniper, Ozan, Lauren, and more as well as seeing the potion bar in its glory. But Aspen and Mac’s story on it’s own is absolutely amazing and SUCH a page turner. I love shifter fiction and combining it with reluctant romance, love at first sight, witchy vibes, dangerous enemies, and so much more is SO good. Hugely recommend.
This book delivers on the cozy witchy vibes I was hoping for this time of year! I especially enjoyed Mac’s lowkey (haha understatement of the year) simping for Aspen and seeing Aspen reconnect with her sisters.
That said, I did have a few icks. The word “mate” gets repeated so often during intimate scenes that it pulled me out of the moment more than once. I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, but did they need to say it literally every 4 seconds? The romance also develops very quickly, and the timeline felt a little fuzzy, which made the pacing seem rushed.
Still, the plotline has enough intrigue that I’m curious to see how the rest of the Hawthorne sisters’ stories unfold. I’ll likely pick up the next book just to find out where the series goes.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was given an Arcade for this bookamd first time reading this author and did this book just hit in all the right spot It's kind of like a Gilmore girls/charmed vibe with werewolf 🖤 Ive always been obsessed with fated mates especially werewolf mates in my books and this one just had it I love how close the sisters are and even when they could have issues the love and protectiveness they have with each other was heart warming and the romance the pull in, pull back was honestly just right 💅 The drama also kept interested in the story after finishing this book I'm ready for the next one and going back to first one as well
If you’re looking for a pair of reluctant fated mates, a cozy fall read, a little bit of angst to keep you on your toes and a happily ever after ending then be sure to grab a copy of Spellbound and Speechless! It’s such a perfect fall/spooky time read, and it’s a quick read perfect for breaking a reading slump or just a small dose of escapism. Mac and Aspen are fantastic characters that you’ll be rooting for immediately! So if you like grumpy/sunshine romances, small towns, fall vibes, with just a dash of spice and a dollop of drama this is the perfect book.
Thank you to the author for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Spellbound and Speechless pulled me in right away and I found myself immersed in Aspen and Mac’s world. This fast paced has a great mix of romance, action, and found family. Mac has lots of walls put up around him and comes to Starbrook on a mission, but finds more than he was expecting. Aspen is trying to find her way in life and Mac seems to be a missing piece to help her get there. The bond they have develops naturally and is undeniable, but can their love also protect the ones they love?
This is the second book in a cute interconnected standalone for the Hawthorne sisters from small town Starbrook.
This was a quick, easy, and spicy read. If you like shifters and witches and fated mates, small town cosy vibes then this book is for you.
The premise isn’t complicated, some of the storyline felt a bit too easy when it could have been more in-depth, but overall, it was enjoyable and I’m keen to read about more of the Hawthorne sisters.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of this book, I am leaving a review voluntarily.
Aspen returning home to family after retreating away for a long time. Running into Mac a lone werewolf. Then enter an evil witch that steals magic. Mac steps in to protect Aspen even while denying they are mates.
Such a good story with a HEA. Looking forward to the next book in the series about the next sister.
This was a very good book. I enjoyed the characters and the story line. The romance between Mac and Aspen is so good I love a fated mates story. I also found it interesting that both the wolves and witches have different mating ceremonies. I also love that the witches have different gods that they each do things differently based on their gods.
This is definitely a cozy fall read and I totally get all the "this feels like Stars Hollow" comments. Something didn't completely click with me though. I think the conflict just wasn't completely believable? I'm not sure. I definitely will check out more from Lavendelle in the future though!
