Catherine Dickens, wife of Charles Dickens, experiences her own Christmas Eve transformation as she magically travels through her cherished memories to rediscover her lost love of Christmas.

Whew. I need to let this one simmer for a bit longer before I do a full review because I have THOUGHTS.
This is an "It's a Wonderful Life"-esque Christmas story, centered around Catherine Dickens, wife of Charles Dickens.
Catherine, pregnant with her 10th child, is struggling to feel the magic of Christmas. I can't imagine why. She is magically transported back in time to various periods of her life as a way to remember the meaning of Christmas and to help her find that joy again.
The problem? In real life, the Dickens's marriage is about to implode, with Charles slanderously portraying Catherine as crazy and scandalously taking up with an 18-year-old actress. Portraying Catherine and Charles as one big happy family while ignoring their true and tragic history made it difficult to buy into this story.
Had it been an unrelated person using A Christmas Carol to remember the meaning of Christmas, I would have liked it so much better.
This was a highly anticipated book for me, and I'm sad it fell flat due to the changing of history.
The writing itself was beautiful, and the message of the meaning of Christmas is a good and important one.

"A Carol for Mrs. Dickens" by Rebecca Connolly is a sweet and festive holiday retelling of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. I loved this beautiful, short, and poignant story of what Christmas may have been like for Charles Dickens’ wife after the success of his book “A Christmas Carol.” It conveys how Catherine might have felt extra pressure to enjoy Christmas and make it special. It was neat to see things from her point of view, and she was very relatable. The book has themes of family, faith, love, and service. I enjoyed following Catherine on three journeys through her memories (which mirror those taken by Scrooge and the three ghosts in “A Christmas Carol”). The message of Christmas and its true meaning was so beautifully shared. Catherine also learns to take the good with the bad, to not take things for granted, and to share the beautiful light of Christmas with the world. I loved the message of finding joy where it already exists and to keep Christ at the center. The book itself is beautiful, with illustrations throughout, and includes “A Christmastide Calendar” and “Victorian Christmas Traditions and History” in the back. This sweet and easy read will be sure to bring joy to your heart!

“I do not believe this giddiness will last, but I believe that my own happiness is a choice. And I choose it with him.”
This is the sweetest Christmas story, as it is easy to relate to Kate and the hustle and bustle that many moms experience during this beloved time of year. The burdens of life and expectations often cause a scrooge-like attitude to descend, and that’s just where she finds herself in 1851, as the wife of famed Charles Dickens.
A magical sprig of holly sends her on three pivotal journeys that remind her of the love and simple joys of family and the season, and this book is a pure delight. Many of us can use the reminders to find happiness in the little things, especially in our partner and family, as life turns heavy, busy, and difficult.
While I claim that Christmas is my favorite holiday, I’m already dreading the busyness, shopping, and obligations, but now I’m looking forward to shifting my attitude and focusing on what truly matters.
This story truly is the sweetest and I really enjoyed it.

This is my second novel to read by Rebecca Connolly. I'm overjoyed to have happened across this one.
Catherine, Mrs. Charles Dickens, receives her very own three "ghosts" -- or reminders of keeping the Christmas spirit alive.
Connolly has done well in piecing together the colorful personality of Charles Dickens -- even secondhand bringing to life his own characters inside of this book. I'm amazed how everything fits together so well!
The author blends in the true Christmas message, which I so enjoyed. She speaks of Jesus' birth and His impact on the world.
The Victorian illustrations sprinkled all throughout the book are just marvelous! They truly add to the aesthetic of the story.
For fans of A Christmas Carol, Downtown Abbey (or similar historical dramas).

Rebecca Connolly’s books and stories are long-time family to me so I was delighted to pick up her heartwarming novella-length tribute to a Christmas classic.

I have come to love shorter Christmas books that pack a punch in their messaging—and A Carol for Mrs. Dickens by Rebecca Connolly (available September 23) fit that to a T!
This story beautifully parallels A Christmas Carol, but instead of Christmas ghosts, it’s Christmas memories that guide Catherine Dickens back to the heart of the holiday. I loved the way it reminded me why we celebrate Christmas, how to find joy even in difficult times, and that light is always there if we’re willing to look for it.
This is one I’ll be thinking on all season long. A heartwarming, reflective read that captures the magic of Christmas in the most meaningful way.

I really wanted to love this novella because I enjoy Christmas Carol retellings. I like this author and thought she was the perfect one to write it. But this book fell flat for me.
The first and biggest thing that bothered me was the overabundant sentiment of love Catherine and Charles felt for each other. In reality they had a troubled marriage, so much so that, regardless of how scandalous it was in the 1850s, they legally separated in 1858. Granted, the troubles could have started closer to that time; there is no way I can know for sure. But, I suspect trouble was brewing long before 1858. (I won't go into details. If you want to know more about his personal life, there are plenty of books and online articles.)
The second thing was that I felt it got a bit preachy. All the lessons that Catherine learned from the various memories of her life were portrayed through long paragraphs of "this is the point." So much telling and not very much showing.
I will not be rereading this book. Thank you Net Galley and Shadow Mountain for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the beauty of this sweet story. A reminder that though there are struggles and trials, joy will come again. Sometimes we need gentle nudges and help at remembering what joy and carefree moments feel like. And sometimes we get too caught up in busyness and let that distract us. But taking time to focus on what's truly important and loving and serving those around us can truly help bring healing and joy.
When I reached the end of the story, I just felt such a lightening of my heart and spirit and was so grateful for the tender and sweet words of this story. There came a point where I teared up and just felt this beautiful feeling of calm and joy. It's been a year of many losses of loved ones this year. And it has been hard and emotional. And finding joy in the little moments and memories, as well as creating memories through intentional time with family, friends and loved ones has been a great priority and focus for me. This book was just a beautiful reminder of that and had me excited for Christmas to come soon. The joy and magic and excitement of celebrating our Savior, the one who knows our pain and sorrows, our joys and desires. He has been the one to bring peace and healing to my heart. I really loved watching Mrs. Dickens come full circle to some very precious and poignant moments in her life. Truly beautiful! I hope you enjoy it and that it touches your heart in some way if you read it!
Content: Clean. There are some Christian elements in the book as the focus is on Christmas and Christ's birth. Also, if you are aware of the history of Charles Dickens and his wife, Catherine, you'll know that not too much past this moment in time their marriage falls apart. I chose not to focus on that while reading this book and seeing the beauty of what Catherine was experiencing and learning. I encourage you to do the same. Regardless of what they have experienced and what was to come for them, the Dickens', more specifically Catherine, has a couple beautiful moments during this Christmas (yes I know it is fictionalized).

Loved it!
This year, I’ve received much reading joy from continuations—sequel novels with the continuity and/or style of an established series. So I was here for a version of the Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, that fleshes out the character of Catherine, wife of Charles Dickens. I loved envisioning a spiritual depth and growth in Catherine Dickens—such that would uphold her to find joy, in spite of the pains and losses of life. And I’ve read that Dickens’ daughter’s letters imply his regret for how he treated his wife in his later years—so I was ready to give him the benefit of the doubt in this story as well.
This sweet, simple story reminds us that though “all was not perfect, all would be well. And that is enough.” Author Rebecca Connolly’s tale is well-written, inspiring & perfect for gift-giving. Be sure to check it out this holiday season!

With eight children, endless parties to host, and another baby on the way, she’s completely worn out—and Christmas feels more like a chore than a joy, and she feels like Ebenezer Scrooge.

A Carol for Mrs. Dickens
by Rebecca Connolly is a great novella that helps put the heart and promise into a festive season.
I enjoyed this quick novella that was a take on Dickens’ classic novel. This time it is his wife, Catherine, that needs the self-reflection. She has the right foundation, that Christmas is ultimately about the birth of Christ, however this meaning loses its purpose if one is deflated, down, and dreading day to day life and looking at things as drudgeries.

by Rebecca Connolly is a great novella that helps put the heart and promise into a festive season.
I enjoyed this quick novella that was a take on Dickens’ classic novel. This time it is his wife, Catherine, that needs the self-reflection. She has the right foundation, that Christmas is ultimately about the birth of Christ, however this meaning loses its purpose if one is deflated, down, and dreading day to day life and looking at things as drudgeries.

You know, there was a lot of depth in this story. For such a short read, I found myself really pulled in, sympathizing with and totally understanding the mindset Kate was in. Yes, it’s a Christmas story, but I feel like the lessons she learns through her experience were so enlightening. There was a lot to take away, wisdom that could be applied throughout the year, not just during the holidays.
Kate is going through all the usual Christmas festivities, but this year, she’s not feeling any joy in it at all. And that’s not exactly ideal when you’re the wife of Charles Dickens. But when the magic of Christmas Past illuminates some long-buried memories, Kate begins to see Christmas and her life as a mother, wife, and believer in a new light.
This was a cozy read. I loved the length, the descriptions were perfect, and I truly felt pulled into the story and the emotions it stirred up.
I gave this 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" has always been a favorite of mine. "A Carol for Mrs. Dickens" offers a fresh take on the classic story. Catherine Dickens, busy with holiday plans for family and friends, finds her Christmas spirit dimmed by the grief of losing a child. Just like Ebenezer Scrooge in the original tale, Catherine experiences a series of events on Christmas Eve. These encounters shift her views on Christmas, her husband, children, and life. Catherine is a kind soul who deeply loves her family and husband. I really liked Catherine as a character. She was searching for the true meaning of Christmas and longed for the joy she felt was missing in her life.
This new Christmas Carol, though only 170 pages, is rich with important messages. It explores the Christmas spirit, the birth of Jesus, and the importance of helping those less fortunate. This book makes a perfect gift for loved ones or a welcome addition to your own holiday reading. It will warm your heart and fill your life with the Christmas spirit.

This story was as lovely and heartwarming as its cover. It’s a quick read, but one that easily transports you back to the era of Charles Dickens, and gently reminds the reader what Christmas is really all about.
Adding to the story’s charm are some beautiful black-and-white illustrations, and bonus content that includes Victorian Christmas traditions.
This is a lovely, inspirational story, and a great read for the Christmas season.

I found this to be an enjoyable light Christmas read. It delves into the mind of a mom at Christmas time, pregnant with her tenth child. Taking trips through time by a fantastical source of light, which shows her the memory of a younger self that she once was. And reminds her of things she may be overseeing in the busyness of her current life.
Todd has always found Christmas such an enjoyable time of year. It made me appreciate his fondness for the holidays even more.
Felt relateable and enjoyable…regardless of historical accuracy.

I really enjoy reading Christmas stories and especially love A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It's one of my must-reads every year. I was super excited to read this version of the story told from the perspective of Charles Dickens' wife.
Catherine, Charles' wife, is feeling like what I imagine a lot of women feel during the holidays, overworked and overwhelmed by all of the hoopla and busyness of the season, forgetting what the true meaning of it is all about. As she journeys to her past and sees what true happiness was for her and being reminded of the blessings that she has all around her, she comes to realize that she is in a good place and right where she should and needs to be. She finds her joy again.
This was a wonderful story and will now become one that I read right along with A Christmas Carol each year to remind me to savor the beauty and blessings of the season. I highly recommend A Carol for Mrs. Dickens.

I am an avid Christmas lover and also love A Christmas Carol, so I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to read an early copy of A Carol for Mrs. Dickens.
There are times in life when we lose our joy in events and activities that previously brought great joy. It's so easy as a wife and mother to let life overwhelm us.
This story is a reminder that happiness is a choice. Our children, spouse, and family are the key sources of that happiness, even if we may forget it on occasion.
I love the spin on the classic story and the events that brought back Catherine's joy and her urge to spread Christmas cheer.
This is one that is just an overall feel-good read that I will definitely be reading each year for Christmas. It was truly a joy to read, and my grandbaby loved having it read to her as well!
