Hockey is even hotter when the home team has green skin, tusks, and a mission to find human brides – willing human brides, because kidnapping wenches from a village is a thing of the past.
When it was time for Ozar to seek a wife, he decided to follow the time honored tradition of selecting a bride from among the humans, but the world has changed in the last few centuries. Kidnapping and pillage isn’t as easy as it once was. Now an orc in search of a wife needs to establish gainful employment, and learn things like how to operate a coffee machine.
Luckily the first is taken care of, even if he has no idea what this “hockey” job entails. Now all Ozar needs to do is find a female willing to marry an orc so he can get the heck out of this confusing city and go back home.
Jordan has given up on relationships, content to find joy with her friends, her family, and in her career. After the disastrous first game of the new hockey team, she comes across one of the players wiggling a loose tusk, and jumps in to assist with the dental emergency. But her interest in Ozar extends far beyond his teeth, and Jordan quickly finds herself falling for the orc.
Can a dentist and a hockey-playing orc find their happily ever after, even if their plans for the future head in opposite directions?
A grumpy-on-the-outside, golden-retriever-on-the-inside orc.
A confident, somewhat obsessive, reconstructive dentist.
It’s love at first sight in this monster romance paranormal rom-com featuring the new NHL team The Baltimore Tusks.
Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.
She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.
Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.
It started out strong and humorous but by the halfway point it was annoying how much Ozar seemed to think Jordan was just going to drop everything she'd worked so hard for and go live in the orc realm with him being a wife and mother. I do like the compromise they came up with though.
He came to play hockey. He found a future he never expected.
Ozar is a hulking orc warrior sent to Baltimore to join the Tusks, the worst team in pro hockey. He’s not here to win games or make friends. He’s here to do his job. But one smart-mouthed dentist with steady hands and zero patience for nonsense changes everything.
Jordan’s built a life she loves on her own terms. She fixes teeth, keeps her circle small, and avoids messy entanglements. But when a massive orc with no social filter and too much heart lands in her chair, she’s not ready for the spark or how fast it turns into something real.
What starts as steak and awkward flirting turns into skating lessons, quiet moments, and nights filled with heat and honesty. They’re drawn to each other, but dreams don’t always align. He imagines a future in his homeland. She’s rooted in her own. No one wants to lose themselves, and no one wants to walk away.
To make it work, they have to meet in the middle, figure out what love looks like between two very different worlds, and fight for it harder than they’ve fought for anything else. It’s not about giving everything up. It’s about choosing what matters and building something that lasts.
Ozar shifts from rigid tradition to vulnerability and choice. Jordan moves from guarded independence to emotional openness. Together, they grow from tentative connection to deep, balanced love. Messy, real, and earned.
A steamy, grumpy sunshine, orc-human, hockey romance packed with culture clash, slow burn tension, found family, and emotional depth, exploring differences, identity, communication, compromise, personal growth, family expectations, love, belonging, and partnership. It's about learning to bridge cultural gaps, rethinking what home means, and building a future that’s theirs alone.
I’m thrilled that Debra Dunbar has taken her incredible angel and demon-run world and combined it with hockey romance. With a twist, of course, as these hockey players are orcs.
GRUMPY PUCKING ORC was a ton of fun from the beginning where we meet Jordan and her friends as they attend a professional hockey game. After a chance encounter, sparks immediately fly between Jordan and a certain orc, and they eventually form a relationship that’s so sweet and swoony and all that good stuff. Their relationship isn’t without its problems though, as each of them are wanting different things for their futures. That’s where this book shines — in the ability for these two very different people to discuss, compromise, communicate, and find what works for them BOTH.
I adored both Jordan and Ozar and was rooting for them from the very beginning. Where Debra’s other books are filled with banter, delightfully crude witticisms, and so much humor, this one is a bit of a departure as the focus seems more on delivering a deeply emotional romance that showcases all that a healthy relationship should be. Don’t get me wrong — this one is still funny as hell, but the beautiful romance is what sparkles here.
Bottom line - I loved this one, and I loved that it’s first in a series because that means we get more. 5 stars, and I definitely look forward to the next book.
*Thanks so much to the author and her team for gifting an early copy!
It was a cute story and well edited. It’s definitely not for young readers as it is explicit in places. The story is unusual and fairly well done. I guess I was a bit disappointed because I was told that it was hysterically funny and I was looking forward to that. It got a chuckle or two out of me at the beginning, but that was it.
Ozar is ready to find a wife which means he must also have a job to take care of her. So he signed up for hockey -- whatever that is. He'll figure it out as he goes along. So far, it seems like a battle where they fight against the enemy while shirtless and carrying an odd curved stick instead of a sword. Eng feels it's a waste of time when their reason for being here is to find a wife and take her home! Bwat figured it was how they win a female here, performing a dance display to prove they are worthy and suitable as a life-partner. Ugwyll still thinks the old way is best -- grab a sturdy female of childbearing age and drag her home! And all of them agreed that they hated the stupid shoes like knife-blades they had to wear on the ice. Ugwyll summed it up as hitting a flat minotaur turd with a curved stick past the enemy team and into their nest or was that called a "net"? But win or not, they needed this "job" so that they could stay here and try to win a bride. A demon owned this team, and the angels set the rules in this world that they would have to follow whether they liked the humiliation or not. Just getting out onto the ice was embarrassing and the humans started to laugh as the Orcs slid on the ice, fell, and toppled like dominoes when one fell backwards. And the rules said they could not kill humans or would go home without a wife.
Jordan Schooner and her friends Abby and Willa were planning to watch a hockey game featuring the new Baltimore Tusks team. Jordan was an exceptional skater herself and was looking forward to this. The Orc players were huge. Would this still be hockey or a gladiatorial contest? But as they came out, Jordan recognized that none of them knew how to skate, and she wondered if they’d been shoved into this with no training, no preparation, and no knowledge at all of the game. After intermission, they got back on the ice and one player on the Red Wings human team tripped an Orc with his stick and then drove the puck straight into the orc’s face. A fight erupted and the Red Wings did not do very well against their opponents this time. For the rest of the game, the Red Wings skated around the Orcs with the puck, using their skating skills to keep away and score. The only Orc to score was Ozar.
The girls decide to go to Puck's for a drink after the game, but Jordan returns to her car to get her jacket and join them. She notices an Orc bleeding near her car since his tusk had been damaged in the game and she is eager to have a chance to repair it for him. Were the Orcs even given mouth guards to wear in the game? The two of them definitely develop feelings for each other as she learns how kind and gentle he is. But Ozar intends to take his bride home with him; however, Jordan wants to stay right where she is with friends and her dental reconstruction career. Will he be able to convince his mate to go home with him? Or will she choose to walk away instead?
This is a fun romantic read but as a major hockey fan I was disappointed. After a plague hits the Orc home realm that drastically kills most of the females, the orcs come through a portal to look for wives. There are a few restrictions on them – they must be gainfully employed and no stealing of women. Ozar is one of the orcs who came through and is employed as a player on the new NHL team, the Baltimore Tusks. Unfortunately, neither he or his fellow orcs has any idea about hockey. Jordan, a dentist, goes to the first game that is full of fights and embarrassing for the orcs. Running into Ozar after the game when he is trying to make sure he won’t lose a tusk; there is an immediate attraction. This book has a romance that although there is immediate attraction, goes through the learning about each other. I really enjoyed the difference in cultures, and the attempts of Ozar to get Jordan to agree to marry him turn out pretty funny at times. I had a problem with this book in the hockey aspects: there are a few things – goals are scored not getting points, teams do not travel by bus, there are several NHL rules that are ignored as well as a few other things that bothered me. If it had been a sport I didn’t know anything about I would have really enjoyed this book.
This book was wholly unexpected and I loved every minute of it. Modern human world Orcs are some of my favorites to read, and add in a sports romance - make it HOCKEY?!- and it's a recipe for I could not put this book down.
The plot and narrative are strong, though a tad cyclic at times, with a chance meeting early in the book. I like that the characters aren't immediately inseparable and that their relationship has a chance to grow. The supporting characters are really strong as well, and I know I want to read all the upcoming books as soon as possible (I need more hockey orcs!). I also love that these orcs weren't totally comfortable in the modern human world right from the start. That learning curve added a layer to the story that made it charming to read.
An absolutely charming read that is a must add to your bookshelf ASAP!.

This was such a fun and quirky read! The story follows a dentist who finds herself drawn into the world of orc hockey, and it’s as chaotic and entertaining as it sounds. The orcs’ attempts to navigate human society — from everyday manners to sports culture — are both comical and oddly endearing.
What I really liked is that beneath all the humor and cultural confusion, there’s a genuine romance that develops naturally. The chemistry feels warm and real, even when the situations get hilariously awkward.
At times I had to pause to piece together how some parts of the worldbuilding worked, but that didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment. It’s a lighthearted, unique take on paranormal romance, perfect if you want something that’s equal parts funny, romantic, and just a little weird — in the best way possible.

Debra's new book is fantastic, and if you are familiar with her work this book is set in the same world as her imp series. Ozar is here to find a wife and if playing the hateful hockey to get one he would play. At the very first game all ozar and his teammates fall down a lot and get in a fight. After the game he runs into a human woman that seems obsessed with teeth. Jordan is a human dentist and she is having a girl's night to see the new orc hockey team and after the game she stumbled on an orc that has had his teeth and tusk damaged in the game intrigued by the idea of doing something new by fixing Ozars teeth. From the very first meeting the two felt immense attraction and they began dating but as they get to know each other they find they have two very different ideas about the future. There is a lot to work out and both are afraid of getting hurt. Fantastic new book from Debra!
The orcs were so funny. They got human traditions and sayings all mixed up. Some things were taken to literal and at other times missed the point entirely. But the way he treated his woman made up for all the blunders. Not knowing how to play hockey was difficult for all of them. I liked the perseverance some of them had. The main female fell in love really quickly but fate does that to you. This story was funny at times and frustrating too. But seeing how they kept pushing themselves orc and the dentist as well made for a fun story. It was a little wordy at times. Judy was a great addition- my cat also leaves us surprises just like Judy i laughed out loud several times. The bedroom scenes were not graphic. No big drama scenes just a few weeks of falling g in love.

Ozar is an orc, and he is facing a battle that he isn’t used to, but he was told he had to have a job to live there in order to get a wife. So, he is about to play a game he has no knowledge of, hockey. His friends and teammates consider it to be dumb, but they are willing to do anything so they can get a female. Everyone has a different opinion on the how and the why of the matter, but Ozar just wants to do right so he can find a willing woman. Grumpy Pucking Orc is a part of the Orcs on Ice series. A fun enjoyable read that catches your attention wondering what they will come up with next. The storyline is original as are the characters, I absolutely adored this read. Grab this book and the rest of the series and enjoy.

This is book 1 in the Orcs on Ice series and I absolutely loved it. I had no idea what to expect, but the blurb pulled me in. Such a fun take on orcs and then add in hockey - I'm in! I laughed out loud more times than I could count, I swooned, I feel in love with Ozar and his attempt to understand humans and hockey, and smiled big when he and Jordan found their HEA. Ready for the stories for the rest of the team.

If you want to laugh and then sigh with "aw..." enjoyment, this is the book for you. i was 30 pages in and went to preorder the second book!
Take one neurotic cat lady dentist, add one befuddled but endearing Orc who is gear to play hockey and find a wife, neither of which he knows how to do and mix with a fated mate bond and an Orc teammate who thinks he is Wikipedia and Dr. Ruth combined because he can use the internet. I swear, you really to get this book for some first rate enjoyment!
Jordan and Ozar make a fun couple. Ozar's unfamiliarity with basically everything human, up to and including hockey makes far some seriously humorous scenes. Jordan's preoccupation with reconstructive dentistry is equally unexpectedly fun. They both have interesting friends/teammates to add an extra level if interest to the story. I'm looking forward to seeing how this series develops.
Jordan is a career woman, a dentist who values helping people. Ozar is a new to the human world Orc in search of a bride, playing hockey while he searches. Can they overcome both of them wanting to stay in their homeland or can they find a compromise and happiness?
Wonderful lovable characters and a heartfelt whirlwind romance. Meet cute in a parking lot and a lot of fun reading about how the Orc’s are learning about humans.
This was a strong start to the Orcs on Ice series, it had that element that I wanted and thought was a strong opening chapter to this world. Debra Dunbar has a strong style for the genre and was glad it was so well written. I was invested in the characters and thought worked well in the world, I’m excited to read more in this world.

I really like Debra Dunbar and thought the rest of her series were very fun. This book dragged for me. The “conflict” wasn’t really explored and the characters felt flat, which gave me nothing to root for. Jordan’s cat, Judy, was the best character. The book is fine as a paranormal fantasy and it’s written overall better than most, but was disappointing compared to the author’s other series
so I love that the orcs have to play hockey and live in the human realm but have 0 clue about how to skate or even speak English at first. This story has such a cute plot with the fact orcs wanting to find brides and just being clumsy/funny.
My only real issue is with Jordan. She is putting off shelfish AF vibes. She seems to just want to keep her life and F%## what Ozar wants.
Would I read this again? No. Would I recommend it to a friend? Maybe
Part of the Orcs on Ice series. What happens when orcs need "willing" human brides? Not kidnapping them. Ozar, an orc and Jordan, a human meet and the plot follows their journey to a HEA. Waiting for the next book.

This isn't the first romance ive read featuring a female dentist but its still quirky and fun. I don't usually like sports romance but this was fun. Light hearted and sweet this fish out of water story makes me excited to read the next one.
What a great start for a new series! I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but it was an interesting change from the usual hockey romance. I loved the mix of hockey and the monster romance world. I loved the characters and the storyline. I can't wait for the rest of the series!.

This is book 1 of Orcs on Ice. I like that the story is set with Orcs who know nothing about hockey playing hockey. It is fun story of romance and learning to love the one you're with. HEA ending.

I really enjoyed this book. Dunbar did a fantastic job creating a story about a bunch of hapless orcs that know nothing about Hockey coming together to win games and hearts. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to reading more.
