The current 'action' is dragging out and I am suspicious that it is due to padding ... I hope not, but it looks like it at the moment :(" @38% David Slaton #6 is being given a rest, shelved as 'a dnf maybe try again'. I'll try and get back to it soon - I hope!
Easily the weakest book in this six-book series. There are two parallel plots: one involves a group of bad guys putting together a WMD, and the other is David Slaton trying to find out why his wife and son have disappeared. The first story is incredibly dull, while Slaton's story is better, but not very good until the last 50 pages or so. If the ending hadn't been as good as it was, this book would be a one star for me.
I usually start at the beginning of a series but given I wanted to "listen" to a book this time, I got this one. I was hoping I didn't have to read the other 5 books in the series. To begin with, a reader can make or break a good book. This reader, P J Ochlan, was fabulous, the book though left me wondering if they were all the same. I kept thinking that this "agent" retired or not, could have become a superhero in my mind. I enjoyed his action and thought process. The parallel plot (or sub plot) was confusing and detracted from the story., David Slaton is excellent and I will be reading/listening to at least one other book in the series-hopefully "The Perfect Assassin".
They are only getting better and better. Assassin's Revenge by Ward Larsen is another story about David Slaton. The way these are developing I may need to read some of his other stuff. This one had a different twist on the theme that is somewhat the same in all the books.
David Slaton is a must-read assassin in today’s genre of lethal killers. While this is not the first book in the series, Ward Larsen wrote it effectively for a new reader to be able to immerse him/herself into the world of David Slaton without any second thoughts.
David Slaton is an Israeli Assassin, known as Kidon, who has left his life of killing behind and is settling down with his wife and kid, albeit they are keeping themselves in the shadows so as to not invite any visitors from Slaton’s dark past. As fate would have it, he gets dragged back into the world of espionage and lethality when his family goes missing and he has to get back to his old ways to get to the bottom of their disappearance. At the same time, a sinister plot is being hatched involving nuclear material, stolen secretly from various nuclear facilities all over the world, with diabolical and political consequences. The intersection of these two threads is handled by Mr. Larsen in a very interesting manner that keeps the reader guessing about what’s to come next.
As an action fan, I wouldn’t have been completely satisfied without fast-paced and believable action sequences, and fair enough, this book had some gritty and grounded hand to hand combat and tactical scenarios that appeased my inner tactical nut. The weapon system details are handled accurately and provide a visual aid in shootouts throughout the book for hardcore action fans.
While at the same time, simply action does not run the book, but it’s a compliment to the emotional and intelligence driving force of the book that comes from both Slaton’s emotions, and from the smart and timely narrative respectively. Slaton’s search for his family keeps the readers engaged very well, encouraging readers to resonate with his pain and fear of losing his family again, having already lost one family years ago that led to him taking the path of an assassin. Slaton is joined by an old friend from CIA, Anna Sorensen, who has a strong bond with Slaton and creates a welcoming aroma from her presence in the book. The antagonists are not simply described as evil, but are written in a dark and grounded manner, showing the motivations and drive of the antagonists for their diabolical scheme.
Mr. Larsen is a former Airforce pilot and his aerial prowess is demonstrated plenty, especially during one of the wildest and most fascinating infiltrations into enemy grounds via F/18 A Super Hornet, a state-of-the-art fighter jet. The details of the jet and the environment of the deck of an aircraft carrier are pleasant and exciting to read about as Mr. Larsen sums up the surreal feeling of being surrounded by the sea and jets capable of reaching supersonic speeds in flight.
With a time-bound nail-biting premise, accompanied with incredible twists and turns at every moment, I could not help but stay glued to this book, finishing it at 4 in the night because I could not bring myself to put it down. Even for a new recruit into the David Slaton series, this book allows for the readers to get strapped in quick and tight before the story takes flight from the runway. I definitely recommend this book for all fans of action thriller genre and I am definitely going to go back to the earlier adventures of David Slaton to prepare myself for his next mission.
I'm a fan of Ward Larsen's books in general and the David Slaton series specifically. So I was thrilled when I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Assassin's Revenge to check out prior to the release date. After having a chance to read it, I can say this book didn't disappoint and I recommend it to all spy/military thriller fans.
As usual, I will try to avoid spoilers so here's my observations:
1) This book combines bad actors in the usual places like North Korea and ISIS with an unlikely co-conspirator who's helping the bad guys for his own reasons, which are complicated. It also has someone is trying to help David Slaton, but goes about getting his attention in a misguided way due to having a hidden agenda. So can't really call him a good guy, but he's integral to the story. As a result, there are complex characters with complex motivations that are interwoven into a crazy plot that David has to stop all while being in personal anguish due to his family situation. Good character development by the author that really drives the book.
2) When you think you have everything figured out, there's a huge twist that changes the game. At that point it's a race against the clock followed by another race against the clock with major implications each time. The book really flies through the last ~25% as things come to a head and reach a resolution. This twist, along with others throughout the story, adds complexity, uncertainty and a human element that not only removes predictability but also accelerates the speed at which the reader consumes the book.
3) There is a good mix of set up and action. When David needs to kick ass, he does so without remorse. He throws caution to the wind in order to foil the main plot, despite the risks involved. He also pulls one of the craziest stunts ever to get inserted into the book's final theater of operations in order to save the ones he loves. Gotta say, that last part is really insane and I loved it. No idea how the author came up with it, but bravo!
In summary, this is a really fun book with a lot of action, interesting characters and a solid plot. If you're a fan of this series or the genre in general, do yourself a favor and read this book.
Assassin's Revenge hits bookstores tomorrow, August 20th. Go pick it up, support a great author and enjoy a fun book. Here's a link to buy from Amazon:
This is a great continuation of an already great series!
What a fun and entertaining read! I'm been really enjoying the David Slaton series, and I think this was War Larsen's best novel yet. There is tons of action, an INCREDIBLE twist, and very dynamic and fun characters to follow. I thought this book had everything that usually is involved in a good thriller. I highly recommend picking the book up.
Although read the previous book in the series is not necessary before reading Assassin's Revenge, I'd still recommend it. Or, at the very least, read Assassin's Revenge and go back and read the others. This is a fun series that you don't want to miss if you're a fan of thriller/spy novels.
Ward Larsen has a knack referred to in fantasy circles what is known as a Sanderlanche, where so much stuff happens in the end of the book the reader has to pay close attention.
Once again Slaton is somehow identified and found by persons unknown. He returns to the marina ostensibly to his wife and son, only to find their sailboat missing. He's contacted with the information that his family is being held until he performs an assassination.
Another great adventure for David Slaton. This time involving a fake kidnapping followed by a real one, a nuclear detonation by the Middle East by way of North Korea, and a coup then a coup hunt.
All in all, they managed to pack a lot of twists and turns into the plot as usual. But Larsen manages to make it all easy to follow, and, moreover, believable. This was a great story about how far David would go for his family and how you best not get in his way when he’s on a personal mission like that.
I love this series and this latest addition is one of the best I have read.
David Slaton, the Mossad trained assassin just wants a normal life with his wife and son, even though they stay on the run from his former life. In this episode someone kidnaps his family and getting them back unharmed is his top priority. This sets him on a collision course with a diverse groups of bad guys and one horrible outcome for the US.
Lots of action and edge of your seat thrills plus even a F-18 foray into North Korea to settle things once and for all. How is that for David's "normal life?"
This book comes out in August and I highly suggest you put it on your to read list!
Overall a good book. Too much buildup and not enough action. It's all in the details. No one can shoot a semiautomatic pistol accurately at 100 yards. A rifle definitely yes but not a pistol. Other small but inaccurate details.
David Slaton joins the ranks, for me, of those really fun thrillers. I enjoyed this book beginning to end, and was led astray by the author more than once. Hoping you join me as a reader, but now I have to go back and catch up with the rest of the series.
I was hooked by the end of the first chapter of Assassin's Revenge. Who the hell ever heard of infil from an F-18 mil jet by use of ejector seat at hundreds of knots? This done over North Korea to protagonist and desperate operative David Slaton. out to save his family and the mission. What happens when Seal Team 5 invades North Korea? Why? I read fast but I never finished the last 125 pp so quick in my life! Larsen has written the most exciting "do or die" espionage thriller of the year - sure to be nominated for 2019 thriller of the Year Award!! It's ending beats that of Brad Thor, Jack Carr, Matt Betley, Kyle Mills, and Greaney/Rawlings for that OMG, hold your breath ending. "Spectacular" doesn't do it justice. If you read this one, I guarantee you'll go back and get and read his previous pubs. I love geopolitics/history in thrillers- Thor, Carr, Flynn are some of the best at it. Larsen provides it a little intensely, but it sets the storyline and he doesn't reiterate it. Larsen is a retired mil pilot and the writing style shows it. He utilizes a detailed analytical approach in writing. You pick up on it immediately. This is an intellectuals ideal mil/pol thriller which former military will love. You can see a plot like this playing out in real time. North Korea with the support of the Russians, Chinese, ISIS, gets its hands on stolen nuclear material and creates a nuke the size of "Big Boy" to set off in US waters - they aim for Hawaii. The protagonist is drawn into the happenings by someone who wants this taken to the CIA and US intelligence - hence former Mossad agent,David Slaton follows the trail where his "kidnapped" family is used as bait. He alerts US intell and soon the whole Pacific fleet is on alert. Parachuting from an ejector seat. he enters N.Korea with US SEAL Team 5 not far behind. All this is in the middle of a coup d'etat that has you at the edge of the seat. Ever wonder what happens when nuke goes off? Can it be "fizzled?" got to read to find out what's next. For those that adore the fight scenes, weaponry, plotting of infil, execution, and exfil- IT'S ALL HERE! Likeable characters, evil villains and stiff-rumped admirals and generals doing a "Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot." It's a novel you can give your kids to read- they've heard far worse on the school playground. I adore this genre and this book is one that you want to buy in a hurry because it may be hard to find in a bookstore in several weeks. Info available on @wardlarsen.com Larsen writes an intense detailed plot with dialog that quickly moves the scene with all the fight scenes you expect in these thrillers. the last hundred pages have you doing a marathon to see how it ends. This is a "spectacular" book that all fans need to read. The masters at this tradecraft have stepped up the game. This is a 11+ nuke blast read -no pun intended. Bravo Ward Larsen!!
So. I got this book from the library as part of a Blind Date with a Book program. When I opened it up and saw the fighter jet on the cover I actually laughed out loud because I was sure this wasn’t going to be my kind of book.
I’m happy to say that I wasn’t entirely correct in that assumption. This book was enjoyable and fast paced and had a couple of twists that I wasn’t expecting. I would say, overall, that I enjoyed it.
But I noticed something weird. It took until nearly halfway through the book before we met a named female character. And in fact, all told, there were probably only 5 or 6 in the whole book. It was something I noticed early on and then tracked as I read and I just feel like it was unnecessary. There was one part where the main character met a woman and asked her name but then it was too difficult for him to follow the pronunciation of so we didn’t get to learn what it was. And then she recurred in a couple of other scenes and the author had to find a way to make sure we knew who he was talking about. That’s a good character to name
The women that had names were all pretty badass but still it feels like a flaw in an otherwise well-written book.
4 1/2 **** for this terrific novel that could actually be 'real' news any day now. This is the 6th Ward Larsen novel featuring ex-Israeli assassin, David Slaton who has left that world (outwardly, at least) to live a peaceful life with his wife and 2 1/2 year old son on a boat they call home. Assassin's Revenge is a methodical, step-by-step telling of a story of intrigue, murder, and international crises involving David, his family, a deputy CIA officer, the North Koreans, and a group of ISIS-like middle easterners. Basically, the ISIS group work together with a No. Korean general to disrupt the United States with the detonation of a nuclear device. Involved in this is also a rivalry between this No. Korean general and the Dear Leader! When David's wife and son are kidnapped, all systems are "GO", as far as David is concerned. This leads to an exciting, realistic (in most cases) international adventure that makes for a riveting read.
I was really disappointed with this read, loved the previous books but this one not so much. I don't know if the author was trying to hard to humiliate the character but it did not work for me. This is supposed to be the top guy and he did nothing but make mistakes easy mistakes, I get the whole on a boat thing and lost a step but this was falling off a cliff. Characters like this I want super human I want unbelievable not confused and mistake ridden. Someone at this level should I will give it to you can be a rusty but there was no part in the book I felt David is back or really better than the competition. It was a long read and as anyone who has read a review of mine I hate when the bad guy in the end is dispatched unceremoniously, if that is the case don't build him up then let us down.
Another well done effort in this series by Ward Larsen. There's a lot I like about this series and the David Slaton character. However, the basic dynamics of him being supposedly a dead, former Israeli assassin with a wife and daughter who is always at the risk of being forced back into the game due to a threat to his family has a limit. It would be refreshing for him Larsen not to have to lean so heavily on that plot driver.
In this story, they are kidnapped and Slaton finds himself involved in a plot by North Korea to disguise a strike at the US as a terrorist plot by ISIS. Slaton is a good character and the action is well done, but it would be a good step to find some other motivators for Slaton.
It really pains me to give a low rating to a David Slaton book, but I was very disappointed in this latest entry in what had been for me, up to this point, a 5-star series. I almost wish I could get my money back for this one. Much too much mind-numbing incredibly long descriptive passages that obviously showed all the research that went into this book, but for me just mostly boring. I scanned through pages and pages of it. The action, what there was of it in between the descriptive pages, was way over the top, even for books like this where you EXPECT it to be ridiculous at times. I don't know if this is the last in the series. I hope not. I loved this series and hope this book was just a one-off from the usual engrossing fast reads that preceded it.
This is my first David Slaton book, and it was an entertaining if complicated read. Ward Larsen weaves a good story. I think I was a little lost at first because I had no backstory on the character, but once I settled in, I realized that his layered character profile is important to interpreting his actions and reactions. The story itself moves quickly, both in location and action. There's a lot to unravel about the secondary characters as well. If you like complexity of characters and story, can suspend belief at times, and enjoy a good old fashioned action thriller, I'd recommend Assassin's Revenge. I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.
Another terrific David Slaton story by Larsen. I am catching up on the series and it is every bit as thrilling as I remembered the previous books to be. David, a former Massad operative, known as the Assasin, now turned American asset, is on another hunt as his wife and son disappear off of their boat. Throw in a North Korean nuclear bomb plot against the US and the tale becomes wilder, more intense and increasingly nerve wrecking, page by page. Flipped through non stop to get to the unraveling. Great book. And now, on to the next one👍
I love the David Slaton military/espionage series. This is a fast paced action thriller with great characters and unexpected twists right up to the very end. This is the 6th book in the series and can easily be read as a stand alone but there will be spoilers about the developing relationships between the characters. I strongly recommend starting with the first book "The Perfect Aassassin" and readingthem in order. Strongly recommended
Ward Larsen has done it again! Assassin’s Revenge is a GREAT NOVEL! The lead character, David Slaton, continues to provide a very realistic story line that is believable and fast pace. I highly recommend the David Slaton series and believe that most people would find these novels very interesting. This is a must read series. Look forward to the next David Slaton novel.
Lots of action and fast paced. After his wife and son suddenly go missing, David receives a text sending him to assassinate someone. He turns the tables, saving his intended target and discovering a conspiracy involving a nuclear bomb. Another great read by Ward Larsen.
Excellent character build and development. I like the character arcs. I also appreciate the little reveals that keep the reader guessing and reading.slaton is a great character and his evolution over the timeline of the series is masterful. I look forward to the next in the series when it is released.
4 1/2 stars. I was a little put off by the aircraft on the cover, thinking it was another right-wing rah-rah military book, but it turns out it's not! I enjoyed it--good read! It does feel a bit disjointed and it's a plot I've encountered before, but that really doesn't matter. I plan to read more titles by this author.
I like the David Slayton series. They get better with each one, in my opinion. Because the writers will jump from one thing to another you have to pay attention to the characters. I have been fooled a couple of times when events didn't turn out the way I thought they would.
This is a gifted writer whose words hold you tightly as you fly with him, ride with him, or fight with him. You cheer him on. My greatest thanks to the author is for his recognizing that there are enough adequate words in the English language so there is no need for profanity.
I have been a fan of Ward Larsen's David Slaton series for a long time. Revenge did not disappoint. There were plenty of plot twists, and I even stated aloud at one point, "What the hell is going on?" In true Ward fashion I soon found out. This was a fun read and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
