Thriller | horror | mystery

Into the woods we go, to lose our minds and find our souls…

It was supposed to be a peaceful getaway…up until she found a head in the ravine…

They want to have a baby, but Harlow is suffering from unexplained fertility (bc drs don’t know half of what we think they do) and tells her she’s too stressed and should stop working for a while. As a cancer researcher, Harlow loves working but agrees to take some time off.

So her husband Gregor and her and Gregor’s son all move to an island for a bit. To his families home and land. But there’s something deeply off about this island and the people who inhabit it. And then there’s also Gregor’s mother. Oh boy buckle up for her! But Harlow has her mind on one thing only - getting pregnant.

🎧: Also listened to the audio and def recommend it. Amanda Leigh Cobb does a phenomenal job narrating. Her voices and pitches - everything was perfect. Great listen.

I freaking loved this book. It’s hilarious but still has all the creep vibes and a solid mystery. Couldn’t put it down.

The tradwife aspect was so fun, but so was the whole island - trying to figure out what was going on. Fabulous storyline, writing, characters, and mystery.

Such an easy 5 star read. A one-sitting read type of book.

And that ending … LOL!

Memorable 😂👏🏼👏🏼

Completely enthralling book that I couldn't put down because I wanted to understand what was happening. I love how completely creepy and weird this story was.

The book starts off with Harlow at a fertility clinic, learning that she is having trouble conceiving. The doctor tells her she should consider taking time off from her very busy, stress filled scientist job. Her husband agrees and suggests they move to his hometown temporarily. It's located on an island pretty isolated, and he is trying to work on a new album there with his band. Harlow agrees to take 6 months off there to see if it will help them have a baby since that is something she really wants.

As soon as she gets to the island, she starts feeling uneasy by first her creepy mother in law and then by the strange townspeople. She soon then stumbles across a head in the woods down in a ravine and is desperate to figure out what is going on. Her husband and others seem to be lying to her and possibly drugging her. She takes off on a journey to find out the truth about her husband and this town.

Overall, I loved the character of Harlow. I feel like she was extremely relatable, and the choices she made all throughout were exactly what she should have to protect herself and her adopted child. The story was very complex, and I found myself riveted in the story, wanting to find out the truth behind everything going on.

I loved that this was a very fresh, different, kind of thriller than ones I'm used to. I also loved the horror elements. The ending was a bit confusing. But after re reading, I think I understand it, and it fits with the overall tone of the book. Thank you, NetGalley, for this ARC. I would recommend this and would read more from this author in the future.

This is a “can’t put it down” book. It may seem to start slow but before you know it, the book starts gets dark and creepy and you know then it’s time to get cozy, comfortable and be prepared for a good thriller - or that’s how it seemed to me. It was a good thriller!!!

Harlow “Low” Sullivan and her husband Gregor, go to his family’s private island so she can destress, per doctor’s orders. They are trying to have baby and Harlow has a fertility problem. Along with Gregor’s son, Sam, they arrive to a thriving island community - lot of blond, blue-eyed women it would seem. Their neighbors are Kristin and Ben Bradley; Ben’s a band men with Gregor; Kristin is a trad-influencer (with 3 children). Within an early tour of the island, Harlow is sure she’s seen a head in a ravine but soon learns from Gregor that a police investigation said it was a deer’s head. So it appears things are not what they seem. Harlow gets into an investigative mode because she’s sure something is up with Kristin and Gregor. No spoilers here - you have to read the book to find out what is happening between those two.

I liked the character of Harlow; I thought she was well developed. I liked the illusions to magical realism that pop up in the story. The suspense and creepiness is well paced and well done.

If you’ve read or seen the movie, Rosemary’s Baby, this book is for you. Loved it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for allowing me to read this exciting ARC.

I'm still shaking off the chills from The Ravine.
I Imagine Children of the Corn vibes, but set on a misty island where "domestic bliss" is a cult requirement.
The Setup:
• The Location: A wooded island where the trees seem to be watching.
• The Neighbor: Kirsten, a "tradwife" influencer who is a little too perfect (and a little too close to Harlow's husband).
• The Ritual: A community where the women are obsessed with an unseen figure and the secrets hidden in the ravine.
The Hook:
Harlow came here to conceive a child and find peace. Instead, she found evidence of a murder and a husband who is changing before her eyes. Is she losing her mind in an Ambien haze, or is she the next "missing girl" the locals don't talk about?
Read this if you love:
• Folk horror & cult vibes
• Unreliable narrators
• Dark psychological suspense
• "Perfect" communities with dark secrets
The "Vibe" Checklist
• Theme: Folk Horror / Psychological Suspense
• Location: Remote Island / The Ravine
• The Threat: The Unseen Figure / The Woods
• The Pressure: "Keep the Home" / Tradwife Culture

What an intense, thrilling read. This book had you cheering on the fmc to keep digging and searching for answers. The author did a great job of making you turn the page to see what was going to happen next. You jist know the second that Kirsten is introduced in the story you wont like her and that something is "off". "Into the woods we go, to lose our minds and find our souls". Will there be a happy ending and if so, who's?

I could NOT put this book down! If you enjoy creepy cults, nefarious "trade wife" tropes, or even a twisty mystery, you are going to love this read! The character and world building is excellent, and the pacing of the story is perfect! I will most definitely be reading more from this incredibly talented author!

effective if very predictable horror with an effective but surprisingly standard ending for such a wild-seeming premise. 4 stars. tysm for the arc.
