The Nocturne Abyss

Rate this book
From Best-Selling Author, Dakota Wilde, comes an epic tale of danger, betrayal, and love.

Dear Reader, you are cordially required to attend The Nocturne Abyss... beware that not all who play make it out alive.

Nocturne Abyss is hosted once a year by the gods, summoning sixteen players from the city of Paris to play in its twisted and deadly game located in the expansive catacombs beneath. Players must choose a golden mask to wear during the competition that gifts them with one magical power. To make it to the end of the game alive will require all their strength, wit, and luck—avoiding the pit falls that lay in wait in the tunnels, and hoping their fellow players don't try to eliminate them along the way.

Odessa Deveraux never thought she would be summoned. She had her whole life mapped out, until one knock on her door changed everything. Now she must fight to survive the trials of Nocturne, hoping to make it out alive. As she fights to win, she must rely on herself and resist the handsome rake of the opposing team that has gotten under her skin. His smiles might be captivating, but wanting him is out of the question.
Besides, Odessa has her fiancé back home waiting for her. Trusting a fellow player could be deadly, but falling for one would be even worse. Betrayal, death, and desire lurk in every corner of Nocturne.
Will Odessa be able to survive the trials? Or will her heart lead her astray to her death?

This was such an exciting and entertaining read! It gave creepy "As Above So Below" vibes with a deadly competition and meddling Gods and Goddesses. The way Dakota described some of the scenes in the catacombs had me feeling claustrophobic right along with the characters.

Speaking of the characters, I absolutely loved the chemistry and angst between Odessa and Dex. It was insanely addictive and I could not get enough of them. Dex was everything I loved in a cocky, brooding MMC that would do anything for her.

From start to finish, this was fast-paced and intense, and while I guessed the plot twist pretty early on, it still had me absolutely sucked in and gasping in surprise. I absolutely need the next book ASAP!

What to expect:
catacombs under Paris setting
deadly competition
gods and goddesses
enemies-to-lovers
broody antihero
magic

This was so fun!!

It's almost like Squid Games meets the Hunger games, but with masks that grant you magical powers.

I have never heard of or seen this on socials, and it's a damn shame, because I absolutely loved this story.

Once a year, mortals are summoned to participate in the deadly game, Nocturne Abyss, hosted by the Gods. To refuse or run away, means death. To participate, and not be the last one standing, means death.

The concept and plot was soooo unique, I think that's why I enjoyed it so much. Prior to entering the games, the mortals are allowed to choose a mask that will grant them the magic abilities associated with that specific mask. By killing the other contestants and taking their mask, you also absorb their power... so if you're the last one standing and YOU'RE the one that killed everyone, you would walk out with riches, and several magical abilities. HOW COOL.

The FMC Odessa starts out really meek and complacent with her life prior to the games. She was okay having her life laid out for her. However, you see a lot of growth and self-realizations with her throughout the story, but she never loses that kindness.

Dex, our MMC. PLEASE. I love him. He is so arrogant and very forward it's comical. Not only that, but the way he desires Odessa is so wholesome. The tension between them is palpable, and it is a true slow burn. Once the tension snaps though, buckle up, it's good. Well worth the wait.

This is also a short and easy dark romantasy read. You have tension, gods & mortals, slow burn, deadly games, enemies to lovers (I mean they have to kill each other so), unique magic abilities/concept, oh and a cliff hanger. You're welcome.

I will say that I did guess the big plot twist pretty early on, but I was actually still shocked and confused as to why? So I will not so patiently be waiting for book two.

Go read it.

I absolutely devoured this book! It was such a fun and easy read, I didn’t want to put it down! The pace was absolutely perfect for the story line, and there wasn’t any filler like some books tend to have. Everything you read was needed to build the plot and keep you entertained. This book had two of my favorite tropes sprinkled in, enemies to lovers and slow burn. I couldn’t wait for the burn to finally peak, I was craving it! Odessa and Dex have an electrifying chemistry, and I rooted for them the moment she laid eyes on him. The concept of the story immediately grabbed my attention when Dakota first announced it, so I am glad it held up to the hype I created in my head! Please read all trigger warnings! There is cheating in this book, not on the MMC, so if that is a no-no for you I recommend skipping this one! I predicted the little plot twist but still had my jaw on the floor during the last 10 pages. I went from crying to shocked into silence. Book two cannot come quick enough for me! Thank you Dakota for another wonderful read!!

I loved this!! Super fun and fast paced! Or maybe I was just that consumed. Odessa and Dex 🫣🫠😮‍💨 the angst and chemistry between these two. Enemies to lovers is one of my all time fav tropes and the slow burn is starting to grow on me. I was just waiting for these two from the moment she saw him. (I didn’t really care for her fiancé 🤷🏼‍♀️)The way this has me CRAVING more!I know I used the word fun in this review, it is still dark. Please check the trigger warnings.

Ohhhhhh my god-tier Parisian gods 😱—I went in blind to this one and got PLAYED harder than one of those poor golden-masked souls in the catacombs. Dakota Wilde, how DARE you 😤 … I was 95% of the way through thinking, "okay, maybe we're inching toward a happily ever after..." and then BAM—SUCKA. CLIFFHANGER. I literally ranted in my hotel room like a madwoman. 😭🔥

This book is addictive, a dark and seductive blend of The Hunger Games + Caraval + The Night Circus with a side of SMOKING HOT magical angst 🖤💥. Imagine a trial-style death game set in the French catacombs, where players wear magical golden masks gifted by gods and steal each other’s powers after death… yeah, let that sink in. 😈

Our girl Odessa is thrown into the abyss (literally and emotionally), and watching her unravel was such a ride—smart, desperate, courageous, and constantly caught between duty and desire. Enter: the rival team rake 😏🔥 … the kind of man who makes your heart stutter even when you KNOW trusting him could cost your life. The tension between them? 👀💀

Let’s not forget the secret passageway smut 😳 YES, thank you Dakota for blessing us with THAT. But just when you're breathless from the steam and the spells and the betrayals… the game ends... and you're left in the abyss. 😩

AND A CLIFFHANGER I NEVER SAW COMING UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE (reflecting back the clues were all there ....... I was BLIND)

I am nail-biting for Book 2. This was a 10/10 mind-f*** and I need more. NOW. 🖤👑. My brain is fan fiction WRITING !!!

the nocturne abyss took me by surprise in the best way since I went into this book mostly blind. this book is fast paced and has lots of twists and turns along the way. it is clear while this book is mostly about Odessa navigating her way through the games, it is also setting the stage for the larger plot of this series as it subtly introduces world building and backstory to the dystopian state of the world. I personally enjoyed Odessa's character growth and transformation from a submissive "yes" girl to a fierce, take no bullshit woman. Odessa's story is a perfect reminder that we are in charge of our own lives and the choices we make decide our fate; that we should live every moment to the fullest and on our own terms. and while sometimes that choice is what is best for us, it may not be the best for others, but that should not let us hold back on our own happiness and wants. the romance between Odessa and Dex was a slow burn that hit so right once they gave into their desires. I am not typically a fan of cheating in books, but her fiance neglected her and treated her like she was worthless where as Dex treated Odessa as if she was the sun that orbits his world, his everything. I picked up pretty quickly in the plot the big reveal at the end of the book, but that didn't deter from how much I loved this story. I am extremely curious how the next book will play out and what will happen next!

Great, fast-paced dark fantasy romance with gods & goddesses, magical powers, enemies to lovers dynamic and a deadly competition.

I loved the idea of the masks! The magic (or magick) system was unique and I loved how the magic system worked with the masks.

I loved the chemistry between Odessa and Dex. Their banter was fun and I can’t wait to read what happens between them next, especially after that ending.

The writing style was captivating and made me feel like I was in the catacombs with the characters. Fast-paced and intense.

This book gave me Hunger Games vibes in a good way and I highly recommend checking it out. I can’t wait to read the next book!

“The odds were one in a million, and yet fate had called me by name.”
“I think people never know what they’re capable of until they’re faced with no other option.”
“I’ve been called many things, but being called a scoundrel might be my new favorite.”
“Too long I’d lived by everyone else’s rules and expectations. Now, I would live for myself. Even if that scared me. At least it would be my choice.”

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

"Odessa Devereaux, you are cordially required to attend The Nocturne Abyss. Beware that not all who play will make it out alive. You are to be escorted from your home tomorrow morning. Be ready to receive the god’s guards or face the consequences."

The Nocturne Abyss reminded me of The Hunger Games with magic. I absolutely love the concept of the Gods playing with mortals, I'm looking forward to learning more about this!!!

The storyline moved along at a good pace, you didn't feel like you were stuck in a scene overly long or that you weren't getting enough context.

I loved Odessa & how we see her learn that she is capable of more than she ever thought possible throughout the book.

Dex is the protector that never knew we needed. Once he realises he had a connection with Odessa not even her will stop him from protecting her.

I knew something was coming but did not predict that cliffhanger...I can't wait for the next book!!!

Some of the themes/tropes in this book are:

* Dark Fantasy
* Virgin MFC
* Betrayal
* Death
* Magic
* Rivals to Lovers

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I am OBSESSED!! Dakota, you outdid yourself with this one and I am invested until the end.
We enter a world were the Gods rule and there was an annual summons from Nocturne Abyss, the deadly game created by the God of Death. And once invited to play there was no refusal or there were harsh consequences to you and your family.
Odessa was the chosen and showed up knowing it could be her last time with her loved ones. When they entered the catacombs they are to choose a mask that gifts them powers from that particular God. Given time to own their powers and then start the games. Until Dex catches her attention in an enemies-to-lovers kind of way, she does all she can to fight her urges. But this handsome guy is one she can see herself with if they ever make it out alive. But that's the problem, there can only be one winner.
This one was too good to put down. The push and pull between Dex and Odessa is everything. And that cliffhanger had me screaming!! I can not wait until we get book two.

Think Hunger Games meets Magic and Gods!

Odessa is the FMC - is selected as one of the chosen for the Gods Games that happen each year in the catacombs (under France). They have a selection ceremony where they get to choose a mask - each mask represents a god and their power. Shadows, Flight, Necromancy, Fire, Manipulation etc.

Dex is our dashing blue eye dark hair MMC and he is immediately infatuated with Odessa. Which of course pissed her off because he’s hot and this a game until ☠️. The last contestant standing who makes it to the end gets to keep their power and whatever other power they’ve obtained and of course gets rich!

Spicy 🌶️ non-spoiler fun - at one point he’s with her and she says “stop I haven’t even showered” 🧼 thank goodness because I swear these warrior FMCs go get filthy spend time in swamp water and they want to have fun time 🫠. 😂 gave me a great laugh!

Dakota wrote this so the action continues on every page, while still building your characters, backstory and dripping Easter eggs.

It’s on KU - highly recommend you pick it up for a fresh story!

A Dark Fantasy You Won’t Forget

The Nocturne Abyss by Dakota Wilde is an amazing dark fantasy book. From the first page, it pulls you into a mysterious world full of magic, danger, and secrets. The writing is beautiful and easy to picture, with a dark and moody feeling that fits the story perfectly.

The main character is deep and interesting. You really feel for them as they face tough choices and explore a world filled with curses and hidden power. The story moves at just the right speed—slow when it needs to build the world, and fast when the action kicks in.

The twist near the end is shocking and really well done. It changes everything in the best way.

If you enjoy dark fantasy stories with strong characters, spooky settings, and surprising turns, this book is a must-read. Dakota Wilde has written something special that stays with you even after you finish it. Highly recommended!

Deadly games and the unknown

Odessa is just a normal person almost at graduation when she is summoned into the games. Very few people survive the games but if she manages it should could either get the money or magic needed to save her mothers life. On the day of the games her no good fiance didn't even show up to see her off.

It's said the games are just entertainment for the gods. Each has a mask in the game that represents a tiny sliver of their power. If you kill another player you can take their mask which gives you their power too.

Dax takes a shine to Odessa and the two end up getting close. They also save each other over and over. They plan to get to the end together.

This book definitely leaves you with a lot of questions about the games, the gods plans and what is actually going on. I can't wait to see what's next.

GASSSSPPPPP

I finished and ran to write my review of this book because THAT ENDING!!
I was hooked from the very beginning. The Nocturne Abyss, a battle to the death created by the god of death. The victor leaves with magick and riches of their wildest dreams, everyone else succumbs to their fate.
Odessa goes through it! She is a fall in line, meek, mild girl before she is chosen for the games but exits as someone else entirely. Watching her grow a backbone and start coming into her own person was its own sort of challenge. Dex is not what he seems in any way. The depth of emotion that comes from him (while still cocky) was completely unexpected. He is such a complex character and I am so curious about the secrets he is hiding.
I was not prepared for the end of this book!! That hit me right in the face and was not what I was expecting at all!!!
I can’t wait to get book two in my mitts!

“You’re playing a game of the gods. Never forget that you are but mortals in their realm.”

“Allowing you to know me would just give me hope. And hope in a place like this, is dangerous. You shouldn’t want to know me, Odessa. But if you want to know something, know that I’ll do what I can to protect you.”

I went into this one blind and as usual, I am thrilled that I did! The overall vibes of this book is like a dark fantasy/paranormal hunger games, with gods and magic.
While I would like to go on the record and say I totally called that one thing that will remain a secret, I still sat there in shock processing all of my feelings at the end. By the way, that ending- holy cliffhanger! I’m anxiously awaiting the next book because I’m into this whole storyline!

I enjoyed The Nocturne Abyss so much! Not surprised because I’ve read most of Dakota Wilde’s books and thoroughly enjoy each and every one of them. This is such a heart pumping thrill ride. The world building is perfect. I felt like it was watching a movie in my mind. The magic system with the masks is incredibly creative. The characters, even the side ones are detailed that you feel their fears, triumphs, failures and everything in between. The chemistry between Dex and Odessa is angsty and their banter so fun. True enemies to lovers, which is one of my favorite tropes, plays out magnificently. The burn is slow, but oh so worth it! Can’t express how this ending made me feel such a torrid of emotions and left gobsmacked . Mouth agape, WTF?! Need the next book!!! Seriously cannot express the need for more of this world is very real.

Such an amazing story! Even the story gave me Hunger Games vibes, it was much more than that. Settled in Paris, in a time of gods and games, the story enchants you from the first chapter. It has an interesting plot, action and spice (🌶🌶🌶3/5). Although I did suspect who Dex was at some point, I didn't expect the ending. The final scene was heartbreaking and I feel that there is more to the Dex story. I feel that these were his own trials too and his attendance in the games might be connected to some curse of sort. So many questions 🙊. Were the games a sort of reinstating him in his power? It felt so to my. Was his sacrifice needed for this? Did he need to be loved? So many questions. So impatient for book 2.
Love love💖💓💕

I really enjoyed this story! It was fast-paced, amusing, and difficult to put down. Even though I anticipated this turn of events, the cliffhanger  still made me scream. I need to know what, who, what, and why happens next. In conclusion, I'm eager to read more! Two of my favorite tropes—enemies to lovers and slow burn—were interwoven in this book. I was seeking the burn and couldn't wait for it to climax! There is an incredible chemistry between Odessa and Dex! Even though I foresaw the minor plot twist, I was nevertheless in complete shock for the final ten pages. I cried, was astonished, and then fell silent. I can't wait for the second book! Dakota, thank you for another fantastic book!

This was a quick read! I was enthralled from the get-go; it was addictive, entertaining, and so so fun!

Set in Paris, the Nocturne Abyss, hosted once a year by the gods, summonned sixteen players to play in its twisted and deadly game located in the expansive catacombs beneath.

I loved the mask concept; players had to choose a golden mask to wear during the competition that gifted them with one magical power — so cool!

I adored Odessa and Dex! They had so much chemistry and I loved their banter!

Overall, I really enjoyed the THE NOCTURNE ABYSS! It gave me Hunger Game vibes and was super atmospheric! I can’t to read what happens next! 5⭐️

Thanks so much, Dakota, for the eARC. All opinions are my own! 💕

In Paris, the Nocturne Abyss is held annually for the entertainment of the Gods. Once invited to participate, there is no turning back. In the catacombs beneath the city, players can expect death, betrayal, and meddling from deities.

This slow-burn had me captivated with its unique magic system through the use of masks. The angst, banter and chemistry between Dex and Odessa were perfectly balanced. I am not a fan of cliffhanger endings because I lack patience; I need to read the next book as soon as possible.

This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys something akin to the Hunger Games but with a mythical twist.

The blurb of this book instantly drew me into it. I don’t read too many dark fantasy romances, but I decided to give this one a chance. It was interesting but I don’t know if it was necessarily for me. The beginning was a little slow for me but overtime it started to pick up.

Odessa and Dex were good main characters, and I enjoyed seeing what happened when she accepted her fate of being summoned. So many things were unknown to her and the mask was something new to her, but she learned how to adjust.

It was interesting seeing all of the characters and how they interacted in the Catacombs. Overall, the book was different for me, and it ended on a cliffhanger. I am curious what will happen in the next book, but I will have to build up to that.

I have been eagerly anticipating this release, and it certainly did not disappoint! Odessa finds herself plunged into the nightmare known as Nocturn Abyss. She leaves her loved ones behind and confronts the harsh reality that she may not return to them. The games reveal just how much Odessa has suppressed her true self, showcasing her strength and the extent of her capabilities. As she leaves her fiancé behind, she finds herself drawn to Dex, a handsome, caring, and mysterious contestant. However, just as their relationship begins to blossom, we're hit with the twist of the century, leaving me at a loss for what to do next until the next book! This was an unforgettable read, and I cannot wait to see what the next installment has in store for us!

Loved this book! Read it in one sitting - truly.

We have Odessa - a girl who does as she's expected. Doesn't cause her parents problems, is a good student, a good sister, engaged to a man she's known most her life and is expected to marry. Life is 'properly' mapped out and planned.

That is, until she gets summoned to The Nocturne Abyss. A summons that cannot be denied without deadly consequences. Only one can win.

Upon approaching the entrance to the Abyss, she encounters Dex. An annoyingly, sexy, arrogant, man for whom she feels connected to. In this high stakes deadly game to reach the end, they find themselves in an unlikely alliance.

This DOES leave on a cliffhanger and I really hope Dakota doesn't leave us waiting tooooo long for it!

Ohhhh @dakotawildeauthor as much as I love you right now, I also hate you.

This book skyrocketed to my top books of the year. It is captivating. As soon as I started reading, I was engulfed into the world of the Nocturne Abyss. Odessa and Dex are incredible. Odessa’s character development is unmatched. And Dex is top tier book boyfriend material. The story, the writing, all of it is amazing. But that gods forsaken cliffhanger… waiting for book 2 might kill me. But the second it comes out, I know it will be devoured just like this one. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

I devoured this book so flippin fast! I want to start off by saying that I am not a reader that enjoys cheating, that is just not my thing and if its not your thing this book has that in it. Just a warning, and you would think that if I didnt like that then i wouldnt read this book but I did and I still loved it. I loved the plot of the book, I loved the building up of the characters and the growth that they managed to have in such a short amount of time. I loved everything about this book, the concept of gods and a till the deaths type games was wonderful and was so fun for me to read. I absolutely loved everything about this book.

Holy moly! This was amazing. It was dark and action packed with a little bit of spice!

Odessa is fighting to win the nocturne games which are set by the Gods in the catacombs of Paris. Each god gives a contestant a mask with a drop of their power on, to gain other powers you have to kill your opponents.

This book was like a magical, dark hunger games involving gods.

I really enjoyed it, I enjoyed Odessa’s character and seeing her grow and change.

I love Dex, he’s hot & mysterious

The end though! Cliff hanger! I need book 2 I did not see that ending coming!!

Thank you Dakota for sending me an ARC of this book.

Death has never been so inviting... Nocturne Abyss was so good! I ate this up, and I can't wait to find out what is next. That ending gave me whiplash in the best possible way. Dakota never fails to deliver an epic story that pulls you in and leaves you wanting more. I loved the relationship between Dex and Dessa and how he really helped to show her more to the life she thought was "good enough". While I kind of saw the plot twist from pretty early on the ending left me with my jaw on the floor. The next book needs to come asap!

I loved this! It's Odessa & Dex's story & it was awesome!! This is sort of like "Hunger Games", but with Gods & Goddesses' instead. When she's summoned to the games, there's a mix of emotions from her & her family. She meets him almost from the start. This story was awesome! I loved the magic aspects & loved the intensity between them. They stick together through the games & save each other more than once! The spice was fantastic & I loved the storyline!! I cannot wait until the next one!! Highly recommend this book & author!

Odessa finds herself as an unlucky contestant in the Nocturne, a game for the gods’ entertainment and a chance for her to earn magical powers and riches beyond imaginable. As she competes to keep her life and win the games, she cannot deny her attraction to another contestant. She had a whole life outside the walls of the maze, including an arranged marriage and duty to her family. But facing the real possibility of death has her second guessing what she wants for herself. Ends on a cliffhanger with book 2 not released yet!!
