Green Witch Bernice Henbit, is an expert in bodily fluids and poison. A skill much appreciated by New Orleans law enforcement. But most Supernaturals view her job as ‘creepy,’ leaving her perpetually dateless.
Seeking a work, life balance, she becomes host to Justice. A non-corporeal entity from the powers-that-be, hidden within an enchanted tarot deck. It gifts her the ability to find harmony and bring order to her world.
City Coroner, Shifter Stan Vitto needs her help on a tricky case. In return, he vows to act as her bodyguard, but his offer of safety likely doesn’t include her heart. Because she’s in grave danger of ruining their wonderful friendship, with admissions of her long, secret crush.
Bernice needs an Unjust advantage to secure her true-love.
This is book eleven in the G.R.I.T.S., Love & The Paranormal series — a clean romance that ticks every magical box.
In her mind, Jan is a modern-day Austen protagonist.
As a child, she created elaborate stories involving a pretend cattle ranch guarded by vegetarian dinosaurs and went on adventures with her stuffed teddy bear, creatively named Ted.
After getting out of college in four years (an astounding feat) she began a career in advertising and marketing. Extensive reading during work travel rekindled her imagination and her Rock, Paper, Scissors series was born. These YA Urban Fantasy books are full of action, snark and a hint of romance.
Now she writes full-time in her hometown of New Orleans. The city is its own character in her 22 book paranormal romance series. Those feature a variety of Supernatural Main Characters in search of love. An enchanted deck of tarot cards adds a unique twist to the interwoven storylines of her G.R.I.T.S. books.

Just like other reviewers have commented, UNJUST is my new favorite G.R.I.T.S. novel! As a "girl raised in the south" myself, I loved the NOLA setting as well as the trips into the swamps. Jan Mau Hill's descriptive imagery brought the locales to life. And I totally related with Bernie and especially appreciated the balance between her unapologetic confidence and vulnerability when it came to Stan. We can be proud to be all the things that make us unique: intelligent, capable, driven, caring, and courageous enough to lean on those who love us. Bernie is a wonderful example of that truth, and Stan proves there are men in the world strong enough to embrace just such a woman. On top of the setting and characters, I was enthralled with all the science Hill worked into the story arc — very well done!
Special thanks for the author sponsored giveaway that won me a kindle copy of this book. While I haven't read any of the other books in this series, you don't need to have read the previous stories to enjoy this one. There is a brief mention of the other receivers of these mystical cards (I'm assuming each receiver has their own book), it doesn't seem like the stories overlap, and I didn't feel I was missing anything. Also worth mentioning, I found an AI narrated version of this book free with my audible subscription, so I was able to read & listen at the same time. The story is about unusual murders popping up involving mated shifters, and Stan, our shifter MMC and paranormal coroner, asks Bernie, our fluids specialist FMC and long-standing occasional co-worker, for help on the case. She's had a crush for long time, but doesn't show it, and he seems like a nice guy who's clueless to her crush, but he seems to see her as a valuable colleague / work-friend, and is a bit protective of her when she's in trouble. At one point she's given a magic tarot card, which is basically a being that listens to her thoughts and occasionally offers advice to help her get her guy. Other than the deck being the premise that ties all the stories in the series together, I don't think the being added anything to the story. For the first part of the story, you only really see her as the scientist, and for the second part only the witch. While the first part was interesting, it wasn't really my jam. However, once we got into the witchy stuff, I found the magic system to be unique and I appreciated the detail in which the author described our green witch's powers. It was a little surprising to see how powerful she was supposed to be, considering magic seemed to have very little to do with her everyday life until the story actually required it. So this story is a "clean romance", so we don't see much except for pining from our FMC toward the friend she has a crush on, who occasionally shows her hints of romantic gesture that our FMC (and the reader) will brush off (like standing next to her or a short shoulder to shoulder brush). So, not quite a slow burn, more like a slow slight warming that ends with the start of a slow burn. The spice is very PG and appropriate for kids, even if the murder and death in the story is more PG-13. All in all, I liked the story and with the help of the audiobook, I was able to get through it in a few hours. While I'm primarily a high-spice paranormal-romance/romantasy reader, the magic system is what kept my interest here, while most clean romances wouldn't. I would definitely recommend for young adults who like magical stories in the modern world that have a paranormal twist, where there is a non-lusty, slow romance, but it doesn't take center stage.
Unjust: A thrilling, paranormal, slow burn romance!
Author Jan Mau Hill has written a book that will keep you up all night! A superb plot and characters who leap into your heart, take the two main characters into the swamps and plant life of Florida for a brush with death. Bernie (Bernice, a Green Witch) and Stan (a shifter) are both highly respected coroners who work as partners across the autopsy table. Although Bernie blushes and her heart does acrobatics when Stan is near, he seems oblivious to her affection. She becomes increasingly annoyed at his insistence on calling their relationship mere friendship.
Two paranormal husband and wife murders bring them closer together when Bernie exhausts her magic to keep a rogue Green Witch from killing the swamp ecosystem to gain more power. Bernie's deep love of plants and her loving heart place her in a deadly situation.
Stan fears the worst as he carries unconscious Bernie out of the swamp. Did they solve the murders? Does Bernie regain her health and magic? You have to read the book and see. You won't be disappointed! Highly recommended!
This latest book in the series ramps up the stakes. A double murder threatens to unleash chaos among the New Orleans supernatural community. Cue Bernice (Bernie), the green Witch and her magical entity from the powers-that-be, Libby.
She and longtime but oblivious crush Stan investigate, soon finding themselves facing a formidable foe. The finale is atmospheric and powerful, but I won't spoil the plot. Enough to say the book kept me turning the pages to discover if the would-be romance thrives, just like the natural world our green Witch heroine is pledged to protect.
Beautifully crafted story that demands you keep reading throughout. Stan and Bernice are a pair you want to have success throughout this tale of mystery, action, and possibly romance. Bernice’s talents as a forensic toxicologist and the overlap with her identity as a green witch, make her an intriguing character. I enjoyed the tension of the murder case and the hopeful romance throughout the story and could not put it down. Maybe the best yet in the G.R.I.T.S. series of books.
Happy to have been allowed a pre-publication copy to review. All thought in this review are mine.
I received this book as part of a free giveaway. Overall, I went in without expectations because I hadn’t heard of this author or series yet. Overall, the book was good. There were some grammatical and formatting choices that made it difficult to read occasionally, and I the Tarot portion of the plot seemed really underdeveloped. The plot was actually pretty good though, and I really enjoyed the characters!

I loved Bernice & Stan’s story! Quite the exciting adventure! I loved learning more about Bernice and her magic capabilities. I especially loved her fern babies! I enjoy the way each book in this series delves deeper into a character I already have met in previous books in the series. Great world building! These are my thoughts after enjoying an early copy of the book.
Unjust is an exciting read with plenty of tension. The mystery of the who and why follows a trail of clues that keeps you guessing. The romance is very slow burn, not as much romance as previous books in the series, but very sweet at the end. I loved Stan for his steadiness and the way he cared for Bernie, even though he didn't make many outward gestures, he always was there for her. Bernie's love for the land and care for the people made her a character to remember.
I received an early copy of Unjust from the author. All opinions are my own. I recommend this book.
I love this book! Bernice and Stan are a great couple. The 2 strange events leads Stand to protecting Bernice. The way the scenes are written it's like you are there. I know you will love this book. But, read them all. You will enjoy the series.
