a favorite read of 2025🩵

firstly, thank you to the publisher for an arc!

“life’s got to be lived, no matter how long or short. you got to take what comes. we just go along, like everybody else, one day at a time” 💔

all of the stars — i can remember reading the original novel back in the third or fourth grade during independent reading time, and it had such a huge impact on me back then. the emotions held up over a decade later.

the art in this graphic novel was absolutely stunning — i adored the water colors, and the color palette the artist chose, and it made reliving this story all the more special.

an absolute read for all ages, and be sure to have tissues nearby❤️‍🩹

The original Tuck Everlasting novel, written by the brilliant Natalie Babbitt, is one of my favorite books *ever*! Naturally, I was overjoyed to hear that it was being adapted into a graphic novel, but I was also a bit nervous as well. I was excited to see how the artist interpreted the story, but I hoped they would (for the most part) be faithful to the original. To my utter delight, K. Woodman-Maynard did exactly that! She took innovative artistic liberties, which I thought beautifully enhanced the original novel, while also staying true to Natalie Babbitt’s original writing and vision.

An aspect of the book that took me by surprise, in the most wonderful way, was the extra materials at the back. They included an interview between K. Woodman-Maynard and Natalie Babbitt’s daughter, Lucy, a behind the scenes glimpse into the artist’s creative process (which, as a writer and illustrator, I LOVED), as well as a photo of Natalie Babbitt’s family cabin (in NY) which was the inspiration behind the Tuck family’s home! These extra elements were “the cherry on top,” and it was a great cherry!

And, if we’re sticking with the cherry analogy, the graphic novel itself was a most delicious ice cream sundae!

We should all know by now that Tuck Everlasting is a true masterpiece and everyone should read it. Now that we are on the same page, this review will focus heavily on the artwork created by the lovely and talented K. Woodman-Maynard.

Doing a little research on Woodman-Maynard left me enamored, from studying illustration at Harvard to doing her first big illustration of The Great Gatsby, the hopes were high for her take on this beloved classic.

I love the fact that this could have been illustrated in a myriad of ways, but her medium is water colour and nothing could have fit this story better. The choice of colours for chapters and scenes brings so much depth and the colour theory was impeccably chosen. Not only were the characters vibrant but the scenes that called for more life or darkness were done with extreme care. I especially loved the chapter headings and the little bits of fun and foreshadowing of what was to come.

This was such a fun revival of something that already has so much joy and care baked throughout that I’d recommend a reread for anyone who loves it or to sit down with your kids and read through this version for the very first time.

Borrowed this one from Libby.

When I read this novel a few months ago, I could not connect, and I'm not sure why. Sometimes, a change of venue is what I need to give a story a second chance. So when I read that K. Woodman-Maynard had adapted it to a graphic novel, I knew I would like it. And I was right.

The story is morally complex, the characters are knowable, and the drawings are gorgeous. This was a definite win for me. I recommend it to fans of graphic novel adaptions, kid's classics, and theme-heavy storytelling.

E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Babbitt's beloved classic, it gets a beautiful graphic novel adaptation.

Winnie Foster chafes at all of the restrictions that her mother and grandmother place on her in the early 1900s. She longs to run away from Treegap, especially in the heat of the summer when everything feels oppressive. When she ventures into the woods, she meets Jesse Tuck, who claims to be 104 years old. Winnie, at ten, knows this isn't true. When Jesse's mother, Mae, shows up, she says that Winnie has to come with them because they have a secret that the world mustn't know. Winnie's a little scared, but also wants adventure in her life, and Mae is a comfortable sort of woman who doesn't make her afraid. Winnie learns the Tuck's secret; they drank from a spring in her family's woods 87 years ago, and haven't aged since. Miles, Jesse's brother, is sad about this because he had gotten married, and his wife and children got to be older than he was, and left him because they thought he had made a pact with the devil. Angus, the father, is somewhat bitter, because he is left out of the cycle of life and will never die, since the spring keeps the family members from experiencing injury. A man in a yellow suit has spoken to Winnie, and sees her with the Tucks. He has come to investigate stories his grandmother told him, and offers the Tucks information about where Winnie is in exchange for the land where the spring is located. They agree, and the man and a police officer head off to retrieve Winnie. The man offers the Tucks a deal; they will come and serve as an example of what the water can do, and he will sell the water to a select few for a very high price. When they decline, he threatens to make Winnie drink the water instead. Angered, Mae hits him in the head with the butt of a rifle just as the policeman arrives on his horse. She is jailed, and will most likely hang for her crime. Winnie returns home, but knows that she must save Mae. They manage to get her out, and the family must leave town. Jesse has given Winnie a bottle of the water, asking her to drink it when she is 16, and the two of them can spend their lives together, traveling the world. We find that she doesn't do this, pouring the water on a toad that is in danger instead. In an epilogue, the Tucks come back to Treegap and find her tombstone that tells of her long life as a friend, wife and mother.

Strengths: I rarely rave about the beauty of writing in middle grade books, but Babbitt's prose is so beautiful that I couldn't envision this book as a graphic novel. To my great delight, Woodman-Maynard includes key portions of the text in her gorgeous illustrations. These have an appropriate soft and dreamy quality, and it made me ridiculously happy to find out that she hand painted all of the book in watercolors. Really, this couldn't have been digitally colored. The story follows the original (which was a little more violent than I remembered!), and is a great way to introduce this timeless tale to a new generation of readers. Both of my daughters own a copy of this, and have reread it many times. If you are involved with children's literature and haven't read this one, pick up a copy somewhere right away! If you want to watch the movie, don't look at the 2002 theatrical release; hunt down the 1981 made for television version, where Winnie is ten instead of 16.
Weaknesses: I may be imagining this, but there seemed to be a missing scene at a fair, when one of the boys falls off... the Ferris wheel? Since the symbolism of wheels figures largely, and this seemed like a pivotal scene, I was suprised it was left out. I could be wrong, because I thought Winnie put the water on a turtle instead of a toad.
What I really think: I am not only buying a copy of this, but also a copy of the 50th Anniversary Edition, which still has Babbitt's original artwork on the cover. The graphic novel includes a picture of Babbitt's house (that is now under a reservoir!) that looks just like this. This is such a sad and touching story that I can't bear to think about what the Tuck's lives would be like if they were still around today. So much change, and so much harder to move about undetected!

*Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an E-Arc in exchange for an honest review!*

3.5 Stars!

I first watched Tuck Everlasting as a young child, and I still remember being completely captivated by its aesthetic and the magical concept behind the story. Years later, I discovered that it was actually based on a book—and as a lifelong bookworm, I had to pick it up immediately. The novel left a lasting impact on me, just as the movie had.

Recently, I had the opportunity to be an early reader of the graphic novel adaptation based on the book. Revisiting the story felt deeply nostalgic, and I loved experiencing it in a new format. The pacing was fast, and the artwork was beautifully drawn, bringing the world of Tuck Everlasting to life in a fresh, visual way.

However, my only issue was with the dialogue—or rather, the lack of it. Many speech bubbles were left blank, and I wasn’t sure if this was intentional. I even flipped through to the end of the graphic novel to see if there was any note or explanation, but found nothing that clarified this choice.

Despite that one hiccup, I genuinely enjoyed seeing Tuck Everlasting reimagined as a graphic novel. It’s always a special experience to revisit a beloved story in a new form.

Quite possibly the best graphic novel adaptation of a book, and also one of the most beautiful and powerful graphic novels I've ever read!

Tuck Everlasting is an all-time favorite novel for me, one that I've revisited so many times. Because I'm so familiar with the story, I wasn't 100% sure that I'd love a graphic novel adaptation, but this was absolute perfection. Tuck Everlasting is a book heavy with atmosphere and yet also weaves heavy subjects of life and death in a way that is age-appropriate and inviting for young readers. The visuals in this graphic novel capture all those elements with such tenderness and care, and I loved reading this book cover to cover in a single sitting.

I also love the included bonus material: an interview between the illustrator/adaptor and Babbitt's daughter (who is now a grandmother herself) and insights into the adaptation including a photo of Babbitt's home that was the inspiration for the Tuck's house. The cover gives homage to Babbitt's original illustration and it's easy to see how that photo was the source material for her illustration.

The illustrator did an amazing job brining one of my favorite stories of all time to a visual medium. The emotions of the characters really came through, and it was visually beautiful. I highly recommend this if you are a fan of the original novel or if you’ll be experiencing the story for the first time.

Thank you very much to NetGalley for the early access to read this.

"Everything's a wheel, turning and turning, never stopping ... And everywhere around us, things is moving and growing and changing ... Dying's a part of the wheel, right there next to being born. You can't pick out the pieces you like and leave the rest. Being part of the whole thing, that's the blessing."

This adaptation was BEAUTIFUL! What a great trip down memory lane for one of my favorites.

The illustrations were perfect... I'm still swooning over them. It was a lovely nod to the original book cover.
Watercolor over any other art medium always, always, always.

I'll definitely be adding this one to my personal and professional collection :)

P.S. K. Woodman-Maynard: please continue doing what you're doing... I'm lovinggggg it!

That sounds like a wonderful graphic novel adaptation! Here's a draft of a review you could use, incorporating your points:
A Stunning Adaptation: Tuck Everlasting Graphic Novel - 5 Stars!
I was fortunate to receive an ARC of the graphic novel adaptation of Tuck Everlasting through NetGalley, and I am absolutely blown away. This is more than just a retelling; it's a visual feast that breathes new life into a beloved classic.
The first thing that struck me was the sheer beauty of the graphics. Each panel is a work of art, and the way the text is integrated into the illustrations feels organic and intentional, enhancing the visual storytelling rather than feeling separate. The color palette is exceptionally vibrant, far richer and more captivating than what I've seen in many other graphic novels. It truly brings the magical and timeless quality of the story to the forefront.
Fans of the original novel will be delighted to see how faithfully the story has been adapted. The heart and soul of Tuck Everlasting remain intact, making this a wonderful way for both longtime readers and newcomers to experience this poignant tale.
Overall, this graphic novel adaptation is a triumph. The stunning visuals and faithful storytelling make it a must-read. Highly recommended!
Feel free to tweak this further to perfectly reflect your thoughts! Good luck with your review on NetGalley.

I have loved the story of Tuck Everlasting for as long as I can remember. In 4th grade, I watched the film. In middle school, I read the original story. In high school, I was part of my school's production of the musical. Now, as I am nearing the end of my Master's degree, months away from teaching in a middle school classroom, I had the wonderful opportunity to read Tuck Everlasting: The Graphic Novel.

This novel combines everything that I've loved from the previous formats of this story. The story's beautiful imagery, crafted by the late Natalie Babbitt, is made accessible to all readers through K. Woodman-Maynard's stunning illustrations. The story was a wonderful adaptation, and the choice of using watercolor perfectly matched, if not enhanced, the nostalgic vibes of the story. This graphic novel was an absolute joy, and I plan on purchasing it once it is published.

Thank you to Macmillan Children's Publishing Group-Farrar, Straus and Giroux and NetGalley for the ARC. This book is set to be published on September 2, 2025. All opinions are my own.

Everything about this is so, so good. K. Woodman-Maynard is a GODDESS with her incredible watercolor illustrations. There's a photo of her holding all of the watercolors at the back that is so cool. I cannot say enough good things about her style - her graphic adaptations are at the level of or even above the quality of Gareth Hinds' adaptations. The story itself is also fascinating. The story has aspects of adventure and suspense while containing deep philosophy and life advice. I haven't read the original text, but I don't feel that anything key to the story was missing here, and in fact I suspect that Woodman-Maynard clearly incorporated some symbolism that may have been unclear in the book, such as the circle of life being prominently displayed on several pages. Whether or not you've read and loved the original, you should absolutely read this.

I enjoyed the original as a young reader, and again as an adult, along with the movie, so getting a glimpse of yet another artistic medium as a graphic novel was a treat! The pen and watercolors add so much to the living water narrative of the story. Graphic novels do condense the original work, but adapters, who also love the original, take care to incorporate details into the art. Well done!

Absolutely stunning.

As one of my personal favorites, I was excited to see an illustrated version of Tuck Everlasting come to life and this one did not disappoint. Every page was a lovely caption of the original story. With page after page of color, whimsy, and thoughtful design, I am thrilled to have had this arc come across my desk.

Hopefully you will enjoy this classic just as much.

**ARC Review**
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.

When I first heard they were doing a graphic adaptation of Tuck Everlasting I was equal parts excited and nervous. I first read this book in 3rd grade and it quickly became a favorite of mine. It’s doesn’t shy away tackling the topics of death and mortality.

Once I saw the cover, I knew this adaptation would be in safe hands. K. Woodman-Maynard’s art perfectly captures the feeling reading this book gives you. It is warm and inviting and feels timeless. The color palette she settled on for the book also compliments the story as well.

The most impressive part to me is her ability to trim down the novel and make it consumable for this medium. Woodman-Maynard quickly drops us into the action but manages to lose none of the core details to this story. The heart of Natalie Babbett’s work can be felt on each page. This was an adaptation that was crafted with so much love and care and it shows.

K. Woodman-Maynard perfectly toed the line for this adaptation. It isn’t a page for page depiction but it’s not solely Woodman-Maynard’s interpretation either and to me, that’s why it works so well. It’s equal parts of both artists and allows for this beautiful story to be retold in a new medium and get introduced to a new generations of readers.

ARC Review | Tuck Everlasting: The Graphic Novel
Thanks to @NetGalley for the chance to read this advanced copy in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt!

I enjoyed revisiting this timeless story in graphic novel form. The illustrations were adequate and helped bring the story to life, though I found myself wanting a bit more depth in places. Some of the original details felt a little lost in translation—but the heart of the story is still there.

Perfect for school-aged readers who are new to Tuck Everlasting, but as an adult, I still prefer the classic version. A lovely tribute to a beloved tale!

“The way I see it, people got to do something useful if they’re going to take up space in the world.”

Winnie Foster wants to run away, even if it’s just to the woods behind her house when she hears music her mom said is made by elves. When she gets to the woods, she meets Jesse Tuck, who won’t let her drink from the spring she sees him drink from. The Tuck family takes Winnie with them as they explain the spring has magical properties that makes anyone who drinks it immortal. Spending time with the Tucks endears Winnie towards them and when she’s forced to return and Ma Tuck is put in danger, Winnie believes this family is worth fighting for.

It’s been 50 years since this MG masterpiece released. In honor of this, the Babbit family had @woodmanmaynard adapt and illustrate Natalie’s magical realism book into a graphic novel that asks the question: what if you could live forever? This was filled with nostalgia for me, as I read it in 5th grade. The artwork was perfect for the #novel and I can’t wait for a whole new generation to fall in love with this story when it releases September 25!

5/5 stars -- it would appear that i need to reread tuck everlasting because boy did ya girl cry. the graphic novel adaptation did such a beautiful job of conveying natalie babbitt's gorgeous prose and the themes and messaging of the story. i'm obsessed with the silhouette pages (iykyk) and i love how the color palettes were so integral to the setting/time of each panel. it's hard to trim down a story to suit such a visual medium but, in my opinion, it was done perfectly. finally, i loved the end interview between the artist and lucy babbitt (natalie's daughter). not only did it reinforce the beautiful themes of tuck, but it also pointed out a small detail in the illustrations that i had missed which (surprise!) made me cry even more.

I never read Tuck Everlasting growing up, and I never actually saw the movie so when I requested this book. Went in with a general knowledge of “this is a kids classic, something about death, I think it’s sad”. And that was it, that was what I went in with.”

Like so many classics for younger audiences, I’m kinda wowed as an adult going back and reading them and seeing the deeper themes at play. This was so well done as a graphic novel, although the art style was not my particular taste, I really think the adaptation worked and the heavy themes of life, death, and the circle there of was lovely. I’m really enjoying these adaptations of classics I missed out on growing up. I wish this was longer, but I would recommend overall.

I really loved this book when I was a child and it stayed with me throughout the years. I was so grateful that I got an early copy of the graphic novel. The illustration in the book was amazing and they really enhanced the book. One thing that bugged me was the age gap which I didn’t remember from when I read it when I was younger for some reason I thought the FMC was older.

I don’t recall reading this book as a child so I don’t know how much of the story was taken out (there is an interview at the ended of the novel between the adapting author and the original authors daughter that touches a bit on this) to fit into graphic novel form but this story felt rushed. Overall the story and art style were just ok for me.
